PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Mike Howell, PE I have a confession to make…I never wanted to be an engineer when I was growing up. The closest I came was a brief point during middle school that I wanted to become an architect because I enjoyed building models and I thought that is what they did. My desire even went so far as to tell my high school guidance counselor during a senior year interview that although I was not certain of what I wanted to do after school, based on the classes I enjoyed I was positive that I didn’t want it to involve math or science! In an effort to impress my tennis coach Mr. Mahosky (who was also the teacher of the class) and at the urging of that same guidance counselor, I decided to take Physics in my senior year. That’s when something very interesting happened in my life. For the first time as a student I had a teacher that urged us to start asking “why, how, where, and most importantly, what if?” Although Mr. Mahosky was not an engineer, he understood the importance of what engineers did and consistently strived to show us the ways that what we were learning actually mattered in the real world! I found a passion for applying science and math that I never knew I had. The sad part about my story is that there are probably an immeasurable amount of students who, just like me, have gotten lost in the routine of math and science classes. They have never had the opportunity to see beyond the worksheets and quizzes and how these subjects get applied in engineering to create some of our world’s greatest inventions. That is why student outreach events, like the ones happening during the upcoming Engineer’s Week at the end of February, are so important to the future of our industry. It could be the one time that allows a student to see outside of the windows of their classroom to all of the amazing things that engineers do. The Richmond Branch has traditionally been very supportive of this opportunity by hosting an annual Popsicle Bridge Contest during the Richmond Joint Engineers’ Council Career Day at the Science Museum of Virginia. The event is in its 17th year and has grown so much in recent years that it is quickly approaching 200 students participating! This is an amazing chance for us to impact the lives of many students in a single day. I would encourage all of you who had someone make a difference in your decision to become a civil engineer to come support this effort. We need volunteers to come help run the event but we also need you to simply show up and share with the students your own story of what being a civil engineer has meant in your life.

MEET THE… EDUCATION OUTREACH CHAIR

Brooke Young, E.I.T. I am the 2011-2012 Education Committee Chair for the Richmond Branch of ASCE. I spent the first 10 years of my life in Findlay, OH, and then my family moved to Richmond, VA. I went back to my roots for college, and graduated from Ohio

Northern University in 2009. I was surrounded by engineers growing up. My dad and his three brothers were engineers (two Electricals, a Mechanical, and a Chemical). I wanted to follow in their footsteps, but I was determined to bring something new to the table so I choose Civil Engineering as my path.

I am currently a transportation Engineer-In-Training at Kimley-Horn and Associates’ Henrico, Virginia office. I originally joined ASCE at Ohio Northern as a student member and later served as Treasurer. I was a paddler and Mix Design Engineer for our ASCE Concrete Canoe team. Hard work paid off, and we were the 2009 North Central Conference Champions! Thanks for having me as your Education Chair, as I am honored to be a part of such a dedicated group of members.

MEMBERSHIP COMMITTEE NEWS

Message from Your Membership Chair Hello fellow engineers, from the Membership Committee! This is my first time writing to you, and I'm very excited about the future of ASCE in Richmond. I've been working closely with the other ASCE Richmond Branch committee chairs and we have some great ideas in store for you in the months ahead.

But first let me first share my vision for the Membership Committee. Per our By-Laws, Article 8, Section 6 (Available online at http://ascerichmond.org), the goal of the Membership Committee is to “...plan events to promote new membership and shall maintain existing membership by encouraging participation and interest in ASCE in the Richmond area.” What do I think this means? I can summarize in one word – GROW. In February we celebrate the profession we love – Engineering. And I would love nothing more than to see the number of active members grow in the months ahead.

So, how does that happen? It starts with you. Get involved in activities. Bring a coworker or friend from college. Get active! Second, I encourage you to visit ASCE.org and go to MyASCE in the uppermost toolbar. Login and double-check the contact information stored in your Profile. This is how we, the Committee Members and event organizers, let you know what is going on. You can't be active if we can't contact you so check your contact information. Check the email you provided for your Profile online and make sure you're receiving the newsletter and other pertinent ASCE information.

Above all, get involved! Your contribution, no matter how small you think it may be, could be the catalyst to encourage another engineer to get involved. We are a society by engineers, for engineers. But it can't continue without you. I look forward to meeting you at our next event.

Ed Buchanan, Membership Chair

NEWS FROM THE VICE PRESIDENT

2012 Eastern Regional Younger Member Council The 2012 Eastern Regional Younger Member Council (ERYMC) meeting was held on January 20-21 in Nashville, Tennessee. Mark Yanik attended on behalf of the Richmond Branch’s Younger Member Group. The objective of the Council meeting was to strengthen and expand the programs and activities of Younger Member Groups through the exchange of ideas, information and experiences, while exposing incoming officers to the tools and resources needed to be effective leaders. In addition, the Council offered an excellent opportunity to network with other Younger Members from other Regions. As part of the Multi-Region Leadership Conference, the Workshop for Student Chapter Leaders (WSCL) and the Workshop for Section and Branch Leaders (WSBL) ran concurrently with the ERYMC meeting, and several joint sessions and activities were held. Mark returned from the ERYMC meeting with a wide range of resources and ideas for growing and strengthening the Richmond Branch Younger Member Group in the upcoming year.

