Clad in a trademark zoot suit, Cab Calloway was always the height of fash-ion, and his namesake stakes offers a stylish $150,000 purse for 3-year-olds going 1 1/16 miles over the inner turf, part of the rich New York Stallion Se-ries restricted to offspring of sires based in the Empire State.

Cannonball has collected nearly $250,000 for his efforts on the lawn, but Ken and Sarah Ramsey’s homebred gelding came thisclose to never even try-ing the turf.

“After he got beat here in a maiden 50 (claimer) last year, we were on the verge of sending him to Charlton Bak-er up in Finger Lakes, where we put a bunch of the other ones to try to shake loose,” said trainer Wesley Ward. “I was on the phone with Mr. Ramsey and I said, ‘Let’s try the horse one time on the turf before we do that, let’s give him one shot.’ And he went 1:08 and change and won by 4. It was a nice lit-

tle surprise, which is nice in horse rac-ing. He breezed like a turf horse, so I just thought let’s give him one shot. It worked out good, because the only turf in Finger Lakes is in the infield.”

Cannonball (John Velazquez) has won two turf stakes since, the most re-cent being the 6-furlong Pebo’s Guy at Belmont Park in May, when he closed to catch Redefined by a nose, but the son of Catienus has never won going beyond a mile.

“He might be a better sprinter on the turf,” Ward said, “but the main part of winning races is having the fastest horse going in, and he looks like he is.”

The 8-5 morning-line favorite comes paired with tag-team partner and Catie-nus cropmate Almighty Silver, who will draw in if the race moves to the main track.

Scott Schwartz sends out the uncou-pled entry of Express To Thewest (Rudy Rodriguez) and Brookhaven’s Money (Javier Castellano). The former, a geld-ed son of Western Expression owned by

Bonnie Jo Wooster, makes his third start on the turf and heads to post as the lon-gest shot on the board.

“Express runs his best races in the stakes,” Schwartz said. “He came in sec-

ond in the Times Square (at Aqueduct in April); in June he came in fourth (behind three Calloway starters) and got really

hammered. He’s just got to get the trip. He needs a top race to get up there. He’s probably going to come from the back. There should be a lot speed, because a lot of them are coming out of sprints. He’s an honest horse. Ru-dy’s riding good too, he’s good at bringing the long shots. If he gets the trip and things work out, maybe we get lucky.”

As for entrymate Brookhaven’s Money, the son of Precise End takes to the lawn for owners Her-bert and Carol Schwartz.

“I’ve never run him on the turf, I can’t say if he’s going to like it or not. I don’t know if he can han-dle the grass, I’m just giv-ing him a shot for the Stal-lion Stakes,” the trainer said. “They’re all kind of taking a shot though. He’s a nice a horse, he’s consistent. He’s carry-ing a lot of weight though. If it rains off, then he’s got a big shot.”

Phobia (Ramon Dominguez) goes out for Medico Stable and Jennifer Contessa, and also tries something new, as the cleverly named son of Freud has never raced beyond 6 furlongs.

“Phobia is a fast horse,” said trainer Gary Contessa. “I don’t know if he can get the distance, but you can’t not take a chance with a horse like Phobia. It’s a great opportunity to take down a big purse with a very decent New York-

bred. I don’t know if he can go long; he’s going to be tested. But one thing about him is he is very fast. We’ll see how far he can go, we’ll see how far he can carry his speed.”

Contessa feels the slower opening frac-tions might set up his charge at the end.

“Sometimes horses like him stop af-ter going 21, 44 but sometimes they can go 24, 48 and they find themselves out

there and that’s what I’m hoping.”

Barclay Tagg saddles early second choice and hometown boy Doc N Roll (Eibar Coa). Bred by McMahon of Saratoga and owned by Sackatoga Stable, he has two impres-sive turf wins this spring at a mile.

Gold Vendetta (Rajiv Maragh) is another stretch-ing out Wednesday. Barry Weisbord’s homebred son of Gold Fever has never

gone beyond 6 1/2 furlongs and makes just his second turf start. In his first, June 29 at Belmont, the Alan Goldberg trainee captured a 6-furlong sprint.

