Though BorderCollies are the masters ofthe sport, Benah wasn’tsure she was ready forthat breed’s “endless en-

ergy.” So they beganlooking for an Australianshepherd or a mix andstarted submitting appli-

cations to various organ-izations.

New Spirit 4Aussie Rescue in Col-legeville, Pa., approved

them as adopters, butunfortunately, the dogsthey’d been interested inthere had already been

adopted. No problem. “The amazing

crew of people knew ofanother dog in one oftheir foster homes,”Benah says. “It was oursweet Nina.”

Benah and hermom were a little ap-prehensive at firstabout Nina becauseshe was a Border Col-lie/Australian Shepherdmix. “We were worriedshe might be ‘toomuch’,” Benah says.

But after talking with thefoster mom, they decidedto take a chance.

“We are Nina’sfourth home. It took her a

long time to settle in com-pletely but we loved herand … her intelligencewas obvious. We havefallen in love with the bor-der collie in her and arenow full-fledged bordercollie fans,” Benah says.She has taught Nina lotsof tricks, and her first trial

in agility is coming upsoon.

The teen’s inter-est in animals goes be-yond just dogs andagility. She started awebsite, steppingup-foranimals.org, to spreadawareness about factoryfarming and the joys of a

c r u e l t y -free lifestyle. She hopesto begin working in ani-mal welfare when shegraduates.

Nina may beBenah’s new best friend,but all animals have abest friend in Benah.

California AvocadoCucumber Cups

Serves: 21 English cucumber½ ripe, fresh Californiaavocado, halved,seeded, peeled anddiced¼ cup diced red bell pep-per1 Tbsp. lime juice1 Tbsp. diced cilantro½ tsp. cumin¼ tsp. salt

Instructions1. Chop off ends

of cucumber and discard.Cut cucumber into 12equal-sized round slices(approximately 1” widthslices). Using a melonballer, scoop out centerof cucumber slices, leav-ing enough cucumber onthe bottom for the base.Set aside.

2. In a mixingbowl, mash avocado andadd bell pepper, limejuice, cilantro, cumin andsalt. Stir to combine.

3. Place avo-cado mixture in a small,sandwich-sized plasticbag. Snip off one bottomcorner of bag andsqueeze avocado mix-ture into hollowed-out cu-cumber slices.
