Since Emmanuel’s transition to co-educational in 2001, the College’s Athletic Department has more than tripled in size,

going from five varsity sports in 2000 to 17 varsity programs in 2012. Over the past decade, Emmanuel has graduated

hundreds of male and female student-athletes.

Post college graduation, many of these former Emmanuel athletes have returned to their routes, opting to give back to the sports they love so much. With their NCAA Division III playing experience under their belts, many Saints alums are taking their athletic careers to another level, choosing to remain in the game, this time with a spot on the sidelines. As we begin a new year, we’ve chosen to take a look back at some of the Emmanuel alums, who are now in the coaching ranks. Here is a not-so-short, yet surely incomplete, list of Emmanuel College graduates over the past ten years, who are taking their shot at coaching at a variety of different levels. Shining Saints

Theo RobinsonMen’s Basketball

Junior forward Theo Robinson (Springfield, Mass.) was named the Great Northeast Athletic Conference Men’s Basketball

Player of the Week for his play during the week of Dec. 10-16. This marks the fifth time in Robinson’s career that he has

been recognized by the GNAC as he was named the Rookie of the Week once during his freshman campaign while being

appointed to the GNAC Weekly Honor Roll on three occasions last season.

During the week, Robinson posted his 21st career double-double with 22 points and 14 rebounds in a non-conference

loss to Endicott College.

Nate BrunoMen’s Indoor Track & Field

Bruno led the Saints at the Brandeis University’s Reggie Poyau Invitational on December 8, as the junior captured a pair

of first place victories. He sprinted to a win in the 600m with a time of 1:24.23. He then teamed up with the trio of Ryan

Thomas (Wakefield, R.I.), Ben Perdue (West Springfield, Mass.) and Adam Julien (New Orleans, La.) for a win in the men’s

4x400 meter relay. This time was an improvement on the relay team’s Division III New England qualifying time from their

first meet of the indoor season.

Fiona O’DwyerWomen’s Basketball

Senior forward Fiona O’Dwyer was named to the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Weekly Honor Roll during

back-to-back weeks to open the month of December, landing a spot on the weekly reports for her play during the weeks

of Dec. 3 and Dec. 10.

O’Dwyer is currently leading the Saints while ranking fifth in the GNAC averaging 20.2 points per game to go along with

an impressive 10.3 rebounds per game which not only leads the Saints and the GNAC but also ranks 44th in the nation

From Players to Coaches cont.Emmanuel last May after captaining the Saints for two seasons and immediately got a position as an assistant men’s soccer coach at GNAC rival Norwich University. Koenemann returned to Boston this year, but dressed in maroon, as he coached his Cadets to a 2-0 win over the host Saints. Ivan Barrera (’12) is now coaching a boys’ recreation team back in his hometown of Millis, Mass. Women’s Soccer alum Liz (Weaver) Lane (’06) is the head coach of the Leominster High School Varsity Girls Soccer Team. Weaver’s teammate, Venus Corriveau (’05), is coaching the girl’s soccer team at Brookline High School. Hillary Mota (’10) is the head coach of the Nova Soccer Club. Several Men’s Basketball alums are now coaching at an assortment of age levels. After leaving the sidelines at Emmanuel last year, Albert Hayle (’05) is now the Assistant Coach for the men’s team at UMass Boston. Hayle, along with teammates Keven James (’05) and Jerry Etienne (’05), were apart of Emmanuel’s very first men’s basketball team. James is now coaching a boy’s varsity team in Stratham, New Hampshire and Etienne is the junior varsity boy’s coach at Brookline High School. Dan Nagle (’09) was a former assistant coach for the women’s team at UMass Boston and now coaches the girl’s varsity team at Bellingham High School. The Emmanuel Men’s Basketball Program’s all-time leading scorer, Rob Williams-Hinton (’09), is an assistant coach of the boy’s team at Mission Grammar School in Roxbury. Williams-Hinton’s team plays their home games in Emmanuel’s Jean Yawkey Center. A number of Emmanuel Women’s Basketball alumnae are now coaching. Leah Lipschitz (’08) is the head coach of the women’s team at GNAC rival Mount Ida College. Lipschitz will lead the Mustangs against her alma mater and her former coach, Andy Yosinoff, on January 15th. Lipschitz’s teammate, Eric Wenz (’08) is coaching right across the street from the EC campus, serving as the girl’s junior varsity coach at Boston Latin. After a several years coaching in the Westwood school system, Kanee Chlebda (’05), who was a two-sport athlete at Emmanuel, is now coaching girl’s varsity basketball at Dover-Sherborn High School and girl’s

Harrington is in her second season as the junior varsity basketball coach, but plans to add tennis and soccer to her coaching resume, beginning this spring. Tyson Reitz (’11) joined Emmanuel’s Men’s Volleyball coaching staff shortly after graduating. He is the program’s most recent alum to join the coaching ranks. However, they have several others leaving their marks throughout the high school and college coaching scene. After a year coaching volleyball at Coastal Carolina, Steve Yates (’06) joined the UConn staff as a Women’s Volleyball Assistant for the Huskies. The Saints’ second all-time leader in kills, Michael Townsend (’10) is back at his former high school as the Head Boy’s Varsity Volleyball Coach at Patrick Henry High School (Va.). A grand Resolution

Emmanuel College Assistant Sports Information Director Dan Campagna ran 1,000 miles during the 2012 calendar year.

