m a ny considered a sleeping giant, Saban has transformed the LSU footballp ro g ram into one that wins championships, while graduating players atthe same time.

Equipped with a plan that gives his players the best chance to be suc-cessful on the field as well as in the classro o m ,S a b a n ’s impact on the pro-g ram has been immediate and it’s been powerful.

In just three years as LSU’s head coach, S a b a n ’s on-field success hasbeen nothing short of re m a r k a b l e , as he’s guided the Tigers to 26 victories,a pair of bowl wins, including one in the Bowl Championship Series, a n dthe 2001 Southeastern Conference title. The Tigers have also played inback-to-back New Ye a r ’s Day bowls for the first time since the 1960’s .

On top of LSU’s success on the gridiro n , the Tigers are being re c o g-nized for their efforts in the classro o m .C u r re n t l y, all 22 of the Tiger seniorsf rom the 2002 team are on pace to graduate within the next 12 months, while Rodney Reed earned First Team Academic All-America honors andB radie James was awa rded an $18,000 post-graduate scholarship from theNational Football Foundation last ye a r.

Off the field, Saban and his players are active in the community, p ro-moting goodwill by participating in such things as community serv i c ep rojects and visiting hospitals and schools in the Baton Rouge area on aregular basis. Saban has also worn the hat of fundraiser during his stay inBaton Rouge as he spearheaded an effort that raised more than $15 mil-lion for a state-of-the-art academic center for student-athletes. The newCox Communications Academic Center for Student-Athletes is part ofS a b a n ’s plan to give his players the best opportunity to be successful whent h ey finish their football care e r s . The center, which spans 54,000 squaref e e t , is the best of its kind and features 100 computers, a 1,000-seat audi-t o r i u m , a libra ry and a communications center for training student-ath-l e t e s .

Saban became the 31st head coach of the LSU Tigers on Nov e m b e r3 0 ,1 9 9 9 , after five years as head coach at Michigan State.

He didn’t waste anytime making his impact felt as he guided a teamcoming off back-to-back losing seasons to an 8-4 mark and a win ov e r

1 5 t h - ranked Georgia Tech in the Peach Bowl in 2000 to rekindle the fire ofa proud football tradition in Baton Rouge.

S a b a n ’s influence on the Tigers went much further in 2001 as he ledLSU to the school’s first outright SEC title since 1986 with a 31-20 winover second-ranked Tennessee in the SEC Championship game.

A year after losing two of the most prolific offensive players in schoolh i s t o ry in quarterback Rohan Dav ey and wide receiver Josh Reed, S a b a nused a tenacious defense coupled with a steady offense to lead the 2002Tigers to an 8-5 ov e rall mark and the school’s second straight appeara n c ein a New Ye a r ’s Day bowl. LSU scored a school-re c o rd 30 or more pointsin six straight games in 2002, while the Tiger defense held the oppositionto less than 275 ya rds in each of the first six games of the ye a r.

A trademark of Saban-coached team’s has been their ability to ov e r-come adversity and still effectively perform on the field. In 2001, the Ti g e r shad to ov e rcome the loss of Dav ey and running back LaBrandon To e f i e l din the SEC Championship game, while last year LSU prevailed despitelosing starting quarterback Matt Mauck midway through the season.

Beating Tennessee to win the league title in 2001 is one thing, but thefashion in which Saban and the Tigers did so speaks volumes on theimpact he has had on his squads. P l aying without two of their offensivestandouts in Dav ey and To e f i e l d , not only did the Tigers respond toS a b a n ’s challenge to step up, but they were dominant, outscoring theh i g h - p o w e red Vols offense 21-3 in the second half. L S U ’s defense allowedjust 50 ya rds rushing.

A year later, LSU found itself in a very similar situation, losing Mauck,Toefield and free safety Damien James in consecutive weeks. LSU ov e r-came that adversity and found itself heading into the final week of the2002 season with a chance at reaching the SEC Championship game. O n l ya last-minute comeback by Arkansas kept the Tigers from winning its sec-ond consecutive SEC Western Division title and participating in thel e a g u e ’s championship game.

Losing players such as Mauck, D av ey and Toefield and still finding away to be successful on the field has been a trademark of Saban-coachedt e a m s . Teaching the players to trust and believe in each other is a chara c-teristic that Saban has branded on his squads. The philosophy of “out of

yourself and into the team”is something thatSaban instills on a daily basis into his squad. H ealso preaches to his teams to play for 60 minutes,to become a dominant team on ev e ry play of ev e ryg a m e , and not wo r ry about what the score b o a rdre a d s . The players re s p o n d .

That couldn’t have been more true than lastye a r ’s “ B l u e g rass Mira c l e ”as Marcus Randall’s 75-ya rd Hail Mary pass to Dev e ry Henderson as timee x p i red gave the Tigers an unlikely 33-30 win ov e rK e n t u c ky in one of the wildest finishes to a footballgame in LSU history.

