Message to the people... The past few days have been very exciting. I have talked to numerous people who have already voted in the general election. In Texas, early voting began on October 22 and folks are taking advantage of the opportunity. One friend called on the first day of early voting to let me know that she stood in line for a little over an hour, to cast her vote. The joy in her voice was contagious as she went on to talk about the long line and how folks patiently waited their turn. Then once her time came, it was quick and uncomplicated. Not only did she cast her vote for the President of the United States and the rest of the candidates of her choice. She also took time to review the propositions and make those all-important decisions. Practically everyone I talk to asks me if I voted yet? I don’t get offended. After all, some don’t know that I don’t miss any elections. I’m just glad that the spirit of activism is alive and well in so many. Like my adult cousin, who is not “smarter than a fifth grader.” He was grinning from ear-to-ear as he asked me if I had voted yet. He asked, “What you waiting for? All I could do was look at him and laugh. I have already heard all of his arguments and commentary about the debates so I knew who he had cast his vote for. The excitement I am hearing bodes well on a number of fronts. The disheartening numbers reported from Dallas County after the primary election were not only embarrassing, but disgusting. Rev. Al Sharpton, during a visit to the Metroplex, blasted those numbers as he talked about the efforts across the country to suppress the vote and disenfranchise voters. He encouraged voters to remember the sacrifices others made for us today. I received the following email and I am sure millions received it. Hopefully they will do as I will, and go straight to the polls:

Cheryl --

This afternoon, I'm casting my ballot in my hometown of Chicago. I'm told I'll be the first sitting president to take advantage of early voting.

And I can't wait.

I know I can count on your vote. Now, it's on all of us to make sure our friends and family step up. Reach out to folks you know in important early vote states.

Look, this race is extremely tight. It's going to come down to which side can more effectively turn out the vote in these final days, and early vote is a huge part of that.

Whether people get out to vote this year, in this election, is even more critical than the last time around.

So this is serious, and I'm going to need your help if we want to win.

Connect with your friends and urge them to vote early:

Thanks,

Barack

P.S. -- Not on Facebook? Don't let that stop you from getting the word out. Ask your friends and family to get the information they need at vote.barackobama.com.

By HON. MARC MORIALPresident, National Urban League

A blatant attack on fairness, racial justice and the rule of law that began more than 20 years ago in my home state of Louisiana was finally defeated on October 16th when the Louisiana Supreme

Court ruled that State Supreme Court Justice Bernette Johnson was next in line to become the Court’s next Chief Justice. The ruling clears the way for Justice Johnson to become the

State’s first African American Chief Justice and ends a fight that should have never started. Louisiana’s constitution clearly states

that "The judge oldest in point of service on the supreme court shall be Chief Justice." But, despite the fact that Justice Johnson has served on the Louisiana Supreme Court longer than any remaining Justice, an attempt was made by some members of the Court to negate that fact and appoint instead a Justice who is junior to Justice Johnson and has less service on the court. Although Justice Johnson has served on the Court since 1994, her opponents claim that for part of that time she was not a full-fledged associate justice since she came to the Court as the result of a successful lawsuit in 1992 – in which I was the chief plaintiff -- that finally made it possible for an African American to win election to the Louisiana Supreme Court. The Constitution and the Court supported Justice Johnson’s position essentially concluding that her opponents were arguing a difference without a distinction. Regardless of how she came to the Court, Bernette Johnson had a clear and undeniable right to become the next Chief Justice. We were disappointed that this dispute ever had to occur. Not only was there a racially tinged attack against Justice Johnson, there was a clear attempt by some to roll back historic civil rights gains, including the Voting Rights Act. As one who has stood with Justice Johnson as a lawyer, Louisiana State legislator, New Orleans Mayor, and Urban League President, I am especially pleased that the matter has finally been resolved in accordance with federal law. I have always maintained that Justice Johnson’s status has never been in question and that any attempt to deny her was an ill-advised attempt to undermine both the consent decree which created her seat and the Voting Rights Act. Justice Johnson’s excellence and competence have also never been in question. A graduate of Spelman College and LSU Law School, she is highly respected jurist. Her numerous awards include the Louisiana Bar Association 2009 Distinguished Jurist Award and the 2000 Medal of Honor which I was honored to present to her during my last term as New Orleans Mayor. Throughout her life, Justice Johnson has strongly upheld the values of social justice and civil rights. She was the recipient of the National Urban League “President’s Award” at this year’s Whitney M. Young Awards gala. It is my hope that now that Justice Johnson’s right to take her place as Chief Justice has been affirmed, the Court can move forward in a spirit of cooperation and unity to put an end to the divisions of the past and help build a future for Louisiana that is worthy of its people

After President Obama expressed his personal support for same-sex marriage, there has been a robust discussion among African-Americans about whether his stance will make Black voters less likely to support him in November.