Del Carroll sends out Pont Street Sta-ble’s Key Victory (Cornelio Velasquez). The son of Western Expression breaks from the rail and should appreciate the distance. He’s hit the board in three of four turf tries, and gets Velasquez aboard for the first time.

Dawn Schosberg’s Fortune Faded (Edgar Prado), the third son of Catie-nus in the group, waits in the wings as a main-track-only entrant for trainer Rick Schosberg.

Spotlight on UK Racing by Timeform & Racing UK

Wednesday, August 6th, PONTEfRACT (UK) Race 6 (11:40 am)Class 4 Handicap (6yo+ Rated 61-80) 1m; Purse $16,000

RACE ANALYSIS (In Program Number Order)1 NEVADA DESERT: Took advantage of his falling handicap mark to win for the first time in a year at Beverley last time. Still has bit to find on last year’s figures but should go well here under penalty. TIMEFORM RATING 91+

2 BAHIANO: His losing run stretches back more than two years and there has been little encouragement on his last two starts to suggest he’s ready to take advantage of ever-decreasing mark. 96

3 mAJOR mAGPIE: Has run well to finish third on three occasions this year and was the only one staying on from off pace behind Wind Shuffle at Carlisle on his penultimate start. A steady gallop was his undoing last time and he’s worth another chance to confirm promise of that previous outing for all he’ll need well-run contest. 97

4 mOTAffARED: His handicap mark has taken a hit since an impressive course and distance win on his reappearance. Inconsistent since and never threatened behind Nevada Desert last time. Others make more appeal. 93

5 ROYAL STORm: Successes in a handicap and a claimer are the only bright spots in an otherwise inconsistent campaign. Probably best over shorter trips and difficult to recommend. 94

6 DISPOL ISLE: Returned to her best form when winning a fair contest at Beverley on her penultimate start, benefiting from ferocious early pace to swoop close home. Reunited with the winning jockey that day here and has claims, though a disappointing effort at Thirsk on Saturday is still fresh in the mind. 94

7 PRINCE SAmOS: Ran his best race since changing stables when promoted to second behind She’s Our Lass at Haydock last time and looks well handicapped on his form from a few years back if able to build on that effort. Obvious claims. 98+

8 CHAmPAIN SANDS: Just one creditable effort to his name all year when runner-up to Stoic Leader at Carlisle in May. Has looked on the downgrade since and hard to recommend. 95

CONCLUSIONA tricky race, with only one guaranteed front runner in Royal Storm, and as he’s better over shorter. There’s a chance this could become a tactical affair. The Richard Whitaker stable is going well at the moment, and Nevada Desert is likely to be favorite to follow up his win at Beverley 8 days ago, but PRINCE SAmOS may represent better value. He’d been off for two months before producing his best effort for his current yard last time out. That race alone gives him a decent chance, but if anywhere near his best 2007 form he could prove to be very well treated at the weights this morning.

Wednesday, August 6th, KEmPTON PARK (UK) Race 1 (1:20 pm) Class 4 Apprentice Handicap

(4yo+ Rated 66-85) 1m3/8; Purse $14,500

RACE ANALYSIS (In Program Number Order)1 SAfARI SUNDOWNER: Enjoying a fine season on Polytrack, and his success over course and distance last month was his sixth of the campaign. Well ridden on that occasion and, reunited with the capable apprentice William Carson (two winners form just a handful of rides since); he could make light work of this 5 lb higher mark. TIMEFORM RATING 98

2 mOTARJm: Has held his form well since notching up a hat-trick of successes on the Polytrack at Wolverhampton earlier this year, shaping particularly well for long way at Great Leighs on his latest outing on the level (badly hampered over hurdles

subsequently). This drop in trip is probably against him though, and others make more appeal. 98

3 LISATHEDADDY: On a long losing run, yet for all that she’s usually reliable. However, she’s ran like a horse with a physical problem on her last two starts, with a very slow start also doing her no favors last time. Plenty to prove. 99

4 PRImE NUmBER: Has a good record at the track and was enterprisingly ridden to win a messy contest here in June. His handicap mark has taken a hit as a result and he has work to do to win, whilst his tendency to throw in the odd poor run also tampers enthusiasm. 94

