De ar F ri en d sThis is our f ir st le t ter to you in the New Year. Let me first take this opportun

ity to thank the many of you who wrote to us at Christmas. We received many beautiful cards and let ters. Gradually we will answer each one. We also appreciatethe parcels of personal things and monetary gifts. It is certainly very touching tobe remembered in this way. It makes our years of associa t ion together even moremeaningful . If at any t ime, you have s en t some th ing to us and have not received anote of thanks, please check with us to see if it has arrived. The postal service, especially in December, was very poor. We wouldn t want you to think we had neglec ted t o acknowledge your gift.

This month has seen the beg inning of Scripture classes again in the Africanschools of Sa li sbury. We added a new school to our l ist this year . It is St. Peter s ,a Roman Catholic Secondary or High School. We feel ve ry thr il led with this opportunity to enter the school on Wednesdays and teach a large group(more than thirtyyoung people). This b ri ng s the number of schools to that we visit each week. Mylargest class has bright-faced, eager boys and girls. They respond so well toact ion choruses , Bible s tories and ques ti ons.

Sunday was a day of special joy to us in our services. Since we sti l l haven tbeen able to get the church building started, because of red tape and de la ys in thesurvey of the site, we still meet in an open area of G len Norah. There is a big anthil l on the s ide , with a la rge shade t ree But the r ain s s til l c au se t roub le at t imesSunday, however, the skies were c lea r and blue. People began a rr iv ing ear ly . Wefilled up the VW Kombi with more th an should have been a llowed . Some wait ed f orfriends to accompany them to church and arrived just as we were closing th e meeting. But near ly 70 people were present , a record for our group there Everyonewas so enthusiastic and interested. We all felt really blessed after the meeting.F rom th ere we went b ack to H atf ie ld the a r ea where we l ive and sha r ed in a monthly fellowship dinner with the European brethren. That evening was fellowship andpreaching at th e college , with the Europeans. I always play the piano for that groupin th e e veni ng s. So our Sundays are quite varied and interest ing.

Las t week we took a new evangelis t t o Hunyani , where our new congregation ismeet ing. We found a smal l room for him and i nt roduced h im to the Christ iansthere . When we were f in ished wi th our introductions, the leader stood up, as if toclose. He said that he had someth ing to say now that the new man was there. Hesaid that it wasn t good for a new resident to begin his month by going fr om p la ce toplace, borrowing money for food until p ay day came. So he said that the Chris t ians(about o r so) had collected some money to help the evangelist. It came to Rhode-sian 3.40, which was a great sacrifice fo r these people. It was a t remendous gesture of good will on their part . We are looking for a smal l house to buy, as a basefor the church. Hopefully, it will have a ra ther large living room, and the churchg ro up c an meet there for now. Then we will make appl ica tion for one of the churchsi tes which will be granted in the coming months.

The Don Mechem family from Zambia are visiting in Salisbury this week. Theycame down to visit doctors and dentists. I was happy for him to accompany me onWednesday evening to Highfield for our mid-week study and prayer t ime. As usual, the minister asked me if I thought that Don would like to speak to the group. I always feel bad for the visitor, though I understand the custom. It doesn t give yout ime to prepare , but it is done simply through respect. If someone has come from

e r F riends and Loved Ones ,Without fai th it is impossible to please Him (Hebrews 11:6). This smal lword

is a mighty important ingredient in our l ives- -especial ly as we all want to pleaseGod. Without this faith we have no hope of coming before God on the Day of Judgment, at least not in confidence and trust. These are days when-a Living Faith isessential in order to combat fear and temptation. It seems as i f everywhere in theworld that the powers of darkness are pressing in . We have no power of our ownto dispel the darkness. There is no way, except through Christ, to face each daywith hope and joy.

It is a real joy to have another opportunity of writing to each of you this month.Sometimes when we only write eve ry o th er month I forget what has happened in theweeks before. Each week has bee n fi ll ed up with activities. We are just thankfulthat we can be a par t of this important work fo r the Lord h ere in Rhodesia. Ourlives have been richly blessed over the past years because of the privilege of beinghere and sharing the Gospel with these people.

