THE COLLECT.

RANT, we beseech thee, Almighty God: that likeas we do believe thy only-begotten Son our Lord

Jesus Christ to have ascended into the heavens; so wemay also in heart and mind thither ascend, and withhim continually dwell; who liveth and reigneth withthee, in the unity of the Holy Ghost, ever one God,

world without end. Amen.

THE LESSON. Acts 1. 1.

HE former treatise have I made, O Theophilus, ofall that Jesus began both to do and teach, until the

day in which he was taken up, after that he throughthe Holy Spirit had given commandments unto theApostles whom he had chosen: to whom also heshowed himself alive after his passion by many proofs, appearing unto them during forty days, and speakingof the things pertaining to the kingdom of God: and, being assembled together with them, commandedthem that they should not depart from Jerusalem, butwait for the promise of the Father, which, saith he, yehave heard of me. For John truly baptized with water, but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit not manydays hence.

When they therefore were come together, theyasked of him, saying, Lord, wilt thou at this time

restore again the kingdom to Israel? And he said untothem, It is not for you to know the times or theseasons, which the Father hath put in his own power. But ye shall receive power after that the Holy Spirit iscome upon you; and ye shall be witnesses unto me,both in Jerusalem, and in all Judæa, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth. And when

he had spoken these things, while they beheld, he wastaken up, and a cloud received him out of their sight. And while they looked stedfastly toward heaven, as hewent up, behold, two men stood by them in whiteapparel; which also said, Ye men of Galilee, why standye gazing up into heaven? This same Jesus, which istaken up from you into heaven, shall so come, in likemanner as ye have seen him go into heaven.

Ephesus: and finding certain disciples, he said unto

them, Did ye receive the Holy Ghost when yebelieved? And they said unto him, We have not somuch as heard whether there be any Holy Ghost. Andhe said unto them, Unto what then were ye baptized? And they said, Unto John’s baptism. THE LESSON. Acts 2. 1.

HEN the day of Pentecost was fully come, theDisciples were all with one accord in one place.

And suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of arushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house wherethey were sitting. And there appeared unto themcloven tongues, like as of fire, and it rested upon eachof them: and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spiritgave them utterance.

And there were dwelling at Jerusalem Jews, devoutmen, out of every nation under heaven. Now whenthis sound was heard, the multitude came together, and were bewildered, because that every man heardthem speak in his own language. And they were allamazed, and marvelled, saying one to another, Behold, are not all these which speak Galilaeans? And howhear we every man in our own tongue wherein wewere born? Parthians, and Medes, and Elamites, and

the dwellers in Mesopotamia, and in Judæa, andCappadocia, in Pontus, and Asia, Phrygia, andPamphylia, in Egypt, and in the parts of Libya aboutCyrene, and strangers from Rome, both Jews andproselytes, Cretes and Arabians, we do hear themspeak in our tongues the wonderful works of God.

THE GOSPEL. St John 14. 15.

ESUS said unto his disciples, If ye love me, keep mycommandments. And I will pray the Father, and he

shall give you another Comforter, that he may abidewith you for ever; even the Spirit of truth, whom theworld cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neitherknoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth withyou, and shall be in you.

I will not leave you comfortless; I will come to you.Yet a little while, and the world seeth me no more; butye see me: because I live, ye shall live also. At that dayye shall know that I am in my Father, and ye in me,

and I in you. He that hath my commandments, andkeepeth them, he it is that loveth me; and he thatloveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will lovehim, and will manifest myself to him. Judas saith untohim, (not Iscariot,) Lord, how is it that thou wiltmanifest thyself unto us, and not unto the world?Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me,he will keep my words, and my Father will love him,and we will come unto him, and make our abode withhim. He that loveth me not keepeth not my sayings:

and the word which ye hear is not mine, but theFather's which sent me.