5 SHOW WINNER: Has finished runner-up on three of his last four starts for trainer Andrew Balding who continues in good form (22% winners in the last 14 days), beaten two and a quarter lengths by Safari Sundowner at Kempton last time. He’s weighted to reverse placings with that rival today, and the booking of one of the leading apprentices is another plus. Big chance. 100

6 SHImONI: Just one win to her name, that nearly two years ago, and began to look unreliable towards end of last season. Has changed stables since and is entitled to need run. 99

7 RESPLENDENT ACE: Has an excellent record at Kempton, and made it four from eight with a career-best effort when beating Mixing by two and a half lengths last time. Still relatively unexposed around this trip and has obvious claims of following up, for all that his jockey has ridden just two winners since July 2006. 97

8 WIND fLOW: Has progressed this year, winning three times on Polytrack, his latest success coming when beating Leyte Gulf by a length and a half at Great Leighs in May. His last two wins came over further though and will need to improve to defy a mark that has risen 19 lb since he began in handicaps. 98

9 YAB ADEE: - SCRATCHED -

CONCLUSIONA trappy contest to solve and it may prove best to side with those in form. SHOW WINNER has proved the model of con-sistency of late and represents a trainer enjoying his best year yet. Combine that with the booking of one of the apprentice finds of the season and the five-year-old could prove hard to beat. He could fight out the finish once more with Safari Sundowner, who’s gone up 5 lb for his success over the Andrew Balding-trained gelding last time and is thriving this year. Resplendent Ace looks the best of the remainder.

and is not an offer to sell securities.

RACE 1: SACRIFICE BUNT is the only 9-furlong winner in the field, something that deserves a mention in this spot, though his 1-for-19 mark is scary. KNOW THE GAME has three wins in only 11 career starts, and that alone makes him dangerous in this group. CLAY COUNTY ran well in his debut and probably doesn’t have to improve too much to get unsaddled.

RACE 2: Honk, honk! We like Donk. WESTWARD GO should get enough pace to rally into and looks to be sitting on a top effort. TANGANYIKA takes the biggest drop in the game and can contend with the right trip. COASTAL FLARE looms a danger but will be overbet once again.

RACE 3: VICARIOUS drops in for a tag and could get some honest splits to chase; she rates a tepid call. QUIET MOVER looks to be a hand-ful on or near the lead, and trainer John Fahey III has been hot to start the meet. STRAND OF GOLD could finish third; someone will.

RACE 4: EXPANSION takes the blinkers off and gets a much better post than rival GOOD REQUEST, who beat him home last time; maybe he can turn the tables and get Seth Benzel his first win. Good Request im-proved in the second start of his form cycle and rates the one to beat, but he’ll be an underlay. MISCHIEF gets a cozy draw and should move forward off a solid third at Belmont Park; quite capable.

RACE 5: RETRIEVER has shown some snappy speed in the mornings, highlighted by am awesome gate drill over the track July 26. YES I’M CLEVER has also been doing his homework and seems ready to fire at first asking for a solid barn. MADISON HEIGHTS should come out running.

RACE 6: EL TAMBERITO hooked a nice one last time at Belmont and needs only to maintain his form to get the job done. DRIVEN BY SUC-CESS looms the main danger and comes off a long layoff to make his first start for Bruce Levine. AFRIKANER made up more than 15 lengths in his debut, but the winner that day was a lifetime maiden, so take that performance with a grain of salt.

RACE 7: One of the better-looking maiden races of the meet sports sev-eral high-quality firsters. ZENSATIONAL was a $700,000 2-year-old-in-training purchase in February, so he’s clearly one to watch; Bill Mott, Kent Desormeaux and Zayat Stables won a classroom full of freshman races last summer. SPEED LIMIT might want a bit more ground but is out of a full-sister to champion Banshee Breeze, who helped Carl Nafzger get into the Hall of Fame Monday. BIG FLIRT should show some serious speed from the opening bell.