In three ye a r s , Saban impact on LSU footballcan be seen on a daily basis. Whether it’s compet-ing to the final horn on the football field, p e r f o r m-ing in the classroom or making a difference in thec o m m u n i t y, LSU football has been tra n s f o r m e dinto the complete pro g ra m .

S a b a n ’s first three years with the Ti g e r sincludes winning a conference title to go with back-to-back New Ye a r ’sD ay bowl games. H o w ev e r, those are just a few steps for the Tigers asSaban continues to re s t o re the winning tradition to an LSU pro g ram thatis on the verge of being a fixture among the nation’s elite in college foot-b a l l .

S a b a n ’s success at LSU shouldn’t come as a surprise considering thesuccess he had rebuilding a Michigan State pro g ram that was riddled withscholarship limitations. In no time, Saban had the Spartans ranked in thetop 10 and playing in a New Ye a r ’s Bowl games.

In 2001, the Tigers closed the year by winning six straight games, t h elongest streak since the 1973 team won nine stra i g h t . In addition, the 2001team became the first LSU squad to win its final six games of a seasonsince 1961, when the Tigers won 10 straight games to finish at 10-1. T h eTigers finished the 2001 season ranked No. 7 in the nation in theAssociated Press poll and No. 8 in the ESPN/USA To d ay Coaches poll, t h efirst Top 10 ranking for the pro g ram since 1987.

Known for his defensive pro w e s s ,S a b a n ’s LSU offense shattered sev-e ral school re c o rds in 2001 as the Tigers scored at least 30 points eighttimes and went over the 40-point mark four times. LSU set six single-sea-son re c o rds on offense, including ya rds per game (451.5) and passingya rds per contest (298.5). LSU ranked second in the SEC and 11th nation-ally in total offense and passing offense.

For his efforts, Saban was named one of seven finalists for the BearB ryant National Coach of the Year Awa rd and both the Atlanta To u c h d o w nClub and the Birmingham News recognized him as the SEC Coach of theYe a r.

His final Spartan team finished with a No. 7 ranking in the nationand became the first Michigan State team to win 10 games in one seasonsince the Spartans’1965 national championship team.

S a b a n ’s 1999 Michigan State team defeated Notre Dame, M i c h i g a n ,Ohio State and Penn State all in the same year for the first time since 1965and re c o rded six wins at home for the first time since 1912.

Saban has long been rev e red in football coaching circles as one of thekeen minds of the game, h aving coached under some of the best footballtechnicians in the country on both the college and professional lev e l s .

He built his reputation as an assistant coach, but as a head coach hehas shown the ability to put together a total pro g ra m , one that produces inbig numbers on both sides of the football while stressing discipline andresponsibility off the field.

“ H e ’s a first-rate person and he’s a marvelous football coach,”said BillPo l i a n , the president of the NFL’s Indianapolis Colts, who is considere done of the premier minds in professional football. “He brings all the rightvalues to the position and to the job. He believes in an exciting and up-tempo offense and yet his teams are always terrifically sound and veryp hy s i c a l .”

S a b a n ’s background in football is rich and va r i e d . He coached in theNFL under Bill Belichick at Cleveland and under Je r ry Glanville atH o u s t o n . He is a protégé of George Perles at Michigan State and EarleBruce at Ohio State. He got his start under venerable Washington coachDon James as a graduate assistant at Kent State.

“ N o - n o n s e n s e ”is one description of his style of coaching, but consis-tent and exacting might be more pre c i s e . “ H a rd wo r k ”can be attached toa ny successful pro g ra m , but also working smart is a trademark of Sabancoached teams. The keys to Saban’s success are founded on aggressive anddisciplined leadership and a philosophy of personal responsibility both onthe football field and in the classro o m .

“ B a s i c a l l y, if any b o dy doesn’t want to work hard or be committed tothe way he’s committed, then they ’re going to have a problem with him,”

said Belichick, coach of the 2001 Super Bowl Champion New EnglandPa t r i o t s .“ N o w, if they like to wo r k ,t h ey wo n ’t have any problems at all.”

Saban is a communicator who gets the best out of his playe r s , a coachwho can guarantee that a player willing to dedicate himself to the pro g ra mwill maximize his talents.

“Instead of looking at the ov e rall picture , he gives his players some-thing they can really lash their teeth into, which allows them to play morea g g re s s i v e l y,”said Dean Pe e s , the head coach at Kent State who served asa defensive coordinator under Saban. “ T h e re are a lot of guys who cand raw up defenses in the dirt and draw X’s and O’s . The question is whatlittle things can you find to help each player play his position? T h a t ’s onething Nick is good at.”

