Plotting Your Project Readiness Roadmap. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Tamarind Discover how to navigate through your district’s strategic priorities and financial operations using

a Readiness Assessment that will help make your long-term facilities plan a success. Technology, environmental issues, changing demographics and community expectations will help shape the future of our school districts. But the reality is, in many cases, aging and outdated facilities put many projects in the fast lane.  How do you calculate the best solution for your facility needs? Can you compare and contrast the cost of a capital investment versus applying temporary fixes to your existing building? How much does disrupting the flow of business cost? There are many factors to consider when your district is positioned for these major expenditures. Attending this session will help you determine how to understand your complete operational value proposition, and if renovating or building is the best solution for your district.

heavy wind damage. All of these so-called unthinkable events happen with alarming frequency. This session speaks to understanding the importance of putting the district in a better position to deal with disastrous events. After attending, you will be sure to appreciate the significance of preparing for the unthinkable.

21st Century Cleaning in 21st Century Learning Environment . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Guava An outline to a realistic approach in cleaning today’s classrooms and school facilities will be

emphasized  As many know, ISSA, the worldwide cleaning industry association, developed a new cleaning standard for K-12 schools.  The goal of the cleaning standard is to quantify the cleanliness of a classroom with an ATP meter. Most school facilities over the last few decades have simply looked at the condition of high touch surfaces in their buildings and deemed them to be clean.  This session will provide information when using data from the ATP test and best practices to assist in keeping your schools clean and healthy.

Organizational Behavior Science Creates an Energy Conservation Culture . . . . . . . . Tamarind Every year, school districts and other educational institutions undertake sustainability initiatives

in an effort to increase energy efficiency and conserve energy. Typically, these initiatives include equipment retrofits, purchase of energy efficient equipment, installation of more automated controls systems (EMS) or investment in renewable energy sources – all requiring large capital expenditures or government subsidies. The greatest source of energy saving opportunity, quick financial payback and positive environmental impact is often overlooked – reduction or elimination of unnecessary energy consumption. This session demonstrates the proven effectiveness of eliminating unnecessary energy consumption by applying organizational behavior theory/principles to an energy conservation program. A real world case study will be represented by the La Crosse School District, which has achieved more than $6 million in savings in its utility expenditures over the past 12 years by partnering with Cenergistic in implementing a behavior change model to reduce energy consumption.

HVAC equipment (boilers, cooling towers, chillers, etc.) that utilize water to transfer heat are prone to corrosion, scale and microbiological fouling. Filtration is often an overlooked tool that helps keep this water clean. The benefits include lower energy costs, lower maintenance costs, and lower water treatment costs. This session provides an overview of the different types of filtration available on the market and the applications of each.

Comprehensive Facility Planning - Module 5 . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .Portia/Wisteria WASBO Facilities Certification Core Session Districts across the state are experiencing a wide variety of facility planning situations that vary from

rapid growth to declining enrollments.  Where enrollments are stable many of our facilities are aging and in need of upgrades.  This session will examine the essential elements of facility planning.  It will address the importance of having in-house staff or consultant professionals assess facility condition.  It will also explore the variables facility planners must include.  Finally, there is a look at district specifics that allow the board of education to make informed decisions.

• Charlie Kramer, Director of Buildings & Grounds, Eau Claire Area School District

Doing More with Less: Maximizing Lower Budgets & Less Staff . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Tamarind In today’s climate of shrinking budgets there is a reluctance to hire more staff (and not replace those

who retire, quit, or are asked to move on). The task of keeping facilities operational is getting more and more difficult as all of us are asked to do more with less staff and less financial resources.  This session will examine strategies you can incorporate to effectively handle these difficult realities.

wall detail conditions.  Many years of failure and water infiltration investigation work have revealed a number of commonly repeated design errors and questionable  construction practices at these critical transitions which prevent them from delivering long-term performance.  This presentation will identify these problems and demonstrate how to properly address conditions for long-term performance.  Specific topics will include through-wall flashing detailing at the foundation, through-wall flashing tie-in to waterproofing, horizontal waterproofing tie-in to wall finish systems, and building perimeter grading.

dark smoke, would you keep using it with a “wait and see” attitude, or get it checked out right away?   Most people would go straight to a garage they trusted rather than risk the potential consequences of being stranded on the open road.  But how often do those same people continue to operate a building for years without checking into issues like high energy use, high maintenance costs, and poor indoor air quality?  Building commissioning is a systematic method for evaluating issues in a building, fixing problems, and putting together a life cycle plan for upgrading your facilities.