NEWS FROM THE PRESIDENT

2012 Region 1, 2, 4, 5 Workshop for Section and Branch Leaders The 2012 Region 1, 2, 4, 5 Workshop for Section and Branch Leaders (WSBL) conference was held on January 20-21 in Nashville, Tennessee. Mike Howell attended the conference as a representative of the Richmond Branch and Virginia Section. The purpose of the workshop was to bring together the leaders and future leaders of the regions, sections, and branches to better inform them about the services ASCE provides as well as to provide a forum to share ideas among the society leaders. Besides providing practical suggestions for services available at the national level of ASCE for branches and sections, there were also opportunities to participate in discussions with the four candidates for President-Elect, the current ASCE President, President-Elect, and Executive Director about the direction of ASCE on a national level. All of the leaders who attended the conference came back better informed about what ASCE is on a large scale, more confident about the direction of the society, and armed with countless ideas to better improve their own respective groups forward.

SPOTLIGHT ON A MEMBER

Celebrating the Career of Edwin M. Phillips, P.E., M. ASCE Edwin Phillips has been a member of ASCE since 1994 and has over 30 years of experience working in the engineering industry. He currently works for Greeley and Hansen LLC at their Stony Point Office in Richmond. Edwin is our featured Spotlight Engineer for February.

Edwin has devoted his career to working in Virginia and supporting local and national engineering organizations such as ASCE, VSPE, the American Concrete Institute, and RJEC. He is a mentor to younger engineers and offers advice and direction without hesitation.

Not limited to giving back to just the engineering community, Edwin is also very active in the NRA, supporting 2nd amendment rights for all citizens. He also gives back through his church, having served as Deacon, Elder, and Usher.

Edwin offers the following advice to younger engineers and those looking to improve themselves in their profession: Spend time in the field! Edwin says he gained invaluable experience while working in the field, assisting in construction inspection of utility, bridge, and roadway projects. He recalls his first design project, in which he was working as a newly-graduated structural engineer. He designed a concrete vault “by the book”, taking into account all the textbook variables while reducing the overall dimensions to use the least amount of concrete and maximum reinforcing allowed. When his design was given to the contractor to build, the contractor was unable to pour concrete into the form due to the tight spaces. By visiting the jobsite and seeing his design in construction, Edwin gained valuable experience for future projects.

Any engineer who is familiar with the VDOT Road and Bridge Specifications can thank Edwin, as he also contributed his expertise during the 1980’s as a member of the Revision Committee. Edwin was one of only two consulting members on the committee. Again, Edwin attributes his field experience for his contributions and insight when advising VDOT.

Edwin has been married to his wife for 41 years, has two daughters. He has lived in Henrico County since 1989. Edwin welcomes questions or comments and can be reached via email at [email protected].

GOVERNMENT RELATIONS COMMITTEE NEWS

VA General Assembly Legislation

The ASCE Virginia Section and Richmond Branch held our 4th Annual Meet and Greet with the General Assembly on January 18, 2012 at the Jefferson Hotel. Entering our 4th year there was much expectation for growth in attendance from the General Assembly. Prior to the event we received an increased number of positive responses from our legislators. The event was well attended and a success. The number of legislative offices represented nearly doubled over last year’s attendance.

Over the course of the Meet and Greet 65 people attended the event. Thank you to all ASCE members that came out to support our event and promote civil engineering issues with our Legislators. Further evidence of growth of this annual event was the increase in attendance by our legislators. This year 24 Delegates, Senators or their representatives attended our event, which is an increase over previous years with a larger number of representatives in attendance in addition to an increase in the offices represented. Several legislators who have attended our event in the past were welcomed again this year. We were promoting long term transportation funding and dam safety regulation. There are several bills related to each topic in the General Assembly this session. Listed below is current legislation being proposed and ASCE’s position on each bill. If you would like additional information on civil engineering related bills in the General Assembly or would like to participate in the government relations committee please contact Austin Clark at [email protected].

Preceding the Meet and Greet, Austin Clark and Bryan Stevenson led a legislative briefing and training session for engineers attending the event. We discussed why we host the Meet and Greet, ASCE’s mission, described the 5 key solutions to raising the ASCE report card grade, discussed 3 myths of advocating, reviewed the legislative process, identified Senators and Delegates on key committees, reviewed the 5 priorities for state government relations this session

Infrastructure financing Licensing & continuing education Qualifications based selection for engineering services Science, technology, engineering & math (STEM) education Sustainability

The last topic reviewed was legislation filed to date. The bills important to ASCE and its advocacy campaign are listed below. As the session progresses follow these bills on ASCERichmond.org for up to date information.
