Art Nouveau
The idea of collaboration of art, craft and industrial design was developed at BAUHAUS under the leadership of well-known artists. Founded 1919 in Weimar (Germany) at the “Hochschule für Bau und Gestaltung”, later located in Dessau and Berlin, BAUHAUS is still considered exemplatory in 20th century art & architecture.
“Modern Age” became a catch word for those trends towards the end of the 19th century which represented a break from all traditional aesthetics. As in art, architecture developed into modern aesthetics which continued through to the present.
Art Deco, the style of arts & crafts and painting between 1920 and 1930, derived from late art nouveau and received it’s name from the 1925 Paris exhibit of Arts & Crafts (arts decoratifs).
In the late 1880’s art nouveau started as an international art age dedicated to the uniform style of the “total work of art” from architecture to paintings & graphics, from furniture to fashion & jewelry – a common style which united all areas of artistic creation.
The Classic Period constitutes a history of thought which is considered superior in later years. In this sense, ancient Rome looked upon Greek literature and art. In Germany, the term encompasses the period around 1800, the Weimar Classic Period. Aesthetics and art of living go hand-in-hand.
In the wake of the Classic Period, more and more luxurious hardware was demanded by the well-off bourgeoisie of early industrialisation. Important foundries in Berlin and Paris, as per the requirements of architects and builders, manufactured exclusive hardware for their individual demands.
The Baroque Period, whose initial elements already appeared in 16th century Italy, developed by the end of the 17th century. Characteristics for its architecture are the basic forms which appear consistently in door and window hardware.
