A 18 Island Moon March 14, 2013 Lisabellas Bistro & Bar Celebrating Coastal Cuisine 361-749-4222 Open Monday - Saturday at 5:00 pm Casual Dining at it’s Finest Scarecrow People March 9, 14 & 16 By Ronnie Narmour [email protected] Came on vacation… left on probation. Well, the big news around here this week has been police domination at spring break. You can’t swing a cat with hitting a cop. And not only did they come in mass (and I do mean mass), they also came in every cop variation imaginable, short of the National Guard. Currently, we have city, county, state and federal peace officers swarming Port A like angry hornets. Homeland Security was seen searching cars on the ferry, dressed in tactical gear and toting machine guns. And, from what I’ve observed, the “Bully of the Week Award” goes to the Department of Public Safety (DPS) who seem to be trying to set a world’s record for most arrests in the shortest amount of time. They appear to be absolutely everywhere and are pulling people over for the slightest infractions. I’ve heard horror stories from friends who have been stopped and searched because their front bumper was over the crosswalk line at a stop sign or they didn’t turn their blinker on quick enough before they turned. I’ve also heard several citizens voice concerns about the unsafe manner that these out of town police are driving in our town. They have been seen speeding repeatedly in highly populated areas on the beach and city streets. I know there was at least one wreck where a DPS officer made a U-turn in front of a SUV on 361. Who does police the police? I’ve talked to several city leaders who are understandably perplexed at this situation. They see what’s going on but there’s really nothing they can do. They don’t have the authority to tell state of federal cops how to conduct themselves. Mayor Keith McMullen did tell me that he plans to have a conversation with City Manager, Dave Parsons to address this situation before the 2014 Spring Break. When I asked my editor, “who does police the police?” his reply was, ‘We do … the news media.” I want to know who ordered this directive and why. I’ve driven down the beach many times this week and am aware of how many kids there are out there… thousands of them. The situation needs to have police supervision and a lot of it. Anything could happen, especially when you add booze and hormones to the mix. Every year there are senseless fights and idiotic behavior that requires police attention, but that shouldn’t make it right to subject EVERYONE in their path to such aggressive scrutiny from these state troopers, all in the name of spring break mania. Look, I’m all for police protection and support them one hundred per cent in any attempt to serve the public when legitimately needed, they have a hard, thankless job. But these strong arm tactics by out of town cops are killing the goose that laid the golden egg. Every business owner I’ve talked to is both horrified and angry. And just to be clear, this column is editorial. I am giving MY opinion only here. Let me know what you think. My, My, My, It’s My World… I also caught some good shows at the Tarpon Ice House last week. Carol Elliott’s performance on Friday had a couple of added attractions. Elliott has been conducting a songwriting class and two of her students, both Winter Texans; Colorado Bob Reed and Minnesota Betsy Bowen, performed the songs they had written for her class… a final exam of sorts. Bob’s wife Carolyn had also written a song for the class but wasn’t able to attend the performance so Bob played and sang her song, Dear John. All of the songs were delightful. I particularly enjoyed Bowen’s quizzical number, My My My, It’s My World where she asked for solutions to such worldly questions as, “How do dolphins kiss? Do breezes live in trees and can turtles swim in loops?” It was really special! We jammin’… The weekly jam at the Ice House last Sunday was killer. They had a number of great local musicians on hand including Dennis Sullivan, Tiffany Tuesday, Kit Gutherz, Jered Clark and James Derkit. These guys kept the ball rolling for four straight hours and, I must say, the music sounded great. I really recommend this event. It’s always fun and uplifting and anyone can get into the act. Giggity’s finally opens… Well Giggity’s finally opened their doors. You may remember the veil of secrecy that proprietor, Edwin Myers, wrapped around this place located in the flats area in Port. I couldn’t pull any information out of him… including when would the place open, what bands would be playing there and what kind of food would be served. I just happened to be going by the other night and it had people coming and going, so I figured, “Now I get my answers.” My first impression was that the joint looks great. It’s got a huge 80 foot bar in the middle of the room that’s as black and shiny as a brand new speed boat. It feels like a bar should feel… dark as a tomb but lighted in just the right places. The food is basically southern seafood… mostly fried stuff, Po Boy sandwiches, burgers and wings. I had the seafood platter and have no complaints there but watch out for those wings… you might need a fire extinguisher. They have a big TV complex behind the bar and a couple of pool tables plus one of those internet juke boxes that can play any song and the house sound system kicks. I can’t wait to hear a band in there. Three Way Street will play there this Friday. I liked it. It felt very comfortable. Well worth the wait. Congratulations Edwin, Amy, Howie and Blake… you’ve done a great job! DO NOT MISS LIST Spring Break Recommendations… Hold on to you hats folks, I’ve got a lot to tell you about.