A poll conducted by The Pew Research Center For the People & The Press found that 68 percent of African-Americans said Obama’s announcement did not change their view of him. Of those who did alter their perception of the president, 16 percent said his decision caused them to view him more favorably and 13 percent less favorably.

As the debate over gay marriage seemed to be receding from the public stage, the NAACP gave the issue new life Saturday when its board passed a resolution in support of what it artfully calls marriage equality. After adopting the resolution over the weekend, Board Chair Roslyn M. Brock, President and CEO Benjamin Todd Jealous, and board member Donald L. Cash held a press conference in Baltimore to announce what they had already announced.

Even some supporters of same-sex marriage question why the NAACP is spending so much capital on this issue, considering all of the problems plaguing the Black community. The NAACP’s latest announcement comes less than two weeks after the organization announced that it has initiated a national voter registration drive to help overcome recently-erected barriers designed to dilute the Black vote.

Of course, that’s not the only problem facing African-Americans.

As the National Urban League observed in its 2012 State of Black America report: “Our analysis of data from the U.S. Census Bureau and the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics will clearly establish that whether one looks at education, income or any other meaningful measure, almost all the economic gains that blacks have made in the last 30 years have been lost in the Great Recession that started in December 2007 and in the anemic recovery that has followed since June, 2009.”

And there is also the issue of HIV/AIDS. According to Centers for Disease Control data analyzed by the Kaiser Family Foundation, African-American women accounted for 64 percent of all new AIDS diagnoses among women in 2010 and 85 percent of the Black women were infected through heterosexual activity.

There is a similar disparity among teens. Although B l a c k t e e n s represent only 17 percent of those aged 13-19 in the United States, they accounted for 70 percent of n e w A I D S d i a g n o s e s among teens in 2012.Undoub ted ly,

the debate will continue over how the NAACP should spend its limited resources and whether President Obama should have weighed in on what is essentially a state matter. However, some supporters of same-sex marriage are making the mistake of minimizing the views of many who believe that a marriage should be a union between a man and a woman.

This may be more of a religious issue than a racial one.

A poll conducted by the Pew Forum on Religion & Public Life found: “More than half of African Americans (53%) report attending religious services at least once a week, more than three-in-four (76%) say they pray on at least a daily basis and nearly nine-in-ten (88%) indicate they are absolutely certain that God exists. On each of these measures, African-

Americans stand out as the most religiously committed racial or ethnic group in the nation.”

Regardless of where one comes down on the issue, it is the height of political naiveté to expect that we will ever find any politician with whom we can agree on every issue. And the nation’s first Black president is no exception.

Opponents of same-sex marriage are quick to quote Leviticus 18:22, which states: “Thou shalt not lie with mankind, as with womankind: it is an abomination (KJV).”

If we are going to apply a single-issue test to President Obama, Mitt Romney should not be given a pass.

T h e B i b l e a l s o s a y s i n Deuteronomy 15:7, “If there be among you a poor man of one of thy brethren within any of thy gates in thy land which the LORD thy God giveth thee, thou shall not harden thine heart, nor shut thine hand from thy poor brother (KJV).”

And what does Romney say about the poor?

“I’m in this race because I care about Americans. I’m not concerned about the very poor. We have a safety net there. If it needs repair, I’ll fix it,” he said in an interview with CNN. “ I’m not concerned about the very rich; they’re doing just fine. I’m concerned about the very heart of America, the 90 percent, 95 percent of Americans who right now are struggling.”

Romney’s support of Republican proposals in Congress designed to gut the safety net is further proof that he is not concerned about the very poor.

