ALTHOUGH , THOUGH AND EVEN THOUGH

These expressions are adverbs

After although we use:

S + V

Although = formal speechThough = informal speechEven though= emphasis, expectations

These expressions are used to make contrast

Examples:

Although it reained a lot, we enjoyed our holidayI did not get the job although I had the necessary qualifications.

Sometimes we use though instead of although:

I did not get the job though I had the necessary qualifications.

We often use though at the end of a sentence.

The house is not very nice. I like the garden though.

(= but I like the garden )

Even though is a stronger form of altough, example:

1. Even though I was really tired, I could not sleep.

Examples:

1.

Although the exam was difficult, I think I did well.

I think I did well though the exam was difficult.

The exam was difficult, I think I did well though.

Even though , the exam as very easy, I failed.

IN SPITE OF AND DESPITE

They are prepositions

They have the same meaning

After in spite of or despite, we use:

a Noun a pronoun or gerund of the verb (-ing)

Examples:

Using a noun

In spite of the rain, we enjoyed our holiday

2. Using ing

I did not get the job in spite of having the necessary qualifications.

3. Using a pronoun:

She was not well, but in spite of this she went to work.

Example using despite:

She was not well, but despite this she went to work.

Examples:

Despite his best efforts, the man just could not secceed.

In spite of his best efforts the man just could not succeed.

Despite being on time to the lecture, we were not admitted.

Use in spite of, despite or although for these sentences:
