THE PROFESSION OF FAITH The Nicene CreedI believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible.

I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven,

[All bow.]and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man.

For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets.

I believe in one, holy, catholic, and apostolic Church. I confess one baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.

ANTHEM AT THE OFFERTORYHail the true body, born of the Virgin Mary: You who truly suffered and were sacrificed on the cross for the sake of man. From whose pierced side flowed [water and] blood: Be a foretaste for us in the trial of death. O sweet, O merciful, O Jesus, Son of Mary.

Ave, verum corpus natum de Maria Virgine: vere passum, immolatum in cruce pro homine: cuius latus perforatum unda fluxit sanguine: esto nobis praegustatum, in mortis examine. O dulcis, O pie, O Jesu, Fili Mariae.

V. At the Savior’s command and formed by divine teaching, we dare to say:R. Our Father, Who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy Name; Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against

us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

V. Deliver us, Lord, we pray, from every evil, graciously grant peace in our days, that, by the help of Your mercy, we maybe always free from sin and safe from all distress, as we await the blessed hope and the coming of our Savior, Jesus Christ.R. For the kingdom, the power and the glory are Yours now and for ever.

THE LORD’S PRAYER [Please stand.]

SIGN OF PEACEV. The peace of the Lord be with you always.R. And with your spirit.

Thou who once deigned to be clothed in flesh for the sake of the lost, grant us to be members of thy blessed body.

INTERCESSIONS

V. Christ invites all to the supper in which he gives his body and blood for the life of the world. Let us ask him:

R. Christ, the bread of heaven, grant us everlasting life.V. Christ, Son of the living God, you commanded that this

thanksgiving meal be done in memory of you, enrich your Church through the faithful celebration of these mysteries.

R. Christ, the bread of heaven, grant us everlasting life.V. Christ, eternal priest of the Most High, you have commanded

your priests to offer your sacraments, may they help them to exemplify in their lives the meaning of the sacred mysteries which they celebrate.

R. Christ, the bread of heaven, grant us everlasting life.V. Christ, bread from heaven, you form one body out of all who

partake of the one bread, refresh all who believe in you with harmony and peace.

R. Christ, the bread of heaven, grant us everlasting life.

GOSPEL John 6:51–58 Jesus said to His disciples:  I am the living bread which came down from heaven; if any one eats of this bread, he will live for ever; and the bread which I shall give for the life of the world is my flesh.” The Jews then disputed among themselves, saying, “How can this man give us his flesh to eat?” So Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of man and drink his blood, you have no life in you; he who eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day.  For my flesh is food indeed, and my blood is drink indeed.  He who eats my flesh and drinks my blood abides in me, and I in him.  As the living Father sent me, and I live because of the Father, so he who eats me will live because of me.  This is the bread which came down from heaven, not such as the fathers ate and died; he who eats this bread will live for ever.”

SILENT PRAYER

[continued]

Sunday, June 10, 2018 i 9

V. Christ, through bread you offer the remedy for immortality and the pledge of future resurrection, restore health to the sick and living hope to sinners.

R. Christ, the bread of heaven, grant us everlasting life.V. Christ, our king who is to come, you commanded that the

mysteries which proclaim your death be celebrated until you return, grant that all who die in you may share in your resurrection.

R. Christ, the bread of heaven, grant us everlasting life.

Our Father, Who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy Name; Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen.

THE OUR FATHER [Said by all.]

(Bishop) Let us pray. Father in heaven, you have made us for yourself; our hearts are

restless until they rest in you. Fulfill this longing through Jesus, the Bread of Life, so that we may witness to him who alone satisfies the hungers of the human family. By the power of your Spirit lead us to the heavenly table where we may feast on the vision of your glory

ANTHEM [Sung by the Cathedral Choir.]If ye love me, keep my commandments. And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another comforter, that he may ‘bide with you forever; e’en the spirit of truth.

Text: John 13:34–35Music: Thomas Tallis, ca. 1505–1585

GOSPEL John 15:9–17 As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you; abide in my love. If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commandments and abide in his love. These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full. “This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. Greater love has no man than this; that a man lay down his life for his friends. You are my friends if you do what I command you. No longer do I call you servants, for the servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all that I have heard from my Father I have made known to you. You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit and that your fruit should abide; so that whatever you ask the Father in my name, he may give it to you. This I command you, to love one another.

SILENT PRAYER

INTERCESSIONS

V. My brothers and sisters, our heavenly Father sent his Son Jesus Christ into the world that the world might be saved and all might be delivered from the power of sin and death. As a pilgrim people seeking Christ’s gift of everlasting life, let us pray for all people according to their needs.

For the holy Church of God throughout the world: that God the almighty Father guide it and gather it together so that we may worship him in peace and tranquility, we pray to the Lord.

R. Lord, hear our prayer.V. For our Holy Father Pope Francis: that God who chose him to be

pastor of the whole Church may give him health and strength to guide and govern God’s holy people, we pray to the Lord.

R. Lord, hear our prayer.

V. For Edward Scharfenberger, our bishop, and Howard Hubbard, bishop emeritus; for all bishops, priests, and deacons; for all who have a special ministry in the Church, and for all God’s people, we pray to the Lord.

R. Lord, hear our prayer.V. For all our brothers and sisters who share our faith in Jesus Christ:

that God may gather and keep together in one Church all who seek the truth with sincerity, we pray to the Lord.

R. Lord, hear our prayer.V. For those who do not believe in God of his Son Jesus Christ: that

the light of the Holy Spirit may help them to follow all that is right, and show them the way to salvation, we pray to the Lord.

R. Lord, hear our prayer.V. For those who serve us in public office: that God may guide their

minds and hearts, so that all may live in true peace and freedom, we pray to the Lord.

R. Lord, hear our prayer.

Lord our God, teach us to cherish in our hearts the paschal mystery

of your Son by which you redeemed the world. Watch over the gifts of grace your love has given us and bring them to fulfillment in the glory of heaven. We ask this

GOSPEL John 12:20–26 Now among those who went up to worship at the feast were some Greeks. So these came to Philip, who was from Beth-sa’ida in Galilee, and said to him, “Sir, we wish to see Jesus.” Philip went and told Andrew; Andrew went with Philip and they told Jesus. And Jesus answered them, “The hour has come for the Son of man to be glorified. Truly, truly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit. He who loves his life loses it, and he who hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life. If any one serves me, he must follow me; and where I am, there shall my servant be also; if any one serves me, the Father will honor him.

MOTET [Sung by the Cathedral Choir.]Hail the true body, born of the Virgin Mary: You who truly suffered and were sacrificed on the cross for the sake of man. From whose pierced side flowed [water and] blood: Be a foretaste for us in the trial of death. O sweet, O merciful, O Jesus, Son of Mary. Have mercy on me. Amen.

Ave, verum corpus natum de Maria Virgine: vere passum, immolatum in cruce pro homine: cuius latus perforatum unda fluxit sanguine: esto nobis praegustatum, in mortis examine. O dulcis, O pie, O Jesu, Fili Mariae. Miserere mei. Amen.
