We here at Oriole Pride were probably more excited than most. A glance at the program showed girls who will play softball in the fall at Universities like Minnesota, Drake, UNI, Minnesota State, Mississippi State and Iowa. Grand View, Wartburg, Central, Indian Hills, DMACC and Kirkwood rounded out the list of schools that Monday’s players will be attending. 39 girls played on 3 teams, Kerrigan played for the white team, and there were few girls from this side of the state. Mallory Madsen (who will play at Indian Hills) of Solon and Katie Sommers (who will play basketball & softball at Wartburg) of Linn Mar, both played with Riley’s White team. Besides a Muscatine and an Albia player, teams were made up of Des Moines area girls as well as those on the Western Side of Interstate 35. Also playing was Dallas Center Grimes pitcher Paige Lowary who will throw for Missouri next year. No disrespect intended here, but you do NOT see that kind of pitching in the Tri-Rivers, or 1A for that matter. It was a great afternoon, Riley’s team lost the opener to the Red, 9-1 but rebounded to beat the Blue, 3-1 in the night cap. Riley played short stop in both games and was flawless. Congratulations Kerrigan as well as Coaches Denny Zaruba and Christina Zaruba. This is a great tribute to the program as only 5 girls are selected from a 1A school. Elias undoubtedly had a great experience and he finally got his feet wet on a field that will be his home for the next 5 years (he’ll redshirt this upcoming season). While his team, the North, took one on the chin, losing 23-7, the score is less important than the mission. The Shrine Bowl raises funds for their Children’s Hospitals that provide medical assistance to those in need. NISSEN DEBUTS AT TIGHT END IN SHRINE BOWL

It has consumed my thoughts all week—where will they play Elias in the Shrine Bowl? He lit up state statistics as a running back here at Springville. He was signed by UNI to play Tight End for the Panthers—so what were we going to see on Saturday? Was he going to carry the ball? Or catch the ball? Or was he to be the decoy? The answer? LADY ORIOLE BASKETBALL TEAM HOOPS IT UP

Head Coach Nate Sanderson reports that the Lady O’s have played close to a full season of games in just 2 weeks of various camps in July. Cornell, Maquoketa Valley, Springville and Drake were all the locations and the girls made their mark at every one. Playing 23 games between those four locales, the girls finished with an impressive 19-4 record! Notably, the girls have been playing without the talents of Megan Wagaman who is out with a broken pinky. Coach Sanderson kept her involved however as he reports she coached the girls in a Drake match-up with Martensdale St. Marys—Wags called all the shots; she managed the game, substituted players and the Lady O’s came out on top with a 44-38 win. The JV teams played in 2 camps, Cornell and Springville, and they came out with a record of 7-4. There are 8 incoming freshmen this year, and Coach noted that this years Basketball College had 18 participants—the most since his arrival. Once again sports fans, we have a lot of excitement to look forward to. Go O’s! (Photo courtesy of Angie Gloeckner)

ORIOLE BOYS BASKETBALL TEAM HEADS NORTH...

Head Boys coach Nick Merritt and Assistant Coach Donovan Eastburn took a group of Oriole Cagers to NIACC in Mason City for a week long camp filled with basketball games, 24/7. The boys took off Sunday Morning and will return this afternoon. After 4 days of non-stop basketball action they should gain skills of course but also begin to learn how to play with each other. You may recall, seven seniors graduated after a 21-2 season. Coach Merritt has new tools for his arsenal and it will be a lot of fun to watch. (Picture courtesy of Alexis Hulett)

KATELYN GLOECKNER RUNS THE BIX 7

How does a 7 mile run sound on a Saturday morning? In July? In Iowa? I know—I know... CRAZY! Well we’ve heard the saying, runners kind of dance to their own beat, but with all kidding aside, local talent Katelyn Gloeckner, a freshman soon to be sophomore who made her mark last year on the Cross Country and Track circuits, continues to stride for more. Gloeckner, along with her Aunt, Cindy McCarthy, ventured down to the Quad Cities to run in the annual race and they clocked in with a finish time of 1 hour and 33 minutes. McCarthy is training for a marathon in Minnesota, and on Gloeckner’s plate yet for this summer are the Springville Quarry Run (a 6k) and then the NewBo 10k toward the end of August. Us non-runners will stick to the cheering section…but Katelyn? You go girl! (Pictured to the left are Gloeckner and McCarthy and to the right is Gloeckner—we thank Cindy McCarthy for the photos)

CALLING ALL RACERS...

Not only is this a great race and unique in its own way, it is a great cause and they raised over $4,000 last year for SANSI. 180 runners participated in its inaugural run in 2013. Plan to come on out and watch the race, or perhaps volunteer or better yet—register and see how you do! If you have questions you can call Joel Rochleau at 319-854-7050 or email him at [email protected] Pictured to the right is Megan, Russ and Madi Wagaman in last years race, courtesy of Dee Wagaman.

CRAZY THINGS I SEE...

Facebook is an amazing thing—and because of it I knew that the Hoogland family is on vacation. Well imagine my surprise in Waukee on Monday when I looked to my left and saw this gentleman. I thought it was John Hoogland in the flesh—he even had the Oriole colors on!

ORIOLE FOOTBALL CAMP OPENS UP NEXT WEEK

Let the countdown begin football fans. The O’s open up in 30 days on Allison Field when Meskwaki comes to town and preparation begins on Monday. The boys start off the 2014 campaign with their annual camp which will run all week from 7 to 9am and 4 to 6pm each day. We should see many new looks this fall as 11 Seniors left the program. Coach Martin and his staff will have a new bag with new tricks and it should be another great season of Friday Night Football.

CRAZY MASCOT OF THE WEEK There’s some pretty unique mascots out there, this week we travel to Metairie, Louisiana to look at Archbishop Chapelle High School. A Catholic, all female, secondary school, they compete as “Chipmunks”. 800 students attend the school and their colors are green and white. The girls compete in the usual athletic events as well as swimming, golf and tennis. Why a chipmunk? We really can’t say, however, besides being cute, chipmunks are known to be ferocious. After all, they don’t exclusively eat nuts and berries. They’re know to eat frogs and worms too.

ALLSUP WRAPS UP SOCCER CAREER AT STATE

Oriole Senior Brian Allsup and his leg dazzled all of 8 Man football last season, with his touch backs, field goals, PAT’s and punts that pinned the opponent on their own 2 yard line. Brian is also a premier soccer player for the Linn-Mar Lions. The Lions qualified for state last June, their first trip back since 2008. The Lions won the Valley Division championship and finished 4th in the state with an 18-5 record. Allsup heads off to UNI this fall where he plans to walk on as a kicker for the Panther football team. I predict we’ll be seeing more of him in a different uniform—they’ll be impressed like the rest of us. Brian is the son of Tina and Preston—congratulations!

(Oriole Pride thanks Tina Allsup for the photo)
