Saints Alive! All Saints’ Episcopal Church 121 North Main Street, Attleboro, MA 02703 508-222-2233 October 2013
Mission Statement
We are one with the Spirit, We are one with the Lord,
We are a renewed community of Faith
A nurturing family called to share the Lord’s message of Love, Compassion, and
Peace
With Words: Reflecting on God Together When the church gathers together, we use lots of words: words addressed to God, words in response to God, words about God. These words reflect and create our understandings of who God is acting in the world and in our lives. We need these words because these words enable us to enter into deeper relationship with God. Certainly words aren’t all we need – we also need silence to listen, we need music to feel, we need the symbols of bread and wine and water and oil to touch – but words are essential.
Often our words to and about God reflect our life experiences, both individually and shared. For example, someone who has suffered the loss of a spouse or a child, or someone who has known the joy of healing, may come to understand God and God’s activity in the world through this life experience. When we share with each other our understandings of who God is in our own life, we’re not only expressing our own experience. We’re also contributing to developing a community’s shared understanding of God, an understanding that can be shared with other communities of people. So I wonder, what words are spoken at All Saints’ about God, to God, in response to God? What are your words? What are our words? May we allow our community of faith to be a space and place of speaking and sharing God.
In peace,
Meghan+

Join us for Prayer & Praise on
Thursday evenings from 7-9PM.
Small-group Worship in a
relaxed setting.
This fall we are discussing the Beatitudes.
Led by Deacon Ron Tibbetts.
Thursday evenings, 7-9PM, in our Library (downstairs)
Co-Wardens’ Report Our work continues on our building as we prepare for the cold weather ahead. We have a plumber and electrician who both have a great deal of experience working on older churches and rectories who will be helping us with the heating system and new thermostats. We are moving forward as their schedules permit, but we have faith that we will be warm this winter! In addition, the work on the front doors has re-started after our contractor recovered from an unexpected illness. Mr. Paltrineri is an artisan but he is also 76, so we continue to be patient and hope for both his complete recovery and the completion of our glorious entrance. The One Family ministry continues as we reach out to families in need. On Saturday, September 28th, we welcomed 66 girls and boys and their parents and grandparents. This is 22 more people than came in July or 50% increase! Our next One Family is November 23rd. Come and share your time and talents and you will be surprised at the rewards you reap.

We are very excited to have four young people in our Confirmation Class this year. Currently they are learning about our parish through their help at the yard sale, Christmas fair, and other service activities within the church. We look forward to being a part of all they will be learning and also to being open to all we will be learning from them.
Godly Play classes for the younger set will focus on the story of Joseph and his wonderful coat, Moses and the Ten Commandments, and Jonah and his travels with a whale. Classes take place during the 10AM service. Nursery care is available every Sunday morning as well.

