Can you believe we are here again?! Didn’t we just do this?

As we close out this year’s competition, our first year of the newly christened American Advertising Awards–Seattle, I offer congratulations to all of our ADDY®-winning agencies and clients for the incredible work you created in 2013. Each year of this competition you all continue to amaze me, our organization and our community with your talents.

The next stop for your work is our District Competition, where all Gold District ADDY winners will advance to the national judging round of the American Advertising Awards. I was so honored and proud to have a strong showing from Seattle in last year’s National Competition in Phoenix, and am looking forward to seeing even more of you take the stage at the AAF National Conference, this June in Boca Raton.

This June will conclude my term as President of AAF Seattle, and I have to give special thanks to each member of this year’s board—George, Martin, Luis, Ashley, Julia, Audrey, Charlotte and Kirsten—you continue to inspire me with your commitment to our club. Thank you for your support and friendships. There are so many more of you who I have served with on the AAF Seattle Board, as well as colleagues throughout our community, and my thanks extend to you as well. For believing in me, for your friendship, for your mentorship, and support. Thank you.

AAF Seattle has been such an important part of my life and career, and I hope that all of you find that this organization is a positive influence for you as well. You are the heart and soul of our club, and all of the work our board members, committees and volunteers do is for you. And while I will be stepping down as President, I am looking forward to being involved with our club in other ways, and continuing our partnerships.

JOHN BROWN 2014 SILVER MEDAL AWARD WINNER

ABOUT THE AAF SILVER MEDAL AWARD The Silver Medal Award is the highest honor given by the American Advertising Federation. Established in 1959, it recognizes the men and women who have made outstanding contributions to advertising and have been active in furthering the industry’s standards, while fostering creative excellence and social responsibility.

John Brown took a pay cut to start his career in advertising. A decision that truly paid off.

He was working as a sales rep for IBM office products in Tacoma when Tom Sias, Copy Chief for Cole & Weber, called with an oh-so-generous offer: $450 a month and an office that once served as a coat closet.

At Cole & Weber’s Seattle office, John worked his way up to Creative Supervisor and worked on the agency’s choicest accounts. Then after 11 years, John got the opportunity to be Creative Director of the agency’s Portland office, raising the bar on the creative work and eventually winning lots of awards for a once-conservative client list.

After returning to Seattle, John got an offer to be the Creative Director of Kraft-Smith, which was appropriately renamed Kraft-Smith & Brown. But before long, John decided to strike out on his own, opening John Brown & Partners in Pioneer Square. Scoring initial success with a Portland-area bank client, his second account turned out to be the defining one—a small sneaker manufacturer in Beaverton, Oregon called Blue Ribbon Sports.

They were soon renamed Nike.

As John says, “I immediately called the co-founder Phil Knight and invited him to lunch to introduce our fledgling agency. He told me frankly that he did not much like advertising but his dealers needed some promotional support but that I shouldn’t expect that this would ever be a big ad account.”

Working with photographer Bob Peterson, John wrote the early defining Nike ad. Its headline:

“There is no finish line.”

The copy read:“Sooner or later the serious runner goes through a special, very personal experience that is unknown to most people. Others say it’s a new kind of mystical experience that propels you into an elevated sense of consciousness.

A flash of joy. A sense of floating as you run. The experience is unique to each of us but when it happens you break through a barrier that separates you from casual runners. Forever.

And from that point on, there is no finish line. You run for your life. You begin to be addicted to what running gives you.

We at Nike understand that feeling. There is no finish line for us either. We will never stop trying to excel, to produce running shoes that are better and better every year.

Beating the competition is relatively easy. But beating yourself is a never ending commitment.”

In five years working on Nike, John’s work helped boost their annual sales from $25 million to $250 million.

And John’s work for Nike led to many other clients, including Saucony, Pacific First Federal, Seattle City Light, Metro Transit, Virginia Mason Medical Center, Lamont’s apparel stores, Pizza Haven, Speedi-Lube, Everett Herald, Seattle Weekly, several political accounts, including Governor John Spellman, Senator Dan Evans and Congressman John Miller.

Soon thereafter, Dick Hadley joined John’s firm, which now became Brown & Hadley and Partners. They created award-winning work for Puget Sound Bank until the bank was eventually acquired. It was then that John closed his agency and became a freelance writer, creative director and consultant.

These days, John lives in Bellevue. He has a son, a daughter, and six grandchildren to dote on. And he’s still available for hire. So you too can work alongside a great man and Pacific Northwest advertising legend. We’re proud to honor John Brown with this year’s AAF Silver Medal Award.

Judging for this year’s American Advertising Awards | Seattle took place from February 7-9 in the Bertha Knight Landis room of Seattle City Hall. Our five judges looked at a record amount of entries. So naturally, they had many tough decisions to make. Thanks to our judges who came from all over the country to spend the weekend looking at Seattle’s best advertising work.

Weird on its face, yes. But even weirder from a

business perspective when women make the majority

of household purchasing decisions and dominate

intentioned-beard-sporting-male or yes-I’ve-noticed-

this-for-years-female, do about it? Agency Folk: Look at

your creative leadership and start asking hard questions.

Client Folk: Ask why no one working on your product

remotely resembles anyone who actually buys your

product. Then, go talk about it wherever you talk about

things that get your personal fan base all fired up.

No one knows what could happen if the 3% becomes 50%.
