2019Annual ReportConnect • Empower • Thrive

From the Executive Director:

The Parkinson Association of the Rockies (PAR) had our best year yet in 2019 hitting a milestone of $1M raised to provide even more programs and services to the Colorado Parkinson community. The Association remains committed to our mission of connecting and empowering people with Parkinson’s to thrive through educating, creating awareness, promoting research and supporting those with the disease, their family and friends and the Colorado community.

In 2019, the Association experienced tremendous growth in services including exercise classes, support groups and educational events. We also continued our focus on developing satellite communities in areas that have not had consistent access to programs and services designed specifically for the Parkinson’s community. In developing these satellite communities, we work with community input to ensure we are providing services that will be most impactful for each unique area. PAR also focused on two underserved groups within our community: newly diagnosed and young onset populations. We developed a three-part series for those diagnosed within 1-3 years focusing on Parkinson’s basics, medications and treatments as well as an introduction to PD SELF, a self-efficacy program that allows those newly diagnosed to develop a plan and take control of their diagnosis. PAR also had its first educational seminar for young onset people with Parkinson’s focused on helping them understand how to best navigate the work force with the disease.

In 2019, PAR added three new board members who are very passionate about our mission and will lend their expertise to help PAR grow in a strategic and effective manner.

We continue to build strong relationships within our community and have seen our partners and donors increase their participation and giving which is essential to our continued growth. We are grateful to the community for the on-going support of the Parkinson Association of the Rockies.

Sincerely,

Jodi Brown Executive Director

PAR VISION To provide the care that counts on the way to a cure

PAR MISSION The Parkinson Association of the Rockies (PAR) connects and

empowers people with Parkinson’s to thrive through educating, creating awareness, promoting research and supporting those with the disease, their families and the Colorado community.

What does it mean to Connect, Empower and Thrive?BASED ON OUR VISION AND MISSION, WE STRIVE TO BE THE FIRST POINT OF CONTACT AND HUB OF INFORMATION FOR PEOPLE WITH PARKINSON’S AND THEIR FAMILIES.

Connect Over 17,000 Coloradans are living courageously with Parkinson’s disease and instead of letting the disease define them, they choose to define themselves and we help them do just that! At PAR, we provide resources for People With Parkinson’s (PWPs) at all points of their diagnosis. We are connecting PWPs to meaningful support, resources and beneficial programs in the community.

Connection has been shown to prevent social isolation and to provide encouragement in PWPs. Through our support groups and third-party fundraisers, not only are we providing that connection for those with Parkinson’s, but we are connecting family, friends, neighbors, colleagues and the entire community to learn and engage with Parkinson’s.

EmpowerThis is not easily grasped by anyone, but when empowerment is achieved it can go a long way for someone with Parkinson’s and their loved ones. At PAR, we encourage every PWP to discover and claim their own personal empowerment in order to better manage their disease. Whether this is independently done or in a group, we strive to provide resources so that everyone, including Care Partners, can be empowered.

PAR has focused on empowering those in the Parkinson’s community with free exercise classes and educational programs as well as fundraising events. Our goal in providing these resources is to help people with Parkinson’s live life to the fullest without any limitations.

ThriveMany of our free programs and services are supported by grants and sponsorships from our generous partners, but our most meaningful contributions are from those who partake in our lively events or host their own. By encouraging participation, PAR’s constituents thrive by staying active, connecting with others and spreading awareness at fun events with friends and family.

BASED ON OUR CORE VALUES WE ARE DEDICATED TO INCREASE OUR FOOTPRINT IN COLORADO AND ENSURE WE CONTINUE TO GROW AND REMAIN FINANCIALLY STABLE, ALLOWING US TO MEET OUR GOALS AND CARRY OUT OUR MISSION.

ConnectingRural Outreach & InvolvementThe Parkinson Association of the Rockies works hard to expand our programs and services to reach communities across the state. In order to gauge the programs and services that work best within each community, PAR began to establish satellite communities in strategic areas that have limited access to programs and services specific to Parkinson’s disease. By the end of 2019, PAR had a total of eight satellite communities.

Every satellite community has a leadership team that works in conjunction with PAR and provides feedback to staff. Even though the communities follow PAR’s basic principles, they have their own programs and services that are developed for their community. PAR recognized that many minority communities in Colorado were underserved and has made the development of minority communities a strategic initiative for 2020.

