A 16 Island Moon January 17, 2013 By Ronnie Narmour [email protected] Hardcore Troubadour… I just read Steve Earle’s candid biography, Hardcore Troubadour, The Life and Near Death of Steve Earle.. The book holds back no punches and dives into his early years in San Antonio, Austin, Houston and Nashville and his overnight success after “Guitar Town”, his scrapes with the law, his serious drug addictions and eventual recovery. There were several incidents reflecting the seven degrees of separation in my life where our paths might have easily passed in San Antonio and Austin in the 70’s when he was running around with Townes Van Zandt. Turns out he opened many times for Townes at Castle Creek in Austin, which was located directly next door to the Texas Chili Parlour where I worked as a bartender. We would often go over to Townes’ house after the shows, drink and play craps and music ‘til all hours. Earle talked about those times in the book. I’ve been a serious fan of Steve Earle’s since the first time I heard him and found this book to be fascinating. In a world consumed with creative genius, he was definitely his own worst enemy. I’ve known a lot of drug addicts in my time, but Earle’s story is about the ugliest I’ve ever heard. He’s a man that saw life from the glamorous top as a rock star who played arenas and stadiums with the likes of Bob Dylan and to the skid row bottom as a hopeless junkie and crack head in Nashville and Los Angeles. He pissed away several fortunes on drugs after Copperhead Road went multi-platinum and at one point was paying out $8000 a month in child support and alimony to his three children and five ex-wives. The strength of his family and a few friends (and twelve steps) is the only reason that Steve Earle is alive today. Earle is an amazing man with strong, heartfelt convictions. His poetic genius is touched only by the songwriters that mentored him: Townes and Guy Clark. I was both enamored and disgusted as I read this book. It’s very graphic and not for the faint of heart. I couldn’t put it down. Stevie Start/ Samantha Aiken Joe Webb over at the Coast Club in Port A has started doing some live music on the weekends, again. He’s got my boy, Stevie Start (N. Padre Island, Tx) playing every Saturday night and is testing the waters with a local songbird, Samantha Aiken (Corpus Christi, TX). I caught both their shows last weekend. Stevie recently moved to the area from New York where he owned and operated several recording studios, as well as fronted a popular cover band, The Boomchasers, which opened for Marshall Crenshaw and Loudon Wainwright III at such noteworthy venues as CBGB’s and The Bitter End. He’s one well rounded musician who plays guitar, bass, keys, and drums. His repertoire runs the gamut from 80’s rock (Billy Joel, etc.) to contemporary folk (Steve Earle, Townes Van Zandt, etc.) and his stuff is really engaging. Though he’s performing as a solo act for these shows, Stevie more than fills the room and seems right at home at the Coast Club. Samantha Aiken may still be in high school, but you’d never know that by watching her on stage. She’s poised and vibrant, playing an array of contemporary pop songs, which the crowd seemed to know all the words to. (I need to listen to more radio, I guess.) She filled up the dance floor and held the crowd… I’d say she did a good job. Chris Jordan & Reeve Allen reunite with City Crew… It was good to see the boys back together last Friday at the Flat’s Lounge in Port A, when Ray T and the City Crew (Aransas Pass, TX) welcomed back ex-pats Chris Jordan (bass) and Reeve Allen (drums). Jordan moved to Martindale in the U.S. Virgin Islands last year to open a large restaurant and bar (The Comanche Club). Jordan was the original owner of the Flat’s and was in town for a memorial for his good friend, Tiddle Caylor. Reeve relocated to Austin for unknown reasons. The band sounded great. This configuration is perhaps the tightest unit Ray T has assembled. It felt like old home week and the capacity crowd truly enjoyed the reunion. There was a lot of back slapping going on that night. DO NOT MISS LIST Pat Green Texas country music star, Pat Green, will play Brewster Street Ice House tonight, Thursday, January 17 th . Curtis Grimes will open the show. Tickets are $20 advanced and $25 at the door. This is an “all ages” show. Music starts at 9:00 pm. Bring a shoe horn, without a doubt, this show will be packed out. The 40 year old Green was born in San Antonio, raised in Waco and schooled in Lubbock, where he got his start in the bars around Texas Tech. This Texan is a favorite son and can pretty much fill any sized room (or field) he chooses to play. His music has been produced by the master, Lloyd Maines, and boasts eleven recordings since 1995. Green has sold more than 250,000 records worldwide. He’s toured with such luminaries as Willie Nelson, Keith Urban, Gretchen Wilson and Kenny Chesney. His 2003 release, Wave on Wave went gold. I booked Green a couple of times at my club in San Antonio (The Lab) back in 2000- 2001 when his career was just getting started good. Believe me, he wasn’t cheap even back then. I had him play on our outdoor stage and sold about 600 tickets at $20 each when Code Compliance stopped by after his first set. It wasn’t the first time those guys had graced my presence with noise complaints and they shut the show down without debate. I remember standing at the gate handing out ten dollar bills to a really disgruntled crowd as they left. That’s all I recollect about the show… I lost my butt. I bet Brewster will do pretty well tonight. Pat Green is money in the bank these days. Bob Schneider Austin’s darling bad boy, Bob Schneider will play Brewster Street Ice House on January 26 th . Tickets are $17.50 advanced and $20 at the door. This is an “all ages” show. Schneider first came on the scene in Austin with a series of bands that won the hearts of the entire female population: Joe Rockhead, The Ugly Americans, The Scabs, Lonelyland . At one point he was the talk of the town when Sandra Bullock decided to call him honey. I remember going to any number of shows in Austin at Antones, Saxon Pub, La Zona Rosa, etc where you had better get there early if you wanted to get in. He was, and is, one hot ticket. His boyish good looks with just the tale tale signs of a demon realized, combined with his X rated lyrics regarding his sexual prowess, are usually enough to get any sized bevy of gals frothing. In short, this dude is one chick magnet. His music goes from funk to rock to Latin tinged to even ballads. He’s won 25 “Best of” Austin Music Awards from 1999 until 2010 in such categories as Band of the Year, Musician of the Year, Song of the Year, Album of the Year, Male Vocalist of the Year, Songwriter of the Year, Producer of the Year… you get the picture, he runs the show in Austin. He’s played a regular Monday night gig at the Saxon Pub for something like 12 years. They even have all “Lonelyland” karaoke nights. My favorite incantation of Schneider is The Scabs, his ultra-cocky twelve piece big horn band. Talk about girls gone wild! I’m truly glad that Corpus has embraced Bob Schneider… just for the residuals. Go see this show and tell me I’m not spot on here. And that’s the truth!