These things have I spoken unto you, being yetpresent with you. But the Comforter, which is theHoly Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, heshall teach you all things, and bring all things to yourremembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you. Peace

healing all that were oppressed by the devil: for Godwas with him. And we are witnesses of all thingswhich he did, both in the land of the Jews, and inJerusalem; Whom they slew, and hanged on a tree: himGod raised up the third day, and showed him openly;not to all the people, but unto witnesses chosen beforeof God, even to us, who did eat and drink with him

While Peter yet spake these words, the Holy Spiritfell on all them which heard the word. And they ofthe circumcision which believed were astonished, asmany as came with Peter, because that on the Gentilesalso was poured out the gift of the Holy Spirit. Forthey heard them speak with tongues, and magnifyGod. Then answered Peter, Can any man forbid water, that these should not be baptized, which have received

the Holy Spirit as well as we? And he commandedthem to be baptized in the name of the Lord. Thenprayed they him to tarry certain days.

THE EPISTLE. Romans 12. 3.

RETHREN: FOR I say, through the grace givenunto me, to every man that is among you, not to

think of himself more highly than he ought to think,

but to think soberly, according as God hath dealt toevery man the measure of faith. For as we have manymembers in one body, and all members have not thesame office; so we, being many, are one body in Christ, and every one members one of another. Having thengifts differing according to the grace that is given to us,whether prophecy, let us prophesy according to theproportion of faith; or ministry, let us wait on  ourministering; or he that teacheth, on teaching; or he that

exhorteth, on exhortation: he that giveth, let him do itwith simplicity; he that ruleth, with diligence; he thatshoweth mercy, with cheerfulness.

Let love be without dissimulation. Abhor thatwhich is evil, cleave to that which is good. Be kindlyaffectioned one to another with brotherly love, inhonour preferring one another: not slothful inbusiness; fervent in spirit; serving the Lord; rejoicing inhope; patient in tribulation; continuing instant inprayer; distributing to the necessity of saints; given to

hospitality.Bless them which persecute you; bless, and curse

not. Rejoice with them that do rejoice, and weep withthem that weep. Be of the same mind one towardanother. Mind not high things, but condescend tomen of low estate. Be not wise in your own conceits.Recompense to no man evil for evil. Provide thingshonest in the sight of all men. If it be possible, asmuch as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men.

T that time: It came to pass on a certain day, thathe was teaching; and there were Pharisees and

And,behold, men brought on a bed a man which was takenwith palsy: and they sought means to bring him in,and to lay him before him. And when they could notfind by what way they might bring him in because ofthe multitude, they went upon the housetop, and lethim down through the tiling with his couch into themidst before Jesus. And when he saw their faith, hesaid unto him, Man, thy sins are forgiven thee. Andthe scribes and the Pharisees began to reason, saying,

Who is this which speaketh blasphemies? Who canforgive sins, but God alone? But when Jesus perceivedtheir thoughts, he answering said unto them, Whatreason ye in your hearts? Whether is easier, to say, Thysins be forgiven thee; or to say, Rise up and walk? Butthat ye may know that the Son of man hath powerupon earth to forgive sins, (he said unto the sick of thepalsy,) I say unto thee, Arise, and take up thy couch, and go into thine house. to look upon like a jasper and a sardius stone: and arainbow round about the throne, in sight like unto anemerald. And round about the throne four and twentyseats; and upon the seats I saw four and twenty elderssitting, clothed in white raiment; and on their headscrowns of gold: and out of the throne proceedlightnings and thunderings and voices. And sevenlamps of fire burning before the throne, which are theseven spirits of God; and before the throne as it were a

sea of glass, like unto crystal; and in the midst of thethrone, and round about the throne, four livingcreatures, full of eyes before and behind; the first onelike a lion, and the second like a calf, and the thirdhaving a face like a man, and the fourth like a flyingeagle; and every one of them had six wings; aroundand within they are full of eyes; and they rest not dayor night, saying,

Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God the Almighty,Which was, and which is, and which is to come.

