Shining Saints

Xavier EversonMen’s Basketball

On January 5, senior guard Xavier Everson (Rochester, N.Y.) scored his 1,000th career point and grabbed his 500th career

rebound in Emmanuel College’s 97-87 win over Suffolk University. Everson drove baseline with 9:56 to go in the game

and laid the ball in for his 1,000th career point. Just three minutes later, Everson hauled in his seventh rebound of the

day and the 500th board of his collegiate career. During an Emmanuel full timeout, Everson was honored for reaching

these two milestones. He is now one of just five players in Emmanuel program history to eclipse 1,000 points AND 500

rebounds.

Joslyn DelSignoreWomen’s Indoor Track & Field

On January 26 when the Emmanuel College Men’s and Women’s Indoor Track & Field Teams competed at the Boston

University Terrier Invitational, senior captain Joslyn DelSignore (Taunton, Mass.) ran a personal best in the 1 mile event,

Yosinoff 700th victory cont.seasons. “I’m very happy for him. Andy has a passion for winning, but it goes beyond just winning for him. It’s about the players and Andy is truly committed to the Emmanuel student-athletes. He is a great guy and a great friend. I have enjoyed being a part of so many winning seasons.” Coach Yosinoff currently has the Saints on a remarkable 35-game GNAC regular season win streak, which dates back to the 2009-10 season. Under Yosinoff, Emmanuel once owned the longest win streak in Division III history at 72 games, a record that spanned the 2000-2006 seasons. Yosinoff has led the Saints to 14 GNAC Championships and to 17 NCAA Tournament appearances, including a trip to the Final Four in 2001, to the Elite Eight in 2012 and to the Sweet Sixteen in 2008.Yosinoff’s list of individual honors is lengthy. In 2008, he was honored for his contribution to women’s athletics with a “Heights Award,” presented by the Massachusetts State Lottery and Boston College Athletics. He is 2003 inductee of the New England Basketball Hall of Fame. After the Saints’ appearance in the national quarterfinals last season, Yosinoff received the 2012 Red Auerbach Award for the Jewish Coach of the Year. Next month, on February 8th,

Yosinoff will be honored by his alma mater, as the University of Rhode Island inducts him into their Athletic Hall of Fame. Yosinoff’s résumé also includes serving as the USA Maccabiah Open women’s basketball coach, where he guided Team USA to its first-ever gold medal during the 2005 Maccabiah Games in Israel. In this afternoon’s win, the two clubs played evenly throughout the first half, exchanging the lead several times before the break. The Saints heated up late in the half and took a ten-point advantage into the locker room at halftime (35-25). Emmanuel carried its late first-half momentum into the second frame and pulled out in front by as many as 28 points, before coming away with the 76-49 win. Emmanuel was paced by the lights-out shooting of junior guard Bria Tiro (Saugus, Mass.), who netted 16 points, draining five three-pointers in just 15 minutes of action. Senior forward Fiona O’Dwyer (Stamford, Conn.) recorded a double-double of 15 points and 13 rebounds for the Saints. Lasell got solid numbers from sophomore guard Alexis Chappell (Springfield, Mass.), who scored a team-high 12 points and grabbed 7 rebounds in the effort. Watch Post-Game Interview HERE

The Emmanuel College Women’s Basketball team posing for a team picture at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, Calif. during their trip in early January.

Women’s Basketball

The Saints are gearing up for another run at the NCAA tournament and will go for their seventh consecutive Great Northeast Athletic Conference crown in February. They currently sit a top the GNAC with a perfect 8-0 record and are in the midst of a 37-game regular season conference winning streak dating back to the 2009-10 season. One of the main reasons for the Saints success has been due to the play of senior forward Fiona O’Dwyer (Stamford, Conn.) who is currently averaging 18 points and 9.5 rebounds per game. She ranks fifth in the GNAC in scoring and first in rebounding. In other Women’s Basketball news, former player and assistant coach Ramona Foster was just named the Head Women’s Basketball Coach at Bunker Hill Community College. Foster, a 1994 graduate of Emmanuel, played for the Saints and also assisted Yosinoff from 2006-10.

Men’s Basketball

It was a tough January for the Saints as the team posted a 3-8 record during the month. The squad could not catch any breaks as they dropped seven of the contests by eight or fewer points including three losses by just 1 point over a one-week span. One bright spot for the Saints has been the play of senior forward Xavier Everson (Rochester, N.Y.). Everson leads the team averaging 17.1 points per game to go along with 7 rebounds per game. The senior captain has scored in double-figures in 16 consecutive contests and was named the GNAC Player of the Week for his contributions during the week of January 14-20. Despite their winter woes, the Saints still have a great chance to secure a spot in the GNAC playoffs which will include the top eight teams in the conference.

Men’s Volleyball Ranked No. 15 in AVCA Poll

The Emmanuel College men’s volleyball team has been ranked No. 15 in the most recent American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) national poll, it was announced on Tuesday. The Saints, who received a total of 19 points in the poll, crack the top 15 for the first time this season after being just outside on the pre-season poll that was released on January 8.

