Shining Saints

Laura BenvenutoWomen’s Basketball

On February 16 in the regular season finale against Suffolk University, senior guard Laura Benvenuto (Wyckoff, N.J.)

came up with a huge defensive effort to help the Saints clinch the No. 1 seed in the GNAC tournament with their 56-35

victory over the Rams. Benvenuto registered a career-high eight steals in the win while also scoring 11 points. Her eight

steals rank 11th all-time in program history for most thefts in a single-game.

Connor MorganMen’s Basketball

On February 19 in the final game of his career, senior forward Connor Morgan (Gloucester, R.I.) lit it up in the GNAC

Quarterfinals, scoring a career-high 33 points in the Saints 85-76 loss to No. 1 Anna Maria College. The forward was on

fire, connecting on 13 of his 15 shots from the field including 5 of 6 from behind the arc. Morgan’s 33 points ranks fourth

all-time for points scored in a single game by an Emmanuel men’s basketball player while his .867 shooting percentage

on the night is the third-best single-game performance in program history.

Nathan BrunoMen’s Indoor Track & Field

On Saturday, Feb. 16 at the Division III Championships at the University of Southern Maine, Emmanuel junior Nathan

Bruno (Lenox, Mass.) raced to his best-ever time in the 600 meters, tearing up the track in an Emmanuel-record time of

1:21.06. Bruno’s 3rd place finish earned him All-New England honors in the event for the third-straight year. Bruno had

previously placed 7th as a sophomore and 8th as a freshman in the 600m.

All-ECAC Weekend cont.meters. Julien’s one-lap time of 49.25 broke his own EC program record in the event. After just missing All-ECAC honors with his 9th place finish (49.80) as a rookie, Julien’s top-eight finish earned him All-ECAC honors for 2013. The Emmanuel men’s 4x400 meter relay team placed 4th overall in a new Emmanuel record time of 3:19.93. Finishing behind Cortland State, University of Southern Maine and Coast Guard, the Saints team of Bruno, Julien, Ryan Thomas (Wakefield, R.I.) and Ben Perdue (West Springfield, Mass.) earned All-ECAC honors with their top-eight finish. The Saints 4x800m relay squad also earned All-ECAC honors. The team of Abdi Ibrahim (East Boston, Mass.), Chris Baker (Holden, Mass.), Thomas Tallo (Lincoln, R.I.), Patrick Callan (Pawling, N.Y.) cruised to a 7th place finish in a time of 8:00.29, breaking the program record they set two weeks ago by six and a half seconds. The Emmanuel men’s Distance Medley Relay, featuring Baker, Thomas, Bruno and Ibrahim, raced to a 10th place finish in a

time of 10:30.09. As a team, the Emmanuel men scored 19 points to finish in 17th place overall out of 51 competing teams. The Emmanuel women qualified for the ECACs in the 4x800 meter relay. The Saints team of Molly Metivier (Keene, N.H.), Chloe Egan (Burlington, Vt.), Julie Young (Derry, N.H.) and Meaghan Mauer (South Hadley, Mass.) finished in 9:59.71 for another new program record. The squad cut five seconds off the record time they set just two weeks prior. This was a historic weekend for the Saints’ Track & Field program. The ten All-ECAC performances was Emmanuel’s best showing ever at an ECAC Championship, surpassing the previous high of five all-star performances at the outdoor ECACs in 2012. The Eastern College Athletic Conference has nearly 200 members in Division III alone, making the championships among the largest such meet in the nation. The Division III Indoor Track & Field Championships have been contested, both men’s and women’s, since the mid-1980s.

Yosinoff inducted into uRi Hall of Fame

Emmanuel College Women’s Basketball coach Andy Yosinoff was inducted into the University of Rhode Island Athletics Hall of Fame for his accolades as a Men’s Tennis player in the late 1960’s.

NORTH KINGSTOWN, R.I. – Emmanuel College’s Head Women’s Basketball Coach and Associate Director of Athletics, Andy Yosinoff, can add yet another prestigious honor to his resume. Yosinoff was recently inducted into the Athletics Hall of Fame of his alma mater, the University of Rhode Island. A 1970 graduate of URI, Yosinoff was a standout on the Rams Men’s Tennis Team, before his reign as the head coach of the perennially powerful Emmanuel Saints Women’s Basketball Team. The URI Athletic Department hosted the Hall of Fame induction ceremony at Quidnessett Country Club on the scenic coast of Rhode Island. The event was originally supposed to take place as a Hall of Fame dinner on February 8th, but was postponed due to the “Blizzard of 2013.” Regardless of the date and time change, Yosinoff’s fan club was well-represented at what became a Sunday morning brunch. Yosinoff’s supporters filled four tables, with one full of friends and family, one with Emmanuel College co-workers, one with his former URI tennis teammates and one with Yosnoff’s URI fraternity brothers. As the top singles player for the URI Men’s Tennis Team in 1970, Yosinoff led the Rams to a perfect 14-0 season that was capped off by the school’s first-ever Yankee Conference title. Yosinoff also won the conference’s individual title that season and finished his career with a record of 48 wins and 12 losses in singles competition. Yosinoff holds the distinction of being the first Rhode Island student-athlete to earn a scholarship in tennis. A member of the United States Professional Tennis Association, he held the No. 1 singles spot in the URI lineup all four years with the Rams. Yosinoff graduated from URI in 1970 with the Bachelor of Arts degree in Physical Education and went on to earn his Master’s Degree in Physical Education from