As the page turned on 2012, Emmanuel College Assistant Sports Information Director Dan Campagna completed a yearlong journey that began with his resolution last New Year’s Eve. On December 31st, 2011, Campagna vowed to run 1,000 miles in 2012, a twelve-month goal requiring strategy, determination and endurance. Consider 1,000 miles. From Boston, you could travel west for 1,000 miles and hit Chicago or south to Savannah. Campagna’s cumulative runs would have taken him north as far as Newfoundland. In total, he completed the mileage equivalent to over 38 marathons last year. As we all know, New Year’s resolutions often begin with good intentions, but tend to be short-lived if they aren’t comprised of short-term objectives. Campagna’s long-term goal was well thought out and included a series of checkpoints along the way. For example, Campagna knew he would need to run at least 83 miles per month in order to achieve his goal. He used a spreadsheet to track his progress along the way, which included 261 total running days. The 261 runs varied drastically in distance, with Campagna’s longest run totaling 21 miles back in July and his shortest just a one-mile jog. His average daily run logged in at just under four miles. Despite his training dedication and tracking precision, many of the short-term check points were not reached easily. After running the coldest winter months inside on the treadmills in Emmanuel’s fitness center, Campagna headed to Florida over the College’s spring break with the Saints Softball Team. At only about 200 miles into the endeavor, it was last March that Campagna thought his

Emmanuel Hosts 2012 Shooting Touch Shootout

Over the winter break, Emmanuel College opened its’ doors for

the 2012 Shooting Touch Shootout, a High School Boys Basketball

tournament sponsored by Reebok, Powerade and several other local

sponsors. The Shootout featured nine teams from around the country

with a very high level of basketball.

ultimate goal might be a stretch. “I went from training inside to my first outdoor run,” he explained. “And I figured, if I don’t want to do this in Florida, how am I ever going to get it done in New England?” It was through strong self-will and consistency, that he persevered. Once the brisk winter months passed and his outdoor running became more prevalent, Campanga utilized the popular training website www.mapmyruncom to precisely track his mileage on a daily basis. A 2007 graduate and now a full-time employee of Emmanuel College, Campagna often used his four-mile roundtrip commute to work as his daily running trek. Campagna ultimately completed his twelve-month journey on December 25th, a significant Christmas present to himself. In a Facebook post last month, Campagna stated that he ran his final ten miles as a tribute, dedicating each mile from 990 to 1,000 to different friends and family members who supported him along the way. “I’m extremely proud of myself,” the 28-year old stated, once the thousand miles had been run. “I never considered myself a runner. That is actually why I became a soccer goalkeeper,” he laughed, “because I never liked to run.” A former multi-sport collegiate athlete, this was a way for Campagna to stay competitive. “It was a race to the finish against myself. I kept telling myself that I was going to get to 1,000.” And he did, despite wearing through seven different pairs of sneakers along the way! Campagna was inspired to achieve this unique goal by a friend, who had run 500 miles in 2011. “I tracked my friend’s progress throughout the year and decided that 1,000 miles was

doable for me.” Campagna’s huge accomplishment has now sparked a trend, as two of his high school friends are aiming to run 1,000 miles this year. Although the thousand miles are in the books now, Campagna isn’t done running. Without mentioning any new resolutions for 2013, he does have some plans on the horizon. “I would definitely

like to run a marathon in 2013. This is the best shape I’ve ever been in, so I would like to try to run Boston this year.” Campagna is taking a little bit of time off right now, but plans to keep running and begin to increase his distances in preparation for the Patriot’s Day race. Congratulations Dan on your grand accomplishment!

JANUARY 2013

Emmanuel College Assistant Athletic Trainer Katie Bloor recently completed a continuing education program, which

focused on new research and treatment techniques for Low Back Disorders.

Bloor, who is in third year with the Athletic Department at Emmanuel, received 20 Continuing Education Units (CEUs) for her participation in the program, conducted by Desert Southwest Fitness out of Tucson, Arizona.

The main focus of the training was to examine the current and traditional methods of evaluating and treating low back disorders, and further, to evaluate the effectiveness of these methods. “The training helped sort out the myths from the facts, based on research,” explained Bloor. “I learned that many of the ways athletic trainers have been taught to treat certain back pain and disorders cannot be proven as effective based on the more current research.”

Having just completed the training in December, Bloor has not yet had a chance to put much of her new knowledge to work in the Saints’ Athletic Training Room. However, “I will definitely be putting what I learned into practice after the winter break,” she stated. “Low back disorders are one of the most common complaints, not only by athletes, but also from the general public. Low back pain can be debilitating, and, if not treated correctly, can persist throughout one’s lifetime. By learning a few new methods of treatment, and by identifying which old methods are ineffective and may cause harm, we will be able to help our student-athletes recover from back pain quicker and more effectively.”
