damage.

Every few years ASCE puts out a report card documenting how ourinfrastructure is doing. The Virginia report card will be released in thespring. Upon its release, we will be working to show the government andpublic how the existing infrastructure is holding up, and what needs to bedone to help prevent problems in the future. As we prepare for therelease, please remember to think of those affected by this storm and help

us to make a change for the future.

On a lighter note, we have several great events coming up this month! Ihope to see you at our happy hour to celebrate those taking the PE exam,or at our monthly meeting where we'll be learning about filming movies inVirginia and how the process compares to the set up of a construction site. And as always, please feel free to contact me with any questions orconcerns at [email protected].

Have you ever wondered what goes into the production of a movie? Whilemany of us enjoy the final product, we often forget about all of the hardwork that goes into finding locations, setting up equipment and otherlogistics, and problem solving to avoid disrupting the lives of citizens. TheVirginia Film Office in Richmond has been instrumental in the staging andsetting up of several locally filmed movies, including Steven Spielberg'shighly anticipated "Lincoln".

On Thursday November 15th, we are pleased to welcome Andy Edmundsfrom the Virginia Film Office to enlighten us with tales of filming inRichmond, and how this can be just like what many civil engineers do whenpreparing construction sites.

To register, please visit our website, www.ascerichmond.org. For anyquestions, please contact Brooke Young at [email protected].

Andy Edmunds, the Interim Director of the FilmOffice, started with the Virginia Film Office in 1997after he realized that he was never going to hit it bigas a rock and roll star. An accomplished musician, anddedicated father of three, Andy studied music atVirginia Commonwealth University and went on toperform with several bands, before moving on to workin various capacities in feature films shot in Virginia.

As the Virginia Film Office Location Manager, Andy isresponsible for assisting productions filming in thestate with locations, crew, accommodations, andproblem solving of all kinds. During his time with the Film Office, he hasbeen involved with many films and television projects including The NewWorld, The Contender and Steven Spielberg's production of Lincoln. Whennot involved with production, Andy is actively involved in whatever his kidsare involved with, and supports his wife with PoshTots, her online companythat sells unique children's furniture and accessories.

General Assembly Meet and

Greet Informational Session

Our branch will again host a meet and greet with Virginia's GeneralAssembly in January 2013 to both be a presence to them as civil engineersand educate them on the bills that relate to civil engineering.

Previously,we have held a brief informational session directly prior to the event, butbecause some folks have difficulty getting off of work in time to get thereand also the quantity of information we try to review, we have chosen thisyear to have two informational sessions in the weeks leading up to theevent to be more precise about the goals we are trying to convey to theassembly.

The first of these informational sessions will be Tuesday, November 27th

from 5:30pm to 6:30pm at the Winchester Building - 10800 MidlothianTurnpike, Richmond, Va 23235.  We will be reviewing the process ofpushing a bill through the GA and our strategies to effectively lobby thosebills that impact our industry.  The second session will be in early Januaryand we will discuss specific bills we wish to lobby for and also introducesome names and faces of the people that we will be talking to at theevent.

Please register on our website if you wish to attend the event inNovember.  Be sure to leave your email address as the number of peoplewho register will affect which room we end up being in.

An email will besent to those who have registered with further details as the date getscloser.

If you have any questions, please contact Chris Vaught at [email protected]

Engineer's Without Borders - VCU Capter

Recently, a couple of our board members were fortunate enough to sitdown with some of the members of Virginia Commonwealth University'sEngineer's Without Borders Chapter (EWB). As many of you know, VCU doesnot have a civil engineering program, so many of the students involved

with EWB have backgrounds that are in mechanical, biomedical, orelectrical engineering. While this leads to great diversity, it also presentsproblems as they are unsure of the best methods of completing their waterdistribution project. Please read their project information below, and ifyou can offer any assistance, please contact Amy [email protected] to help out.

The chapter is working with a village called San Antonio de Lomerio inBolivia. This village has no access to clean water and relies on gatheringwater from local ponds contaminated with animal wastes, or from adistribution system that is prone to leakage and inadequate supply. Thesystem has no filtration, and has many elements that are in need of beingfiltered out, including a nitrate count that is too high to be measured.

The students have completed a preliminary analysis trip and are planningon heading back to Bolivia over their spring break to start work. Beforethey leave, they are hoping to obtain some GIS equipment to help map thesystem, learn more about pipe properties and methods of fixing pipes tominimize replacement, ways to disinfect the water, how to determinewhere the leaks in the system are located, and how to use CAD. If you, orsomeone you know, has access to a way to help the students, please let usknow! Additionally, if you are working in the field of water treatment ordistribution and are able to make the trip with them, the students wouldbe glad to have the assistance.

For pictures of the village system, please visit our website at
