Dear Friends,

I suddenly looked at the calendar and discovered that it is time again to write toall of you. We need to write many personal letters to you who have given so generously for our needs here. Don't give up hope, you will hear from us soon. Wevalue your confidence and relationship with us in the Lord's work.

Today is a beautiful, bright sunny day. Spring is in the air, and the trees andflowers are budding out for the new year. The weather is warming and I doubt thatthere will be more frost this season. We just came from the airport, where wewaved goodbye to Mrs. Thomson from Joplin, Missouri, who is MarciaThomson'smother, one of our missionaries. Paul Pennington, a student at OBC, and son ofJack and Peggy Pennington, who has spent several weeks here, was also flying outtoday. A bit of news that surprised us -- we received a telegram saying that Kar-olyn's folks, the Walter Goodmans, plan to arrive in Salisbury on the 19th of August for a short visit. By the time you receive this letter, we should be enjoying anice time with family.

No doubt you all heard about the bomb blast which shook Salisbury a few days a-go. This is one of the first, and certainly the worst incident of terrorism in thiscity. We were terribly shocked by this destruction and death. Since this has happened, every store in town has adopted security measures, similar to those in Belfast. Fvery shopper is closely scrutinized when he enters the store. All shoppingbags are looked into, and schools have put emergency plans into action. Anotherincident might not happen for a long time, but at least people are more on the alertfor it. There is absolutely no terror here. We don't feel any danger, and continueto move freely through all of the African areas. So we do not want you to be tooconcerned about us. We do appreciate, however, the concern which many have expressed on our behalf. But it seems that this city is much like Belfast. Life goeson, day to day, even though everyone knows that there is a potential for trouble. We pray daily for reason and common sense to prevail, and that the leaders canyet work out something satisfactory for all.

In July we travelled out to Chidamoyo for the wedding celebration of RaphaelNyamutora, who has worked with us for several years. This was a very excitingoccasion. Karloyn has been asked to make the wedding dress and also the fourmaid's dresses. Amy decorated a beautiful cake for the affair. Most of the wedding party was from town, so we took them with us in the Kombi. Sunday morningthe congregation gathered for the worship service. The sermon of the day was tobe my wedding message. Everything went well, and the church was full. It is always an impressive scene, when two Christian people are united in marriage.

After the ceremony we all went to the Nyamutora village, where many preparations had been made. We were served large dishes of rice and sadza, with chicken and goat. After that we had cake and cool drinks. Many gifts and money werepresented to the couple. There had never been such a wedding celebration outthere, mainly, I think, because of the high respect in which Raphael was held byeveryone there.

On the way back home, we stopped in at Sinoia where they had just dedicated anew church building. Their church meeting was continuing on Monday. Karolyntaught one class, and I preached the message of the morning. All in all it was avery enjoyable trip. We don't take too many trips out of town these days, becauseof the security situation, so that made it even more a special treat.

Since we have opened the new building in Glen Norah, we have experienced avery steady growth. From attendances of 50-70, now we are having 80 to 100people each Sunday. On a recent Sunday there were nearly 130 people in attendance. In the past two weeks there have been six baptisms at Glen Norah and one at Hun-yani. The Hunyani work has been gaining new impetus recently. The congregationdecided to move from the old location, and are now meeting in the small home of

Page 3: Ammerman Bruce Karolyn 1977 Rhodesia

one of the members. The room is always over-crowed, but there is a spirit of cooperation and enthusiasm which was not there previously. Two men came to renewtheir faith in Christ recently. Karolyn has been having larger groups for her Tuesday ladies' group, and I'm sure that this is having a steadying affect on the total work.

I could tell you much about the Bible correspondence work. Yesterday Raphaeland I worked solidly all day, marking, recording, filing, typing, etc. Finally wehad prepared 176 lessons for mailing. We can see definite results from this work.Every city and centre in the country is being touched, and many have expressed thejoy of new relationship with the Lord through the course. Someone wrote, "I amvery glad and proud with your Bible studies. I have seen some of my friends whoare also studying the same course. They were the drinkers, smokers, and badmanners. But now they are the seekers of God's words, and I would like you tosend me the lessons too". Another wrote, "I thank you very much for the certificateyou sent me. You helped me to understand the Bible better.. .Now I'm a new person in everything because of your lessons". We are always gratified by these letters.I could tell you so many things which students have written to us.

School will soon be out, and my Scripture classes will cease until the new termopens. Amy and Tod will be only too glad for the month vacation, though they willmiss the special activities--basketball, soccer, tennis, and the Friday eveningChristian Youth meetings.

