You’re Going, Any Road Will Take You There”

THE RACE IS ON—ORIOLE BASEBALL IN THE THICK OF IT

It’s no secret that Springville has the most accomplished group of athletes that the school has seen in several seasons. Success has been the norm this year and while there have always been top performers, this year features so many that winning is the new word among any Oriole sports fan. Head Baseball Coach Tony Dlouhy is reaping his own rewards this summer after a year of great football, basketball and track seasons ended with notable finishes. The Orioles are at 8-2 in the Tri Rivers conference, even with Maquoketa Valley and Midland and right behind leader Alburnett. Some big showdowns were rescheduled this week after the rain interfered on Monday with Midland and looks to do the same with the Pirates. That means next week will be a biggie and the boys will be poised to make their move. Last week the O’s hosted Easton and picked them apart in game 1, ending it early 13-3. Christian Goad lit up the Riverhawks for 3 hits including a double and 3 RBI, Trevor Hulett and Elias Nissen added 2 hits each including a double for both. Kolton Markley got the win fanning 7. Game 2 was a bit of a different story and the O’s dropped a heart breaker in the bottom of the 7th, losing 4-3. It was tied 3-3 and Easton was able to get a guy on, advance him to 3rd and score him on an Oriole miscue. Greg Pauly was tagged for the loss, he struck out 1 and gave up just 3 hits on the night. Cody Blake had a triple for the O’s and Pauly helped his cause with a double. The boys turned around on Friday to take on Cascade for a non-conference battle with the 12-3 Cougars. It wasn’t pretty as the O’s failed to find their way home, managing 5 hits but not advancing any of them. They dropped the road game 10-0, Goad took the loss, giving up 10 hits and Peter Brooks came in for the relief, giving up another 2 hits to the Cougars who jumped out and led 6-0 after 3 innings of play.

Foul weather has prevented the guys from hitting the field sinc. Monday’s games against Midland were cancelled as will, most likely, Thursday’s match-up with Alburnett. What we can expect next week is a whole lot of baseball. On Monday, they’ll head to Clinton to take on Prince of Peace and Thursday they’ll host Central City and in between they’ll make up the Alburnett games Wednesday. No need to go grocery shopping, your meals will be at a ball diamond some where—keep the lawn chair handy so you can cheer on the O’s.

LADY O’S SHOW THEIR PROMISE—TAKE 3RD AT ANAMOSA

Oh what a difference a week makes. After talking about the softball team and their inability to score—the Orioles redeemed themselves with a convincing sweep of Easton, 10-4 and 10-3. They dropped a tough loss to Cascade, 6-5 on Friday but rebounded on Saturday at the Anamosa tournament winning 2 and losing 1. Saturday they won the opener against East Buchanan, 11-0, fell to West Liberty 7-3 and then pummeled Cascade 10-1 to take 3rd in the 8 team, one day tourney. Against Easton, Kerrigan Riley was a perfect 4 for 4 including a double and Samantha Fitzgerald was 3 for 4 with a double of her own. Tracy Kilburg fanned 4 from the circle and got the opening win for the O’s. In game 2 it was more of the same. Riley was 2 for 4 with another double and Sarah Matus and Kilburg had 2 hits each, one a double for Kilburg. Chrissie Hoogland threw 6 innings for Springville, sitting down 4 and allowing 5 hits. Kilburg closed it out in the 7th inning, striking out 2 for the save. Friday, the girls played well enough to stay in the game but not good enough to win. They struggled defensively, allowing 3 runs in the 1st inning and then another 3 over the next 2 innings to fall behind 6-3 after three. They tallied a run in the 5th and 6th innings but that was all they could manage and lost it 6-5. Fitzgerald was 3 for 3, all doubles and Daisha Hall re-entered the batting order and was 2 for 3 in her return. On Saturday, the girls opened up the Anamosa tournament with a solid rout of East Buchanan, ending it early by a score of 11-0. All 9 batters had at least 1 hit in the game and they were led again by Riley who was 4 for 4. Hall added 3 hits and Fitzgerald 2. Leanna Mysak also had 2 hits and Hoogland threw just a 2 hitter against the Bucs, striking out 4. Game 2 was against West Liberty, the O’s scored right away but then not again until the 6th, falling 7-3. Youngster Olivia Dlouhy pitched the game and fanned 2 in clutch situations. Riley led the O’s with 2 hits in that game.

With a long break in between game 2 and 3, you’d think the girls would come out flat and tired. Springville was anything but-they came out on fire, jumping out to a 3-0 lead and building on it as they scored every inning with the exception of the 5th. Riley continued her streak, going 3 for 4 including an in the park home run. Fitzgerald, Mysak, Rylee Menster and Ashlee Goad also had 2 hits in the 10-1 rout. Hoogland returned to the circle for the O’s and got the 10-1 win. Next up for the Orioles will be Lisbon this evening and Alburnett on Thursday, weather permitting of course. Monday’s games against Midland were called because of rain and they’ll be made up next Wednesday. At 9-8 overall but 5-3 in conference play, the girls like the boys are in the thick of it. Key games are on tap for next week, with 5:00 start times, you have the best reason in town to leave work early—your Lady O’s are hitting .307 and averaging 8 runs a game over the past 6 outings. Add to the equation some pretty solid defense and the girls are right in the mix of things.

Clockwise from above right; Sidney Hopkins nearly makes the play of the year. The Lady O’s celebrate a 3rd place finish Saturday as well as a Kerrigan Riley home run. Riley shows her form in a 4-4 game against East Buchanan. Ashley Bell, a lefty behind the plate has the intimidating stance any runner would fear.

Wednesday, June 18, 2014, Oriole Pride 3 YOUTH TEAMS FILL THE DIAMONDS

Oh to be young again. Ranging in grades Kindergarten through 6th, Springville has a total of seven teams competing in and out of city limits in baseball and softball this summer. Add to that the Middle School, JV and Varsity teams and there is simply no way you can’t find entertainment each night of the week. Oriole Pride thanks the community for responding with so many examples of Little O’s building new traditions...

SCRIVER TAKES 2ND IN QUARTERBACK CHALLENGE It all came down to the long pass and CR Prairie QB Derreck Fye edged out Oriole QB Sam Scriver to win the Cedar Rapids Titans Quarterback Challenge. In front of a full house as you can see in the photo to the left, the boys performed passing challenges as they battled for a $500 scholarship sponsored by Collins Community Credit Union and the CR Titans club. Sam has been bringing added PR to Springville for many years with his athletic accomplishments and it is only fitting to end his prep career on a football field while wearing Oriole gear. Con-gratulation Sam!

JUNIOR VARSITY SOFTBALL & BASEBALL—HIGH EXPECTATIONS

It doesn’t seem fair—the varsity teams get all the attention right? This year especially with the added playoff and post season action we’ve all enjoyed, it’s easy to remain focused on the Junior’s and Senior’s. Well we didn’t get to this point without success in the younger programs and that remains true for the JV teams. While most of their games are on “off” nights for Varsity action, you’d be much impressed by their performances if you ventured out to catch a game or two. It is a great time to be an Oriole and that goes from Youth Sport teams up through the ranks of the Junior Varsity squads.