If some African-Americans, albeit a s m a l l n u m b e r, a r e s e r i o u s l y considering voting against President Obama solely because they do not agree with his views on same-sex marriage, they should apply a litmus test to Mitt Romney and vote against him because he’s not concerned about the very poor.

The AFRO Endorses Barack Obama for

President of the United States

ent Barack Obama is running for a second term on the strength of his health care reform, his foreign policy initiatives, job creation, the auto industry bailout, banking industry reform and passage of the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act of 2009. Among many African Americans, his healthcare reform was the signature accomplishment of his administration—providing care at a lower cost; allowing children to remain covered on their parents’ insurance plans up to the age of 26; and covering people with preexisting conditions. On foreign policy, Obama gets high points for withdrawing U.S. troops from Iraq, setting a timetable for the troop drawdown in Afghanistan and for tracking down and killing the elusive coward and Sept. 11 mastermind, Osama bin Laden.Obama says he needs another term to fulfill the promises of his first campaign. He says his efforts to elicit change were crippled by the blinding debt and other problems he inherited from George W. Bush—the wars in the Middle East and what he characterized in the Oct. 22 debate as “record deficits and the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression.”Obama says he will:• continue to focus on education, ensuring that every student with a desire to go to college has the opportunity to do so; • continue to continue to focus on education, ensuring that every student with a desire to go to college has the opportunity push for education reform in primary and secondary education that will ensure that our young people are prepared to succeed in college once they get there;• continue to insist that the wealthiest among our nation’s citizens “do a little more” and will push to bring back to America the manufacturing jobs that have been shipped overseas; • drive down energy costs by taking advantage of domestic sources like oil and natural gas. He supports offshore drilling done responsibly;• as stated in the October 22nd debate, “maintain the strongest military in the

world…and go after those who would do us harm,”while whittling away at waste in military spending; and• continue to support our nation’s veterans and troops by, among other things, working with the private sector to urge businesses to hire them, a program he started in his first administration. We are not surprised that Obama hasn’t fulfilled a number of his 2008 promises. The mountain of uncooperative, disrespectful—at times insulting-- tactics, schemes etc., he has been subjected to, almost since the inception of his term, exceeds anything any other President in recent memory has had to endure. The frequency of these incidences make it clear that the mere presence of this Black man as the head of this American government has been a clear source of irritation to many (mostly in the Republican Party) on Capitol Hill.We recognize that once re-elected, this environment will not likely change—at least immediately. However, we believe that a 2nd term itself will be a mandate that it is his vision and actions the American people support as opposed to those championed by the intractable conservative Republican blockade currently in Congress. While Obama has been criticized by some African Americans for not moving faster to address our concerns—the staggering 14 percent Black unemployment rate, to name one—we believe him to be more sensitive to these issues. We realize that in spite of his hands being congressionally tied in addressing our community’s specific issues, Obama nevertheless represents a far better chance for these concerns to be addressed then would be the case were Britt Romney our President. It is for all the above reasons the AFRO overwhelmingly endorses Barack H. Obama to be the clear choice for President of the United States.Following his re-election, we encourage President Obama to quickly move to:• address the Black unemployment rate;• continue to empower the Department of Justice to seek out and prosecute those who would tamper with voting rights;• work with the Department of Education to demand that states fund educational systems proportionately and shut down efforts to close off close off educational opportunities for college-bound minority student by whacking away at race-minority based scholarships and set asides which even the playing field; and

• work to reduce the deficit.

Valdez has made Sheriff’s department a

model for nation DALLAS – Sheriff Lupe Valdez has made Dallas County safer and her department more accountable to county families and taxpayers.

“As Sheriff, I’ve worked day and night to increase efficiency at the Sheriff’s Department and county jail while saving taxpayers money,” said Valdez. “My team and I have accomplished both of these objectives while decreasing the crime rate in our community.” “If re-elected, I will continue to build on our record of success,” she said.

After inheriting a department in disarray and an unsafe, overpopulated county jail in violation of standards of justice, Valdez reformed her department, partnered with the Dallas County District Attorney and County Probation Department to increase enforcement of warrants, removing dangerous individuals from Dallas neighborhoods and has brought the jail into compliance with all state and federal laws. “Thanks to Lupe, we are a safer county,” said Darlene Ewing, Dallas County Democratic Party Chair. “Gone are the days of jail overcrowding. That’s real tax dollar savings and means that space is available for truly dangerous criminals. She deserves another term,” Ewing said. Sheriff Valdez is the second female elected sheriff in the State of Texas. Sheriff Valdez has worked in law enforcement for more than 30 years at both the federal and state levels.

