We all watched the news with horror a few years ago as ISIS conquered large portions of Iraq. Most heinous of all was ISIS’ ultimatum given to the Christians of Iraq: convert to Islam or leave the country. If you stay, you will be put to death! Christians have been in Iraq for 2,000 years, and this demand placed upon them was despicable. Thankfully, a coalition of Iraqi and US troops has almost completely driven ISIS out of Iraq. Christians in Iraq are now able to return to their homes. What they found, however, was horrible. Hundreds of churches and thousands of homes were either destroyed or damaged by ISIS. Here is what one priest in Iraq, Father Salar Kajo, described when he returned to his parish, St. George, in the Nineveh village of Batnaya: “I was the first one to arrive. The ISIS flag was still here. It hurt a lot. I removed it and placed the cross. I stayed for 10-15 minutes and then I left because I didn’t recognize my church. Koranic scriptures were written on the wall and they practiced shooting in the sanctuary. But afterwards, little by little, I realized this was the reality. We have to use it as a starting point to begin again.”
The Papal agency known as “Aid to the Church in Need” is leading an effort to raise funds to help Christians in Iraq rebuild their homes and churches. This weekend we are taking up a special second collection to help rebuild the Church in Iraq. All donations will be sent to Aid to the Church in Need. I know that there have been a lot of financial requests put on us from many different causes, all of which are worthy, but I especially encourage everyone to do whatever we can to help the Christians of Iraq who have suffered so much. Please be generous in your support of this cause. You can find more information about the situation on the following website: www.churchinneed.org/NinevehPlains.

You might be aware that Cardinal Dolan has been very vocal
about the need to bring the Gospel message of Jesus Christ to
young people and their families throughout the Archdiocese. It is
so important now, more than ever, to reach students and their
parents with this beautiful message. What you might not be
aware of, is that the Archdiocese is promoting the You’re Amaz-
ing Invitation to do just that and it’s happening on Wednesday,
April 25th at 6:30PM at the Westchester County Civic Center in
White Plains. Your parish is invited. This is a great way for your
parish to participate in the Cardinal’s call throughout the Archdi-
ocese. You’re Amazing Missionaries of Hard as Nails Ministries
will be joining international speaker and author, Justin Fatica
along with a 25-50 person choir and over 50 priests available to
hear confessions on that night. It’s going to be an inspirational
night for so many. Tickets are valued at $14.95, but each parish
in the Archdiocese can pre-order up to 100 free tickets for youth
and families, while space is still available. We would love for you
to join us. Please call: 914-902-3255 to register! In addition, we
have a unique VIP opportunity following the Cardinal’s mass the
morning of April 25th, but space is limited so please call if you
have any questions or would like more information about the
experience, and remember, you’re amazing!
