Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful and kindle in them the fire of your love. Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia, alleluia! Acts 2:1-11 Galatians 5:16-25 John 15:26-27, 16:12-15 Please pray for our departed loved ones, especially Molly Xavier, Glenda Carrick and Janos Navratil recently deceased and also for Geoffrey Michael Turner, Percy, Marie, Keith and Phyllis Thatcher, Leo and Leigh Ann Maher, Tom and Kit Pluck, Peter and Terry Cunningham, Joan Begley, Peter Begley, Erin Begley and deceased members of the Begley and Bourke families. 20th May 2018 (Year B) Pentecost Sunday HOLINESS IN TODAY’S WORLD: Letter from Pope Francis 129. Holiness is also parrhesía: it is boldness, an impulse to evangelise and to leave a mark in this world. To allow us to do this, Jesus himself comes and tells us once more, serenely yet firmly: “Do not be afraid” (Mk 6:50). “I am with you always, to the end of the world” (Mt 28:20). These words enable us to go forth and serve with the same courage that the Holy Spirit stirred up in the Apostles, impelling them to proclaim Jesus Christ. 133. We need the Spirit’s prompting, lest we be paralysed by fear and excessive caution, lest we grow used to keeping within safe bounds. Let us remember that closed spaces grow musty and unhealthy. When the Apostles were tempted to let themselves be crippled by danger and threats, they joined in prayer to implore parrhesía: “And now, Lord, look upon their threats, and grant to your servants to speak your word with all boldness” (Acts 4:29). As a result, “when they had prayed, the place in which they were gathered together was shaken; and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke the word of God with boldness” (Acts 4:31). 135. God is eternal newness. He impels us constantly to set out anew, to pass beyond what is familiar, to the fringes and beyond. He takes us to where humanity is most wounded, where men and women, beneath the appearance of a shallow conformity, continue to seek an answer to the question of life’s meaning. God is not afraid! He is fearless! He is always greater than our plans and schemes. Unafraid of the fringes, he himself became a fringe. So if we dare to go to the fringes, we will find him there; indeed, he is already there. Jesus is already there, in the hearts of our brothers and sisters, in their wounded flesh, in their troubles and in their profound desolation. He is already there. 139. Let us ask the Lord for the grace not to hesitate when the Spirit calls us to take a step forward. Let us ask for the apostolic courage to share the Gospel with others and to stop trying to make our Christian life a museum of memories. In every situation, may the Holy Spirit cause us to contemplate history in the light of the risen Jesus. In this way, the Church will not stand still, but constantly welcome the Lord’s surprises. 129.

Plenary Council 2020 – Listen to what the Spirit is saying. Pope Francis has approved the Australian Bishops’ decision to hold a Plenary Council in Australia in 2020 and 2021. It is a significant moment for the Church in Australia to make decisions about the future. To prepare the agenda for the Plenary Council, all of God’s people are invited to reflect on the question: “What do you think God is asking of us in Australia at this time?” Find out more at the new website, now online: www.plenarycouncil.catholic.org.au

VOCATION VIEW – Be guided by the Holy Spirit, because with the Spirit comes, love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, trustfulness, gentleness and self-control. With God’s help, come forward to proclaim to those who are searching for meaning in life. As the Spirit is our life, let us be directed by the Spirit. Pray for vocations. To talk about your vocation, please call the Vocation Centre on 3324 3351.

A sense of humour is a gift from God. Laughter unites us. Clerical Collar - A little boy, not accustomed to seeing a

priest in his “work uniform” went up to the priest and asked, “Why do you dress so funny?” The priest replied, “This is what I wear when I work.” The priest pulled out the collar white plastic insert and showed it to the child telling him that it was also part of his uniform. On the back side of the collar there was some writing: “Wash with warm soapy water.” The priest showed this to the little boy and then asked him “Do you

know what these words say? The little boy, obviously much too young to read, stated, “I sure do.” The priest a little taken aback then replies, “OK then, tell me.” The little boy then replies, “Kills fleas and ticks for up to six months.”

ENTRANCE HYMN GATHER US IN

Here in this place, new light is streaming, Now is the darkness, vanished away, See, in this space, our fears and our dreamings, Brought here to you in the light of this day. Gather us in the lost and forsaken, Gather us in the blind and the lame; Call to us now, and we shall awaken, We shall arise at the sound of our name.

We are the young, our lives are a mystery, We are the old who yearn for your face, We have been sung throughout all of history, Called to be light to the whole human race. Gather us in the rich and the haughty, Gather us in the proud and the strong; Give us a heart so meek and so lowly, Give us the courage to enter the song.

GLORIA Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to people of good will.

We praise you, we bless you, we adore you, we glorify you, we give you thanks for your great glory. Lord God, heavenly King, O God, almighty Father. Lord Jesus Christ, only begotten Son, Lord God Lamb of God Son of the Father, you take away the sins of the world, have mercy on us; you take away the sins of the world, receive our prayer; you are seated at the right hand of the Father, have mercy on us. For you alone are the Holy one, you alone are the Lord, you alone are the most high, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Amen

RECESSIONAL HYMN

SEND DOWN THE FIRE

Send down the fire of your justice, Send down the rains of your love; Come, send down the Spirit, Breathe life in your people, And we shall be people of God.

Call us to be your compassion, Teach us the song of your love; Give us hearts that sing, give us deeds that ring, Make us ring with the song of your love.

Call us to learn of your mercy, Teach us the way of your peace; Give us hearts that feel, give us hands that heal, Make us walk in the way of your peace.

Call us to answer oppression, Teach us the fire of your truth; Give us righteous souls, ‘Til your justice rolls, Make us burn with the fire of your love.