Saban has a career win-loss re c o rd of 69-38-1 for a winning perc e n t-age of .650, a total that includes five years as head coach at Michigan State( 1 9 9 5 - 9 9 ) ,t h ree seasons at LSU and one year at Toledo (1990). He also hasextensive experience in the NFL, h aving coached the secondary of theHouston Oilers for two seasons (1988-89) and having served as defensivec o o rdinator for the Cleveland Browns for four seasons (1991-94).

During his five-year tenure as head coach at Michigan State, S a b a nt u t o red four first-team All-Americans and 10 NFL draft picks.

The 51-ye a r-old Saban returned to Michigan State following four sea-sons as the Cleveland Bro w n s ’ defensive coordinator from 1991-94. T h eB rowns went from allowing the most points in the NFL prior to Saban’sa r r i val to allowing the fewest points in 1994. His defensive unit allowed aleague-low 21 touchdowns and 204 points in 1994, the sixth-fewest pointss u r re n d e red in NFL history at the time.

Saban previously served as head coach at the University of To l e d ow h e re he guided the Rockets to a 9-2 ov e rall re c o rd in 1990, including as h a re of the Mid-America Conference title at 7-1. The Rockets ra n k e damong the NCAA leaders in both total defense (12th at 284.8 ya rds) andscoring defense (16th at 16.2 points). In his rookie season as a head coach,Toledo missed posting an undefeated re c o rd by only five points.

He began his first stint in the NFL with the Houston Oilers as thes e c o n d a ry coach from 1988-89. The Oilers ranked among the AFC leadersin interceptions in both 1988 (tied for second with 22) and 1989 (fourthwith 21).

As secondary coach and defensive coord i n a t o r, Saban played an inte-g ral part in helping Michigan State to three postseason bowl appeara n c e sf rom 1983-87, including a Big Ten championship in 1987 and a 20-17 tri-umph over Southern California in the 1988 Rose Bowl. The Spartans ledthe nation in rushing defense in 1987, allowing only 61.2 ya rds per game, and ranked second in scoring defense, permitting 12.4 points.

His college coaching credits also include stops at the U. S. N ava lA c a d e my (1982), Ohio State (1980-81), West Vi rginia (1978-79), S y ra c u s e(1977) and Kent State (1975-76). While coaching the secondary at OhioS t a t e , he helped produce four NFL draft choices.

He began his coaching career in 1973 as a graduate assistant at hisalma mater Kent State. A defensive back for the Golden Flashes fro m1 9 7 0 - 7 2 , Saban played in the 1972 Tangerine Bowl against Ta m p a . He alsopicked up two letters as a shortstop on the Kent State baseball team.

Born October 31, 1 9 5 1 , in Fa i r m o n t , W. Va . , Saban earned his bache-l o r ’s degree in business from Kent State in 1973 and his master’s in sportsa d m i n i s t ration in 1975. Jimbo FisherOffensive Coordinator/Quarterbacks

One of the nation’s topoffensive minds,JimboFisher enters his fourthseason as LSU’s offensive

coordinator and quarterbacks coach. In threeyears with the Tigers,Fisher’s offense has setnumerous school records while developing thereputation as being one of the SEC's mostpotent units.

Last year, with a pair of first-time startersat quarterback in Matt Mauck and MarcusRandall,Fisher guided an LSU offense to aver-age 350 yards per contest and nearly 25 pointsper game.LSU scored 30 or more points seventimes in 2002,including a school-record tyingmark of six straight contests with at least 30points.

In three years with the Tigers,Fisher hascoached three LSU quarterbacks who havegone on to become NFL Draft picks.Last year, former Tigers Rohan Davey, Josh Booty, andCraig Nall, all of which learned under Fisher, were on active NFL rosters.

Perhaps Fisher's most impressive seasonwith the Tigers came in 2001 as he developedDavey, then a first-time starter as well, into oneof the nation's premier signal callers. In 2001,Davey set a total of six school-records duringthe regular-season and then broke anotherseven Sugar Bowl or LSU bowl records in theTigers’47-34 win over Illinois. For the year,Davey completed 217 of 367 passes for 3,347yards and 18 touchdowns. He connected on 31of 53 passes for 444 yards and three scores inthe Sugar Bowl.Throw in Josh Reed’s 94 recep-tions for an SEC record 1,740 yards and LSU’soffense had two of the nation’s most explosiveplayers.Reed was named the winner of theBiletnikoff Award, the honor that goes to thenation’s top wide receiver, while Davey was aSecond Team All-SEC selection.

Stan HixonAssociate HeadCoach/Wide Receivers

Stan Hixon continuedto make his mark as anoutstanding receivers coachlast year as the Tigers,

despite the loss of All-America wideout JoshReed, assembled one of the SEC’s top receivingcorps in 2002.