Support GroupsSupport groups have been the heart of PAR since 1981 and continuously prove to be one of the greatest resources we provide as an organization. For many in the Parkinson’s community, support groups serve as a wonderful network of resources, providing insight and recommendations on how to live your best life with Parkinson’s. Throughout 2019, almost 1,200 individuals participated in 36 PAR sponsored monthly support groups and ten Care Partner support groups. These groups regularly featured informational speakers coupled with peer-to-peer discussions.

Patient and Family ServicesCelebrating her 20 years of service in 2019, Cari Friedman LCSW, our Patient and Family Services Director, provided one-on-one assessments to 1,916 PWPs and their Care Partners.

In 20 years, requests for one-on-one assessments has increased tremendously and to meet demand, PAR transitioned in-home assessments to virtual house calls for individuals who were newly diagnosed or had a change in their progression - while also providing office visits to those who wanted to visit in person. Thanks to Cari’s expertise she had a total of 1,794 phone calls, six home visits, 89 virtual visits and 27 PAR office visits.

To celebrate Cari’s 20 years of service in September, we had a special ceremony at our e3 Conference and again at our Party for Parkinson’s event for a more formal and deserving recognition. She values her time with clients and their stories and is fantastic at connecting individuals to information, referrals and the Parkinson community.

VolunteersThe number of loyal volunteers assisting with our educational programs, special events and serving committees continued to grow in 2019. PAR values the hard work and feedback our volunteers provide. We recognize the importance of our loyal volunteers who return often to help PAR and PWPs build strong relationships and awareness in the community. As PAR continues to grow, we welcome new volunteers to join our team of loyal volunteers to participate in new opportunities for involvement.

Young Professionals Council (YPC)At the end of 2018, PAR developed YPC to increase awareness and raise funds for programs and services while developing future philanthropic and non-profit leaders in the greater community. YPC members connect and network with other like-minded young professionals who care about making a positive and longstanding difference in the Parkinson’s community.

By the end of 2019, YPC had a total of 12 council members and raised over $3,200.

Exercise ClassesThe demand for Parkinson’s exercise classes continues; from 56 classes at the end of 2018, PAR increased the number of classes available by nine percent for a total of 61 weekly exercise classes across Colorado.

After PAR made the switch to free exercise classes in 2018 funded by PAR’s Pay It Forward campaign, the number of PWP’s and their Care Partners attending the classes has noticably increased. In 2019, PAR expanded classes with high activity into our satellite communities such as Pueblo, Greeley and Carbondale. Our popular classes included in the expansion are: Power Punch Parkinson’s, yoga and dance.

For the safety and protection of PAR’s constituents, we require a liability waiver and medical consent form to be filled out in order to attend PAR exercise class.

Words from a PAR instructor, Sheila Bellow, NASA, ACE“While working with PAR, I have developed many strong relationships over the years with my participants, they are my family. So when they are struggling, I hurt along with them. I only hope that I have, in some way, brought them laughter and determination on this adventure!”

Exercise SummitIn addition to offering weekly classes in 2019, our exercise instructors were given the opportunity to participate in an annual Exercise Summit. The Exercise Summit brings together instructors and gives them information on how to improve their classes and tailor them specifically toPWPs. At the 2019 Summit, Erica DeMarch, DPT and founder of Step and Connect Balance Matters, gave an in-depth presentation on the different factors that play into developing better balance; instructors were encouraged to ask questions and share their own resources, solutions and exercises.

Empowering Through exercise

New in 2019: Parkinson’s 101 for the Recently Diagnosed and Young Onset ProgramsParkinson’s 101 for the Recently Diagnosed is a three-part series for those diagnosed within one-three years and their Care Partners to help them navigate their journey. This program discussed Parkinson’s basics, medications and treatments and PD SELF, a self-efficacy program designed to develop a plan and take control for newly diagnosed. PAR’s young onset program focused on how to best navigate the work force with the disease.

“Thank you! This helped support me to help support my mom... and the information was incredibly helpful and everyone was so generous with time and spirit.”