All for now. May God be with you all.

Yours in His service.

Bruce & Karolyn

Dear Friends and Loved Ones,Hello to one and all, as we take this opportunit/through the Herald to share with

you our latest happenings here in Salisbury. When missionaries get together for avisit, it seems that it isn't long until one or more begin to moan and say, "Oh, it'stime to write another newsletter!" I don't know why it is a difficult thing to do.Maybe it is just because we increasingly find it difficult to think what will be interesting to you all back home. But when we receive your letters, commenting on theHerald, and thanking us for sending it out, then we know it is worthwhile. Of courseit could never be done without those willing hands and hearts in Carthage, Missouri, who do all the real work. We are so grateful to Marcelle and Barbara.

Many things have happened since we last wrote to you. It has been a busy timehere in Rhodesia. Besides this, our emotions keep getting stirred up with the ever-increasing conflict which is going on. Some days it just feels like a heavy load onour hearts. When we meet with our African brethren, we hear their discussionsand thoughts. Their families are really suffering out in the Reserves. There areso many things which they can't understand. Their obvious aims for the future arevery understandable. Then we meet our white friends, and we honestly shed tearswith them, as they speak of their loves ones who have been ambushed or injured insome way. The feeling of bitterness is growing, and there just doesn't seem to beany way of bridging the gap. It has all been left too late. The legislation to remo\ediscrimination is coming, but it is doubtful if it will help now. Saturday afternoonwe^Visited. gpod friends, members of the church here in town. Rhoda's brother and -wife were both killed last week in an ambush. We really feel inadequate^we can onlylisten and try to share the comfort from God's Word, and pray that peace will sooncome to this land.

A very special happening since writing was the visit of Mr. & Mrs. Walter Goodman, Karolyn's parents. They got caught in the slow-down in London and arrived 7hours late, making it 23 hours from the time of boarding in London until they landedin Salisbury. We had a wonderful ten days, visiting, doing a very limited amount oftravelling, and sharing in the work. Pop Goodman spoke to the Sunday morning group in Glen Norah. We need some technical advice now, as during some early showers, some leaks appeared in the Glen Norah roof.

While they were here I went to Fort Victoria with a Kombi load of African youthfor a national youth rally. This was most enjoyable for all. It included competitions in singing, Bible drama, sword drill and quizzes. I got roped into being oneof the judges for the singing competition, and this didn't please our own Glen Norahgroup, because they felt I was so afraid of favoring them that I did exactly the opposite. Needless to say, they didn't win.

Early in September Karolyn took a group of African ladies to Gwelo for an area-wide women's convention. It was completely planned by the local women, with a bitof advice from Nila Michael, missionary wife from Bulawayo. They had great fellowship, and Dad was left to look after Tod and Amy. We really cooked up sometasty meals, but we were mighty glad for Mom to get back home. Her return wasnot uneventful. As they arrived back into the edge of Salisbury, they cut through oneof the African townships or housing areas. The car suddenly stalled. Some of thewomen got out to give it a push and noticed that smoke was pouring out of the back(a VW). A fire had ignited around the battery cables. The ladies were all tired andworried. Karolyn was thankful that the trouble occurred near a big grain storagedepot. Some of the guards and passersby ran out to help. They had difficulty in extinguishing the flames, so Karolyn ran to call the fire brigade. As she was talkingto them, the fire was put out, and the men were told not to come. Nevertheless, within ten minutes, the fire brigade with 10 white firemen, and a police van camerolling in. She felt quite embarrassed, but they told her not to mind. They wantedto check on the situation anyway.

Any and I have been working with a musical group lately. She sings with thegroup and I provide the accompaniment. We have been practicing each week, andnow are presenting the Christian musical in schools and churches in the area. It isa very enjoyable experience and good practice for me, Amy has one of the solo numbers and we have been very proud of her. In the past weeks, both Karolyn and Ihave had very important birthdays. Coupled with that fact, as we see our childrengrowing up, we realize that we aren't kids anymore. This just brings us a bit closer to the better life which has been prepared for us.

We are so grateful for the gifts which you all have sent to help with the workheiein Salisbury. Because of increased expenses (vehicle, etc. ) we haven't been able tobring down our bank over-draft, as the bank manager has wished. We have beengiven until the end of December to finish this off. As you have all helped so generously, we hesitate to ask you to help again. Please keep this matter in yourprayers

We love life here in Salisbury, Rhodesia. The opportunities are so great, andthe response is encouraging. Thank you all for making it possible for us to be hereat this critical time.