And when those living beings give glory and honourand thanks to him that sitteth upon the throne, wholiveth for ever and ever, the four and twenty elders falldown before him that sitteth upon the throne, andworship him that liveth for ever and ever, and casttheir crowns before the throne, saying,

THE GOSPEL. St John 3. 1.

HERE was a man of the Pharisees, named

Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews: the same came toJesus by night, and said unto him, Rabbi, we knowthat thou art a teacher come from God: for no man cando these signs that thou doest, except God be withhim. Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verilyI say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannotsee the kingdom of God. Nicodemus saith unto him,How can a man be born when he is old? can he enterthe second time into his mother's womb, and be born?Jesus answered, Verily, verily I say unto thee, Except a

man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enterinto the kingdom of God. That which is born of theflesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit isspirit. Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must beborn again. The wind bloweth where it listeth, andthou hearest the sound thereof, but canst not tellwhence it cometh, and whither it goeth; so is every one

that is born of the Spirit. Nicodemus answered andsaid unto him, How can these things be? Jesusanswered and said unto him, Art thou a master ofIsrael, and knowest not these things? Verily, verily Isay unto thee, We speak that we do know, and testifythat we have seen; and ye receive not our witness. If Ihave told you earthly things, and ye believe not; howshall ye believe, if I tell you of heavenly things? Andno man hath ascended up to heaven, but he that camedown from heaven, even the Son of man, who is inheaven. And as Moses lifted up the serpent in thewilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up:that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, buthave eternal life.

E'en the same of old provided, When the Twelve, divinely guided, At the holy Table met.

Full and clear ring out thy chanting, Joy nor sweetestgrace be wanting To thy heart and soul today.

When we gather up the measure Of that Supper andits treasure, Keeping feast in glad array.

Lo, the new King's Table gracing, This new Passover ofblessing Hath fulfill'd the elder rite;

Now the new the old effaceth, Truth reveal'd theshadow chaseth, Day is breaking on the night.

What he did at Supper seated, Christ ordain'd to berepeated, His memorial ne'er to cease:

And, his word for guidance taking, Bread and wine we

hallow, making Thus our Sacrifice of peace. This the truth to Christians given, Bread becomes his

Flesh from heaven, Wine becomes his holy Blood.

Doth it pass thy comprehending? Yet by faith, thysight transcending, Wondrous things areunderstood.

Yea, beneath these signs are hidden Glorious things tosight forbidden; Look not on the outward sign.

Wine is pour'd and Bread is broken, But in either

sacred token Christ is here by power divine.Whoso of this Food partaketh, Rendeth not the Lord

nor breaketh: Christ is whole to all that taste.

Thousands are, as one, receivers; One, as thousands ofbelievers, Takes the Food that cannot waste.

Good and evil men are sharing One repast, a doompreparing Varied as the heart of man;

Doom of life or death awarded, As their days shall berecorded Which from one beginning ran.

When the Sacrament is broken, Doubt not in eachsever'd token, Hallow'd by the word once spoken,Resteth all the true content.

Nought the precious Gift divideth, Breaking but thesign betideth, He himself the same abideth, Nothingof his fullness spent.

ESUS said, Labour not for the meat which perisheth, but for that meat which endureth unto everlasting

life, which the Son of Man shall give unto you: for himhath God the Father sealed. Then said they unto him,What shall we do, that we might work the works ofGod? Jesus answered and said unto them, This is thework of God, that ye believe on him whom he hathsent. They said therefore unto him, What sign showestthou then, that we may see, and believe thee? whatdost thou work? Our fathers did eat manna in thedesert; as it is written, He gave them bread fromheaven to eat. Then Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily I say unto you, Moses gave you not that breadfrom heaven; but my Father giveth you the true breadfrom heaven. For the bread of God is he which comethdown from heaven, and giveth life unto the world.

Then said they unto him, Lord, evermore give us thisbread. And Jesus said unto them, I am the bread oflife: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and hethat believeth on me shall never thirst.