North Dallas Churches Join

National “Souls to Polls” Early Vote

MovementDelta Sigma Theta Sorority to provide transportation to polls after church services

Dallas, TX -- Congregations at Christian Chapel Temple of Faith in North Dallas and Mt. Hebron Missionary Baptist Church in Garland will be participating

in the “Souls to Polls” ecumenical movement to encourage early voting on Sunday, October 28th by traveling to local voting precincts immediately following church services. This is one of the largest voter turnout efforts of its kind taking place in North Texas, which offers only one Sunday for early voting in the upcoming general election. Casting early votes after Sunday services is a popular ritual for African American congregations in states where early voting is available. On Sunday, October 28th the churches are partnering with Delta Sigma Theta Sorority North Dallas Suburban Alumnae Chapter to drive church members directly from services to local voting precincts -- caravan style. At 1 p.m. congregations at both churches will proceed from church parking lots to designated polling locations. Drivers departing from Christian Chapel Temple of Faith will be headed to Fretz Park Recreation Center on Beltline and Hillcrest in Dallas. Mt. Hebron Missionary Baptist participants will be headed to Garland City Hall. This election year has seen a surge in the number of states limiting or seeking to limit the early voting period, including Sunday voting. In Texas, the

early voting period opened October 22nd, a Monday and concludes on Friday, November 2nd -- leaving Sunday, October 28th as the only Sunday for large numbers of church-going voters to go to the polls after services. “Delta Sigma Theta has a long history of supporting the right of all Americans to vote, dating back to the days of the women’s suffrage movement,” said Jada Burton, president of the sorority’s North Dallas Suburban Alumnae Chapter. “Our goal is to strike a mighty blow against voter apathy and remove obstacles to voting -- including having transportation to the polls. We are actively engaged in educating and motivating eligible citizens to vote and to encourage others to do likewise.” “Souls to Polls” is a national initiative which teams church congregations with civic and community-based organizations to encourage voter turnout. Christian Chapel Temple of Faith, led by Pastor Kwesi R. Kamau, is located at 14120 Noel Road, Dallas. Mt. Hebron Missionary Baptist Church, led by Pastor Leonard O. Leach, is located at 1233 Texas Highway 66, Garland.

FORT WORTH, Texas – American Airlines, in partnership with The United Negro College Fund (UNCF), has launched the travel industry’s first gift card that supports education. When an American Airlines UNCF Gift Card is purchased, $5 of every $50 will be contributed to UNCF through May 1, 2013.

The weak U.S. economy continues to impact students’ ability to earn money for college. In fact, 95 percent of students who receive support from UNCF need financial aid. American is offering travelers the opportunity to support UNCF in its mission of getting minority students to and through college.

“American Airlines is deeply committed to supporting children, education, and diversity and inclusion in the communities we serve,” said David Campbell, American’s Vice President – Safety, Security and Environmental. “Financial pressure is one of the key reasons students do not graduate. We are proud to engage our customers with this virtual gift card for travel to create a new source of donations that will make it possible for talented and deserving students to become college graduates.”

UNCF President and CEO Michael L. Lomax said, “Today’s students are tomorrow’s leaders, and we are extremely pleased with this expansion of our long-standing relationship with American Airlines.

At present, 60 percent of students who receive UNCF support come from families with annual incomes of less than $30,000, and more than 50 percent of students at UNCF colleges are the first in their families to attend college. The American Airlines UNCF Gift Card is expected to generate donations and play a key role in empowering minority students economically through educational advancement.”

American has supported UNCF for more than 30 years as part of its long-term commitment to corporate responsibility through event sponsorships including the UNCF “An Evening of Stars” entertainment special, employee volunteerism and workplace giving, and

through its African-American Employee Resource Group’s (AAERG’s) fundraising efforts. In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, the AAERG raised approximately $10,000 in a two-week emergency funding campaign.

