SUMMER SPORTS START IN THE SPRING

The Softball and Baseball teams started working out on Sunday’s well over a month ago. Voluntary hitting, pitching and throwing work outs have been offered to athletes hoping to get a jump on the approaching season. Last week both teams picked up another evening, softball on Tuesday and Baseball on Thursday. Improvements are made in the off season, we should be in for another great year. Below left, Senior’s Kolton Markley, Brandon Noggle and Tyler Stewart lead stretches. In the center, Coach Zaruba works with Chrissie Hoogland on her leap from the mound. Below right, Senior Leanna Mysak takes some batting practice.

THE FAMOUS AMONG US… OR SOMETHING LIKE THAT

Every now and then there is a fan, coach, parent or even an athlete who catches my eye and reminds me of someone. This week, Springville Senior Alex Barner is our newest man of fame. He could be the stand in for funny man Jack Black don’t you think?

NICK MERRITT NAMED TRI-RIVER’S CONFERENCE COACH OF THE YEAR

Recognition isn’t what it’s all about, but when it happens, it sure is nice isn’t it? Springville Boy’s basketball coach Nick Merritt was selected as the Tri-River’s West Coach of the Year this season. After coaching his team to a conference championship and leading a group of players who dominate the quik stats columns, it is an added bonus to tell you that not only did 4 boys receive All-Conference honors, their Coach did as well. Merritt has been coaching since his teaching days at Green Mountain Garwin where he was a JV and Assistant Varsity Coach. His career record while here at Springville took a big jump this year and rests at 58-78, until next season that is. Merritt, a standout player and Springville Legend, is pictured to the right. He graduated from Springville in 2001 before becoming a UNI Panther where he pursued his Undergraduate degree. Congratulations Coach Merritt...And by the way—Next season? It’s only 250 days away—November 17th. Let’s Go O’s! (Oriole Pride thanks Pam Nissen & Marcia Hughes for their research as they retrieved this photo from the archives)

TRACK TEAMS KICK OFF THE SEASON INDOORS

While temperatures are finally staying on the plus side, this year’s track team was no doubt happy to have their first event indoors. Wartburg College hosted a large co-ed meet on Tuesday, 33 boys teams and 20 girls teams in all classes attended the evening competition. Coach Steve Pershing is back for another season in and out of the oval to lead the girls squad that is loaded with talent, some new and some returning. He said that some of the notable performances in this first outing included, “Ashlee Bell threw 26' 8.5" in the shot put, Ashley Brady ran 10.14 in the 55 hurdles, the 4x800 relay team of Olivia Dlouhy, Hallie Corum, Sophie Stolte, and Katelyn Gloeckner finished 8th in 11:43, the Distance Medley relay team of Ashley Brady, Daisha Hall, Tracy Kilburg, and Katelyn Gloeckner finished 7th in 4:48.3 and the 4x200 relay team of Chrissy Hoogland, Tracy Kilburg, Kerrigan Riley, and Daisha Hall finished a close 3rd in 1:54.86. The boys track team is under new guidance this year as first year teacher Tyler Husak has taken the reigns of a squad similar to the girls, plenty of talent, new and returning. “We went in excited, ready to compete, and ready to see where we were at this early part of the season” he said. Mentionable performances include Senior, Elias Nissen finishing 7th in the 55 meter dash. Freshman Sam Lorimer ran the 2 mile in 11:29.21, finishing second in his heat and 16th overall. Coach Husak said “Sophomore Max Boland had a goal this year to break 1 minute for the 400 and he ran 59.97 finishing 17 out of 45 runners. Now that he has completed that early goal I'm challenging him to eventually get to 57”. He added, “our freshmen distance medley team of Seth Blake, Caleb Mason, Tucker Nelson, and Sam Lorimer ran 4:29.27, which was 3 seconds off of the best D-Med time from last years' team, and our 4x400 me-ter team of Matt Carson, Andrew Blakely, Andrew Lorimer, and Derek Hanshaw ran 4:19.50, also just 3 seconds off of the best 4x400 time from last years' team”. Both teams have a couple weeks of practice before they compete in Cascade on April 3.

CRAZY MASCOT OF THE WEEK Rennsselaer, New York is home to Doane Stuart School, an independent, Co-educational school with 125 students in their Upper School (grades 9-12). Their athletic teams include soccer, swimming, track and field as well as crew, and they feature intramural programs in fencing, yoga and frisbee. Their mascot is the Thunder Chicken, and the closest thing to an explanation for it is that the Headmaster reports that a chicken is something that all students, elementary through high school can cheer for. Well, I guess you can’t disagree. Their teams wear the colors of navy blue and forest green and I wouldn’t be surprised if their fight song is The Chicken Dance!

WEEKLY PICKS CONTEST… This week we turn to the NBA for match-ups:

Milwaukee at New York Sacramento at Chicago Boston at New Orleans Sacramento at Minnesota Here’s what you do, make your picks and for the Tie-Breaker, who wins the Men’s Big Ten tournament? Make your picks and email us at [email protected] Last week we had a tie between Rylee Menster and Joe Martin who were both 3 of 4 and even on the tie breaker. Thanks for playing and have a great week.

SCRIVER ADVANCES IN TITAN’S QB CHALLENGE Springville standout Sam Scriver competed in the Cedar Rapids Titans Quarterback Challenge last Saturday and was flawless, earning a perfect score to beat his opponent from Kennedy High School. Contestants start on the goal line, sprint to the 10 yard line, are handed a ball they are expected to throw through the uprights and then sprint to the 20 yard line and continue. Points are earned for accuracy as well as speed. Scriver hit all 5 passes and capped it with a sprint to the end zone—his time? 33 seconds. He advances to the next round on May 3rd with a trip to the finals on the line. Winners receive a $500 scholarship, a Titans Jersey and a $250 donation to their school’s athletic program. Way to go Sam—maybe they’ll ask you to try out for the Titans too(?).(photo courtesy of RKN Photography)
