A 20 Island Moon April 18, 2013 Lisabellas Bistro & Bar Celebrating Coastal Cuisine 361-749-4222 Open Monday - Saturday at 5:00 pm Casual Dining at it’s Finest Nightly Seafood Specials By Ronnie Narmour [email protected] Island Moon Art Walk… The Island Moon Newspaper held its first Art Walk on Padre Island this weekend. We appreciate Stevie Start and Sky Malone for showing up and lending their ample musical talents to the cause. It was a very cool setting right on the seawall next to the Holiday Inn. We had a bunch of arts and crafts type vendors on hand and a really great Cajun food vendor. I really had a lot of fun. BTW, you can catch Stevie any Saturday night at the Coast Club. He’s a great one man show and really pumps it out on piano and guitar. Moon Light Social played Back Porch… I caught a couple of cool shows last Friday night in Port A. Moon Light Social (Austin, TX) played the Porch. This was a fusion of alt rock and country with the boy-girl harmonies of Jeremy Burchard and Jennica Scott. I really liked them. They were young fresh faces with a new slant on an old theme. Their female drummer was spot on, too. This show was a little different from what the Back Porch usually does, but I’m glad it got slipped in. It was a nice change. They were one of those super cool Austin bands that not many people have heard of but are really good. New venue coming to Port A… I spoke to ex- Lug Nutz proprietor Sean Etheridge last week and it seems he’s passed all the obstacles involved in opening his new club, Stingrays, to be located in the same location next to The Gaff. His main problem, initially, was getting the city to sign off on his lack of parking. But, he struck a deal with the High School to use the parking on Beach Street, which is the perimeter of the tennis courts and track. Etheridge is shooting for an opening some time in August. He told me that he wants to be open for football season and plans to feature a large variety of draft beers. Let’s hope live music is in the mix, too. Bottlehead Miller tribute scheduled… My friend, L. Leon Sands, who is a great guitarist and artist, has been busy organizing a tribute to Dave “Bottlehead” Miller, who recently passed away. Miller was an island fixture and played music in this area for many years. Originally from Ft. Worth, he resided in Rockport until his death. Sands has teamed up with Tarpon Ice House owner, Paul Fain, and will hold this event on Saturday, May 11 th at 5 pm. This will give them time to assemble many of the musicians that used to play with Bottlehead through the years, including drummer Kris Vanderkohn. There will also be a silent auction to help Miller’s daughter, Riley with some of the medical bills that she inherited. Mark this one on your calendar folks, it will definitely be a goodern! Della Mae rips the head off of Port A… Della Mae (Boston, MA) played the Back Porch last Saturday night. Bands like this really make my job easy… there’s so much to say about them. They are an all female bluegrass ensemble that can flat play the bejeezus out of every song they do. All the musicians were hand picked by the founder, Kimber Ludiker, a two- time national fiddling champion. She explains, “The identity that we’ve developed as a band is a melting pot of our different personalities and backgrounds”. Singer Celia Woodsmith comes from a blues/rock background, guitarist Courtney Hartman studied at Berklee College of Music, bassist Shelby Means played with various bands in Nashville, and mandolin player Jenni Lyn Gardner was schooled in traditional bluegrass. The energy coming off of the Back Porch stage could have powered a small city. Every song they played was pedal to the metal, foot stompin’, yee-haw yellin’ magic. Smitten? Yes I’m smitten. These girls are the hottest thing I’ve seen… maybe ever! The last time I was this fired up was after seeing the Dirty River Boys. It’s easy to see why Della Mae is becoming such an international sensation. I can see them getting Dixie Chick big. BTW, they loved us here in Port A. I sat next to their merch table and watched a long line of new fans stand in line to offer them sailing trips, lighthouse tours, fishing trips, you name it. Every single one of these gals has star quality. I suspect the next time I see them will be in some huge festival or arena somewhere for huge money. I’m glad I was lucky enough to catch them on their way up. Whew!!! What a show! What a band! Oh, and they told us my new favorite banjo joke: why are there no banjos on Star Trek? Because its in the future. DO NOT MISS LIST The Krayolas to play Back Porch… For my money, the show to catch this weekend will be The Krayolas (San Antonio, TX) at the Back Porch on Saturday. This is what The Ramones would sound like if the were from Westside San Antonio. Their frontman, H e c t o r Saldana , embodies cool. Heck, their spiffy outfits are worth the price of admission. Hector weighed in, “The Krayolas are pumped to come back to Port A.  We’re bringing in the fun, stripped- down powerpop, folk and Tex- Mex rock ‘n’ roll sound featured on our new album ‘Caninca’ which is getting great spins on Sirius XM and some East Coast FM radio stations thanks to a bilingual remix of the Ramones ‘I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend.’ You gotta come out – if only for the suits. The album is free on Amazon right now, too.”  Lots of great options this weekend… Today, Thursday, April 25 t h , Antone Perez and the All Stars will play Giggity’s and the Gypsy Kings will be at Concrete Street. On Friday, April 26 th , catch real-deal bluesman, J.T. Coldfire (Austin, TX) at Giggity’s, teenage powerhouse, Samantha Aiken & Rodeo Drive at the Coast Club. I should mention a little number called SandFest will bring some 100,000 people to town. I’ll be working the music tent again this year with my pal, Janet Planet and her famous mountain of jello shots. Look for Hy Eddlemann, Raenne & the Ride, The Ones, Cord Carpenter, Flatbroke, Rich Lockhart, Melissa Brooks, Palipha Starry Band and the Real Life Band over the three day weekend. Be forewarned, this will be the mother of all traffic jams. On Saturday, April 27 th , Houston Marchman will bring their veteran Americana to the Porch, Lela Caldwell’s wild Purple Monkey Laser show is at Shorty’s. Rich Lockhart is at Giggity’s and the funky Latin rockers Vallejo (Austin, TX) is at the Executive Surf Club in Corpus. Also on the 27 th , the Felder Art Gallery will be having an art exhibit of original works by Wade Koniakowsky, Glenn Francis, and John Cobb from 5-9. Harpist, Stephanie Nash-Prichett, will provide entertainment… that’s right I said harpist. Check out the LIVE MUSIC TONIGHT schedule at the bottom of the page for even more options.
