2003 MAC Football Prospectus - Notes

Top MAC Back Is Back:Michael Turner, Northern Illinois Univer-sity running back, began the 2002 seasonas a backup to Thomas Hammock. Wheninjury ended Hammock’s career early in theseason, Turner stepped in to rush for a MACsingle-season record 1,915 yards and fin-ished second in the nation with 159.6 rush-ing yards per game. This year, Turner getsa chance to prove himself nationally athome as the Huskies host Maryland fromthe ACC (Aug. 30) and Iowa State from theBig 12 (Sept. 27). Last year the Huskiesbeat Wake Forest, 42-41 in overtime, inDeKalb, and nearly won a road game atWisconsin, losing a 24-21 decision at theBig 10 school.

MAC Returns Strong Field of QBs:While defending divisional championsMarshall and Toledo have to replace de-parted quarterbacks Byron Leftwich andBrian Jones, respectively, several other topsignal callers are back. Among them areMiami’s Ben Roethlisberger, UCF’s RyanSchneider, Akron’s Charlie Frye and KentState’s Joshua Cribbs, , all in the East Di-vision. As well, Bowling Green’s JoshHarris and Northern Illinois’ Josh Haldiare back to lead their teams in the West Di-vision chase, as is Western Michigan’sChad Munson. Toledo will have its thirddifferent starter at QB in the last three years.Cedric Stevens (junior) and BruceGradowski (sophomore) are listed on theRocket depth chart going into spring ball.

Looking at 2003 Champions:Defending MAC Champion Marshall re-turns three second-team all-MAC defensivelinemen in Orlando Washington, JamusMartin and Toriano Brown. Offensively, while the Herd searches for a starting QB,two top wide receivers returns – first-teamall-MAC Darius Watts and honorable men-tion all-MAC Josh Davis. Watts is alreadythe league’s career leader in touchdown re-ceptions (36), needs 41 receptions to be-come the league’s career leader in recep-tions (has 195), and needs 569 receivingyards to become the all-time leader in re-ceiving yards (has 3,031).

Defending MAC West co-Champion To-ledo returns 13 starters, including eight ondefense and three on the offensive line. UT

does lose its QB and three starting receiv-ers. All-MAC OL Nick Kaczur and ErikFaasen are back as is all-league DB Bran-don Hefflin.

MAC West co-Champion Northern Illinoishas Turner and league Special Teams Playerof the Year Dan Sheldon returning to its of-fense, as well as Haldi at QB. The Huskiedefense features all-MAC players in DLTravis Moore, DB Randee Drew, OLBBrian Atkinson, ILB Nick Duffy. PK SteveAzar returns as a clutch performer and theleague’s active scoring leader with 266points.

First Year Review Is Excellent:The University of Central Florida estab-lished itself as a contending MAC team itsfirst year in the league last season. A 6-2league mark was good for second place inthe East behind 7-1 Marshall. UCF’s losseswere to Marshall (26-21) and Toledo (27-24). Golden Knights’ QB Ryan Schneiderfinished seventh nationally in passing effi-ciency with a touch non-league schedule thatincluded road games at Penn State and Ari-zona State, as well as a home game withSyracuse.

Scheduling the Best:The 2003 MAC schedule includes 10 I-Ahome games in MAC stadiums, with sevenof those against teams from BCS confer-ences – both league records. Peach BowlChampion Maryland plays at two MACcampuses – Northern Illinois (Aug. 30) andEastern Michigan (Sept. 27). Toledo willhost Insight Bowl winner Pittsburgh (Sept.20) and Western Michigan will host Conti-nental Tire Bowl winner Virginia (Sept. 13).Ohio’s first-ever Big Ten opponent to visitPeden Stadium, Minnesota, captured theMusic City Bowl last season.

The composite MAC schedule has the topfive teams in last year’s Big Ten race (OhioState, Iowa, Michigan, Penn State andPurdue) and the second through fifth finish-ers in the Big East (West Virginia, Pittsburgh,Virginia Tech and Boston College). In addi-tion, Northern Illinois plays at SEC WestDivision winner Alabama, which was ineli-gible for the post season.

The overall MAC schedule has contestsagainst Big Ten co-champion and OrangeBowl participant Iowa (Buffalo), MountainWest champion and Liberty Bowl partici-pant Colorado State (Miami) and Confer-ence USA co-champion and New OrleansBowl participant Cincinnati (Miami). De-fending league champion Marshall plays atSEC member Tennessee, which played inlast year’s Peach Bowl. Two MAC squads(Northern Illinois and Ohio) will tangle withBig 12 foe Iowa State, which played in lastseason’s Humanitarian Bowl.

