Product Specifications

No external water or gas!The ARL 9900 X-ray spectrometer with its high performance and truly modularconfiguration has become the best selling instrument for process and qualitycontrol today.

The ARL 9900 OASIS version retains allthe advanced features and functions of itsparent product, while removing the need forexternal dependance such as water cooling, compressed air or detector gas supplies(depending on the configuration). It can betailored with: • A series of XRF monochromators for

simultaneous analysis • The innovative SmartGonio™

allowing coverage for sequential analysisof fluorine to uranium

• Alternatively the universal XRFgoniometer if lighter elements or specialcrystals are required

• An integrated XRD system for specificphase or mineral analysis

• Convenient and reliable geometry forpressed pellets with X-ray tube above sample

• Optional calibration with the ARL General Oxide program

• Optional “standard-less” analysis onunknown or non-routine samples with theQuantAS™ package on the universalgoniometer or the OptiQuant™ packageon the SmartGonio™

• Comprehensive sample loading options, from single position loading to 12position magazine up to a large X-Y auto-sampler and simple automation.

ARL 9900 OASISThe tailored XRF-XRD solution

The ARL 9900 OASIS is anindependent and modular X-rayinstrument, tailored to the needsof cement, mining and otherprocess and quality controlapplications. It maintains the high performance integrated XRF-XRD capabilities of its parent product, the ARL 9900 XP.

AdvantagesThe ARL 9900 OASIS brings the followingextra advantages to the user:• Minimized operating costs with no

external water supply necessary (neither city water nor water coolercircuit required)

• Reduced power consumption, with lowercost/capacity power regulation system (if needed)

• No need for an independent X-raydiffractometer and its related peripheralaccessories such as water-cooling,voltage stabilizer etc.

• No compromise on the analysis of keyoxides all along the production process, from the raw materials through theprocess related products to the final products

• Possibility of analysis of elements/oxideswith the goniometer playing the role ofan extra sequential XRF instrument within the same machine

Industries and applicationsThe ARL 9900 OASIS technology isparticularly designed for the followingindustries and applications:• Cement manufacturing• Selected mining applications• Iron & steel industry for slag analysis• Ceramics, refractories and related

oxide industries• Primary metals for major and minor

elements• Ferro-alloys

Examples ofanalytical solutions

1. Highly reliable integrated analysis The ARL 9900 OASIS is designed for theprocess and quality control laboratoriesrequiring highly reliable and integratedanalysis. Table 1 shows the analysis of aclinker sample including free lime repeated6 times.

The integrated XRD system of the ARL 9900 OASIS instrument is capable ofquantifying free lime concentration in aroutine and reliable manner. The uniquetechnology of this system means that thefree lime analysis is highly stable andrepeatable and can be monitored on-line.

The XRF analysis can be performedeither with a series of monochromators orwith the goniometer, either universalgoniometer or SmartGonio™. Table 1 provesthat fixed channels and goniometers showvery similar stability and repeatability.

2. Performance on light elementsThe limits of detection and good sensitivityachieved on both Na and Mg will satisfymost requirements, notably in cement andslags applications (Table 2). Fixed channelsor goniometer can be chosen for theirdetermination depending on the speed of analysis required.

3. General Oxide calibration packageFor an accurate routine analysis of majorand minor oxides in materials such ascement, slags, refractories and ceramics,Thermo has developed the General Oxidecalibration program based on the fusionbead technique (Table 3). The materials canbe either pre-ignited or non-ignited. In thelatter case, automatic Loss on Ignition orGain on Ignition calculation is carried out.

4. Non-routine analysisQuantAS™ is a powerful scan based“standard-less” program that providesanalysis for 70 elements in 12 minutes or less. It is ideally suited for thecharacterization of different materials not covered by routine analysis withcalibrated programs.

When the SmartGonio™ is fitted, theoptional OptiQuant™ program can beconsidered. It is a version of UniQuant® that is specifically designed for use withthis innovative goniometer. It allows fordetermination of up to 75 elements in allsorts of matrices and samples. Its “peak to peak” acquisition mode allows longercounting time to be used per element whichensures better precision of analysis.
