Insects & PesticidesEntering into September for the aver-age Floridian means the continued heat of the long summer season, inclusive of the endless conflict with mosquitos and other insects while outdoors. But for farmworkers who toil long hours in the heat providing food for our tables, sun exposure is not the only issue. Many also suffer significant health related is-sues from pesticides and other irritants to the skin.

ShirtlessCreating further impact is the lack of access to appropriate clothing for this laborious work. For most, this means carrying out duties with shirts that are inefficient, and need to discard shirts every few days due to an accumulation of pesticides.

Long-sleeved shirts help to protect their skin from the rays of the sun, insect bites and the harmful chemicals with which they frequently come into contact.

To aid with this need, OLA’s Charity of the Month for September is “Sleeves of Hope”, a drive to collect funds for long-sleeved shirts to be distributed by St Michaels’s Parish in Wauchula, FL. This will assist the farmworkers so that they can continue their vocation in the safest environment possible.

The farmworkers are also in need of dishes, pots, pans, towels, & bedding.

Emily Mingote Hey, brothers and sisters! Some of you may know me, some of you may not. My name is Emily Mingote, I’ve been a parishioner at Our Lady of the Angels since 2002, I now attend the Florida State University, and I’m entering my junior year of college. Forming my Catholic roots at Our Lady of the Angels, I continue my spiritual growth at FSU through the Catholic Student Union, a registered-student organization and campus ministry where the Brotherhood of Hope serves.

School of the New Evangelization A few weeks ago, I had the opportunity to go to the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minnesota for a week-long conference: School of the New Evangelization! Over 350 Catholic college students attended SNE and immersed into the evangelistic heart of our faith.

Throughout SNE, we could choose which breakout sessions to attend; there were three tracks: Holiness, Communion, and Mission. It was literally like school with classes (but enriching and life-changing). I went to several of the Holiness talks, 2 on Communion, and 2 on Mission. I took pages and pages of notes.

Deep Impact SNE really confirmed the importance of sharing the Gospel with others. The theme was “Deep Impact” with the recurring topic of water throughout the week. We are all longing for something more, something great. Only Christ can quench our thirst; He is the living water.

Because we have received so much (grace, mercy, love, forgiveness) from Jesus, it is our mission to share that with those around us – this is described as “spiritual overflow”.

St. Pope John Paul the Second (JP2) said it is the duty of all Christians to be missionaries. JP2 talked about the urgency of missionary activity. If we truly believe this message to be our salvation, we must surely want to tell everyone about it!

Beginning with prayer

At SNE, we went to daily mass, prayed Morning Prayer (Liturgy of the Hours) in our dorms, and experienced Charismatic Praise and Worship, Eucharistic Adoration, and small group sharing. I had a deeper encounter with Jesus, met so many awesome college students from around the country, explored a little bit of the summer beauty up North, and even got to hang-out with some Franciscan T.O.R sisters!

Overall, it was very perspective-changing and a beautiful, blessed week!

National Leukemia & Lymphoma Awareness Month by Dawn Anderson

September 2015 is National Leukemia and Lymphoma Awareness Month. The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society is the world’s largest voluntary health agency dedicated to blood cancer. Their mission is to cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease and myeloma.

Cancer of the Bone marrowLeukemia, lymphoma, myeloma and myelodysplastic syndromes are types of cancer that can affect the bone marrow, the blood cells, the lymph nodes and other parts of the lymphatic system.

Did you know? One person in the United States is diagnosed with a blood cancer approximately every four minutes.

An estimated combined total of 140,310 people in the United States were diagnosed with leukemia, lymphoma or myeloma* in 2011.

New cases of leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma will account for 9 percent of the 1,596,670 new cancer cases diagnosed in the United States this year.

Leukemia causes an accumulation of cancer cells in the bone marrow and blood. The presence of large numbers of abnormal cells in the bone marrow can inhibit the marrow from producing normal healthy blood cells.

Types of LeukemiaThere are different types of Leukemia. They are: Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML), Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia (CLL), Chronic Myeloid Leukemia (CML) and Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL).

LymphomaLymphoma is a type of cancer involving cells of the immune system, called lymphocytes. Lymphoma primarily affects the lymphatic system (part of the immune system) and there are about 35 sub-types of this form of cancer.