The last week of J anua ry our family journeyed t o Mashoko Mission, where Ipreached a week-end Revival meeting at the Secondary School. I also played thepiano for the services. We had a wonderful time of fellowship there. Then the 1stSunday of March we went north to Karo i to meet with the African brethren. Weused to work with these people when we lived at Chidamoyo, and a pressing invitation had come since last year to return for a good visit. Also in April I was invited to DeWure Secondary School, Gutu, for a singing session with the students there. This s choo l is led by the Doug Johnson f amily , and the Ura Grove rs . I took two African f riends from town with me, and we al l shared in the two services. We sangspecial songs, taught them new choruses, had devotions, and generally had a good:time. What a privilege to share in this way.

Coming up this month is our r egular mission meeting--this time to be held inSalisbury the 18th and 19th of April. This involves planning programs, meals, accommodation, etc. But it is nice to get together with our co-workers off and onthrough the year. School will be out the 9th of April, so all the kids will be freefor about four weeks. Their school term is quite busy, with heavy assignments andlots of activities. So they are always ready for vacation.

I suppose that you would be a bit disappointed if I didn t mention somethingabout Rhodesia in this letter. From al l the letters we have received, it is apparentthat Rhodesia has been in the forefront of the news lately. This should make usglow with all the publicity but it hasn t been that kind of news. We are naturallytouched with your concern for us. Thank you all for your letters and cards. TodayI can safely say tha t things are seemingly quiet here. The terrorist war still goeson up on the border and a lot of suffering has been caused to a lot of people. Iwish I could tell you just what the future will hold for this country, but I have noidea. I won t even attempt to discuss the rights and wrongs of this whole situation. My understanding is too limited. Please don t be over-concerned about all of ushere. We are confident that the Lord will take care of us. The work is going a-head full-steam. We haven t been hindered at all through these difficulties. Weanticipate entering new areas and beginning new programs. Just don t leave us atthis time, or don t forget to keep us in your prayersand sup po rt . We n eed you more

been completed. That is one more stage comple ted. Howeve r, we now waitforthesite plans to be sent to as before the actual building plans can be finished. Our VBS lessons are now available from Bro. Spratt , our fo rward ing agent.

These involve a lesson background, b iographica l ske tch, and pictures to colour.A lso inc lude d is a new se t of sl ides dealing with our r ecen t ac ti vi ti es in Sal isbury.Par t of the se t is especially geared to young people in VBS, but all of youwoulden-joy seeing the slides in your g roups. So, when you are having a mission meeting,or a youth gathering featuring missions, please write to Bro. Spratt and requestthe s l ide s . Ask fo r 1976 Sl ide Set .

Our schedule of Scripture classes in the African schools will stop after thisweek for the school holidays . One of my classes has grown unbel ievably . Las tweek I had 133 chi ldren in one c la ss room which normal ly holds about 40 chi ldren.These- students are so eager. They love to I'm a 'Trampin ' and If Yon're Happy and You Know It . It is a bright spot of my week when I visit the schools.

Thanks again for each let ter and kind thought. May God take care of youandfil lyou with much thankful ne s s for His goodness. You r s in His Se rv i c e

The pnpose is tocreate interest amcaig the children in another area of the worldits peopcountry animals Christian work, e t c . ANlMftL LIFE OF AFRICA.

of the most interesting features of any country is the animal l ife vdlives ttere. It is true that vhen we lived out in the bush country at Chmoyo ve saM much more animal l i fe than we do now t ha t we have to towi t is also true that the wild life which once roamed the country freis now mainly coifined to large game areas. These are not like zoos, butthere a re certain areas where people do not live and the animal are undisturbed. Sometimes the game officials have to go in and kill off somethe animals because they become too numerous.a. The most fascinating of all animals and this is a personal opiniontiie elqhant. He is ^ big and strong. He doesn t have to worry about amone else. Hhm he raises his trunk and flaps his ears as a warning toothers, he knows that all will heed his warning. As he ooves throu^ thebu ^ ccwntry, he strips bark off the trees and when he can t reach thebranch he wants, he just pushes the tree over with his head or his foot.