Award-Winning Gospel Singer and Health Advocate Yo l a n d a A d a m s J o i n s Colgate-Palmolive to Help African Americans With Diabetes "Take Charge" of Their Oral Health

NEW YORK,-- In support of American Diabetes Month®, Colgate Total® is partnering with Yolanda Adams, the m u l t i - G R A M M Y ® award-winning Gospel artist and host of " W e l l n e s s Wednesday" on her syndicated radio show, Yolanda Adams Live, to educate African Americans about the possible connection between diabetes and gum disease and to empower them to help take charge of their diabetes. A recent survey about oral health reveals a lack of awareness about the var ious h e a l t h i s s u e s a s s o c i a t e d w i t h diabetes. One third of all respondents (32%) were not aware of the possible connection between diabetes and oral health and were less likely to associate oral health issues with diabetes than almost all other health conditions related to diabetes.i More than half (54%) reported one or more symptoms of gum disease, yet 67% do not discuss their oral health with a healthcare professional.ii The survey also noted that when informed, African Americans are more likely to become concerned and say they plan to pay more attention to their oral health issues. Adams, a health and wellness advoca te , and o the r hea l thca re professionals will be leading the effort in African American and Black church communities, encouraging everyone to join the "Take Charge" campaign, an initiative presented by Colgate Total® to help increase awareness of oral care for Americans living with diabetes."I want to help educate African Americans who are l iving with diabetes," said Adams. "People with diabetes are highly susceptible to bacterial infection; and many do not know that they are at greater risk for gum disease. It is so important that those living with diabetes or who have family members living with the disease know how to manage their dental health. People need to unders tand the connection between diabetes and dental health and be willing to work with their healthcare providers. This enables them to take charge of their diabetes to prevent and treat gum disease."

Over half of African Americans (55%) surveyed said it is very important for them to have family support in helping them manage their diabetes and almost two-thirds (63%) agreed that it is very important that their family was aware of the health issues related to diabetes.iii Family support and awareness of health issues is significantly more important for African Americans than Caucasians.Additional key findings from the survey include:Thirty percent (30%) of African Americans reported a decline in their oral health since being diagnosed with diabetes, which is almost double the decline reported by Caucasians (16%).iv66% of respondents were unaware that

people with diabetes are twice as likely to develop serious gum disease compared with those who do not have diabetes.vUpon hearing this i n f o r m a t i o n , t h e majority (56%) said they plan to pay more attention to their oral healthcare.viMore than half (59%) of all respondents and 4 4 % o f A f r i c a n A m e r i c a n s respondents reported that they were not personally concerned about gum disease, and only 38% of people with diabetes,

but 53% of African Americans, said that they pay "a great deal" of attention to their oral health and dental care.viiAfrican Americans and Hispanics were more likely than Caucasians to say they pay "a great deal" of attention to their oral health and dental care (53% of Afr ican-Americans and 46% of Hispanics vs. 34% of Caucasians).viiiAfrican Americans (19%) are much more likely to rely on friends/family for information about oral health than are Caucasians (11%) or Hispanics (15%). They are also more likely to rely on magazines or newspapers (20%) and TV shows (17%) for oral care information than Caucasians (9% and 2%).ixAfrican Americans and Hispanics are eager for more information compared to Caucasians; 23% of Caucasians, compared to 40% of African Americans and 43% of Hispanics, said they "have some information about the possible link between oral health/dental care and diabetes but would like more." "It's promising to see that the vast majority of people with diabetes (88%) say that not all toothpaste is created equal," said Philip Durocher, General Manager of Oral Care, Colgate Total®.i "As the only toothpaste FDA-approved and American Dental Association-accepted to help prevent gingivitis,* which is the most common form of gum disease,ii Colgate Total® is a good choice for people with diabetes."For more information and resources on how to manage oral health and diabetes, visit www.OralHealthAndDiabetes.com.

