A Year of Remarkable Growth

What a remarkable year for this region and children, youth and theirfamilies that Campagna Academy is proud to have served in 2016!Campagna’s Board of Directors and I are proud to have led the initiative that expanded our continuum of care, as we planned for and realized the expansion of our residential program for youth with intellectual/developmental disabilities - the only program in Lake County, Indiana, that offers this level of therapeutic care to these youth.

As CEO of Campagna, I am most proud of Campagna’s staff and the broad diversification of programs that ensure our young clients have access to nearby support of their families. You have my commitment to continue to look for opportunities that bring new, needed programs into our region that enhance therapeutic services for at-risk children and youth. As we face ongoing andchanging needs of this vulnerable, underserved population, please know that my staff and I will continue to focus upon improving all internal processes and implementing best practices and evidenced-based models of care.

On behalf of Campagna Academy’s Board of Directors and staff, I wish to especially acknowledgeCampagna’s dedicated volunteers, individual donors and organizations, and those managing charitable foundations listed in this report. Words cannot fully express the magnitude of positivechange that your generous investments of time, talent, and treasure have made in the lives of disadvantaged children, youth and their families!

I encourage you to take some time to briefly tour our beautiful campus and learn more about Campagna’s programs firsthand. With your support, together as a team, all of us are Restoring Hope and Building Dreams, which is more than just our mission statement. It represents our commitment to work towards enriching young lives and nurturing their ability to dream biggerdreams and hope for a brighter future!

Sincerely,

46In 2016 our campus became home to an additional 24 youthwith severe trauma histories, who are diagnosed with a learning or developmental disability bringing our total capacity to 46 kids in our Northlake Program. We are proud to report that Campagna Academy continues to rise to thechallenge of investing in the lives of children with intellectualand developmental disabilities.

In 2016, 89% of our residential clients discharged to a less restrictive placement like a foster home, biological home, group home, independent living program or day treatmentprogram. This is 16% higher than the state of Indiana’s average73%*. At Campagna we strive to ensure our kids grow up intheir own communities in the least restrictive setting. *Based on 2015 IARCA outcomes.

Substance abuse affects many youth in our communities, and at Campagna our youth in need of addiction treatment receive treatment in our Adolescent Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP). IOP is designed to help youth develop the skills necessary to lead healthy and fulfilling lives free of addictive substances. In 2016 we had 34 clients graduate from our Substance Abuse Program.

In 2016, Campagna volunteers donated more than 4,800 volunteer hours with an in-kind value of over a $110,000. Our 428 volunteers filled a variety of essential roles fromfundraising to teaching yoga, pet therapy, tutoring, administrative support, construction work, painting and gardening. Thank you to our volunteers for donating their time to make a difference in the lives of the children we serve!

In 2016 we added two recreational therapists to our team allowing us to expand our recreation therapy campus wide.Recreation therapy engages our residents in fun activities suchas music, swimming, softball, volleyball, and games enhancingtheir functioning level, independence and over all well-being.

Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT)Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) was created in the late 1970s to treat chronically mentally ill patients with Borderline Personality disorder (BPD) by Dr. Marsha Linehan. It is a cognitive behavioral treatment that addresses thethinking and behaviors of an individual. DBT is based on accepting the client forwho they are but asking them to change at the same time. Treatment of an individual includes teaching them skills and strategies based on the four mod-ules which include Mindfulness, Interpersonal Effectiveness, Emotional Regula-tion, and Distress Tolerance. The clients work through the different modules anduse individual, group and family therapy to learn and master the skills. In heroriginal treatment manual, Cognitive-Behavioral Treatment of Borderline Personality Disorder (1993), Linehan hypothesizes that any comprehensive psychotherapy must meet five critical functions. The therapy must:

n Enhance and maintain the client's motivation to changen Enhance the client's capabilitiesn Ensure that the client's new capabilities are generalized to all relevant

environmentsn Enhance the therapist's motivation to treat clients while also enhancing the

therapist's capabilitiesn Structure the environment so that treatment can take place

The unique thing about DBT is that it allows the therapist to expand their skills and reduce burnout among treatment providers.

DBT is used in residential settings due to the consistency in treatment it provides to mentally ill/behaviorally challenged clients. It is considered the "gold standard" in treatment due to being universally recognized as a scientifically based treatment after randomized studies were conducted. Campagna utilizes DBT skills with clients in all settings and attempts to help theclients become proficient with skill usage. Our goal is so they can eventuallystep into a lower level of care or return home to their family.

Community SupportThe expansion of our Northlake Program serving boyswith intellectual/developmental disabilities would nothave been possible without the generous donationof $75,000 from the John W. Anderson Foundation. This grant allowed us to renovate one of our vacantcottages that was housing office space to a brandnew residential living space.

In 2016 we also received a $25,000 grant from the Legacy Foundation that enabled us to build a sensory room in one of our residential cottages;and a $6,368 grant from the Crown Point CommunityFoundation that equipped this room with sensoryitems. This funding has made a great impact in thetherapeutic treatment of adolescent clients with intellectual/developmental disabilities.

Getting Strong & Giving BackAt Campagna Academy Getting Strong & GivingBack is a core component of our programing. We encourage our youth to give back to theircommunity through volunteer and community impact projects. Every year the youth of Campagna select a non-profit to benefit from a fundraising event that they host and plan. Thisyear they selected Compassionate Canines topartner with for "It's All About The Pet Event".

Saturday, February 20, 2016 marked Campagna’s4th annual event on our campus. The gym wasbustling, with over 25 pet rescue groups, pet vendors, and many supporters from the community.

Our kids worked hard planning out details for the event. They worked on decorations, baking homemade dog treats and making dog blanketsthat were auctioned off. This event brought greatawareness to pet adoption and fostering in this region. Through it, our youth were also able tocontribute over $1,300 to Compassionate CaninesPet Therapy Group, to further their meaningfulwork. We are also excited to share that severaldogs and cats found forever homes on our campus that day!
