A 18 Island Moon February 28, 2013 Lisabellas Bistro & Bar Celebrating Coastal Cuisine 361-749-4222 Open Monday - Saturday at 5:00 pm Casual Dining at it’s Finest Nightly Seafood Specials By Ronnie Narmour [email protected] Review: Todd Dorn Well, Shorty’s finally came around with a live music performance last week and it was a goodern! Island fave, Todd Dorn (San Antonio, TX) hit town with our favorite bass player in tow, Jay Springer. These two guys have a natural chemistry about them and when you add Shorty’s laid back ambience to that mix, it only gets stronger. Dorn lived and worked in Port A for many moons and moved back to San Antonio a few years ago where he’s been in the process of recording a new CD with Radio Dog recording engineer, Jerry Clayton. While he did live here, Dorn polished his easy going “island” sound that I like to say, goes down as smooth as a mango margarita. Listen to him sing A Million Miles Away and you can easily envision our beach and our town. If I had to pigeon hole his music, I’d say it was country two-stepping with a heavy dose of salt and sand. Todd usually plays SandFest every year so we should be seeing him around the end of April… and that’s a good thing. This show at Shorty’s really hit the spot. Everything about it was perfect. DO NOT MISS LIST South By South West Music Conference The 27 th South by South West (SXSW) Music and Media Conference will be held in Austin on March 8- 17. Thi s conference has the reputation of being the biggest and most anticipated convergence of all things musical. By day, thousands of conference registrants will network the halls of the Austin Convention Center while doing business at the SXSW Trade Show, sit in on informative panel discussions featuring some of the industry’s key players, listen to the insight of legendary keynote speakers while they plan out their night time party schedules of hundreds upon hundreds of musical acts from around the globe on over one hundred stages in downtown Austin. According to their website, “The music event has grown from 700 registrants in 1987 to over 16,000 registrants. As Austin has grown and diversified, film companies and high- tech companies have played a major role in the Austin and the Texas economies. In 1994, SXSW added a film and interactive component to accommodate these growth industries. SXSW Film and SXSW Interactive events together attract approximately 32,000 registrants to Austin every March. SXSW’s original goal was to create an event that would act as a tool for creative people and the companies they work with to develop their careers, to bring together people from a wide area to meet and share ideas.” You do the math… The cost of a SXSW Music Badge goes from $625 to $795 depending on how early you register. To buy a Platinum Badge, which is an all access pass, prices begins at $1150 and go to $1595 depending on how early you register. It’s sure grown from when I used to attend it throughout the 90’s and it only cost a few hundred dollars to attend. We thought that was high even back then. Multiply 16,000 people times $1595 and, well, I’d say this has turned out to be a worth while endeavor. I know the city of Austin is pretty happy about it. In all the times I attended SXSW as either a talent buyer, a venue operator, a booking agent or a music writer, I was never convinced that I actually profited that greatly from the experience. The return on investment was debatable although the parties were world class. The Back Porch re-opens in one week… Here we go everybody… hold on tight! Exactly one week from today, on Thursday, March 7 th , the Back Porch Bar in Port A will re-open for the 2013 season. This noteworthy event is followed closely by Spring Break and St. Patty’s Day. Our old friend, Davin James (Houston, TX), has the honors of being the first band to play the Porch for the season (Friday, March 8 th ). Davin has played there many, many times and his down home style of country music is always a treat. And on Saturday, the 9 th , another old friend, Mike Blakely y los Yahoos (Marble Falls, TX) will perform. Blakely is a celebrated author and musician who helps define the real Texas Country Music sound. On the following weekend, Matt Wayne and Company (Ft. Worth, TX) will play (Thursday, March 14 th ). This will be the official Spring Break kick-off and our favorite son, Cody Angel, just happens to be the featured lead guitarist for this band. This show should be nuts! Then on Friday, the 15 th , the big ten piece horn fueled party band, Cruise Control (Corpus Christi, TX) will bring us some funky, funky dance tunes. This is one of the Porch’s favorite bands who will play throughout the season. And finally on Saturday, March 16 th , the upwardly mobile Six Market Boulevard (Stephenville, TX) brings there own version of Americana meets Soul to the house. This is a great line-up to put the Porch in motion. On the remaining two weekends in March, look for local songbird, Melissa Brooke (Port Aransas, TX), Scarecrow People (Corpus Christi, TX), Kevin Higgins & Barbara Malteze (of the Dust Devils) and guitar wizard, Ruben V (San Antonio, TX). And in April, keep you eye out for some real surprises like Moon Light Social and Della Mae. Gimme that Old Time Religion… I am in the process of helping my friend, Father James Derkits, of the Trinity by the Sea Episcopal Church in Port A, to assemble a sunrise musical performance on Easter Sunday at Robert’s Point Park. James’ idea is to combine some morning church type musicians that already play regularly at his church with some night time string band type musicians to perform old timey gospel hymns together like “I’ll Fly Away” for the service. I have enlisted the excellent capabilities of Steve Goldstein (acoustic guitar, mandolin and vocals) and Crawford Brown (stand-up bass and vocals) from the Get Off the Lawn band and the beautiful voice of Dennis Sullivan. Stay tuned. I think this could turn into something very cool. Email me if you are a musician who would like to get involved in this project. A fiddle and dobro player would be great.