The most ^spealing animals are the monkeys. It just seems like you90 ^ to them and pick them up in your arms. They p l^ games, ^laseeach other, c1 into trees, and junp off the linhs onto each other. But if ytry to get vracy near to them they will scurry off into t he t hi ck et . Wte u^ monkQT, named Betsy. Ws had to keep her tigd because she wso troublescne. She wcsuld firi^tai anycme vho passed by, slip into thehouse vhm you weren t ^tching in order to steal some fruit, or acmp othsuch action. The re^tives of the roonk^s, the baboons, are not so lovabvhile an old patriarch keepswatch above the troupe. Wtte com is making ears in the fields, the baboons slip in, grabbing earshaodsand mcuth, and if not chased away, they can cocpletely ruin thfarmer s crop.c. toe of the most interesting of the animals is the giraffe. He moves svsry grdoefully. He is not easily frightened, but is just curious vhensoneone stops to have a lock usually quite unooioemed, he cxntinues topull off the tender leaves from the tofs of the trees. You must adnit thate h^ quite an advantage over the other animals. I f he should bete will of canter ah^ a short distance and thai stop again to see *hIS h^panng. His colouring and spots make him very difficult to notice.d. The most fearsome animal in the world is the lion. At least he is theaost h i ^ y req)ecad. All animals respect the power and ^ed of the lionHe the ability to cause everyone else to stop eating, begin listeningcarefully or even to become quite nervous when he is around. A rrore dangerous animal is the African buffalo, who when wounded, has killed manvgrea t huntaacs.

In America, we usually think t h a t most o f Africa i s ajungle, with wild animals moving everyvdiere. Well, this i s n t true . Thereare go^ highways connecting large industrialized cities. I t e church in Glen Norah was started several years ago, and was assistedf ixst by the Owen Dunlsps, and then by the Jerry Smiths. Both of these famil i e s l e f t before a house of worship was erected for the church. Last year1975) after 6,000.00 was detained, and proof was given to the authoritiesthat we had that much moiey to s t a r t building, we submitted our applicationfor a church site. I t wasn't until Novenber that the s i t e was granted. Fromthen until new March), we have waited for the survey to be ocnpleted. Nowthat heis been, and plans have been drawn By the time you s t u ^ thislesson, we will be building the building. With God's help, the church ocai-gregaticai) will soon have a comfortable building in vhich to meet. There axe many amall houses a l l around the s i t e vhere we are building. Tfeaxe in a b u ^ area. About 30,000 people live in this new housing area, andmore hones and apartsnmits are being b u i l t a l l the time. At the present time,we have a maiisership and attendance of fron f i f t y t o sixty people. Many ofthese are folk vdio learned about the Gospel from evangelists out in the bush.Sons are ficcm Chidamcyo, some cm Mashbko and some from Dadaya Mission.Without a doubt, vdien the building i s ooipleted, many others will be able tolocate vdtere the church i s meeting. Cas ting a ll your care upon him; for he careth for you I Peter 5:7). What awonderful promise f or t ho se who lov e the Lord. Of course this involves completet rust in Him, o r you won t feel confident to cast your cares-and concerns on Hiss hou lde r s He doe s love and c a r e fo r H is own

Today is another bright and beautiful Rhodesian day. From let ters and repor tswe have received , Amer ica has been a very hot, uncomfor tab le p lace in recentweeks. We don t envy your summer weather. But, for a ll the beauty here , ourtwo kids, Amy and Tod , are both in bed with bad sinus infections. Tod developed asecondary s taph infection and is on auatibiotics. Their school term is t o f in ish thisweek, and t hey are having to spend the t ime in bed--not that that bothers them toomuch, missing school. Of course they want to get better by th e week- end, b ec au sethere is a tr ip planned to Chidamoyo. We were all greatly blessed and enriched in June and July, through the visits o_Sherwood and Mairy Smith, and then again by Professor Don Nash. Sherwood isfrom Cincinnati Bible Seminary and spent ten days w ith us, giving lectures on thebook o f Roman s and Church History. All of us, and particularly the local churchpeople, really appreciated his sincere and thorough way of presenting his mater ia lThen Prof , Nash, of Kentucky Christ ian College, shared for three days on the bookof Ephesians. There is so much in that short book. We couldn t begin to cover itall. He also dea lt with difficult Bible verses, giving the Greek backgrounds, whichwas very helpful. We do miss the good fellowship and preaching of your Conventioin the S ta te s. But occasionally the convention-speakers come to us, so we get somof th e benefi t of such gatherings. No doubt you will want me to mention something of the sjtcurity ^itu^ion inRhodesia. It is difficult to do this, because things change quickly, and this reportmay not be up-to-date or accurate. As far as our work in Salisbury and surrounding areas is concerned, it is continuing a s befo re. In fact, the Living Way Correspondence Course is feeling a great increase of students and interest. The expressions of apprec ia t ion touch u s deep ly . Even in the African areas there seems to bean increased awareness of spiritual need. The hungering on the faces of people, and the grow ing church attendance convince us that now is a vital t ime for the church to be making a n act ive th rus t in th is a r ea of the wor ld . However , out in some oth e rural areas , it isn t so pleasant. I would not want to spe ak for some of ourmiss ion cen te r s, but some of them are in difficulty. The spread of t e r ror i sm isffect ing the movemen t o f our missionariejs, and threatening the s afe ty o f some.