Roecker Calls It Like She Sees It

Over the past 11 years, Emmanuel College Director of Athletics Pam Roecker has served as a freelance basketball broadcaster for several major TV networks including Comcast Sports Network, ESPN U, Fox, MSG and NESN. Over her career, Rocker has done live color analysis for the Colonial Athletic Conference, Northeast Conference, Big East, Atlantic 10, Horizon League and America East.

Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. Following his success at URI, Yosinoff became an adapted physical education teacher in the Boston Public Schools and coached boys’ high school basketball at the Snowden International School. Joining the staff at Emmanuel College in 1976, Yosinoff has served as the Head Coach of the Saints Women’s Basketball Team for the past 36 years, making him the third all-time tenured coach at any one school, trailing just Elizabethtown’s Yvonne Kauffman (42 years) and Tennessee’s Pat Summitt (38 years) in most years coached at one school. Yosinoff became the Director of Athletics at Emmanuel in 1986, a position he held along with his coaching duties until 2003. During his 36 seasons with the Saints, Yosinoff has led Emmanuel to 18 NCAA Tournament appearances and to 15 Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) titles, including a current streak of seven-straight GNAC Championships. He has coached the Saints as far as the NCAA Final Four in 2001, to the NCAA Elite Eight in 2012 and to the NCAA Sweet Sixteen in 2007. Currently, Yosinoff and the Saints have put together an impressive streak of thirteen-straight 20-win seasons and have not suffered a regular season conference loss since the 2009 season. Yosinoff is the third all-time winningest coach in Division III Women’s Basketball history and the second winningest active coach. Yosinoff captured his 700th career victory earlier this season, becoming the first Division III coach in New England to hit this milestone. He joined Division I UCONN’s Geno Auriemma and Division II Bentley’s Barbara Stevens in a trio of New England women’s coaches with 700 or more wins. Following Emmanuel’s Elite Eight run in 2012, Yosinoff was

honored by the Jewish Coaches Association with the Red Auerbach Award for the National Jewish Coach of the Year. In 2005, Yosinoff led the United States Women’s Basketball Team to a gold medal in the Maccabiah Games in Israel. This is Yosinoff’s third Hall of Fame induction. He was previously inducted to the New England Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame in

2003 and was among the first class inducted to the Great Northeast Athletic Conference Hall of Fame in 2010. “I’m so proud of this great honor,” commented Yosinoff. “This is definitely the highlight of my athletic career.” View the video shown at Yosinoff’s URI Hall of Fame induction on February 24, 2013.

Three members from the Emmanuel College Women’s Basketball team were selected as members of the 2012-13 All-GNAC

team including a Player of the Year nod while the Men’s Basketball team was represented with a selection as well.

After leading the Saints to an undefeated 12-0 mark in GNAC regular-season action and the program’s seventh-straight GNAC title, Fiona O’Dwyer (Stamford, Conn.), Laura Benvenuto (Wyckoff, N.J.) and Jennifer Bujnowski (Salem, N.H.) were voted All-GNAC by the 13 conference coaches. O’Dwyer was deservingly named the 2013 GNAC Women’s Basketball Player of the Year. O’Dwyer is making her second-straight appearance on the All-GNAC 1st Team and her third overall All-Conference selection. A four-year starter for the Saints, O’Dwyer led Emmanuel in both scoring and rebounding this season. The senior power forward netted 17.5 points per game and hauled in 9.1 rebounds per game, recording 10 double-doubles this season. After leading the Saints to three-consecutive double-figure wins in the GNAC Tournament, O’Dwyer was named the GNAC Tourney’s Most Valuable Player. She also received four other weekly honors from the conference throughout the season, including being named to the GNAC Weekly Honor Roll three times and the GNAC Player of the Week once. With a current career total of 1,557 points, O’Dwyer will graduate as Emmanuel’s third all-time leading scorer. She also has a four-year total of 920 rebounds, ranking her among the GNAC’s top all-time rebounders and