AUSTIN – The Texas Workforce Commission (TWC) has announced that Bexar County resident Marvin Dale Armer, Jr., was convicted of third degree state felony theft and was sentenced to five years in jail for defrauding the state’s Unemployment Insurance (UI) benefits program. Armer pled no contest to the charges on Oct. 11, and also was ordered to pay court costs, attorney fees and $32,051 in restitution. The sentence followed a joint investigation conducted by TWC, the Department of Labor (DOL) Office of Inspector General and the DOL Office of Labor Racketeering and Fraud Investigations in Houston. “TWC investigates those individuals who seek to defraud the UI benefits program,” said TWC Chairman Andres Alcantar. “Our agency is committed to protecting those deserving individuals who lose their jobs through no fault of their own, and the Texas

employers who fund the program.” The investigation revealed that Armer and his spouse, Sabrina Armer, filed for UI benefits citing layoffs either from employers that did not exist, or for employment that never happened. Additionally, the Armers opened tax accounts for nine fake companies with TWC’s Tax Department and reported fictitious wages for the alleged employees of these companies. Sabrina Armer also was convicted of a state felony in this case on April 11, and was sentenced to two years of probation, was ordered to pay court costs and attorney fees, and $13,481 in restitution. “TWC will remain vigilant in ensuring that the unemployment benefits program fulfills its intended purpose of assisting Texans who lose their work without fault,” said TWC Commissioner Representing Labor Ronny Congleton. “We will vigorously pursue anyone

who threatens the integrity of the program.” TWC’s Regulatory Integrity Division (RID) is charged with detecting and preventing fraud, waste and abuse. RID enforces all regulatory statutes within the jurisdiction of the agency, including Tax, Workforce, Trade Act, Skills Development Fund, Self-Sufficiency Fund, Child Care Development Fund and all other programs that TWC administers. Prevention, detection and elimination of fraud, waste and abuse in the UI benefits program are top priorities; ensuring funds are available exclusively to those who meet the eligibility requirements.“Defrauding the state and the tax-paying employers of Texas is a serious offense. This conviction sends a message to those who would commit such crimes that TWC will aggressively investigate and prosecute your misdeeds,” said TWC Commissioner Representing Employers Tom Pauken.

Whether it is by walking down the aisle of dried flowers in a craft shop, or enjoying the soothing action of a throat lozenge, the aromatic behavior of eucalyptus is r e f r e s h i n g t o t h e s e n s e s . Eucalyptus is an extremely v e r s a t i l e p l a n t . Native to Australia, it is mainly cultivated in Brazil and China. The dried leaves were traditionally used in small cloth sachets to perfume linen closets. Dried stems with leaves are often used in vases and baskets a l o n e o r i n arrangements. The essential oil of eucalyptus has numerous applications.

Long used as a remedy for cold and flu symptoms, eucalyptus is soothing to sore throats, boosts the immune system, and reduces the spread of many forms of bacteria. It works especially well on the respiratory system when addressing congestion. Under the direction of a certified aromatherapist, eucalyptus may be combined with other essential oils to create an effective synergistic blend to approach physical issues, as well as freshen the home.

The essential oil of eucalyptus is surprisingly economical. A small bottle can last a long time even with heavy usage. To improve breathing, place a few drops on a cotton ball and wrap in a tissue keeping it near your nose (e.g. in a

shirt pocket) or simply add a few drops to a cup of hot water placed nearby. The aromatic action works almost immediately to open nasal passages. Eucalyptus is often found in soaps, detergents and perfumes. It is also

u s e d i n i n s e c t repellants and room sprays. It can be used as an addition to the laundry wash cycle for its anti-fungal and a n t i - b a c t e r i a l properties. A few drops in a spray bottle of water work well misted around t h e h o u s e – particularly on the

screens of open windows – to discourage flies. It is also an effective repellant for silverfish and cockroaches.

Eucalyptus is one of the most popular of essential oils largely because of its vast range of usage. It should be a part of every basic aromatherapy kit. With proper storage (i.e. away from light and heat), it has a long shelf life - up to 2 years.

The majesty of the plant world extends further than the eye can see. Eucalyptus is literally a breath of fresh air.

The oldest and largest Black chamber of commerce in the nation, the Dallas Black Chamber of Commerce (DBCC), held its 86th Annual Awards Banquet on Friday, October 12, 2012 at the Dallas Convention Center.

As expected, the phenomenal businessman, speaker, author George C. Fraser brought a strong message as he praised the Chamber for its leadership nationwide.

Mr. Fraser IS Chairman and CEO of FraserNet, Incorporated and the Founder of the PowerNetworking Conference, which is the largest gathering of Black professionals, business owners and community leaders in the nation and was held in Dallas this past June and will be held in Dallas again in 2013.