Coaching Notes:Two first-year head coaches - Gregg Bran-don at Bowling Green and Brady Hoke atBall State - will guide their teams in theMAC West Division. All the remainingMAC teams, including the entire East Divi-sion, return their respective head coaches.Marshall head coach Bob Pruett is thewinningest active coach in the league with65 victories since the Herd joined the leaguein 1997. Pruett’s winning percentage of .833is the third best in MAC history behind the.886 by Ara Parseghian (39-6-1 at Miami,1951-55) and .855 by Doyt Perry (49-9-5 atBowling Green, 1955-64). Pruett is 10th all-time in MAC-only wins with 42 and West-ern Michigan’s Gary Darnell is 14th with31 MAC-only triumphs. Darnell’s .580 win-ning percentage is the 15th best ever in MAChistory for a head coach with four or moreyears.

Zips Notes

Akron returns one of the most talented and veteran quarterbacks in the league in seniorCharlie Frye. Last year, Frye completed 65.8% of his passes (250-380), the third highestrate in the league. His career pass completion percentage of 62.8% ranks fifth all-time inMAC history going into the 2003 season.

Akron’s running game produced 25 touchdowns last year, the fourth highest total in theleague. Bob Hendry returns to pace the Zips’ ground attack as his 92.8 rushing yards pergame (1,021 total) last season was seventh in the league. He also had eight rushing scores.

The Zips’ offense returns intact with all 11 starters. In 2002, UA averaged 27 points and404 yards of total offense per game, ranking seventh and sixth, respectively, in the league. The 2003 squad set a single-season school record with 4,852 yards of total offense.

WR Miquel Irvin set a school record with 53 receptions last year. Irvin will combine withMatt Cherry (35 receptions in an injury filled season) and QB-transplant to WR NickSparks to form a talented receiving corp that seasoned QB Charlie Frye can select from.

Despite the talents of WR and a veteran QB, establishing the running game will be theZips’ game plan. Last year, UA was 4-2 when rushing for over 150 yards and 0-3 whenpassing for more than 300 yards.

In the last four games of 2002, Akron’s defense held opponents to an average of 16.8points per game. After allowing 259.8 rushing yards per game the first four contests, UAgave up just 121.1 yards per game the last eight contests of 2002. The 34 rushing yardsallowed versus Buffalo were the lowest by a UA opponent since 1989.

Key to UA’s defense continuing to improve are performances of veterans DT MarquesHayes, LBs Chase Blackburn and Dionte Earl, DE Dwayne LeFall, CB Rickey McKenzieand FS Domenik Hixon. Golden Flashes Notes

Coming off a 3-9 season last fall, Kent State looks to return to its form of 2001 when theGolden Flashes posted their first winning season (6-5) since 1987.

Despite battling injuries last year, QB Joshua Cribbs led the team in rushing (1,057 yards)and also finished fifth in the MAC with 105.7 rushing yards per game. Cribbs missed twofull games with a pulled hamstring and played a half or less in three others due to theinjury. Cribbs has back-to-back seasons with 1,000 rushing yards and 1,000 passing yardsand could become the first Division I player with three such seasons if he meets thosesame numbers in 2003.

KSU’s running game could also be bolstered with the return of a healthy David Alston. Asecond-team all-MAC selection in 2001, Alston was hampered by an ankle injury lastyear and rushed just 32 times for 169 yards (4.9 ypc). In 2001 he gained 633 yards on 119carries (5.3 ypc) and six TDs.

Three starters return on the offensive line, including both of those on the left side - tackleJason Andrews and guard Travis Smith, both juniors. Also back is senior center SteveSmith.

A broken leg to ILB Anthony Henriquez caused him to miss nearly half of the 2002season. A key to the middle of the Golden Flashes’ defense, Henriquez made 101 stops in2001. He broke his leg in last year’s season opener versus New Hampshire Aug. 29 andcame back to play Oct. 16 against Ohio. Another LB looking for a healthy season is EricMahl. Mahl, who teams with Henriquez at ILB, missed the second half of the 2002campaign with a broken wrist. Mahl led the team in tackles per game with 8.6.

