    LEARN THELESSONS OF

THE PAST See past mistakes and experiences

as an opportunity to build anefficient design (Example: Roxasblvd. storm surge 2011)

The redevelopment of it aims nothingless than to bring pride of place

    back to the capital

    Zero or strictly controlled billboards.

Lanes and paths for bikes and

    pedestrians along entire length

    boulevard.

    ENCOURAGE

    THE MIXING

    OF USES ANDACTIVITIES

The urban design encompassesdifferent types of occupancywhich creates a variety forpeoples activity that makes it aneconomically competentenvironment.

The plan of the place is designedfor both entertainment and forbusiness purposes.

There are condominiums in thearea, mixed use buildings, hotels, parks, and restaurants.

The places in the area areadjacent to each other thatmade it accessible to peoplewho like to walk.

    ENCOURAGE

    PEDESTRIAN

FREEDOM Provides enough freedom to walk, but not safe enough. (How can youwalk freely when you are not safe?)

    Lack of security

Pedestrians are found also in the

road, wide enough to separate thepeople using it and the cars. It's agood solution to avoid accidentsalong the main road for it is wide tocross at.

BUILD LEGIBLEENVIRONMENTS Trees, benches, lamp posts must be

placed uniformly to create balanceand legibility in design

Use of variety of elements such astrees, benches, bollards, lamp posts, concrete barrier, fences, bicycleracks, bike lanes, pedestrian lanes,

    straight and convenient roadway

There are signage and directionsinstalled whether crossing the streetor finding your destination. It alsoshows that the area is composed of

    government institutions that areeasily recognizable.

    BUILD LASTING

    ENVIRONMENTS

The use of bricks forwalkway/pavement is a good ideainstead of concrete (Bricks laid over

sand/gravel allows significantamount of rainwater to enter theground, thus minimizing the flood)

Since it was situated along the bay,Roxas Boulevard is considered to be

unsafe during typhoons. There wasan incident where Manila Bayseawall had been destroyed due tothe intense impact of the waveswhich took time on its rehabilitation.

It was also a reclaimed lot which I

know we have no control whennature will claim back what belongsto it.

    CONTRIBUTE

    TO THE

    GREATERWHOLE

Roxas Boulevard really doescontribute to the greater whole. Ithas structures that promote tourism

and increase the economy. Having been the considered as a

trademark of Philippine tourism, itsimage and urban design can greatlyaffect the countrys image andimpression to foreign visitors since it

also considered as the premiergateway to the countrys seat ofpower. It has welcomed hundreds ofpresidents, heads of state, primeministers, kings and queens, andother dignitaries during official visitsto the Philippines. The boulevard hasalways been an integral part of thenations history, and will remain so forcenturies to come.