RACE 8: The fact that TOURISM won her debut for a barn that likes to give them a few trial runs speaks volumes about her talent. Got a feel for winners last time on the main track and the day’s best bet should love the switch back to the green. PARTY GIRL might get forgotten on the tote but she’s run a pair of races that would get her in the door here. NEHANTIC KAT faces open company for the first time but can contend from off-the-pace.

RACE 9: The Cab Calloway looks to be filled with early speed so DOC N ROLL could find himself in the good spot turning for home. Gets a class test today, but only CANNONBALL has done anything special on the weeds; that one rates an obvious favorite but might be better-suited to sprinting and is worth trying to beat at about 7-5. No idea how BROOKHAVEN’S MONEY will take to the grass, but he won’t have to be a Cub Cadet get a cut.

RACE 10: Another race just loaded with speed and begging for a bomber. Dust off the “Samyn on the green” chant for CONDUCT OF HONOUR, who made a belated rally last time after being steadied early. IRON CURTAIN has a big chance once again, but hasn’t always taken advantage. PLEASE IMPRESS has gotten the hang of the turf game in his last two and would be no surprise.

Dark Tuesday Specials!

14 Wednesday, August 6, 2008

Tod MarksHip 158 – the sales-topper – takes a walk earlier this week. The Storm Cat colt’s dam has produced three stakes winners.

Ben Walden Jr. doesn’t come to Saratoga often. When he does, trust him, he’s got the goods.

Walden and his Gracefield consignment banner showed up at Saratoga for the first time since selling Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile winner Corinthian four years ago and he proved it again with a son of Storm Cat. The dark bay colt impressed Cool-more enough to bid $2 million to top the sales.

Hip 158 – three white socks trimming a sleek Storm Cat-esque body – started at $500,000 and went skyward. Even-tually, M.V. Magnier of the Coolmore team secured the colt from the back ring.

“It’s a fair price for him,” Magnier said. “He’s by the right sire. The lads liked him, they absolutely loved him. He’s a lovely horse.”

Walden and Phil Steinberg own the mare, Get Lucky, and foal-shared with WinStar Farm. WinStar, who owned Haskell winner Bluegrass Cat (who’s out of this colt’s half-sister) put up the stud fee while Walden did the rest, including venturing the 800 miles to Saratoga.

Walden thought about Keeneland September, where he has 31 horses, including six in Book One. That would have been the easy choice.

“You come all the way up here instead of going across town to Keeneland from Newtown Pike, everything has to fall into place so it’s a great relief,” Walden said. “I thought he was such a nice horse, it would have been a huge disap-pointment if he didn’t sell well. As for what he brought, I’m very happy, if he brought a million four I’d have been happy, if he brought four million I would have been happy. The point is he brought a nice price, it didn’t go absolutely berserk, but it’s a nice price.”

The sales-topper is half-brother to Grade II winner Day-dreaming, Grade III winner Accelerator and stakes winner Harborage. The pedigree runs deeper than well water – the second dam doesn’t even make the catalogue page. Part of the reason why Steinberg wasn’t quite as ebullient as Walden.

“I have mixed emotions actually, I was hoping that he re-ally might break through, but the market, the economy are a little off,” Steinberg said. “Considering everything it was still a good sale. He’s a nice colt, he’s got a great mind, he’s been good from Day One. He looks just like his daddy, you’d think it was him from his younger days. They got a good buy and I hope he runs well for them.”

Camden, South Carolina has been home to Thoroughbred excellence for generations.

The tradition continues.

LEGENDS

Walden and Steinberg bought the mare for $300,000 at Keeneland November 2002. Get Lucky.

“A great name and a great mare,” Steinberg said.Longtime leading sire Storm Cat, recently pen-

sioned, sired the sales top two lots, Hip 158 and Hip 80 (a half-sister to Lil’s Lad) who went for $1.5 mil-lion Monday night.

• • •Whitehorse Stables stepped up quickly, nailing down

Hip 102 for $750,000. The bay colt by Mr. Greeley is out of the unraced dam Arcadiana, and sports Cigar in his second dam. Eaton Sales consigned the February foal, and Nick Zito picked out and purchased the colt for Robert LaPenta’s Whitehorse Stables. Zito trusted his judgment and his vet’s judgment, replaying a mes-sage from Dr. Mark Cheney.