In his third season with the Tigers in 2002,Hixon developed first-time wideout DeveryHenderson into one of the SEC's top receivingthreats, while Michael Clayton continued toemerge as one of the league's top all-aroundwide receivers.Clayton earned Second TeamAll-SEC honors in 2002,while Henderson wasnamed the league's player of the week afterracking up 201 receiving yards, including the75-yard last second TD dubbed the "BluegrassMiracle",in LSU's 33-30 win over Kentucky.

In his first year with the Tigers,Hixonhelped develop Reed into a star in the SEC.Reed ranked first in the SEC and sixth national-ly with 102.5 yards receiving a contest. For theyear, Reed caught 65 passes for 1,127 yards and10 touchdowns, the second highest total inschool history. Reed did all of this despite play-ing his first full season at wide receiver aftershifting from his original position of tailbackduring the 1999 season. For his efforts,Reedwas a consensus First Team All-SEC selection.

Hixon’s success coaching wide receiversshould not come as a surprise as he developedsome of the most prolific receivers in GeorgiaTech history from 1995-1999.

Hixon, who joined LSU in December of1999,coached All-Atlantic Coast Conferencereceivers Kelly Campbell and Dez White atGeorgia Tech in 1999.Campbell in 1999 wasNo.2 in the ACC and 12th nationally in receiv-ing yards per game (100.5) and he set schoolrecords for receptions (69), receiving yards(1,105) and touchdowns (10).

Prior to the emergence of Campbell andW h i t e , Hixon tutored the receiving duo ofH a rv ey Middleton, who re - w rote Tech's re c e i v-ing re c o rds at the time, and Derrick Steagall, who ranks as one of the Yellow Jackets' care e rl e a d e r s .

Already a Louisiana Legend and one of the greatestcollege baseball coaches of all time, J. Stanley“Skip”Bertman augmented his impressive list of achieve-

ments in his first season as LSU’s director of athletics. While supervising the Tigers’magnificent progress on theplaying fields, he began to implement measures necessaryto realize his vision of building the LSU athletics depart-ment into the best in the country. Bertman’s bold andinnovative plans promise to keep the Tigers among thenation’s elite in all phases of collegiate athletics.

LSU’s programs enjoyed remarkable success underBertman’s direction in 2001-02, as 18 of the Tigers’ 20sports participated in post-season competition. T h a taccomplishment, along with improved graduation rates, increased team grade point averages and the constructionof new academic facilities, foreshadow even more signifi-cant deeds in the second season of Bertman’s tenure.

Bertman was named LSU's athletics director onJanuary 19, 2001. With Bertman, LSU gained an athleticsdirector who provides the leadership and experience nec-essary to manage the Tigers' nearly $35 million budget.

Bertman guided LSU to five NCAA baseball titles, andhis teams drew huge crowds to venerable Alex BoxStadium, as the Tigers led the nation in attendance in eachof his final six seasons (1996-2001).

He also served as head coach of the 1996 U.S. Olympicteam which captured the bronze medal in Atlanta.

Bertman continues to be honored for his remarkablecoaching tenure,as he was inducted in June,2002,into theLouisiana Sports Hall of Fame. He is scheduled to beinducted into the American Baseball Coaches AssociationHall of Fame in January, 2003.

In a Baseball America poll released in January, 1999,Bertman was voted the second greatest college baseballcoach of the 20th century, trailing only Rod Dedeaux ofSouthern California. Bertman and Dedeaux are the onlycoaches to win five CWS titles.

He had previously earned stellar recognition as one ofthe nation's brightest assistant coaches while at theUniversity of Miami (Fla.) for eight seasons (1976-83).Before working at Miami, Bertman was renowned for hiscoaching excellence. In 11 seasons at Miami Beach HighSchool, he directed the Hi-Tides to a state championshipand two runners-up finishes. He was named Florida'sCoach of the Year on three occasions.

In 1975, Bertman coached at Miami-Dade Downtown, leaving after one season to join legendary head coach RonFraser at Miami. The move was a homecoming of sorts, asBertman spent his collegiate playing days with theHurricanes as an outfielder and catcher from 1958-60. Heearned his B.A. in health and physical education fromMiami in 1961 and received his master’s degree from UMin 1964.

Bertman and his wife Sandy are the parents of fourdaughters -- Jan, Jodi, Lisa and Lori. The Bertmans havetwo grandchildren -- Sophie Faith and Isaac Stanley, thechildren of Emile and Lori Bertman Guirard.

Bertman’s unyielding desire to succeed drove him to the pinnacle of his profession, and his astute knowledge of thegame -- obtained from over 40 years of coaching -- combinedwith his steadfast determination and irrepressible enthusiasmtransformed LSU Baseball into the nation's premier program.
