The Wisconsin State Honors Music ProjectThe Wisconsin State Honors Music Project is spon-sored by the Wisconsin School Music Association (WSMA). The Honors Project began in 1967 to provide musically talented youth with the opportunity to rehearse and perform with the nation’s finest conduc-tors in a professional, highly disciplined setting. In 1995, WSMA proudly sponsored the first-ever Middle Level State Honors Band. A WSMA Middle Level State Honors Choir was added in 1996, and in 1997, the WSMA Middle Level State Honors Orchestra made its debut performance. Students in grades 6-8 who attend WSMA-member schools are eligible to audition for the WSMA Middle Level State Honors Music Project. Auditions include an individual performance and an ensemble class taught
by a WSMA certified adjudicator. This year, nearly 1,250 students applied to audition for the privilege of being one of the 309 students selected for mem-bership in the three prestigious WSMA Middle Level State Honors ensembles.Music teachers, parents, administrators and the WSMA staff contribute time, talent and encourage-ment for every student involved in the Honors Project. Young musicians selected for these ensembles dis-cover new levels of individual and group performance. Most importantly, the effort and dedication required of each Honors participant results in a lifelong memory of their initiative, achievement and commitment to excellence as musicians and as our future leaders.

Regina Coeli Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina (1525-1594) Tetra/Continuo Music Corporation
This beautiful religious choral composition in Latin (motet), is from the Renaissance style period. Known as a Marian antiphon/hymn, it was composed to be sung during the seasons of Easter and Pentecost.
O queen of heaven, rejoice! For He whom you merited to bear, Has risen as He said. Pray for us to God. Alleluia!
Hark, I Hear the Harps Eternal arr. Alice Parker (b. 1925) Alfred Music Publishing
This piece is an arrangement of the early American shape note tune, Invitation. Shape note singing schools were established during the colonial era to provide instruction in choral singing and to improve congregational singing in church. The notation uses triangles, circles, rectangles and diamonds for different pitches of the musical scale and employs a system known as “fasola” for singing each pitch. Shape note singing is also sometimes called sacred harp singing; the term sacred harp referring to the human voice, the musical instrument that one is born with. Alice Parker captures the pure, rollicking joy of this style of singing.
Der Gang Zum Liebchen Johannes Brahms (1833-1897) Op. 31 no. 3 Public Domain
Johannes Brahms was one of the most important composers of the Romantic style period. Der Gang Zum Liebchen (The Way To His Sweetheart) is a setting of a poem by Josef Wenzig (1807-1876), and is filled with lush harmonies and soaring musical lines.
The moon shone down, I should hurry back to my sweetheart. How is she doing? Alas, she is losing hope, and laments and laments that she will never see me again while she lives! The moon went down, I hurried quickly so that no one would carry off my sweetheart. Coo, you doves, whirr, you breezes, so that no one will carry off my sweetheart, my sweetheart!
sam was a man Vincent Persichetti (1915-1987) from Two Cummings Choruses, op. 33 G. Schirmer, Inc.
Written in 1948, op. 33 represents the first of many settings of e.e cumming’s (1894-1962) poetry by Persichetti. Although the composer calls the setting sam was a man, the title of the poem is actually rain or hail, and is from 50 Poems published in 1940. The piece is short with rapid tempos, jazzy syncopation and dramatic dynamic contrasts.
We Are As One Mary Goetze Boosey and Hawks Music
This poem by Moses Jumper Jr., a Seminole Indian, expresses meaningful values and ideas that should be important to everyone: respect for all living things, the earth, and the passion for “being”.
Dubula arr. Stephen Hatfield (b. 1956) Boosey and Hawks Music
Dubula is a folk song of the Xhosa people of South Africa. As is true of many folk songs, the words do not translate effectively, as it is not the meaning of the text, but the sound and rhythm of the original language that is most important. The style is boisterous, energetic and open-throated.
The honeybird carries sour milk. It is no good for my child, so let us chase him away with a big bang!