“Nick, you’re right, that colt is a champion,” Cheney said on voice mail. “He walked out and I said to old Oliver Brown, ‘This horse is a champion.’ He scopes good, X-rays good. We better get him.”

They got him, paying the second highest price of the night. Zito trained Mr. Greeley and saw a striking similarity.

“The father is a chestnut, this horse is dark bay or brown, but if you painted him chestnut, you’d have the same head, same body, etc., etc.,” Zito said. “Then you look at the second dam and say, ‘Well, I’ll take him brown,’ because Cigar is in the second dam.’ He’s a spectacular horse.”

LaPenta and Zito have teamed up to produce major stakes winners Da’ Tara, Cool Coal Man, War Pass and others; usually when they don’t make it as Plan A, LaPenta’s pinhooking program.

“Knowing LaPenta, he’s going to throw him into his pinhooking deal,” Zito said. “The only one he didn’t put in there was Da’ Tara, because he would have broke down, he was just too big. I told Bob, ‘You’ll get $20,000 and you’ll break him down.’ He’ll give the Arabs another chance. How can I complain? He loves playing the game and it’s working.”

Zito won’t tamper with the program. LaPenta sells plenty of horses at the sales and has kept some that proved lucrative and lucky.

“It’s working. Whatever it is, Lucky LaPenta, they go in the ring and no one wants them, they come back,

they win, they win stakes, they become champions,” Zito said. “He’s lucky. Everybody plays the game. Do you know how many pinhookers are out there? You’re probably a pinhooker.”

• • •At the end of the two-night sale, Fasig-Tipton’s

Boyd Browning Jr. walked out of the office with the coveted and telling results page from the two sessions. He liked what he read.

“Good,” Browning said. “Overall, the average was up 2 percent, the median was the exact same, the buy-back rate for the whole sale was 26 percent, compared to 24 percent last year. Frankly, everybody breathes a little bit of a sigh of relief.”

The second session provided the sales-topper and stretches of strong action.

“It’s a very good horse sale. There is a good market for quality horses,” Browning said. “None of us are smart enough to know exactly how the economy af-fects a horse sale but all in all if you would have asked most consignors and this sales company going into the sale ‘will you be happy to be up 2 percent, the median the same and the buy-back basically the same?’ Prob-ably. Ecstatic, no. But overall, fairly pleased.”

the

Millions spent by buyers. Decisions made by consignors. Lots of lookers. Back and forth, all week long. The Selected Sales ended last night. The horses head to new homes all over the world, and perhaps stardom on the racetrack. The people wait and see – and get ready to do it all over again.

3 MILES FROM LAKE GEORGE VILLAGE

518-668-3000TOPOFTHEWORLDGOLFRESORT.COM

18 HOLES, PAR 71

Serious money is being tossed around by serious people, and Tom Biederman is there, negotiating without words. Using minimal eye contact and body language, Biederman, now in his 24th year as a bid spotter at the Fasig-Tipton Saratoga Sales, keeps the offers coming until the hammer falls.

“The buyers all bid a little bit differ-ently, they tend to catch your eye,” he said. “Sometimes they get a little fidgety a horse or so before a horse they’re in-terested in.”

One of six bid spotters for the Select-ed Sales, Biederman, stationed inside the pavillion to the left of the auctioneer (Walt Robertson or Danny Green) and announcer (Terence Collier), has a pret-ty good idea of who’s who in the crowd of potential buyers.

“I know who most people represent, I know somewhat from the consignors that so and so is interested,” Biederman said. “Or I’ve been walking around and I see them looking at a horse two or three times, then I can kind of gauge what they’re looking for. You try to look at all the horses, who’s bidding

on what, what the buyers are after and mainly what the sellers are trying to get for the horse. You try to have as much information as possible.”

If you’re at the auction, be careful if you stretch or scratch your head.

“There’s been several malfunctions – when we’re in doubt we put them in. If I think they bid, I’ll put them in but if they haven’t we’ll figure it out, we’ll straighten it out. In a shakeup like that, we’ll open it back up. That doesn’t hap-pen very often.”