Read more about the Saints here.

Emmanuel currently sits alone in the eighth spot with a one-game cushion over Mount Ida College and Lasell College.

Women’s Indoor Track & Field

On January 12 at the Tufts Invitational, The Emmanuel women were led by strong individual performances from freshmen Julie Roberts (Williamsburg, Mass.), who ran a personal best 12:02.30 in the 3K, and Chloe Pangonis (Keene, N.H.), who ran a PR 1:58.20 in the 600m. Two Emmanuel women’s relay teams took 6th place. The 4x200m team of Molly Metivier (Keene, N.H.), Zoe Pierce-Dickens (Franklin, Vt.), Samantha Berthiaume (North Dighton, Mass.) and Nathalie Victoria (Brockton, Mass.) turned in a time of 1:56.79. The 4x800m team of Chloe Egan (Burlington, Vt.), Pangonis, Meaghan Mauer (South Hadley, Mass.) and Janelle Winship (Prospect, Me.) also snagged 6th place with their time of 11:01.35. Junior Kelly Ulf (Lunenburg, Mass.) led the way for the Emmanuel women in the field, competing in three different events. Ulf recorded a 14’0.50 in the long jump, a 30’11.75” in the triple jump and a 4’7.25” in the high jump. At Southern Maine, The women’s 4x800m relay team of Egan, Molly Metivier (Keene, N.H.), Young and Janelle Winship (Prospect, Me.) earned a 4th place time of 10:21.3, setting a new Emmanuel record and qualifying for the Division III New Englands.

Men’s Indoor Track & Field

On January 25 at the BU Terrier Invitational, the Emmanuel men’s distance medley relay team of Nathan Bruno (Lenox, Mass.), Ryan Thomas (Wakefield, R.I.), Adam Julien (New Orleans, La.) and Abdi Ibrahim (East Boston, Mass.) broke the program record with an improvement on their Division III New England qualifying time

(10:29.34) and qualified for the ECAC Championships in New York City. The team is currently ranked 2nd in New England and 17th nationally. Later that weekend at the University of Southern Maine Invitational, Ibrahim picked up a win in the 800m with his time of 1:58.05. Junior Chris Baker (Holden, Mass.) grabbed second place in

a personal best time of 1:58.28 and qualified for the Division III New Englands. The men’s 4x200m relay team earned a win with their cumulative time of 1:33.77. The team of Julien, Thomas, Ben Perdue (West Springfield, Mass.) and Bruno set a new college record and qualified for the ECAC

Championships.

FEBRUARY 2013

The Emmanuel College Men’s and Women’s Indoor Track & Field Teams donated their time in January when the Saints

volunteered at the Cradles to Crayons Giving Factory.

Founded in 2002, Cradles to Crayons is a non-profit organization, which collects new and gently used items for children of all ages and then creates and donates care packages for those in need. Through these efforts, Emmanuel student-athletes were able to impact the lives of many local children. Cradles to Crayons endeavors to provide homeless and low-income children with the essentials they require to thrive - to feel safe, warm, ready to learn, and valued. The care packages, which the Saints helped to create, are child specific. Thus, if a child is in need of a winter coat or school supplies, then a package is created to meet his or her specific needs. “We are moved on a daily basis by the people whose work brings our mission to life. You are the ones who made our work possible,” commented Marissa Ferber, Manager of Volunteer Relations at Cradles to Crayons. “On behalf of the children we serve - many thanks.” Cradles to Crayons has two locations, the one where the Saints volunteered on North Beacon Street in Brighton, Mass., as well as another in Philadelphia, Penn. The organization typically receives referrals through various social service agencies. Each week, Cradles to Crayons gets approximately 500 requests for children’s clothes, boots, toys and baby equipment. Volunteer groups often perform their community service activities in the warehouse, or “The Giving Factory,” sorting and organizing donations and creating care packages.

Men’s Volleyball Hosts 2nd Annual Alumni Match On Friday, January 25, the Emmanuel College men’s volleyball team hosted the second annual Alumni Volleyball Game at the Jean Yawkey Center. 18 alumni returned to campus for a match up against the Saints squad followed by an off-campus reception for the alums. Much fun was had by all as the current Saints downed the alumni squad, 3-0 (25-23, 25-20, 25-21). The former Saints put up a strong fight in the opening frame, leading the majority of the way until the young-guns rattled off five straight points behind the service of sophomore outside hitter Ashanti Jackson to take their first lead of the set at 23-22. A kill by Steve Yates (Class of 2006) evened the score at 23-23 but the youth prevailed with two kills to close out the set. The alumni fell behind quickly in the second frame, trailing 12-5 before calling a timeout to regroup. The former Saints would make a late push to close to within five points but would not get any closer as the current squad held on for the 25-20 second set victory. In the third set, the alumni led early before giving way to the youth of the Saints, 25-21.
