BASEBALL HONORS START TO ROLL IN

ALL STATE SOFTBALL NODS ANNOUNCED

JOEL ROCHLEAU TAKES ON THE BIX 7

We told you a couple weeks ago about Springville sophomore Katelyn Gloeckner running the Bix in the Quad Cities back in July. Katelyn wasn’t the only local talent running that day, Oriole fan Joel Rochleau (pictured to the right, running in the Springville Quarry Run) ran it as well. He said he even rubbed elbows with Boston Marathon Champion Meb Keflezighi (pictured to the left) the evening before when picking up his race packet. And, he said he ran along with Katelyn and her Aunt Cindy (McCarthy). Thanks for sharing Joel!

The IGCA announced all state softball teams last week and the Lady O’s, after a 20 win season had 2 players make the listing. Senior Kerrigan Riley (pictured to the right) made a repeat appearance as she was a 1A Honorable Mention last year and this year was named to the All-State 2nd team. The Lady O spent all summer in the top 3 of Iowa softball batting averages across the classes, finishing the year at #3 with her .596 average, tallying 68 hits and stealing 36 bases. Riley will play for the Kirkwood Eagles in the fall. Samantha Fitzgerald (pictured below) earned an Honorable Mention bid for her senior year performance. Fitzgerald hit .415 this year and stole 27 bases from opponents. She will swim for Coe this fall.

Oh the crazy, hazy, lazy days of summer. Who can think of a better way to wrap up a summer break and kick off the back to school shopping bonanza than with 7am and 4pm work outs? Well that’s what our Oriole football squad and coaches did last week. Actually, the weather cooperated too so they were able to accomplish plenty without the hazards that heat can bring. It may be hard to believe sports fans but it is football season and we can’t wait to get it started. Stay tuned for the season preview, the O’s are back on Allison Field!

SPRINGVILLE QUARRY RUN OUTDOES ITSELF

Annual events are always wonderful to look forward to. Springville Quarry Run directors Rich Lorimer and Joel Rochleau put on quite a show last year with the race they put together. They didn’t do it alone, Jon Keizer, Rich Blakely, Wendling Quarry and City employees all contributed to the affair as well as countless community volunteers. Last weekend they held the 2nd race in as many years and they outdid what they accomplished in 2013. Last year? A pretty stellar 182 runners competed. This year? 248! Last year? They raised over $4,000 and donated it to the Springville Back Pack program. This year? They hope to hit $5,000. Outstanding results from outstanding efforts.

Top finishes were as follows: 1st in men’s; Nick Meyers Monticello, IA Time: 21:13 New course record (pictured right)! 1st in women’s: Brianne Cook Monticello, IA Time: 25:20 A new course female record! Top Springville finisher and 4th place overall: Sam Lorimer 23:20 (pictured left). Top female Springville finisher: 3rd place overall female: Katelyn Gloeckner 28:32 (Pictured below)

In the pictures to the far right above this text is Rich Lorimer who helped with this wonderful event. Below right is Rich Blakely, another helper awarding Oriole Lady O and Legend Katie Wyman. Below left is Jon Keizer as well as Karen and Travis Evens. Great Job!!!

LORIMER BOYS ATTEND WARTBURG CROSS COUNTRY CAMP

This fall should prove to be another great one for Oriole fans. Andrew Lorimer, a senior and younger brother Sam, a sophomore will both push each other during cross country season this fall and in doing so, they’ll once again be admirable representatives of the Springville Orioles. Both boys spent the last week of July at a camp at Wartburg College in Waverly learning from one of the college greats in Steve Johnson. Johnson has been at the helm of the Knights squad for what is about to be

his 26th year and he’s been named an Iowa Conference Coach of the Year a staggering 23 times. Andrew and Sam were 2 of nearly 150 runners, both male and female from mostly Iowa schools that attended the 4 day camp. They focused on racing strategies, injury prevention and goal setting and it ended with a 2 mile run in which campers were asked to predict their finish time. Sam finished just 40 seconds off his predicted time and Andrew was within 2! The boys learned a lot, had quite a bit of fun and even caught up with Abbie Fliehler, the once upon a time, Oriole track coach who is now with Starmont. Not a bad way to wrap up the month of July.

LADY ORIOLE VOLLEYBALL TEAM TAKES THEIR ANNUAL RETREAT

With the croaking of the locusts comes the feeling of fall and as much as it may pain us to think the summer is ending, we can at least be looking forward to volleyball season. The girls have been working hard all summer and they got a head start on the 2014 season with an overnight trip filled with bonding and goal setting activities. 26 girls took off from Springville at 6am on a Saturday and after spending all day and night in Indianola at Wesley Woods Retreat Camp, the team returned on Sunday at 7pm. New players, new goals and new opportunities are waiting. The Lady O’s are ready to make their mark and we can’t wait to watch it take shape. (Photo courtesy of Coach Howard)
