Jubilee Year of Mercy
July 3rd 2016 14th Sunday in Ordinary Time
Last Sunday, Jesus rebuked James and John for wanting to "call down fire from heaven" (Luke 9:54-55) on an unwelcoming town. As he sends forth disciples today,
Jesus again forbids retaliation against non-receptive listeners (10:10-11), showing us how to be Jesus' "missionaries of mer-cy" this Jubilee Year of Mercy. Like the first disciples, we are sent not to proclaim ourselves but Jesus. As Jesus sent them in pairs, so are we also to work together in the community of the Church. We often describe the Church as Isaiah describes Jeru-salem in today's first reading, our comforting, nurturing Mother (Isaiah 66:13). So, going forth gently, like lambs among wolves (Luke 10:3), we share comforting peace, nurturing food and drink (Luke's image for Eucharist), and Jesus' healing promise of unfailing, unconditional mercy (10:5, 7, 9). Thus Jesus bids us proclaim the kingdom of God by showing what God's king-dom looks like in action. "Go, preach the Gospel," Pope Francis' saintly namesake of Assisi is said to have instructed his first friars, "and when necessary, use words!"

DIVINE SAVIOUR SCHOOL
We are never alone, not really. We live in relationships, in community. That's the way we come into the world, after all, with a mother laboring to deliver us into the human community. God--being Father, Son, Holy Spirit--is a mysterious community who intends us to live in relationship with God and others, always and forever. Stories of abandonment or abuse affect us strongly precisely because we all know the deep human need to be embraced by a loving family. Our reading from Isaiah today describes God as a gentle mother, playing with us, her children, and comforting us. This same God who cares for us so intimately chose to enter our human family through Mary. Jesus, her son, grew strong in her care. And, as Luke tells us today, when the time came to spread his gospel message, Jesus insisted on community: he sent his disciples in pairs. The instructions Jesus gives his seventy-two missionaries reinforce the importance of community. Jesus wants his disciples to build healthy rela-tionships wherever they go, wishing peace on new acquaintances, sharing gifts of healing and faith, and graciously accepting hospitality in whatever form it is offered. These practical tips still apply to us today, modern disciples of Jesus at work in the world.
Nunca estamos solos; bueno no siempre.

DID YOU KNOW?
Swimming is a fun way to have some fun and beat the heat during the summer. Parents should teach their children about swimming safety, including how to identify and handle uncomfortable situations. Alt-hough you may be watching closely to make sure your kids are safe in the water, don’t forget about when they’re walking around, sitting out by the pool, using the restrooms or out of sight. Teach your children what to do when they feel uncomfortable at the pool, and let them know it is okay to walk away and find a parent or trusted adult at any time. For more information email [email protected] or call (213) 637-7227.