New in 2019: Care Partner SummitIn November 2019, PAR successfully hosted their first Care Partner Summit, an educational event exclusively for Care Partners of PWPs. This event gave attendees a better understanding of Parkinson’s disease as well as strategies on maintaining a healthy mindset and positive outlook on life. With over 50 in attendance, participants came together to share their journeys, encourage one another and discuss what they have learned along the way.

“I am not alone - everyone in the room ‘gets it’. We learn to find joy and be present in the moment.”

E3 Conference On September 7, our largest group to date gathered at our 7th Annual e3 Conference to get up, get moving and get inspired! Over 500 PWPs, Care Partners, family members and community partners gathered to be educated, empowered and energized through a series of presentations that ranged from balance to mindfulness and meditation. They learned about the psychological changes that can occur with Parkinson’s and were given the information and tools to live more mindfully and practice meditation in their daily lives.

Throughout the day, everyone was given the opportunity to move during our ENERGIZE breaks that highlighted exercises that help strengthen, lengthen and alleviate Parkinson’s symptoms.

Ahead of the CurveAhead of the Curve programs are two-hour educational seminars about Parkinson’s held in the Denver Metro area. Attendees learned about a range of topics including non-motor symptoms, cognition, sleep and fatigue and palliative care. Participants were able to ask questions directly to a Parkinson’s professional and gain insight into how to live well with Parkinson’s.

In coordination with movement disorder specialists, neurologists, speech therapists, nurses and other Parkinson’s professionals, PAR hosted six Ahead of the Curves serving over 150 individuals in 2019.

Chat with the Parkinson ProSimilar to Ahead of the Curve programs and in support of our rural outreach, the Chat with the Parkinson Pro program provides educational programming with Parkinson’s professionals to communities outside of the Denver Metro area.

In 2019, PAR increased programming to a total of 12 seminars, serving over 341 individuals with Parkinson’s disease and their families living in rural areas with limited access to Parkinson’s professionals due to geographical barriers.

Empowering Through education

Thriving… PAR encourages the entire community, PWPs, Care Partners, family members and community partners, to attend our events or host third-party fundraisers. By doing so, not only are we raising critical funds but we are connecting and empowering the Parkinson’s community to thrive by staying active, meeting others and spreading awareness through participation in fun events with friends and family.

SIGNATURE EVENTS

PAR was honored to continue this as a signature event called Play Fore PAR in honor of Pat and raised over $61,000!

THIRD-PARTY FUNDRAISERS

Punch-A-ThonHosted by a PAR board member and PWP, the TITLE Boxing Club in Fort Collins opened their doors for PWPs and the public to make pledges and take a jab while raising donations based on the number of rounds they complete. During the event, participants joined in up to 20, three-minute boxing rounds.

Red Neck RideThe Annual Red Neck Ride is organized by a PWP whose sole mission is to raise awareness and funds for Coloradans with Parkinson’s who struggle with financial limitations. He started this 24-mile bike ride through the foothills of Larimer county seven years ago with 17 bicyclists; through his tireless efforts and some support from PAR, this event had over 140 participants in 2019.

Breaking Par for PAR (AKA Gary Bass Memorial) This annual golf event is hosted by loving friends and family of Gary Bass who had been diagnosed with Parkinson’s. For the 7th year, friends and family of Gary were able to enjoy an 18-hole tournament in a 4-man scramble format with fun games throughout the tournament.

Ski 4 PDThis event is hosted by Yampa Valley Parkinson Support Network’s (YVPSN) satellite community in Steamboat Springs to raise awareness and strengthen outreach of Parkinson’s in Yampa Valley. This event brings an abundance of attention year after year and the money raised from Ski 4 PD goes directly back into Yampa Valley’s six weekly exercise classes as well as their support group functions.

FINANCIAlS2019 EVALUATIONIn 2019 we streamlined our services to be more effective and efficient in helping the individuals in the Colorado Parkinson’s community. PAR was able to surpass a milestone of raising $1M. This is a huge victory for PAR and the Parkinson’s community in Colorado. With this funding, PAR will continue to grow programs and services, educational events and fundraising initiatives that support our values to Connect, Empower and Thrive in 2020.

We were very effective in addressing our strategic initiatives for 2019• Develop support network for newly diagnosed and young onset individuals • Use data segmentation to develop marketing strategies that increase participation, donations and support • Develop satellite communities in rural areas• Increase awareness of PAR throughout Colorado • Break the $1M revenue barrier