Myeloma is a cancer of plasma cells, a type of white blood cell normally responsible for producing antibodies. Plasma cells normally make proteins called antibodies to help you fight infections.

Warning Signs:Signs are subtle and it may take a while before you know something is wrong. Symptoms to watch for are as follows: painless lumps in your neck, armpits or groin, weight loss, fever, night sweats, itchiness all over your body, loss of appetite, feeling of weakness and a feeling of breathlessness with swelling of the hands/feet. If you have some of these symptoms, please seek an evaluation from your physician.

Each year the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society sponsors the Light the Night Walk to raise money for research and treatment for Leukemia, Lymphoma and Myeloma. This is a charity near and dear to my heart because my mother passed away from complications of Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia (CLL).

For more information on how you can participate in the Light the Night Walk in our area, visit: lightthenight.org/

A non-commital generationMy generation is increasingly known for its lack of commitment.

After all, we were the first ones to head to college with only the vague notion of what we would be studying for the hundreds of thousands of dollars our parents or generous scholarship benefactors were paying on our behalf. None of us really planned to become doctors or lawyers, we just told our parents that until we really made up our minds.

In all seriousness, though, the average age of Gen Y adults committing to marriage is closer to 30 where previous generations married closer to 20, or perhaps 25 if attending college. Many chose to co-habit with their significant other prior to marriage, to the detriment of an average of 60% of first marriages ending in divorce (Marriage and Divorce rate [2000–2011] — Centers for Disease Control and Prevention).

We are even non-committal with our religion, preferring to be “spiritual, but not religious”.

All of this non-commitment, though, prevents us from experiencing the fullness of life that comes with embracing the struggles and joys of committed relationships and responsibilities.

Commit to ChristRather than allowing us to dabble in a bit of everything or picking and choosing the certain parts of various religions we find appealing, Christ confronts us in today’s Gospel to make a decision.

Much of our Western culture today is very self-oriented and driven—affecting all generations, not just my own. We fail to commit to things all the time, thinking of ourselves more than something greater than ourselves. We’re non-committal about social plans, hoping a better offer comes along. We throw away relationships over silly arguments or write people off just because they don’t see things our way.

Most concerning of all, however, is that many of us have turned Jesus away, because a relationship with Him seems to be too deep of a demand for us to take on. Let us hear fresh again, though, the words of Pope Benedict:

Do Not Be Afraid of Christ!“Are we not perhaps all afraid in some way? If we let Christ enter fully into our lives, if we open ourselves totally to him, are we not afraid that He might take something away from us? Are we not perhaps afraid to give up something significant, something unique, something that makes life so beautiful? Do we not then risk ending up diminished and deprived of our freedom? . . . No! If we let Christ into our lives, we lose nothing, nothing, absolutely nothing of what makes life free, beautiful and great. No! Only in this friendship are the doors of life opened wide. Only in this friendship

“No! If we let Christ into our lives, we lose no th ing , no th ing , absolutely nothing of what makes life free, beautiful and great....”

is the great potential of human existence truly revealed. Only in this friendship do we experience beauty and liberation. And so, today, with great strength and great conviction, on the basis of long personal experience of life, I say to you, dear young people: Do not be afraid of Christ! He takes nothing away, and he gives you everything. When we give ourselves to him, we receive a hundredfold in return. Yes, open, open wide the doors to Christ – and you will find true life. Amen.”

The 1st Step in the New EvangelizationThe first step in the New Evangelization does not entail going out into the far reaches of the world. Rather, it’s a look inward, to discern our own hearts. It needs a new, fresh commitment by those supposedly living the faith, to take a step further and establish practices of daily discipleship (prayer, scripture, devotions, etc.). We must embrace our faith and commit to it, so that in doing so, our lives reflect a fundamental change.

If we are to reach out to those in need of re-evangelization, we must have a faith that is relevant. Today’s fallen-away Catholic or agnostic isn’t concerned with doctrine or teaching, as much as, they are with seeing the joy of another person that comes from their relationship with Christ. Let us examine our own lives, that we might draw closer to him, and in doing so, become the kind of people that will naturally draw others to him as well.

COMMIT TO CHRIST BY SPENCE MCSORLEY
