Dear Parishioners, 1. Death When someone we know is diagnosed with serious sickness, we are shocked; and so is the sick person, as we all take in the possibility that he might die. There is something perplexing about this reaction, isn’t there? None of us is getting out of this life alive. And it is foolishness to think that we do not know the time of our death. It is sometime between now and the time when you would be 110 years old. (Who lives past 110?) So death is inevitable, and we know at least roughly when it will come. The closer you get to 110, the closer it is—though, of course, we also know that you could get hit by a bus today. Rats!, you might think, this is a truly depressing thought. Why call it to our attention? It is better to be shocked and surprised when it comes. But listen to the Second Reading. What does it say? When death comes, this is what it brings: Our Lord himself comes to encourage you to weep over all the hardship of your past life, and then he himself wipes those tears away from your eyes. And there is not only a new heaven, but also a new earth. What do you expect from earth? Well, earth isn’t disembodied. Earth is earth – dirt, plants, animals, the whole thing that God created when he created earth, as Genesis explains it to us. Only this time there will be no pain and suffering. So there may be great sea beasts, as Genesis says (Gen.1:21), but they won’t hurt anything; and neither will any of the other animals. If you want to play with lions, what’s to stop you? In fact, even humans won’t hurt anything, in that great and wonderful time. Now that is a thought hard to take in, isn’t it? But, in that new earth, you can be yourself, open, vulnerable, and still totally safe and at ease, because the people around you won’t hurt anything— not you either. And all of this is wrapped up in the tender love of the Lord. He himself will welcome you to this new world and to himself by telling you, “Come away, beloved. The winter is past; the flowers appear on the earth!” (Song of Songs 2:10-12) That joy begins on the other side of death. What is there to fear about this? 2. Please go on line to https://www.service.nsw.gov.au/transaction/apply-working-children-check or pop into the parish office for help. 3. Church works Now that community day has past we will be turning our attention to the renewal of our Church. Last week we patched the carpet at the entrance way to the west door. This is a temporary measure until further works are completed in the interior of the church. Our hope is that in the coming few months we will be able to paint the interior and exterior of the church and repair woodwork that needs attention. This is now possible as we have recently renewed and replaced all the lighting in the church. Presently we are still repairing and reviewing both the church roof and interior ceiling to see if they remain water proof. Please excuse any interruptions that these works may cause but it is all part of our plan to renew the physical beauty of our parish. 4. Confirmation We welcome the 80 candidates who will celebrate the Sacrament of Confirmation this Sunday over 2 sessions, with Bishop Terry Brady. Please keep our candidates in your prayers. 5. Mary Help of Christians. Next Friday, 24th May the school children will join us at the 9am Mass, as we celebrate Our Lady, Help of Christians, our Patron Saint. Please make Fr Julian feel welcomed as he celebrates Masses on Sunday. God Bless Fr Matthew.

Our Church, disfigured by the sexual abuse

scandal, is suffering and we, her members must all play a part in renewing, strengthening and recovering what has been lost, for the sake of our own faith and that of generations to come. Haven't got the time, I hear you say - this will be the best investment of time you can make because the stakes have never been higher -

the Church needs you to help it be the beacon of light in our dark world.

"Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it. If one part suffers, every part suffers with it; if one part is honoured, every part rejoices with it." 1 Corinthians 12:26-27

POPE’S COLUMN

Pope Francis on St. Paul: Hard-Headed but not Hard-Hearted ‘As soon as he heard the voice of the Lord, he became like a child, letting himself be led.’ Pope Francis focused St. Paul in his May 10, 2019, homily at Mass in Casa Santa Marta in the Vatican. Reflecting on St. Paul’s character, Pope Francis called him “a forceful man” who was “enamored with the purity of the law”, saying he was “honest” and “consistent”, though he had “a difficult character”. “First of all, he was consistent, because he was a man open to God. If he persecuted Chris-tians, it was because he was convinced that God desired it. But how can that be? Never mind how: he was convinced of it. This is the zeal he carried for the purity of the house of God, for the glory of God. A heart open to the voice of the Lord. And he risked all and charged ahead. Another characteristic of his actions is that he was a docile man – full of docility – and was not hard-headed.” Pope Francis pointed out that, even though he was stubborn, St. Paul was not hard-hearted. He was “open to God’s indications”. He had incarcerated and killed Christians “with a fire inside him”, but “as soon as he heard the voice of the Lord, he became like a child, letting himself be led.” “All his convictions stayed silent, waiting for the voice of the Lord: ‘What must I do, Lord?’ And he went to that encounter at Damascus, to meet that other docile man, and let himself be catechized like a child and be baptized like a child. Then he regains his strength, and what does he do? He is silent. He leaves for Arabia to pray, for how long we don’t know. Maybe years, we don’t know. Docility. Openness to the voice of God and docility. His is an example for our life.” The Pope said there are numerous courageous men and women today who risk their lives to find new paths for the Church. “Let us seek new paths; it will do us all good. As long as they are the paths of the Lord. But charge forward in the depth of prayer, of docility and a heart open to God. This is how true change takes place in the Church, with people who know how to fight in the great and in the small.” The Christian, Pope Francis concluded, must have the charism of the great and of the small. And he prayed “for the grace to be docile to the voice of the Lord and for a heart open to the Lord; for the grace not to be afraid to do great things and the sensitivity to pay attention to the small things.”