All Saints Episcopal Church
Vestry Meeting Minutes August 20, 2013
Present: Rev. Meghan Sweeney, Rev. Billie Mae Gordon, Barbara Boynton, Marian Coté, Lyn Darling, Richard DeCusati, Judy Little, Martha Lingard, Evelyn Sanford. The meeting began at 7:00 with opening prayer led by Rev. Meghan. Minutes: The minutes from the June 18, 2013 were reviewed and corrected. Barbara moved to accept the corrected minutes; Lyn 2nd. The motion carried. Announcements:
• Rev. Meghan provided the dates for the Vestry Meetings for 2013– 2014. Lyn mentioned that the Finance Committee would meet at 5:30 on the same dates.
• Marian announced Welcome Back Sunday will be celebrated with Make-Your-Own Sundaes on September 8, 2013.
• Evelyn announced the Yard Sale will be September 21, 2013 and the Christmas Fair will be November 9, 2013. The yard sale will include books, ‘Yvonne’s room’, bake sale, raffles, a children’s activity, lunch and more! The Boy Scouts will help with the set up and take down.
• Rev. Meghan advised that the first meeting for the parishes participating in the Hartford Institute study is scheduled for September 21, 2013. As this conflicts with our yard sale, we will not be attending. She also mentioned that the fall Diocesan Resource Day is scheduled for September 28, 2013, which conflicts with One Family. Rev. Meghan will attend part of both of these events.
• Rev. Meghan reminded us the Vestry retreat is scheduled for September 29, 2013 and will be held at the Darling’s home. Helen Netos will be the facilitator.
Discussion: Doors: Judy advised that Peter is still not well, but Ralph is back to work. They are hoping to complete the frame and sill work by the end of September so the building will be sealed up tight before the cold weather moves in. Lyn mentioned that the eyes to hold the hooks that allow the doors to be left open are missing. There was discussion regarding other methods to hold the doors open, but it appears the hooks are the best solution. Judy will speak with Peter about this. VPOD* Schedule: The schedule for October and November was circulated so we could sign up. Not all Sundays were filled so Rev. Meghan will email the schedule to the vestry to provide the opportunity to view calendars and then the schedule will be finalized. CORI Policy: The Diocese requires each parish to have a policy regarding Safe Church and CORI checks. Rev. Meghan distributed CORI policy guidelines for review. After discussion Lyn moved to accept the guidelines as presented. The motion was seconded by Marian and passed unanimously. Reports: Treasurer’s Report: Evelyn presented the Treasurer’s Report, reflecting balances through July 31, 2013. Rich moved to accept the report as presented and Barbara 2nd. The motion carried. Also distributed was the listing of grants, including expenses paid and balances. *Vestry Person of the Day

Rev. Meghan requested that the report showing the budget compared to actual be included in the future. Warden’s Reports: Lyn reviewed the status of the Green Grant. The whole grant, $10,000, will need to be spent by 12/31/13. The plan is to address the boilers and thermostats, including the electrical work. It is expected that the work will exceed the grant monies and the expectation is that the parish will fund some of the repairs. Marian commented that all work required by the health department has been completed. Additionally the window in the bride’s bathroom has been repaired, the cleaning of the pew cushions is almost complete and the repair of the kneelers is in progress. Clergy Reports: Rev. Billie Mae continues visitation to home bound parishioners on a regular basis. Barbara was acknowledged and thanked for sending get-well notes, birthday wishes and just hello notes to parishioners. Rev. Meghan announced that there would be a confirmation class this year and she is working on the details. She and Marian attended a Diocesan Sunday school workshop today and came back with some great tips for positivity. One suggestion is to welcome parishioners who may have been away for a while with ‘Welcome, it is nice to see you’. Another, ‘attitude with gratitude’ is a reminder to be grateful for what we have; not focusing on what we don’t have. There was discussion regarding the pros and cons of 9AM services in the summer months. No decision was made on what will happen to the schedule next year and this will be discussed again in the future. Rev. Meghan will be scheduling a men’s breakfast every other month. There would not be an agenda, but just an opportunity for the men to get together for discussion. Other Business: Rev. Bille Mae suggested an emergency call list for parishioners, which would be only used if a parishioner became ill while in the building. There will be an article in the newsletter about this and forms will be made available in the future. Rich announced that he will be painting the outside railings. Closing prayer was led by Rev. Billie Mae. The meeting adjourned at 9PM.
Respectfully submitted, Martha Lingard, Clerk

The weather was beautiful, we had great fun being together, and we raised $675!
Thanks to everyone who helped!
The ministry of stewardship is rooted in the understanding that the entirety of our life is a gift from God. The most precious gift is God’s self-gift, the person of Jesus Christ who came so that we may know life abundant.

A Prayer Attributed to Saint Francis Lord, make us instruments of your peace. Where there is hatred, let us sow love; where there is injury, pardon; where there is discord, union; where there is doubt, faith; where there is despair, hope; where there is darkness, light; where there is sadness, joy. Grant that we may not so much seek to be consoled as to console; to be understood as to understand; to be loved as to love. For it is in giving that we receive; it is in pardoning that we are pardoned; and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life. Amen.
