The Bridge nameplate has been recreated to visually represent the unique gifts and talents shared by our students, alumni, parents, faculty and staff—the many parts that merge into the one community that is St. Patrick-St. Vincent Catholic High School.
Welcome to St. Patrick-St. Vincent Catholic High School!
In 2014 when I assumed my position as the first President of St. Patrick-St. Vincent Catholic High School I came humbly
under the appointment of the Bishop of the Diocese of Sacramento, Jaime Soto. Within my first year as President of SPSV,
I was asked to introduce a new leadership model to the school as a response to the growing complexity of leading Catholic
high schools in the diocese. While many Catholic schools over the past 25 years have adopted this model of leadership,
this change was proposed to redistribute responsibilities between the chief administrators, president and principal, to
provide more reasonable and sustainable leadership positions to better support the SPSV community.
These last few years much of my time has been focused on working with the diocese to appoint a Board of Trustees
whom I report to. As the sole employee of the Trustees, I work in collaboration with and provide direction for key school
leadership and others in designated positions at SPSV.
This spring and summer, I led SPSV through a strategic planning process that establishes a five-year vision that will
guide the school forward, focused on goals for success in the future. As President it is clear that I need to spend more
time on board, financial, legal, and strategic matters. In the last year there has been more focused work of the school’s
Advancement Office, and the scope of those activities also necessitates more of my time from the daily operation of
the school. While the Principal’s position, too, has become more complex, much more time is demanded for addressing
academic and operational matters as they pertain to the campus.
This change in administrative model is a change for students, parents, faculty and staff, and alumni—a change to better
the SPSV community. It is here that I pause and am mindful that “There is an appointed time for everything, and a time for
every affair under the heavens.” (Ecclesiastes 3:1)
We welcome you. We hope you will take a few minutes to see some of the exciting changes happening at St. Patrick-St.
Vincent Catholic High School.
M E S S A G E F R O MTHE PRESIDENT

Throughout my whole life I’ve been volunteering. Whether it was willingly or under duress, volunteering has helped shape me as a person. I wasn’t always this aware. I came to this realization on the Junior Focus Day, a volunteering trip to St. Anthony’s in San Francisco.
VOLUNTEERINGSt. Anthony’s is a non-profit organization that has worked in the Tenderloin district of
San Francisco for many years. St. Anthony’s provides hot meals and shelter to those who are struggling to get back on their feet. St. Anthony’s also houses a rehabilitation center for those who are struggling with substance abuse and a clothing store where the needy can acquire clothing for free.
When my class went to St. Anthony’s, I found myself flying around the dining hall cleaning tables and striking up conversations with everyone who was willing to talk. Some told me stories of their past and the “good old days” while others wanted to know more about me and what I do. When I told them I was an actor, several would joke around with me saying they wanted my autograph or would remember my name for when I got big. These encounters left an impression on me simply because they were normal

conversations. These people we see on the streets everyday are regular people just like you and me. Just because they have less than me doesn’t mean they are less than human.
By volunteering I realized that even the littlest action makes a difference. Of all the encounters I had in the dining hall that day the one that stands out most is one that I had with a woman who wasn’t much older than me. While I was cleaning tables, she tapped me on the shoulder and asked me if I could get her a big red apple like the man at her table had. I kindly obliged and brought back the biggest reddest apple I could find and the smile that lit up across her once melancholy face was one I’ll never forget. The smallest gesture I had made all day made her day and—who knows—maybe her whole week.
Volunteerism isn’t about how much you give or how much you’re involved in something. Volunteerism is something we all have an opportunity to take part in everyday. Whether
it is helping a friend or someone in need, we are all volunteers. By doing something without a second thought you are a volunteer. So don’t think twice to cover for a buddy when it comes to the bill, or to donate that extra change to the man outside of Safeway. We never know what the other is going through and even the smallest act can change their mood for the better.
“These encounters left an impression on me simply because they were normal conversations. These people we see on the streets everyday are regular people, just like you and me. Just because they have less than me doesn’t mean they are less than human.”