The respective centers are hav ing to make adjustments in work and dwelling to prot ec t t hemselves . Your prayers a re e ar ne st ly requested for these ones. We admitthat we cannot see clearly all the rights and wrongs, or the turnings which areahead. Only God can accu rat ely see , as He looks down from above.I am sorry to say that the new church building has still not been started. Thearchitect has delayed in producing the plans, which has been a fu rthe r sou rce ofdisappointment and frustration. The church in Glen Norah had two b^t i sms on Sunday. The VW Kombi loaded up all it could hold and we went about miles to a r ivefor the service. When we re turned there was the largest crowd which we have hadfor months, s inging in preparation for the worship service. Another new servicewil l begin this Sunday at the Bible College here in Salisbury. The white Christiansmeet there every week, but there is such a large number of locally-employed Afri^cans in the area that we are starting a service fo r th em . We have t r ied to take asmany as we can carry in the Kombi, but even now we have to leave many behind.

Dear hrist ianFr iendsThe months pass by quickly, ^gain it is time to stop for a moment and renewour thanks for the Most Wonderful Gift of All--Je8us, the Son of God. And theWord was made flesh, and dwelt among us John 1:14). Through the coming ofthis Living Word we have ^een able to know and draw near unto God. We also haveJ>een permitted to be a part of a very special family.I suppose if I think of one of the finest blessings of all, it is the great opportunity we have had to share with so many people around the world. We have been privileged, more than the average person, in that we h e traveled extensively both inthe States and in other parts-of the world. Our jiye^af^Heve been so enriched by the

many people we have met. Countless homes have been opened up to us when wehave passed through various areas. Even now, s o,m an y mempries come tomind--the kind:o.86.ap;that we used in an Arkansas home, the flocks of geese overthe latefall grain fields in northwest Missouri, the dry, clear skies and the sound of traffic in Albuquerque, and the tast of delicious foods, like respberry pie in Indiana andsliced turkey and hot rolls in Nortonville, Kansas. I could go on and on.Of course, what makes each of these places very special is the people who livethere. The warm greetings and friendly conversations, as we look over thenewpigcrop together, or watch together the rising waters of the big rivers. Howenrichedour lives have been by the Christian kindness of hundreds and hundreds of God 'speople ar ound the world. W hatever the colour, or the language spoken, whetherrich or poor, we have been received in love and have shared many special momentsThank you all for a special gift which you didn t realize that you were giving to us.We love you all and are thankful that we have been privileged to meet you.Our liveshave been touched by these all-too short get-togethers.It looks as if the rains are finally coming to Africa. The season has been slowin getting settled. Much seed has died and more concern has been expressed bythefarming community. The skies are over-cast and rains have been falling for several days. It was a welcome break from the sc orching hea t of November. All -t ime

heat records were broken all over Rhodesia. Some very special news for you all On Sunday the 28th of November, the GlenNo rah congregation met together after our regular service for the ground-breakingceremony for our new building. 1 know that many of you think the building is aboutfinished, or maybe that we have been dragging our feet. 1 a ssure you that this isnl

the case. We have sweat, prayed, and wrangled with city authorities. It finallylooks like we are going to be able to go ahead. It has been such a long time, wecanhardly believe tnat work is about to begin.Such a s ervice was new to almost everyone in the group. Prayers were said, and a short talk was given, stressing the need for us to do this important work according to truth, unity, personal dedication and love. Lastly the youth choir sangfor us all An interesting closing feature was the planting of a small tree by theminister, Mr. Nyekete This was a itruiy African traditional act, signifying theblessing of God Such an act is often done at weddings, as well. If the tree grows,it is a special sign that God is adding His blessings to the home or the project. We were all phocked by the death of three Catholic missionaries in the north

We are so thankful for your faithful witness. May Godr ichly b le ss you, our dear friends. I loved this message which came on a recentChristmas letter from Indiana. It is a great motto for us all in the coming year. will not follow where the path may lead, but I will go where there is no path andI will leave a t r a i l . Yours in His Service,
