18th March, 2018 - Year B FIFTH SUNDAY OF LENT Dear Parishioners, 1. Glory, Glory, Hallelujah! In the Gospel, some Greeks ask to see Jesus. Jesus responds by saying that anyone who loves his life will lose it; to gain your life, you have to be like a grain of wheat which brings forth much fruit only by falling into the earth and dying. The Greeks must have been baffled. What has this speech of Jesus’ got to do with their request to see him? But consider those Greeks. They accord Jesus rock star status. They don’t even ask to talk to the great man. They want only to see him. And they don’t dare come to Jesus directly. They just approach one of his friends, Philip, and they call Philip “Sir”“Kyrie.” Even Lady Gaga’s groupies wouldn’t call one of her friends, “Lord,” would they? Jesus’ response helps those Greeks to see himthe true Lord, not the rock star the Greeks were looking for. The true Lord did not come to get status and power. He came to lose his life, to fall and die, like a grain of wheat. The point is made emphatically at the end of Jesus’ response to the Greeks. He ends with a prayer: “Father,” he prays, “glorify your name.” Jesus, the true Lordand not the rock starcame to seek God’s glo- ry. He did not come to seek his own. The final part of this lesson for the Greeks, and for us, comes in God’s response to Jesus’ prayer. God honors Jesus by answering his prayer out loud: “I have glorified My name, and I will glorify it again!” “This voice didn’t come for my sake, but for yours,” Jesus tells the awed bystanders. God’s voice came to finish the lesson: True glory lies not in rock star status, then, but, on the contrary, in be- ing willing to fall and die like a grain of wheat. It lies in being willing to let go, to lose one’s life in this world in love for the glory of God’s name. And so the Greeks do get what they asked for. In the response of Je- sus to them, they, and we, see the true Lord, and with the true Lord the pattern for going for glory in our lives, too. Glory, glory, hallelujah! 2. Message from Fr Greg Dear Parishioners, I would like to let you know I will be taking up a new appointment at Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Parish, Sefton. At this stage the appointment begins at the end of April. Thank you very much for the friendship and support over the past 4 and 1/2 years. Dear Parishioners, 1. Glory, Glory, Hallelujah! In the Gospel, some Greeks ask to see Jesus. Jesus responds by saying that anyone who loves his life will lose it; to gain your life, you have to be like a grain of wheat which brings forth much fruit only by falling into the earth and dying. They don’t even ask to talk to the great man. They want only to see him. And they don’t dare come to Jesus directly. They just approach one of his friends, Philip, and they call Philip “Sir”—“Kyrie.” Even Lady Gaga’s groupies wouldn’t call one of her friends, “Lord,” would they? Jesus’ response helps those Greeks to see him—the true Lord, not the rock star the Greeks were looking for. The true Lord did not come to get status and power. POPE’S COLUMN

‘The Our Father Is the Best Preparation to Receive Jesus,’ Says Pope At General Audience, Francis Reminds That in Opening Ourselves to God’s Forgiveness, We Dispose Ourselves to Live Fraternal Love

The “Our Father” is the prayer for the children of God, Pope Francis reminds, noting: “It’s the best way to prepare ourselves to receive Jesus in Communion.” The General Audience was held in St. Peter’s Square, on March 14, 2018, the day after the fifth anniversary of Francis’ pontificate. During his catechesis on Wednesday morning, he spoke of the Mass’ Communion Rites and, specifically, of the “Our Father” prayer. The Holy Father pointed out that, in this prayer to the Lord, we ask Him for “our daily bread,” with particular reference to the “Eucharistic Bread that we need to live as children of God,” and we implore Him to “forgive us our trespasses, and we commit ourselves, at the same time, to

forgive those who have trespassed against us.” “Thus, opening ourselves to God’s forgiveness, we dispose ourselves to live fraternal love,” continued the Pontiff. “Finally, we ask Him to deliver us from evil, which separates us from Him and divides us from our brothers.” Expressed with the rite of peace, is our union and mutual love before approaching the Sacrament, clarified the Pope. The breaking of the Bread, which takes place after the praying of the “Our Father,” is “the gesture that Jesus car-ried out in the Last Supper, which enabled the disciples to recognize Him after the Resurrection, as in Emmaus, explained His Holiness. The breaking of the Bread is accompanied by the invocation of the “Lamb of God,” which is the biblical image used by John the Baptist to identify Jesus as “He who takes away the sin of the world.” Pope Francis concluding, inviting those gathered to ask Mary, in this Lenten journey, “to not fail to look at us with love so that, with the help of the Holy Spirit, she makes fruitful our resolutions for greater dedication and generosity in our Christian life.”