Biederman also splits time as an auc-tioneer for Fasig-Tipton and was fortu-nate enough to sell future Hopeful win-ner Yonaguska for $1.95 million at the Calder 2-year-old sales in 2000.

“Roger King wouldn’t go to $2 mil-lion,” recalled Biederman. “King actu-ally threw his hat into the ring, while we were selling that horse, because he was mad. He scared the horse pretty good. He was a very colorful guy around the sales. A very lively bidder.”

Because of the competitiveness of the sales, it is trendy not to be direct with your bid.

Biederman, who does sales with Fasig-Tipton in Maryland, New York,

Florida, Texas and Kentucky, has learned to deal with the nature of the bidding – in any form.

“In the 1980s, Michael Goodbody had been buying for the Arabs and he told me that whenever he was bidding he would step on my foot,” said Bie-derman. “He sat in the front row. No-body could ever find out where the bids where coming from because he was just stepping on my foot. He was a very ca-gey bidder and back in those days, you didn’t want anybody to know who was bidding on what.”

Spotters relay bids to the auction-eer and it can be a delicate business at times.

“You’re not supposed to hide (bid-ders) but your supposed to treat them with discretion,” Biederman said. “And you do that as well as you can. The auc-tioneer is always the boss. You can’t keep things from the boss.”

Outside in the yard, bid spotter Steve Dance stood at a podium, facing a slew of potential buyers amid the spectators. Visually, he covered as much ground as Willie Mays – scanning over big names such as Robert LaPenta, Nick Zito, Bob Baffert and Todd Pletcher. Speak-ing into a walkie talkie, Dance reported bids on yearlings in the ring as the on-

deck yearlings circled behind him.In addition to Biederman and Dance,

Fasig-Tipton’s Saratoga spotters includ-ed Woodie Leavell, Frank Russo, Jim Price, Tom Johnson and Bruce McCa-rty.

Tod MarksBid spotter Tom Biederman keeps an eye on the action during the first night of the sales.

Exceller fund taps contessaEdited Press Release

Gary Contessa, one of the nation’s leading Thoroughbred trainers, has been named president of the Exceller Fund, a non-profit organization that transitions former racehorses into new careers.

A Long Island native, Contessa began his career in the early 1970s as a hot-walker at Belmont Park before obtain-ing his trainer’s license in 1985. Based year-round on the NYRA circuit, Con-tessa currently ranks among America’s Top 10 trainers in purses won.

“My whole life has been built around racehorses and I see this as an oppor-tunity to give even more back to these wonderful animals,” Contessa said. “I have numerous retired Thoroughbreds at my farm in upstate New York and I have been a major supporter of the Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation and Equine Advocates for many years, but I want to do more.”

The Exceller Fund (www.exceller-fund.org) was formed more than 10 years ago to honor Exceller, the Hall of Fame Thoroughbred who died in a Swedish slaughterhouse in 1997 when he was deemed worthless as a breeding stallion. His accomplishments included the unique feat of defeating two Triple Crown winners – Affirmed and Seattle Slew – in the 1978 Jockey Club Gold Cup at Belmont Park in New York.

The Exceller Fund’s mission is “pro-viding a future beyond the finish line” for racehorses that are no longer pro-ductive at the track. Some are offered for adoption as riding horses or com-panions while others remain under the Exceller Fund’s care at a number of farms throughout the nation. The orga-nization is financed through tax-deduct-ible donations.

Contessa replaces Bonnie Mizrahi, who will maintain her position of trea-surer. Niki Smith accepted the newly created position of executive director after serving as vice president of the volunteer-based organization. Billy Hun-tington, owner and operator of Hunting-ton Equine in Lexington, Ky., has been added to the board of directors.

Jockeys take to courtThe Hartacks of the hardwood, the

Cauthens of the court, those Sandes of slam – the Saratoga jockeys returns to the scene of their greatest basketball victory Thursday to face off against a group of sixth graders from Texas in a charity hoops game at Saratoga Springs High School. Tip off is at 7 p.m. and admission is free, but donations will be accepted to benefit the Permanently Disabled Jockeys Fund.