Effortlessly playing a Mozart sonata, sinking a 3-pointer, conversing in Spanish, winning a chili cook-off all require regular practice in order to advance or “perfect” the skills. Reading and writing are no different. Comprehending subtleties, following logical arguments, articulating themes and honing communication skills that inspire, clarify and challenge an audience takes work.
PRACTICEPRACTICEPRACTICE MAKES PERFECT
As a community of educators, the SPSV faculty is dedicated to developing curriculum and programs that advance students’ academic skills and deepen their understanding of global events. This year, faculty began the first year of a three-year professional development program Writing Across the Curriculum with the commitment to having three goals in mind: to develop students into excellent writers, to align writing standards across all academic departments, and to strengthen the collaborative spirit among the faculty to address academic issues. The foundation of our efforts is the 6-traits writing program. The SPSV English department
adopted this program many years ago and believes that it truly helps students to be strong writers. The program promotes the belief that all writing, professional and personal, integrates the same six writing traits, ideas, organization, voice, word choice, sentence fluency, and conventions. Since all writing manipulates these traits to produce various products (sentences, essays, posters, emails, brochures), all teachers have the responsibility to help students improve their writing skills.
The reality that we are all writing teachers can be intimidating and scary...even to English teachers. A personal goal is to reduce the level of anxiety for both students and teachers. Writing expectations need to fit the academic discipline. For instance, since word problems are a staple of the mathematics curriculum, math teachers have the opportunity to work with students on building strong sentences. Kennie Peterson, Algebra 1 teacher, states, “I love that students are writing word problems, however, they don’t share my enthusiasm. I encourage them to have fun with it, be creative. The hope is that as they become more comfortable with writing their own word problems, they will also feel less anxious when figuring out word problems on a test.” Having math teachers work with students on sentences is a gift to all

The Visual and Performing Arts (VAPA) program continues to thrive at St. Patrick-St. Vincent Catholic High School as the Arts are an integral part of an SPSV education. Thanks to diverse course offerings, dedicated and talented faculty, and a supportive administration, our programs have seen spectacular re-birth in the last two years.
With four new arts courses—Instrumental Music and Ceramics classes—added to the curriculum, SPSV has seen increased student enrollment in arts courses. Beginning with the Class of 2020, every student, is required to complete 20 credits to graduate. This art curriculum expansion has made a tremendous impact on our students, building their confidence, resulting in a record turnouts for auditions, and increasing attendance at performances. More than 82 students participated in one or more of our vocal groups this past year, singing at school masses, prayer services, and numerous concerts throughout the year.
We are extremely excited to have Mr. Ian Cochran in his second year as Instrumental Music faculty and to welcome Mrs. Erika Pazmandi Hagen as Ceramics faculty. Both will continue to contribute their expertise to the VAPA program as it continues to flourish and grow.

teachers, especially those who teach subjects in the humanities. Since paragraphs and essays are built with sentences, the more skilled students are with sentence constructions, the more skilled students will be with paragraph and essay constructions.
In addition to working with students on the 6-traits in their writing, teachers are also learning how to construct assessment rubrics based on the 6-traits program. Rubrics need to delineate performance levels for each writing trait in the assignment. For instance, a student should know from the rubric what defines a superior performance for ideas in a piece of writing; in addition, a teacher should be able to clearly defend an assessment if the rubric is well crafted. As students and teachers become familiar and comfortable with the language of 6-traits assessments, the whole school community becomes more unified in its understanding of what constitutes strong writing.
For some teachers, writing across the curriculum this year is a reboot for a professional development program the faculty did about six years ago. Sue McNeece, chemistry teacher, shares, “I’m so glad we are returning to 6-traits and to the text Writers Inc as the foundation for writing instruction at SPSV.” Since many new teachers have joined the SPSV faculty in the last six years, some teachers are not familiar with the program. It is a blessing to have both teachers who are familiar and teachers who are not because each plays an important role in the professional learning community that we are trying to strengthen at SPSV. Veteran teachers have the opportunity to mentor less experienced teachers, which then deepens their own understanding of the traits and the writing process. New teachers can also mentor veteran teachers in how to adapt some of our practices with current pedagogy. As a faculty, we become more interdependent as a professional community.
I have been practicing the art of teaching English for almost 30 years. I can confidently say that I am a much better teacher now than I was in the 1990’s. Practice, perseverance, and a positive attitude are essential traits for all superstars, as well as a humble English teacher.

Everything we do is marked by the passing of time. Seconds lead to minutes to hours to days to weeks to years to decades to centuries. Each of us experiences time passing at a precipitous crawl and other moments speeding by before you can fully savor the moment.
Where did all the years go? We graduate from high school. The kids have grown and gone. We retire from our career. Did I miss out on my chance to make a difference?
The Greek language has two words that mean “time.” The first is most familiar: chronos. It means the chronology of days, governed by the carefully calculated earth’s rotation around the sun. In the New Testament, God himself ordained this
measurement of days on the fourth day of Creation, spinning the heavenly lights “for seasons, and for days and years.”
But another word for time is also used in the New Testament: kairos. This speaks more to specific, God-ordained times throughout history, sometimes called the “right time” or “appointed season.” Kairos is God’s dimension—one not marked by the past, the present, or the future.
Last year, St. Patrick-St. Vincent Catholic High School introduced a new retreat, Kairos, that has proved to be a life changing experience for seniors. Kairos is a close adaptation of the National Cursillo Program that began in 1965 and has been adopted throughout the United States for teenagers.

