Petfinder happy tailNo shortage of
pets existed in the Be-gany household. TheTrumansburg, N.Y.,family had cats and, after the loss of theirbeloved old dog tocancer, they adopteda young Rottweiler. But Beth Begany wasmissing an “older, wiser” dog.
Shebegan lookingon Petfinder fora senior dog,one who stoodless chance offinding a home.“Then one day Isaw her – anolder, blind anddeaf Pekingesewho had beenabandoned byher previousowners during Hurri-cane Sandy,” Beganysays.
The dog, Kim-chi, was at an open-admission shelter inBergen County, N.J.Open admission shel-ters take in all animalsthat are brought tothem and, as a result,
are often over-crowded, especiallyafter a disaster.
Given Kimchi’sspecial needs, itseemed likely shewould be euthanized.Fortunately, shelterstry to find alternatives, and the staff learnedthat Kimchi had originally
been adopted fromRBARI (RamapoBergen AnimalRefuge, Inc.) in Oak-land N.J. The no-killfacility took the dog in.
They had faiththat even an old blind, deaf dog could find ahome – and sureenough, Kimchi
seemed to be justwho Begany waslooking for. Afterdoing the necessaryadoption procedures,Begany adopted Kim-chi, who settled rightinto her new homewith the other pets.
“Kimchi hasbeen through a lot inher life,” Begany says,
“but she doesn'tlet it bother herone bit … She en-joys doing thethings she can do-- like sleeping (alot!) and eatingand snuggling. Be-cause she is blind,we always jokethat she believesthat dog treats justfall from the sky!”
Kimchi’s happyhome may seem toher as if it, too, fellfrom the sky, but infact, it took a host ofcaring people to givethe dog her secondchance.

NAPSI)
If you are anolder adult, exercise isone of the best thingsyou can do for yourphysical and mentalhealth. According to theCenters for DiseaseControl, older adultsshould exercise for 150minutes a week, with agood mix of cardio andstrength training. Unfor-tunately, many peopledon’t get enough exer-cise to keep themhealthy and strong asthey age. Not only doesexercise help individualsstay healthy and reducethe risk of disability anddisease, it has beenproven to reduce thecost of care for individu-als and their families.
The benefits ofexercise have been real-ized by SilverSneakersFitness members formore than 20 years. Sil-verSneakers Fitness isthe nation’s leading fit-ness program designedfor older adults and hashelped thousands ofpeople reach theirhealth goals. ForPriscilla Farrell, it was towalk on the beach withher granddaughter andto rely less on an oxy-gen tank. For GeorgeJacobs, it was to stepfoot in a gym for the firsttime to improve hisphysical and social well-being. For Cecil Daniels,it was to overcome hisdiabetes and high bloodpressure.
“SilverSneakersFitness members likePriscilla, George andCecil are not onlychanging their lives
through fitness, they areleading a senior fitnessrevolution resulting inhealth improvements, higher quality of life andfulfillment at every age,”said Joy Powell, presi-dent of the Senior Solu-tions Division for
Healthways. “Today’sactive older adults areextremely dedicated tophysical health throughfitness, and they aremore passionate anddedicated than any pre-vious generation.”
Bringing this tolife, the 2013 Silver-Sneakers Fitness An-nual Member Survey ofmore than 35,000 re-spondents in 50 statesrevealed that Silver-Sneakers participantsare seeking personal-ized fitness options inrecord numbers, withnearly 46 percent joininga fitness center for thefirst time as a result oftheir SilverSneakersmembership.
While many arestepping foot in the gymfor the first time, theyare not doing it alone.Nearly 60 percent of Sil-verSneakers membersparticipate in classeswith a friend and 41 per-cent attend class to so-
cialize, which can havea great impact on a per-son’s mental health andwell-being.
The annualmember survey alsoshowed that today’solder adults are moreactive than ever before,
with four out of five par-ticipants doing aerobicactivity three or moretimes per week. Physi-cal fitness is vital tooverall health, as 60percent of SilverSneak-ers participants ratetheir health as “excel-lent” or “very good,” incomparison to only 47percent of peer respon-dents to Medicare’s an-nual Health OutcomesSurvey.
SilverSneakersFitness was founded in1992 and today servesmore than 11 million eli-gible members in morethan 11,000 participatingfitness and wellness fa-cilities nationwide. Formore information, to seeif you are eligible for Sil-verSneakers and to finda class in your area, call877-210-1307 or visitwww.SilverSneakers.com.
