22nd Sunday in Ordinary Time (Cycle B) A Sunday Reflection

Tradition holds a special place in our hearts; it links us to the past and helps to prolong it in time. And yet, tradition can also be turned into an idol, stifling creativity and progress. This is particularly sad when the tradition upheld is something made up by man, as Jesus says in today’s gospel, or when it is invoked in order to sidestep some responsibility towards others.

Appearances can be deceiving, and so the Lord warns us that “the things that come out from within are what defile” (Mk 7:15). It is an invitation to avoid judging others, and to look into our own hearts so that we may root out all that is evil and cultivate what is good. May the Lord give us his grace so that we may hold on to what is good and grow in his love. God bless you!

22oDomingo del Tiempo Ordinario (Ciclo B) Reflexión Dominical

La tradición ocupa un lugar especial en nuestros corazones, ya que nos conecta al pasado y nos ayuda a proyectarlo en el tiempo. Con todo, la tradición también puede convertirse en un ídolo, ahogando la creatividad y el progreso. Y si se trata de una tradición creada por los hombres, o cuando se invoca para evadir nuestro compromiso con el prójimo, como dice Jesús en el evangelio de hoy, es particularmente triste.

Las apariencias engañan. Por eso el Señor nos advierte que “lo que sale de dentro es lo que hace impuro al hombre” (Mc 7, 15). Es una invitación a no juzgar a otros y a mirar dentro del propio corazón para arrancar todo el mal y cultivar el bien. Que el Señor nos dé su gracia para que nos aferremos a lo bueno y crezcamos en su amor. Que Dios los bendiga.

At the beginning of the XVII century a beautiful image of the Mother of Christ appeared floating on the waters of the Bay of Nipe, Cuba, after a storm. The image was on a small board on which was written: I AM THE VIRGIN OF CHARITY. Three farmers who had been looking for salt, picked it up and took it to a small town called Barajagua. Some years later the image was taken to the parish church of El Cobre, from where the image would disappear. A local girl called Apolonia kept saying that she had seen it on the slope of the hill of El Cobre. After praying for guidance, the town people saw like a glare on the place indicated by Apolonia, where they built a small hermitage and placed the image there. It was at this site that the National Shrine was eventually built and many people go there constantly to pray and ask Her protection in times of danger and need. The venerated image of the Virgin came to this city of Miami in 1961, accompanying her children amid the pain of exile. Within a few years, when many still did not even own their own homes, as Bishop Román used to recall, they erected a chapel which is a place of welcome for all, a center of encounter with God through His Mother. Once again this year, to show the same love and devotion to Our Lady of Charity, secondary patroness of the Archdiocese, we will gather to celebrate the Eucharist on her feast day, September 8 and to pray as a community for our brothers and sisters from Cuba, for freedom, for the release of political prisoners and for peace in the world. Come and join us!

A principios del siglo XVII una hermosa imagen de la Madre de Cristo apareció flotando en las aguas de la Bahía de Nipe, Cuba, después de una tormenta. La imagen estaba sobre una pequeña tabla y tenía un letrero que decía: YO SOY LA VIRGEN DE LA CARIDAD. Tres campesinos que habían ido a buscar sal la recogieron y llevaron a un pequeño pueblo llamado Barajagua. Unos años más tarde fue llevada a la parroquia de El Cobre; pero la imagen siempre desaparecía de allí y tenía que ser devuelta a su lugar. Una joven llamada Apolonia insistía en que había visto la imagen en el cerro de El Cobre. Después de un tiempo de oración, los habitantes del pueblo vieron un resplandor en el cerro y construyeron una pequeña ermita a donde trasladaron la imagen. Allí se construyó luego el Santuario Nacional de El Cobre, donde muchos peregrinos la visitan constantemente para orar ante ella y pedir su protección en tiempos de peligro y necesidad. La venerada imagen de la Virgen llegó a esta ciudad de Miami en 1961, acompañando a sus hijos en medio del dolor del exilio. En pocos años, y cuando muchos aún no tenían casa propia -como siempre recordara Mons. Román- fueron capaces de erigirle una Ermita que es lugar de acogida para todos, centro de encuentro con Dios a través de su Madre. Este año mostraremos una vez más ese mismo amor y devoción a Nuestra Señora de la Caridad, patrona secundaria de esta Arquidiócesis, reuniéndonos para celebrar la Eucaristía en el día de su fiesta, 8 de septiembre y rezando como comunidad por nuestros hermanos de Cuba, por la libertad, por los presos políticos y por la paz del mundo.¡Los esperamos!