The Kairos program at St. Patrick-St. Vincent Catholic High School is a three-day retreat held at Catholic Charities CYO Occidental for thirty students led by a team composed of seven students or recent alumni leaders and seven faculty and staff members. The major themes of the retreat are: knowing myself, finding out who Jesus is for me, recognizing what Jesus’ call to me is, living the message of Christ.
The retreat establishes trust between students. Students speak of their difficulties, joys and hopes in ways new and rewarding to them. Prayer and the sacraments are an essential part of the retreat as well as the students’ involvement in discussions and various spiritual activities during the retreat. This retreat has had a tremendous impact on the lives of students participating in the program.
The purpose of Kairos allows students to see the value of their Christian faith lived and experienced in community; with the support of that community, one can more easily look within themselves and find their true worth as a person and their relationship with God and others.
Kairos moments then—and now—allow each of us to get a glimpse of God in all things. It is a goal to have Kairos participants come back as alumni group leaders for this retreat
in future years. Additionally, the Director of Campus Ministry, Kay Dinglasan, would like to increase the number of retreats to three times a year. The next Kairos retreat will be held in March 2018.

On a frigid December evening in a tiny Central Valley farm town, more than 2,800 fans packed the football stadium to cheer the Strathmore High School Spartans against the St. Patrick-St. Vincent Bruins. In a thriller of a finish, with six seconds on the clock, SPSV’s Gabe Fuentes kicked a 19-yard field goal to lift the Bruins over Strathmore, 29-28. For the first time in school history, SPSV won the CIF State Division 6-A football championship in 2016.
“Everyone was counting on me,” Fuentes said. “It was one of those moments you only get once in a lifetime, and I made the most of it. A lot was going through my mind—what if I missed, what if I made it. Flowing through my mind the most was being successful, because negative thoughts stray you away from the success that’s right in front of you. So right after I kicked it I had a positive thought and when it went in, I knew I ended it with a great moment.”
Following that historic season, the 2017 SPSV football team won the North Coast Section title for the second year in a row.
In March 2017, the St. Patrick-St. Vincent Bruins met Helix High School of La Mesa at center court in the state-of-the-art Golden 1 Arena in Sacramento. While the Bruins struggled with second-quarter shooting woes, the team returned to the court in the second half ready to dominate. With a tremendous run in the third quarter, the Bruins positioned themselves as the first basketball team in school history to win the CIF State Division 4 championship title.
“We went through a lot this season and we could have easily been broken, but I have a tough group of kids and they persevered through some good and some bad,” said coach Derek Walker, who now has 200 wins in his coaching career. “I was most proud that they stayed together, fought together, won together, lost together... They just had a moment they’ll never forget the rest of their lives.”
The Bruins became the only team in California to win state championships in both football and basketball last season.

Employee and Workplace Giving ProgramsIf you work for a company, organization or the federal government, chances are you’ve had the opportunity to participate in an employee or workplace giving program. Employee and workplace giving is an easy and efficient way to make tax-deductible donations to St. Patrick-St. Vincent Catholic High School, typically with donations taken directly out of your paycheck.
Benefits of Employee andWorkplace Giving Programs
Convenient Tax Benefits.Automatic payroll deductions are convenient and you still get the tax benefits of charitable giving.
Financially More Manageable.By having a smaller amount of money deducted from your paycheck throughout the year, you can donate a larger amount of money and have a greater impact overall. For example, if you get paid biweekly (26 times throughout the year) and you pledge $38.50 of each paycheck to SPSV, by the end of the year you will have donated $1,000 to the school!
Matching Gifts. Some employers offer to match your contributions up to a certain amount, leveraging your company’s philanthropic support and maximizing your gift to SPSV.
Cost-efficient and Sustainable Fundraising. Workplace giving is a more cost-effective and efficient way for organizations like SPSV to raise funds, compared to other fundraising methods. The cost of giving through your employer is far below the cost that SPSV would incur in a campaign to try to raise the same amount of money. Your donation enables SPSV to spend its time and resources on more focused fundraising efforts that have a greater impact.
Show Your Support for #SPSVFundCelebrate #SPSVFund and help us reach our goal of $95,000. Any size gift will make a difference on campus and in the lives of current students Rally your friends and family to make 2018 the best year ever for SPSV.
How Your Donation HelpsAthletics? Academic Departments? Campus Ministry? Scholarships? So much more!
How To ParticipateStep 1. Choose a donation amount. Step 2. Make an online donation or complete a donation envelope.Step 3. Select the program you want to support.
