In the Pentecost story Jesus breathes on the disciples and it is this breath that brings the Holy Spirit. Breath is a life force throughout creation history. The first creation story lists all the living and moving animals as having the breath of life. The second creation story even more clearly portrays God breathing into the nostrils of the first human, literally breathing life into humanity. STEWARDSHIP

One Faith, One Family! Thank you to all of you who have donated to our Annual Ministry Appeal (AMA)! This is our only annual parish appeal and we desperately need your help to make our goal. To date, 134 families have generously made a donation to the appeal. Our hope was to have 100% participation from our parishioners. Please join this effort and help us reach our goal and be a part of this community effort! As you have heard, we have reached our diocesan goal and now all funds collected will go toward the renovation of Crespi Hall. Please help us make this a reality. So many of our parish ministries will benefit from the upgrades to the bathrooms and kitchen as well as the new office space. We know you all will be proud of the Parish Hall once the renovations are completed! Please prayerfully consider making a donation today. There is still time to contribute and we invite all to be included this year. Any amount would be greatly appreciated. You can donate using the envelopes in the pew or online at www.dioceseofmonterey.org/ama. Your gift can be a one-time donation or a gift donated in eight monthly installments. For instance, a gift of $200 would be $25/month payable over eight months. Please call the Mission Office if you have any questions. Thank you again for helping us reach our goal!

DOCENT CORNER

Gaspar de Portolá

In early June of 1770, Don Gaspar de Portolá helped found the Presidio of Monterey and Mission San Carlos Borroméo de Monterey. With his task finished, he left a Lieutenant in charge and sailed away never to return to California.

Portolá was a Spanish soldier, Governor of the Californias (Baja and Alta), explorer and the founder of San Diego and Monterey. He was born in Catalonia of a Spanish noble family and served as a soldier in the Spanish army. Portolá was charged with the expulsion of all Jesuits from the 15 missions of Baja California as decreed by King Charles III in 1767.

In 1769, Spain decided to establish military outposts and missions in Alta California out of fear that the territory would be claimed by either the English or the Russians. Portolá volunteered to command the expedition. Four separate detachments were to meet at the site of San Diego Bay. The land expedition led by Portolá arrived in June and joined up with the other groups. After their arduous journeys, little more than 100 had survived out of a total of the 219 men who left Baja.

Eager to press on to Monterey, Portolá and his expedition headed north by land in July. They could not find the harbor of Monterey and after exploring the region of San Francisco, returned to San Diego in January, 1770. After replenishing supplies at San Diego, they decided on a joint expedition to again search for Monterey and establish a colony. The ship San Antonio sailed with Fr. Serra and his party. The next day, Portola’s land expedition again marched north. The land expedition arrived in Monterey on May 24 and the ship a week later.

A Mass was conducted at the same oak tree that the Vizcaíno expedition had worshiped under in 1602 and possession of Monterey was officially taken. Six years after he left Monterey, Portolá was appointed the Governor of Puebla. After the appointment of a new Governor eight years later, he was advanced money for expenses and returned to Spain, after which nothing more is known about him. This insight into the Mission history was provided by the Carmel Mission Docent Association.

Saint Francis of Assisi Patron of Animals and Ecology

Saint Francis, perhaps the best-loved of all saints, was born in Assisi, Italy, in 1181. Young Francis enjoyed a life of luxury and fine clothes. One day, Jesus spoke to Francis from the crucifix in the little chapel of San Damiano: “Go, rebuild My house.” Francis gave away his riches to the poor and lived for Jesus. He went about as a barefoot beggar, telling people that God loved each of them so much that He sent His only Son to die to save them. Francis also loved all of God’s animals as his brothers and sisters. Others joined Francis in his care for the sick and lepers, and in 1224, Francis received from God the stigmata—the visible wounds of the Crucifixion. Francis died at Assisi in 1226, and two years later, was canonized a saint.

Saint Francis, pray for us!

The Museum Store carries a Large Collection of Saint Francis items including statues, books, jewelry and even pet medals.