Dear Christian Friends,The end ofanother year is upon us. 1977 has come, opening many doors, pour

ing on us its good and bad, and now the doors are about to close. With very thankful hearts, we write to you all, extending our very bestwishes for a peaceful andhappy Christmas season and a truly blessed new year.

The Psalmist has said:

"I will praise the name of God with a song, and willmagnify him with thanksgiving.

This also shall please the Lord better than an ox orbullock that hath horns and hoofs.

The humble shall see this and be glad; and your heartshall live that seek God.

For the Lord heareth the poor, and despiseth not hisprisoners.

Let the heaven and earth praise him, the seas, andevery thing that moveth therein." Psalms 69:30-34

We offer our praise to our Heavenly Father each day because of His goodnessand love. But especially now at this time of the year, let each one be reminded ofGod's eternal and far-reaching love in sending His Precious Son to the earth to dieon our behalf. Without this love and sacrifice, we would have no promise of thebetter life.. Let us all praise Him for loving us.

This past year has been a very eventful one for us. I can't begin to tell you ofeverything which has come our way. We are most thankful to be alive and stillhere in Rhodesia as God's messengers. So many have left this country, either because of economic pressures, or dangers to life. Missions have had to close outin the rural areas. There are such uncertainties about the future that many havechosen to head out into the world to seek other places to live and work. We do notblame any of them at all, though some are subjected to terrible abuse when theyannounce that they are leaving. We are happy that we have still found it possibleto continue to live here in Salisbury. There is still such a great need for thepreaching ofa pure Gospel, which is clothed in warmth and love. Through this, many can see and appreciate what God has done for them.

We all have enjoyed a year of good health, uninterrupted schooling for ourchildren, and rich fellowship with precious friends here. We can only think ofourspecial friends across America, writing occasionally, and looking forward to theday when we can sit down together again and "catch up" on all that has happenedduring the past years. Speaking of children. Tod has just now finished his primaryschooling and will enter Cranborne High School inJanuary. He is 12 1/2 and Amyjust had her 15th birthday. Time really flies. Life here is good to young people.Lots of outside activities, good Christian fellowship, and rich family atmosphere. We don't have TV, so there isn't that pressure.

This year saw the visit of the Goodman grandparents, and this pleased us all.Woolworths was bombed, with the loss of several lives, though the quickly remodelled store was recently re-opened for business. Stricter security is in evidence everywhere. All packages have to be opened before you are allowed into anystore or office. Almost every day the sound of sirens heralds the finding of somesuspicious parcel left in or outside a store. Streets are cordoned off, while thebomb squads go into action. Almost always, the goods prove to be used clothes orbooks. ^We just accept that life has changed drastically. It hasn't affected thework oi the Lord, and we trust the Lord to protect us if we should be near to danger.

The war goes on each week. There is always the talk of another conference, with new terms to be considered. We don't want to sound pessimistic, but thesetalks go on and on, never seeming to bear much fruit. So many of the whites have

Page 11: Ammerman Bruce Karolyn 1977 Rhodesia

had relatives in the country either killed or injured, and this of course bringsgreat bitterness and resentment. The African people have their bitter feelings aswell, as they tell of extremely harsh actions by the security forces.

I don't want to sound gloomy. But this is just the kind of world we live in. Wecan each do our little bit to change the world, but the trend seems to be an increase of violence and evil everywhere. As we do our bit, we also must be preparing ourselves to live in this world, with its pressures, fears, and frustrations.Through all of this we are full aware that "He that is in us is greater than he thatis in the world. " When our trust is placed in the Lord we shall not be disappointed.

Our prayer for each of you is that you may know true peace in your hearts, inspite ofthe lack of peace in the world. You can surley know that peace ifyou allowthe Lordto control your hearts. And please remember us in your prayers. Weare so greatful for the many times that you have mentioned to us that you have beenremembering us in this way. The services of the church are held faithfully through the leadership of the local men. The women meet for study and discussion. The children in the primary schools crowd into the rooms for the scripture classes. The lessons for the Living Way correspondence course are still being sentout, and replies are received. Just pray that through these and other means wemay come closer to our goal of a mature church which can be left in confidencewith these people. Then if we should have to leave, we could do so without doubtor fear.

Have a good new year. We would love to hear from you.Yours in His service,

Bruce and KarolynPlease note change of address;Mr. & Mrs. Walter L. Spratt (forwarding addrtiss)Central Africa MissionP. O. Box 71