Mr. Fraser addressed the crowd on various subjects including the need for African Americans to support their own and that black businesses should strive to become the number one employer of Black people. He also spoke on how the Black community was increasingly disconnected and that only by reconnecting can we concentrate our power and become the “power brokers we were created to be.” He encouraged attendees to support black businesses, while also sharing important nuggets, like, “remove toxic people from your life,” and “stop doing permanent things with temporary people.”

Mr. Fraser, who is no stranger to many in the D/FW Metroplex, talked about how he and his siblings were orphans and how once he “aged out” of the system he began charting his future.

More than 600 attendees came out to celebrate the 86th Anniversary of the Dallas Black Chamber’s

constructive leadership in the Dallas business community. The annual banquet is the highlight of the chamber’s annual event line up as it serves to provide a progress report on the chamber for the year as well as to acknowledge those chamber members, sponsors and supporters who have gone above and beyond to support the chamber in its community efforts. Platinum sponsors for the banquet were: Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART), Texas Instruments and Wells Fargo. Other major level sponsors were: Comerica Bank, HNTB, City of Dallas-Office of Economic Development, Dallas County Community College Dis t r ic t , Dal las /For t Wor th International Airport, Dallas Independent School District, FirstSouthwest, Oncor and Texas Rangers. Student Leadership Institute Motivates

Young Leaders!

Students, recognized as potential leaders by their school principal, were invited to spend the day with mayors, clergymen, judges, school superintendents, business owners, professional athletes and other community leaders. Students from Dallas County Southern sector high schools, including all of the Oak Cliff high schools, Cedar Hill, DeSoto, Duncanville and Lancaster were in attendance at the day long institute that was intended to encourage, educate and enthuse young people to be involved in the i r communities as young leaders. According to Leadership Southwest, Inc., Board Chair Ella Goode Johnson,” it is always an exciting time to see Southern Dallas County future leaders come together in harmony to see and hear about leadership in action from so many different arenas.” This year’s Student Leadership Institute was chaired by Dr. Tawana Stallworth.

The Institute was first conceptualized and brought into being by the LSW class of 2005 to help high school students learn the needed skills to become effective leaders of the future. The successful event was hosted by Dallas Baptist University. The keynote speakers were State of Texas Senator Royce West, and Dr. David Harris - Superintendent of DeSoto Independent School District. Program participants also included Dr. Marcus D. King of Johnson Chapel Baptist Church, Cedar Hill Mayor Hon. Rob Franke, Rev. Bryan Carter of Dallas Concord Church, Grant Galliford, Allstate, Judge Valencia Nash and other notables. Class sessions were taught by many local leaders, including Dr. Larry Lewis - Educational consultant, Patricia Coleman of Bank of DeSoto, Jabari Johnson of The Heads Up! Foundation, Attorney Larry Taylor of the Cochran Law Firm, Aaron Palmer of Move Baby Move!, Ada L. Calculating success at the Winston Science

competition

The Winston Science competition means physics calculations, complex chemical reactions and engineering. But don’t be fooled! The elite science competition at The Winston School also means building flutes, developing new household products, root beer brewing and duct tape creations. More than 5,000 Dallas area students will apply scientific principles in inventive, creative and — quite often — messy new ways in more than 25 separate events during the next two weeks. Students from local school districts and private schools will try to hypothesize, observe and experiment their way to success during the competition, which runs from Saturday, Oct. 27th to Friday, Nov. 9th at The Winston School, 5707 Royal Lane in Dallas. “Sometimes scientific breakthroughs require popsicle sticks and paper-mâché,” said Head of School Polly Peterson. “Winston Science challenges participants to apply critical thinking skills to scientific questions we’ve studied for centuries. We just add The Winston School twist by looking at these questions, to develop new products and create unique root beer recipes.” This year, students in grades 1 through 12 will put their thinking caps on to tackle problems in everything from physics and engineering to anthropology and architecture. Since its beginning more than 20 years ago, more than 10,000 students have competed in