This year, though taller themselves, the sixth graders face an even bigger challenge as the jocks will be led by Uni-versity of Kentucky basketball coach Billy Gillispie.

A yellow taxi drops off a could-be buyer. Leslie Deckard scans the Internet. One man crosses his leg and peruses his catalogue in the top row.

Calisto, the big gray horse on the wall, hovers exactly where we last saw him. Tire kickers sample the art along the balcony. The boys in valet parking fiddle with their white shirts and prac-tice golf swings.

Alex Matz and the Clancy Boys, all adorned in free hats hustled from con-signors, settle into three seats – thinking someday, someday.

Three ladies, dressed for the Oscars, stride to the bar. A couple of tourists cup their hands to the glass windows looking for the buzz. Fasig-Tipton July is analyzed and compared to Saratoga 2008.

Audio check – one, two . . . one-two-three.

Four spotters climb out of a white Chevrolet and slide dinner jackets over their shoulders. Peter O’Callaghan pac-es. Tommy Eastham and Mark Toothak-er lounge in two chairs, watching the traffic. Mark Reid Jr. hopes he betters his 3-for-4 from the night before. Tracy Farmer arrives.

Jackson Morris thinks about the “bank payment,” a colt who could make the difference. The Bluewater Sales ice-cream cart gets dusted.

Another rake goes over another patch of stonedust. Oliver Brown gazes over five red-clad Eaton grooms primp-ing two fillies. Seth Benzel takes one last look at a sleek bay filly at Denali. Tay-lor Made’s crew of ants build their king-dom, all talking about a Smarty Jones colt, who is all that. Elizabeth Voss talks about her dad.

A big black Clydesdale pulling a car-riage strolls down Madison Avenue. Gene Stevens beeps his horn at pedes-trians – not sure if it’s to get out of the way or to say look at me – and then slides to a stop with the driver-side door open. Barbara Livingston shows up in a dress.

Hip 31, the $1.2 million colt, has already left his base at Hunter Valley’s consignment. Spring Street delivers four pizzas to Paramount Sales.

The 2008 Fasig-Tipton grounds crew – legends in the making – pose for a photograph. Reiley McDonald strides to the Fasig-Tipton offices for final tweaks. Michael Hernon, Bayne Welker, Brian Graves, Jonathan Thorne begin the mamba line to the office. Consign-ors on a mission.

Tom Goff looks around and won-ders where everybody went from the first night. The first barflies meet the bartender. A novice reporter looks for a spotter, any spotter.

Kiaran and Erin McLaughlin settle into two seats. Live Oak Stud takes its place two rows from the back. Dr. Carr checks his watch. Dan Pride leads three navy-blazered boys into the pavilion. Arthur Hancock checks for his name on the seats and instinctly pedals through his catalogue – another sale, another catalogue.

Tim Kelly readies his sales sheet. Press row fills up with laptops and writ-ers. Jack Brothers takes an aisle seat. A paper rack’s supply dwindles. Walt Robertson walks through the crowd in his tuxedo – about to be game time.

Spotters take their marks. At 7:09, Terence Collier mans his post on the po-dium, “Good evening ladies and gentle-men, begin to take your seats, the sale will . . . ”

Collier pages Nick Zito, Robert LaP-enta and Starlight Stable and Robertson hands off magnums of champagne to the people who made the right bids on Da’ Tara, Commentator, Monba.

Riley Mott clutches his clipboard. The Fasig-Tipton boys – Bill Graves, Max Hodge, Dennis Lynch and Peter Penny – carve another notch into their section in the balcony. Mike and Britt Mulligan, active the first night, tie in for another battle.

John Stuart, in his stable pink, slides into the top tier. Eddie Woods, his mind on the next Big Brown, chews gum and waits.

Hip 99, a chestnut filly with some specs of flaxen in her mane, strolls into the ring. Off and running. She gets ham-mered down at $140,000.

Jay Rogers, “a new guy,” buys the first real horse, Hip 100. Legends Racing goes again, hits Hip 101 for $325,000. Then a big one, $750,000 for Hip 102, a colt by Mr. Greeley goes to White-horse Stables.

For another night, the games have begun . . .