Sophomore PK Travis Mayle earned freshman All-America honorable mention fromrivals.com last year after hitting 12-14 FG and 22-24 PATs.

Head coach Dean Pees has added defensive coordinator to his title for the 2003 season.Pees has coached defense his entire career, including 15 years as defensive coordinator atFindlay, Miami, Toledo and Michigan State. KSU will also have a new offensive coordi-nator in Doug Martin, who spent the last seven seasons as the offensive coordinator atEast Carolina.

Kent State starters and key reserves missed a total of 96 “player-games” last season due toinjury.

Thundering Herd NotesMarshall finished No. 19 in the final USA TODAY/ESPN Coaches poll and No. 24 in thefinal Associated Press poll last year.

Marshall will have to find a quarterback to replace three-year starter Byron Leftwich, who led the Herd to bowl victories during his tenure. Heir apparent is Stan Hill, whosparked a late-season win over MAC rival Miami (Ohio) last year with four touchdownpasses (25-39, 292 yards) and the game-winning score via a rush with under a minute togo. JUCO Graham Gochneaur, a redshirt last year, will also get a look.

The most talented spots on the roster are wide receiver, running back, tight end and defen-sive line. The offensive line, with the loss of three starters (Steve Sciullo, Steve Perrettaand Jeff Edwards) , and secondary, with the loss of two talented starters (S Chris Crockerand CB Yancey Satterwhite), will be faced with filling voids. The team must also replaceall-conference punter and placekicker Curtis Head.

On the 2003 squad will be returning first-team all-MAC selection Darius Watts (WR)and second-team all-MAC selections Jamus Martin (DL) and Toriano Brown (DL) andhonorable mention all-MAC Josh Davis (WR).

Watts is already the league’s career leader in touchdown receptions (36), needs 41 recep-tions to become the league’s career leader in receptions (has 195), and needs 569 receiv-ing yards to become the all-time leader in receiving yards (has 3,031).

Marshall’s GMAC Bowl win over Louisville marked the program’s fifth consecutivebowl triumph. Also included are Motor City Bowl wins in 1998, 1999 and 2000 and aGMAC Bowl victory in 2001.

Byron Leftwich ended his career as the MAC all-time leader in total offense (12,084),passing yards (11,903), pass completions (939) and pass completion percentage (65.1%).

Bob Pruett’s 64 wins as a MAC head coach rank him tied for sixth all-time among leaguementors. Pruett is tied with Bill Mallory (Miami 1969-73 and Northern Illinois 1980-83).Trevor Rees, with 66 wins at Kent State from 1951-63, is fifth.

Bronco Notes

The Broncos feature the return of the MAC Defensive Player-of-the-Year in DE JasonBabin. As a junior, Babin finished second in the nation in tackles for a loss (26) andfourth in pass sacks (15). He also led the team in solo tackles (72), blocked two punts onspecial teams and caught three passes (all for first downs). Babin was honored as anhonorable mention All-American by The Sporting News.

WMU’s 2002 defensive squad led the MAC in total defense (330.7 ypg allowed) and wassecond in pass defense (161.5). WMU also allowed the fewest opponent first downs (217)and was second in opponent third down conversions allowed (35.7%). A new defensivecoordinator takes over in Dick Bumpus, who spent the last four seasons at Houston.

The Broncos also return Jason Feldpausch who had a knack for making big plays fromhis safety position. Feldpausch stripped the ball from a Toledo RB and returned a fumble59 yards for a touchdown, blocked a field goal versus Ball State and forced a MAC-highfive fumbles.

Offensively, QBs Chad Munson and Jon Drach return as well as a strong group of re-ceivers. Four seniors at WR are back - Kendrick Mosley, Antonio Thomas, BrandonJohnson and Chris Chestnut. Add 1,000-plus yard rusher Phil Reed with that group andthe WMU offense could improve on its 25 ppg and 363 ypg averages of 2002.

WMU had four losses by four or less points last year and played a schedule that included#5 Virginia Tech, #7 Michigan, #23?#25 Bowling Green and Purdue.

The Broncos’ special teams produced four touchdowns off returns last year. Tyrone Walkerreached the end zone twice on kickoffs and Kendrick Mosley two times on punt returns.Walker tied a school record with his 100-yard return of the opening kickoff versus East-ern Michigan.

WMU’s 35-10 win at Central Michigan was the Broncos’ first win in Mount Pleasantsince 1973, ending a 0-12-1 futility streak.