Winston Science, which challenges students to solve scientific questions in a fun and creative manner. What does it take to create a vehicle that will allow a raw egg to withstand an up to eight-meter drop? Whose grasp of chemistry will result in the best natural root brew? Which spaghetti bridge will hold the most weight? Find out at the Winston Science competition. This year’s competition includes an event to honor Angela Michelle Jamison, a Winston School sixth-grader who died June 23rd following a sudden illness. The duct tape crafting competition is a remembrance of Angela’s love to create duct tape jewelry, hair bands and other items. The events are generally broken into three grade ranges — 1st through 5th grade, 6th through 8th grade and 9th through 12th grade. Events include: Adventures in Duct Tape, Designer Duct Tape Competitions, Magic Marble Machine Competition, Elementary Catapult Competition, Spaghetti Bridge Competition, Pan-Style Flute Competition, Helium Balloon, Build A Dinosaur, How in the World Does it Work Competition, Rube Goldberg Competition, Popsicle Stick Suspension Bridge Competition, Paper C u t O u t s , R o o t B e e r B r e w i n g Competition, Egg Drop Competition, Insect Project, Make A New Product Competition, Eiffel Tower Competition and the Rock Competition. Award ceremonies take place throughout the two-week event. Competing school districts and private schools include: Dallas ISD, Garland ISD, Mansfield, Grand Prairie ISD and Lake Dallas ISD, Highland ISD, The Winston School, The Hockaday School, Bishop Lynch High School and Nolan Catholic High School.

HARVARD GRADUATE PUBLISHES NEW BOOK SERIES, "DIARY OF AN

OBAMA DISCIPLE"

Nationwide (BlackNews.com) -- Cecil Faust, a Harvard Business School septuagenarian, has published three volumes of his new book, Diary of an Obama Disciple. After receiving a Harvard MBA and working in the information technology industry for over forty five years at such places as the California Institute of Technologys Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), Wall Street, and corporate America, he became immersed in politics with the election of the first Black President of the United States, Barack Obama. The Diary traces the journey of Mr. Faust as he studied and analyzed the day to day battles of the President against an oppositional foe who wanted him to fail. It starts on September 17, 2008, following the campaign, then the inauguration and the day to day governing through health care reform. What was catalogued in the three volumes was a brilliant young strategic thinker that had exceptionally acute political antennae. Faust comments, "Our President is a policy wonk who wants to understand the long term implications of his actions and how those actions circumscribe a coherent, cohesive overall strategy. I next watched our brilliant strategist dive into the political quagmire left by the

previous Republican administration: all government systems were failing, a global economy on the verge of collapse, banking institutions falling like dominoes, a budget deficit of almost $1 trillion; a deficit that was created from a surplus that was left by the previous Democratic administration, a global warming catastrophe, two wars, several worldwide skirmishes, and a constitution that showed signs of tattering. What did he do, given these 'opportunities for

excellence?" He continues, "What were some of his accomplishments? A stimulus plan, a budget blueprint emphasizing a long term viability strategy for the country based on solid long term goals of health care, education and energy, visits to the G-20 Summit, our European partners, the Americas, the 34 countries to our South, specific signals to Cuba and Iran, an attempt to engage with North Korea, open arms to China and Russia, social initiatives like SCHIP allowing our young deprived socio-economic citizens to get quality health care, national health care reform, and Wall Street reform; he has burnished our tarnished international reputation. He has valiantly fought and dismembered a dangerous terror network, killing its chief, Osama bin Laden. We are out of Iraq and getting out of Afghanistan... and the list goes on."Volume II and Volume III capture the political slide of the U.S. government into total gridlock, a rigor mortis that was brought about by three oppositional political actors and ends with the respective parties conventions. According to Faust, "The main message of the Diary is that we have become too polarized in the public square; it is beyond time for

moderation. We have had too many heated debates with no hope of meeting in the middle. The main issue, however, is not just the boorish discourse, but the foundation upon which our democracy was built. Can it stand the constant chipping away that is happening due to the twisted views of a group of extremists? We have to come back and meet in the middle to repair the damage that has been done, to give the foundation more time to mend the brutal attacks that have taken place since a small band of extremists took over the public square." "We are not an island and can not pretend to be so. What happens outside of these United States can and will have dramatic impacts on what happens within. I hope that on November 7th that we re-group as Americans and quit this petty bickering that has taken over our politics. We have the intellectual capital,

the people power and currently access to capital whereby we can make the investments that will propel us into a bright future. The path that we are on at this moment will only lead us off a political and socio-economic cliff," Faust says. All three volumes of his book, Diary of an Obama Disciple, are available on
