The mention in the Gospel of the disciples wish to destroy the inhabitants of the Samaritan village for lack of hospitality presents Jesus with the opportuni-ty to rebuke this request for approval to violently act out their anger. St. Paul places focus on the basis for our interactions with others to be love. Jesus' remind-er to his disciples is clear: "live and let live". Coex-istence of the Samaritans and Jesus was not only ac-ceptable but approved. Might this concept be relevant in our country today? Are we covertly/overtly gravitating toward enclaves of exclusiveness, fueled by fear, expressed by anger/violence toward those "different" -the modern day Samaritans? History suggests what can happen when groups of people are scapegoated/targeted as the cause of a society's perceived inadequacies. Pope Benedict in "Caritas in Veritate" (53): "The de-velopment of peoples depends, above all, on the recognition that the human race is a single family working together in true communion, not simply a group of subjects who happen to live side by side." Pope Paul VI in "Pastoral Constitution on the Church in the Modern World" (29): "True, all men are not alike from the point of view of varying physical power and the diversity of intellectual and moral re-sources. Nevertheless, with respect to the fundamen-tal rights of the person, every type of discrimination, whether social or cultural, whether based on sex, race, color, social condition, language or religion, is to be overcome and eradicated as contrary to God's intent." As a 21st Century Catholic what is my response to efforts to "call down from heaven to consume them"? Any input or questions please send them to: Doug Harper [email protected]

Are you looking for a satisfying but flexible volun-teer opportunity? Peninsula Food Runners is a vol-unteer organization dedicated to alleviate hunger and reduce food waste. We are building our volunteer base in Santa Clara County and invite you to join us. Peninsula Food Runners volunteers pick up excess perishable and prepared food from participating Do-nors (restaurants, caterers, bakeries, corporate cafe-terias, etc.), and then deliver the food directly to our Recipients (shelters, day centers for the elderly, Boys and Girls Clubs, etc.). Shifts normally take less than 90 minutes and can work around your schedule. Come join our team of volunteers! Go to peninsulafoodrunners.org and register under Volunteer Sign-Up.
