22nd Sunday in Ordinary Time (Cycle C) A Sunday Reflection

The teaching in today’s Gospel is directed to making us grow in humility. Many think too highly of themselves and always seek the place of honor, looking to stand next to the most notable person in the gathering so that all may recognize their importance. Those risk being publicly brought down.

Instead, the Lord invites us to look at ourselves in a different way. Are we really that important? What do we have that we have not received? Our real dignity comes from being a child of God, and that is not of our own doing.

Sirach counsels us in the first reading to “conduct our affairs with humility and you will be loved more than a giver of gifts” (3:17). No one likes a proud person. Let us remember always that “every one who exalts himself will be humbled, but the one who humbles himself will be exalted” (Lk 14:11). God bless you.

Reflexión Dominical La enseñanza del Evangelio de hoy busca hacernos crecer en

humildad. Muchos creen demasiado en su propia importancia, buscando el lugar de honor, colocándose junto a la persona más notable de la reunión para que todos vean que son “alguien”. Los que así actúan corren el riesgo de que los hagan quedar mal en público.

En vez de esto, el Señor nos invita a vernos de otro modo. ¿Somos en verdad así de importantes? ¿Qué tenemos que no hayamos recibido? Nuestra verdadera dignidad proviene de ser hijos de Dios, y eso no es por mérito propio.

En la lectura del libro del Eclesiástico, Ben Sirá nos aconseja que procedamos con humildad en nuestros asuntos, “y te amarán más que al hombre dadivoso” (3:17). El soberbio no es una persona agradable. Recordemos siempre que “el que se engrandece a sí mismo, será humillado; y el que se humilla, será engrandecido” (Lc 14, 11). Que Dios los bendiga.

DID THE APOSTLES PRAY TO MARY, THE SAINTS OR THE ANGELS?

The early Christians asked for the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary, of the saints and the angels. To intercede is to ask God for a grace in behalf of someone (cf. Gn 18:16-33) We can also ask another person to pray for us (cf. Hb 13:18-19; 1 Tess 5:25; Col 4:3).

Mary interceded for the young couple at the wedding at Cana (Jn 2:1-11), and she remained in prayer with the apostles and the first disciples (Acts 1:1-14). She continues to accompany Jesus’ disciples and to intercede for them because she is our Mother also (Rev 12:1-17).

As a matter of fact, our separated brethren also intercede for each other; although they don’t call it that, they do pray for each other.

DID THE APOSTLES VENERATE ANY SORT OF IMAGES?

The Apostles knew well the Scriptures, and knew how to differentiate between an image and an idol. They knew that God allows the use of images (Ex 25:18; Num 21:8; 1 Kings 6:23ff; 1 Kings 7:25ff) and forbids pagan idols (Ex 20:3-5; Ps 115; Ps 135).

¿LOS APÓSTOLES REZABAN A MARÍA, A LOS SANTOS O A LOS ÁNGELES?

Los primeros cristianos pedían la intercesión de la Virgen María, de los ángeles y los santos. Interceder es pedir a Dios en favor de alguien (Cfr. Gn 18, 16-33). Podemos pedirle a alguien que ore y que ruegue por nosotros (Cfr. Hb 13, 18-19; 1Tes 5, 25; Col 4, 3).

La Virgen María intercedió por los jóvenes esposos en Caná de Galilea (Jn 2, 1-11) y ella estuvo en oración con los apóstoles y los primeros discípulos (Hch 1, 1-14). Ella sigue acompañando a los discípulos de Jesús e intercede por ellos. Es también nuestra Madre (Ap, 12, 1-17).

De hecho, aunque no le llaman así, los hermanos separados también interceden unos por otros; es decir, oran y ruegan unos por otros.

¿LOS APÓSTOLES VENERABAN ALGÚN TIPO DE IMÁGENES?

Los apóstoles conocían las Escrituras y sabían distinguir entre una imagen y un ídolo. Estaban conscientes de que Dios permite las imágenes (Ex 25, 18; Nm 21, 8; 1Re 6, 23ss; 1Re 7, 25ss) y prohíbe los ídolos de los paganos (Ex 20, 3-5; Sal 115; Sal 135).

The Blesseds /Los Beatos BLESSED BUENAVENTURA GARCÍA DE PAREDES (1866-

1936) — Born in Castañedo de Valdés, Spain, he took care of his father’s sheep as a young boy.

Buenaventura entered the Dominican Order, professing vows in 1884. Following his ordination, he served as a professor at the University of Santo Tomás in the Philippines. In 1910, he was elected to serve as the provincial of the Dominicans in the

Philippines.

In 1926, he was elected Master General of the Order of Preachers, and is remembered for helping to establish the Pontifical University the Angelicum. He resigned the office in 1929, because of growing

health concerns.

In 1936, as the anti-Catholic violence of the Spanish Civil War erupted, Buenaventura was executed by a firing squad on August 12, one of the thousands of priests and religious martyred during the uprising. Blessed Buenaventura García de Paredes was beatified in 2007.

BEATO BUENAVENTURA GARCÍA DE PAREDES (1866-1936) — Nació en Castañedo de Valdés, España, y de niño cuidaba las ovejas de su padre.

Buenaventura profesó en la Orden de Predicadores (Dominicos) en 1884. Ordenado sacerdote, fue destinado a Filipinas, donde enseñó en la Universidad de Santo Tomás. En 1910 fue elegido provincial de los Dominicos en Filipinas.

Elegido Maestro General de la Orden en 1926, se le recuerda por su labor para establecer la Pontificia Universidad Angelicum. Renunció al cargo en 1929 por problemas de salud.

Al estallar la violencia anticatólica de la guerra civil española en 1936, Buenaventura fue fusilado el 12 de Agosto de ese año, uno de los miles de sacerdotes y religiosos que sufrieron el martirio durante la guerra. Buenaventura García de Paredes fue beatificado en 2007.

Catechesis on the Our Father, March 27, 2019

Jesus teaches us to ask the Father for our daily bread. And he teaches us to do so united with many men and

women for whom this prayer is a plea — often stifled within — which accompanies the anxiety of each day. How

many mothers and how many fathers, even today, go to sleep with the torment of not having enough bread for

their own children tomorrow! Let us imagine this prayer recited not in the security of a comfortable apartment, but

in the precariousness of a room in which one adapts, where life’s necessities are lacking. Jesus’ words take on

new meaning. Christian prayer begins at this level.

Jesús nos enseña a pedirle al Padre el pan de cada día. CELEBRATING THE BEGINNING OF A NEW SCHOOL YEAR

Father Luis welcomed the teachers and students and blessed the entire school community. Everyone came together to pray for a wonderful new school year. It was a beautiful celebration of Mass, enhanced by the student altar servers, lectors and choir.