The Blesseds / Los Beatos

BLESSED DIEGO LUIS DE SAN VITORES (1627-1672) — Diego Luis de San Vitores was born to a noble family in Burgos, Spain. He entered the Society of Jesus and was ordained in 1651. He was granted permission to serve in the Philippines, fulfilling his long-time dream of being a missionary, he stopped in Guam along the way, and later persuaded King Philip IV of Spain to establish a mission there. He founded the first Catholic church in Guam in 1669.

After years of serving with limited success, at the death of a friendly local chief who had supported the missionaries, members of the Chamorro (an

indigenous tribe) rose against the missionaries who refused the protection of Spanish soldiers. Blessed Diego Luis was martyred on April 2, 1672. Killed with him was his assistant, a Filipino lay catechist, Saint Pedro Calungsod. Blessed Diego Luis was beatified in 1985. The feast day of both, Blessed Diego and St. Pedro Calungsod is October 6.

BEATO DIEGO LUIS DE SAN VITORES (1627-1672) — Nacido de una familia noble en Burgos, España, Diego Luis de San Vitores ingresó a la Compañía de Jesús y fue ordenado sacerdote en 1651. Tras conseguir permiso para servir como misionero en Filipinas, vio cumplido su sueño. Camino allá, hizo una parada en Guam, y más tarde logró persuadir al rey Felipe IV de España para establecer allí una misión. El Beato Diego Luis fundó la primera iglesia católica en Guam en 1669.

Su éxito en la isla fue limitado. A la muerte de un cacique local que había dado apoyo a los misioneros, la tribu de los Chamorros se levantó contra ellos. Los misioneros se negaron a recibir protección de las tropas españolas. El Beato Diego Luis alcanzó el martirio el 2 de abril de 1672, junto con su asistente san Pedro Calungsod, catequista laico filipino. El Beato Diego Luis fue beatificado en 1985. La fiesta de ambos mártires se conmemora el 6 de octubre.

The Pope Speaks / Habla el Papa Apostolic Exhortation Gaudete et Exsultate On the Call to Holiness in Today’s World

There can be any number of theories about what constitutes holiness, with various explanations and distinctions. Such

reflection may be useful, but nothing is more enlightening than turning to Jesus’ words and seeing his way of teaching the truth.

Jesus explained with great simplicity what it means to be holy when he gave us the Beatitudes (cf. Mt 5:3-12; Lk 6:20-23). The Beatitudes are like a Christian’s identity card. So if anyone asks: “What must one do to be a good Christian?”, the answer is clear.

We have to do, each in our own way, what Jesus told us in the Sermon on the Mount. In the Beatitudes, we find a portrait of the

Master, which we are called to reflect in our daily lives.

The word “happy” or “blessed” thus becomes a synonym for “holy”. It expresses the fact that those faithful to God and his word, by their self-giving, gain true

happiness. (Nos. 63, 64)

Exhortación Apostólica Gaudete et Exsultate Sobre el llamado a la santidad en el mundo actual

Puede haber muchas teorías sobre lo que es la santidad, abundantes explicaciones y distinciones. Esa reflexión podría ser útil, pero nada es más iluminador que volver a las palabras de Jesús y recoger su modo de transmitir la verdad. Jesús explicó con toda sencillez qué es ser santos, y lo hizo cuando nos dejó las bienaventuranzas (cf. Mt 5,3-12; Lc 6,20-23). Son como el carnet de identidad del cristiano. Así, si alguno de nosotros se plantea la pregunta: «¿Cómo se hace para llegar a ser un buen cristiano?», la respuesta es sencilla: es necesario hacer, cada uno a su modo, lo que dice Jesús en el sermón de las bienaventuranzas. En ellas se dibuja el rostro del Maestro, que estamos llamados a transparentar en lo cotidiano de nuestras vidas.

La palabra «feliz» o «bienaventurado», pasa a ser sinónimo de «santo», porque expresa que la persona que es fiel a Dios y vive su Palabra alcanza, en la entrega de sí, la verdadera dicha con la fuerza de la gracia. (Nos. 63, 64)

Father Luis welcomed the teachers and students and blessed the

entire school community. Everyone came together to pray for a

wonderful new school year. It was a beautiful celebration of Mass,

enhanced by the student altar servers, lectors and choir.
