2014 TCA YOLO Teen Fitness Camp

The 2014 TCA YOLO Teen Fitness Camp, a partnership with New Orleans Recreat ion development Commission (NORDC) served 64 youth at Xavier University Convocation Annex and the TCA Eastshore Village Community Center. YOLO, Youth Opposing Lives of Obesity, provided 13-15 year olds with an opportunity to improve their health through fitness activity and health education, as well as providing them with opportunities for career exploration. Each week the campers have a scheduled field trip activity. The YOLO program has been designed to give each camper the opportunity to express their creativity, be stimulated; physically active and most of all have FUN. The campers are empowered to develop their skills to become peer leaders, to make healthy choices and to take responsibility for their own actions.

An average day at YOLO includes:

• Circuit Training – each camper receives 45 minutes of circuit training. Exercises may include free weights, push-ups, crunches, and a host of other aerobic exercises.

• Conflict Resolution – the curriculum provided teaches students to be peacemakers and how to find constructive ways to managing conflicts.

• Powerblast Topics – campers evaluate and discuss healthy topics pertaining to their eating habits and physical activity routines.

• Career Exploration – Campers get to understand and explore the various career pathways and education requirements. As well as explore various college/universities.

• Junior Achievement Finance Park – is designed to inspire and prepare young people to succeed in a global economy. They are first introduced to personal finance and career explorations through classroom instruction complemented by hands on experience where they apply learned concepts in a life-like community.

• Activities are all about FUN, FUN and more FUN! Activities range from kickball, dodge ball, basketball, volleyball and more.

The Little Woods Homeowner’s Association played an intricate part in the success of our camp by volunteering to assist with the TCA Summer Feeding Program. Through a partnership with NO KID Hungry/Share Our Strength, as well as The Healthy School Collaborative with KIPP & Sodexho, the summer feeding program fed kids and teens 18years and under for free. Through this partnership, our YOLO campers were provided a healthy breakfast and lunch daily. A special thanks to the New Orleans Delta Foundation, who sponsored the YOLO Teen Camp fitness equipment.