Program
Valse Lyric William Himes Neil A Kjos Music Company
Valse Lyrique or “lyrical waltz” is in a typical A-B-A form, featuring two waltzes of contrasting style and tempo. The ballad-like “A” section is contrasted by a light and bouncy “B” section. Glorious melody, rich harmonies and rhythm interest are evident along with the composers’ objective to provide intuitive, contagious and lyrical melodies. Composer William Hines wrote “Valse Lyrique” at the request of his friend and mentor, E. Daniel Long.
Sinfonia in D Johann Stamitz arr. Green Carl Fischer LLC
The Sinfonia in D was originally composed for two oboes, two French Horns, two violins, viola and bass. Since the wind parts largely doubled the strings it was apparent that this music could be arranged for string orchestra. This movement from the Sinfonia is regarded as delightful music with sparkle and interest throughout. Johann Stamitz was the father of Karl Stamitz whose orchestral compositions are frequently performed today.
Pachabel’s Key Michael Daugherty Boosey and Hawks Music
Commissioned in 2002, this Michael Daugherty composition incorporates the famous Canon from Johann Pachebel’s Canon and Gigue in D along with claves providing a distinctive opening. Dedicated to the leadership of E. Daniel Long in music education, the well-known eight note bass line, accompanying a solo bassoon, joins the constant Latin percussion rhythmic figure. Daugherty chose the title in reference to the word “clave” which, in Spanish, means “key” (as in keyboard).
Slavonic Dance No. 3 Anton Dvorak arr. Isaac Alfred Music Publishing
The Slavonic Dances are a series of 16 orchestral pieces composed byAntonín Dvorák in 1878 and 1886 and published in two sets as Opus 46 and Opus 72 respectively. Originally written for piano four hands, the Slavonic Dances were inspired by Johannes Brahms’s own Hungarian Dances and were orchestrated at the request of Dvorák’s publisher soon after composition. The pieces, lively and overtly nationalistic, were well received at the time and today are among the composer’s most memorable works, occasionally making appearances in popular culture.

Fanfare, Ode and Festival Bob Margolis / Manhattan Beach MusicFanfare, Ode and Festival is based on music found in Danceries, a six-volume collection of dances published in 16th century France. From this massive anthology, American composer Bob Margolis selected three bransles, Renaissance dances performed by couples in either a line or a circle. Using one in each of the suite’s three movements, bransle simple, bransle gay and bransle de Champaigne, respectively, he scored them using decidedly 20th century orchestration techniques, creating a most interesting amalgamation of the very old and the contemporary.
With Quiet Courage Larry Daehn / Daehn PublicationsHer life was heroic, but without fanfare. She worked and hoped and inspired. She loved and was loved. Her life was a noble song of quiet courage.
With these words, Larry Daehn dedicated With Quiet Courage to the memory of his mother, Lois. He describes her as a woman who loved to sing and who, despite the loss of both legs due to diabetes, lived with nobility and quiet courage. These qualities are evident in this composition, which was written in the summer of 1995 and premiered by the U.S. Navy Band in our nation’s capital later that year.
Hebrides Suite Clare Grundman / Hal Leonard Publishing Co.The Hebrides comprise a widespread and diverse archipelago off the west coast of Scotland. Based on melodies found in folksong collector, arranger and performer Marjory Kennedy-Fraser’s Songs of the Hebrides, Hebrides Suite has been considered to be a masterpiece for young bands since its publication in 1962. The four airs used in Hebrides Suite reflect the everyday life of the island people:
The Peat-Fire Flame is a “tramping song”, with lyrics written by Songs of the Hebrides co-editor Kenneth MacLeod set to an old folksong he heard played on the bagpipes. The text refers to tramping “far away and o’er the moor” and to the dreams dreamt “by the light of the peat-fire flame; the light the hill-folk yearn for.” Written as a companion piece to The Road to the Isles, another tramping song, the pair makes perfect bookends to the suite’s interior movements.
Eriskay is a small island of only three square miles, off the coast of South Uist in the Outer Hebrides. “Thou’rt the music of my heart, harp of joy, harp of my heart, moon of guidance by night, strength and light thou’rt to me. Sad am I without thee” is the final stanza of the poignant An Eriskay Love Lilt.
The Gaels developed songs to help while away the countless hours spent in tedious, repetitive manual labor; Milking Song is an example of such a “labor song”. Milking songs, or “cow’s lullabies”, had the added benefit, or so it was believed, of relaxing the cows, thus helping them produce more milk.
The Road to the Isles is a road in the Highlands of Scotland which connects the town of Fort William to the port of Mallaig from where a ferry can be taken over the sea to the Hebridean island of Skye. It is also the subject of the well-known song on which the suite’s final movement is based.
Tricycle Andrew Boysen / Neil A Kjos Music CompanyTricycle was commissioned by Illinois’ Northshore School District for its All-City Band Festival. The title refers to both the event for which it was written and the piece’s structure. The festival involved the bands from three schools performing and working together as one, much as the three wheels of a tricycle work together to move forward. The music reflects this idea by having three themes. Each theme is introduced individually, and then all three are combined, coalescing into a single musical entity.
The Gallant Seventh John Phillip Sousa / Warner Brothers Music CorporationSousa wrote this march for the 7th Regiment, 107th Infantry, of the New York National Guard. Its conductor, Major Francis Sutherland, had been a cornet player in Sousa’s band prior to joining the Army during the First World War. It was written in 1922, and is Sousa’s only march that has two break strains.
