STEWARDSHIP — ARCHITECTURE OF THE CARMEL MISSION BASILICA

Carmel Mission Basilica’s Nave This week continues with our general review of the architectural features of the Carmel Basilica Church its use, history, and symbolism.

From the beginning of humanity, sacred space was linked to special places and landmarks where ceremonial and exceptional events might of taken place. Unique geographic features such as caves, grottos and caverns in our earliest history held significant meaning where people would gather to contemplate creation. By the time of Christ’s birth, places of communion were defined and sacred space took the form of temples, shrines and architectural monuments. Our own Churches, Chapels offer the gathering area of devotion known as the nave. It is an open space but enclosed in the span of the structure where parishioners are provided access and admission for worship after the sacrament of baptism. The earliest churches were modeled from Jewish and Roman architectural norms imbued and developed with Christian meaning.

The word nave is derived from the Latin word navis which means ship. In Christian symbolism, the nave is related to Noah’s Ark or the boat of Saint Peter. One major theme throughout the Mission is the “River of Life” wave like pattern found on many doors around the Mission complex. Understood in context the Basilica Church is symbolically a ship which preserves us on the “River of Life”. As you inspect the scope of the nave notice the high windows which allow selective and dramatic lighting which highlights the images of Saints and the Stations of the Cross - liturgical instructional art placed for the benefit of the general Parish positioned purposely in the nave. In Mission Churches, the nave ends at the transept and or the sanctuary of the church designating the beginning of another level of initiation into our Catholic Christian experience.

DOCENT CORNER Saint James

There is a painting in the rear of the church on the right wall of a “Santiago” who was an apostle. You have to know a little more about this man to understand that he is St. James one of the first 4 apostles selected by Jesus. The painting has hidden secrets that tell you who it is.

James, the Greater was called by Jesus with his brother John (the sons of Zebedee) right after his fishing partners Simon and his brother Andrew at the Sea of Galilee. When Jesus went up to the mountain to pray (the Transfiguration), he took James, John, and Peter. They were also with Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane. James preached in Judea and Samaria and was one of the first martyrs of the Church. He was killed in 44 AD by King Herod Agrippa I (Grandson of Herod the Great).

Tradition has it that James preached in Spain before he died and that today his body is buried in Northwest Spain at Compostela. His tomb was rediscovered in 813 and it became an important pilgrimage site that rivaled Rome and Jerusalem as goals of Christian pilgrimage. Pilgrimages are still made to Compostela today.

The Cockle shell in the painting (coquille St. Jacques) is the traditional emblem of Saint James. The scallop shell symbol is used as a badge for those who had been on the pilgrimage to Compostela. The painting also shows James holding a stone column with Mary on top. This is "Our Lady of the Pillar" of Saragossa, Spain. It celebrates the 1st Marian apparition. She appeared to St. James in his hour of need and requested that a church be built in her honor. This is the first shrine to Mary and it has existed ever since. In the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939), 3 bombs were dropped on the church and none of them exploded.

Santiago, Chile founded by the Spanish in 1541 (Capital) was named for St. James. The unsigned painting is thought to be painted by students in the studio of Jose de Páez, a colonial master.

This insight into the Mission history was provided by the Carmel Mission Docent Association.

Theology on Tap Racism: Collective

Burden, Shared Responsibility

Wednesday, September 27th, 7:00 PM

London Bridge Pub, 256 Figueroa Street (at the foot of Wharf 2), Monterey Our speaker this month will be Dr. Maria Villasenor, Ph.D.,

Professor of Ethnic Studies at CSUMB. From the inception of our nation, the ideology of racism has structured American institutions, permeated the national culture, and had grave consequences for our country’s citizens. How have the peoples of the United States been burdened by racism and its consequences, and what is our shared responsibility to challenge its logic and its systems? God calls us to fight systems preventing the realization of his Kingdom; how might we help dismantle racial hierarchies centuries in the making?

Join Monterey Theology on Tap on Facebook! You can also send questions to

Deacon Warren Hoy at [email protected].

We hope to see you there!

Saint Francis of Assisi

Patron of Animals and Ecology ~ Feast Day: October 4

Saint Francis, perhaps the best-loved of all saints, was born in Assisi, Italy, in 1181. Young Francis enjoyed a life of luxury and fine clothes. One day, Jesus spoke to Francis from the crucifix in the little chapel of San Damiano: “Go, rebuild My house.” Francis gave away his riches to the poor and lived for Jesus. He went about as a barefoot beggar, telling people that God loved each of them so much that He sent His only Son to die to save them. Francis also loved all of God’s animals as his brothers and sisters. Others joined Francis in his care for the sick and lepers, and in 1224, Francis received from God the stigmata—the visible wounds of the Crucifixion. Francis died at Assisi in 1226, and two years later, was canonized a saint.

Saint Francis, pray for us!

The Museum Store carries a Large Collection of Saint Francis items including statues, books, jewelry and even pet medals.
