"To be the best, you must play the best," says Mistri of his schedulingphilosophy. Fullerton annually opens the season with a Labor Day WeekendFILA Tournament that typically features teams boasting recent NCAAplayoff appearances. The Titans always play UCLA at least one each seasonand this year they play both Cal and Stanford in the Bay Area.

Since the stadium was erected for the 1992 season, the Titans' overallrecord is 118-58-11 (.660) with no losing seasons. In the last three seasonsthe Titans are 43-16-3 ( .718). And with better players has come the influenceof professional soccer, bringing both plusses and minuses. Products of theTitans' men's program are now scattered on numerous professional rostersand Brian Dunseth and Joe DiGiamarino were members of the 2000 U.S.Olympic team, giving Mistri four Olympians including soccer Hall of FamerRick Davis (at Damien HS) and former Titan Mike Fox.

"I'm OK with the professional situation," says Mistri, who has seenseveral stars leave for pay before their eligibility had expired. "It's an outletand a boost for soccer. It's part of what we are about."

The Titans reached a new zenith last Spring when senior DuncanOughton, who already had graduated in seven semesters, was selected in thefirst round of the MLS draft by the Columbus Crew. Oughton also was CalState Fullerton's male scholar-athlete of the year for 2000-01.

Mistri, who is surpassed only by fencing Coach Heizaburo Okawa(22nd season) in campus seniority, is ranked No. 22 in victories among activeDiv. I head coaches and his .596 winning percentage puts him in the top 50.He boasts five trips to the NCAA playoffs in the past eight years with a 7-6-1 record. His best season was in 1993 with a 16-7 mark as Fullerton won threesuccessive road playoff matches and reached the Final Four at Davidson, NC.Mistri's 1986 team won the Pacific Coast Athletic Association championshipto earn him his first NCAA trip.

He has coached dozens of professional players at Fullerton includingU.S. Olympian and National Team pool player Mike Fox, who also played forthe Wichita Wings (MISL); Bob Ammann of the Edmonton Brickmen, LosAngeles Salsa (APSL) and a team in Neuchatel, Switzerland; and LewisGarcia of the Los Angeles Kickers. More recent professional players includeMLS veteran goalkeeper Mike Ammann, now of D.C. United, who began hisprofessional career with a stint with Charlton, a First Division team inEngland; Paul McDonnell, Ken Hesse and Ricky Rodriguez with the 1997Anaheim Splash of the Continental Indoor Soccer League and recent MLSplayers Brad Wilson, Joe DiGiamarino, Peter Lak, Joey Franchino and BrianDunseth. Antonio Martinez (Dallas) and Colby Jackson (New York/NewJersey) both were selected in the 2000 MLS draft and Martinez is a regularwith Dallas. And now Oughton is a significant player for Columbus.

PERSONAL FILE: Mistri attended the University of Bologna in Italybefore coming to Southern California, where he graduated from Cal PolyPomona in 1970. He received his U.S. Soccer Federation "B" coachinglicense in 1973 and his "A" license in 1976. Mistri was at the helm of one ofthe top high school programs in Damien of LaVerne. In a 10-year stint, Mistriposted a 190-40-14 record while participating in the CIF playoffs nine times. Two of his top players were Mike Hunter and Rick Davis. Hunter played forthe Los Angeles Lazers in the MISL and Davis debuted at 19 years of age forthe New York Cosmos of the NASL and was the captain of the U.S. NationalTeam along with being a U.S. Olympian in 1984 and 1988. Al and his wife,Nikki, live in Fullerton. They have two adult children -- Michelle, a graduateof UC Santa Barbara, and Jeffrey, a graduate of Cal State Fullerton.

Al Mistri is in his thirddecade as men's soccer coachat Cal State Fullerton yet hemaintains the passion andcommitment to improving theprogram that he had in hisrookie season in 1981. As apart-time Titan coach whilestill teaching at Damien HighSchool in LaVerne, he keptthe program vibrant in the1980s. His appointment to afull-time coaching positionand the construction of TitanStadium in the 1990s allowedhim to establish the programas a perennial national titlecontender. And now in thenew century his aim is to in-crease the presence of Titan soccer in the community.

"We've put the men's soccer program on the map, so to speak, the last 10 years and now it's time we make it a more concrete factorin the university and the community," said Mistri, who has compiledan impressive 229-150-31 record while playing the strongest compe-tition he could schedule.

"We've brought in and developed quality players and alwaysplayed an exciting brand of soccer. A wide-open style has been ourtrademark and now there's an outlet for our players to play profession-ally. We've had eight or nine players at a time making a living atsoccer. We've also reached for a unique audience that includes a lotof first-generation college students."

Mistri will have even more energy and time to devote to hisprogram in 2001 now that he has relinquished control of the women'sprogram that he founded in 1993.

"This is the first time since 1992 that I can worry about just onething," said Mistri. "We've got sufficient funding and staffing so thatwe can finally see all the players we want to see in recruiting. I havetwo ex-Titan assistants on the staff -- Bob Ammann is from the 1980sand Eddie Soto is from the 1990s. I think it's another part of thestability of the program. We are well beyond just being survivorshere."

Titan soccer has long been successful on the pitch with an all-time Div. I winning percentage of just under .600 (291-190-44, .595).But the support and respect for the program hasn't been as good. Therewere five head coaches during the six seasons prior to Mistri's arrival.Even then the team seldom got new uniforms and the laundry was donein the Mistri residence.

But the 54-year-old native of Bologna, Italy, can see tangibleprogress. Local bus rides have given way to flights for tournamentappearances across the country. The Titans go to New Jersey (Rutgers)this year to continue a trend of East Coast trips to Vermont, Virginiaand South Carolina in the past few years. They've also competed intournaments in Texas, Kentucky, Colorado and Washington in thepast seven seasons as well as taken almost annual trips to USD andUCLA.

The need to merely reload, not rebuild, is thesign of a successful, stable intercollegiate athleticprogram. And, because he has built the latter, CalState Fullerton men's soccer Coach Al Mistri isn'toverly concerned about how significant rosterlosses from his NCAA playoff team of last seasonwill affect the Titans' prospects for 2001.

"Because of the degree of success we haveachieved, I personally feel good about this year'steam as well," said Mistri. "We expect to competefor a national title every year and we won't hidebehind our losses. We demand these expectationsof ourselves and lacking experience is just an addedobstacle.

"We recruited well and we'll just have to bepatient. We expect to be good and strive to be goodevery year. But it's hard to say how things willwork out -- that's the nature of the beast."

The Titans lost Mountain Pacific Sports Fed-eration Pacific Division Player of the Year DuncanOughton as a first-round draft choice of the Co-lumbus Crew of the Major League of Soccer. Hehad more than twice as many goals (17) as anyother Titan in a 15-6-1 season and the runnerupscorers, Art Ramirez and Ricky Melendez, wereseniors as well. At the other end of the pitch, theTitans lost all 2,104 minutes of their goalkeepingcrew with junior Sean Rockwell committing himself to medicalschool, sophomore Josh Saunders transferring to California andsenior Scott Alexander graduating.

"We have all the confidence in the world in Sam Reynoldsas our goalkeeper this year," said Mistri of the 6-foot redshirt fresh-man from Davis, who sat out last season after enjoying a prepcareer that saw him lose only one match in three years. "Andbacking him up we have an outstanding freshman in Scott Wilsonfrom South Torrance High School and Jeff McKeever, who is fromMater Dei High and played two seasons at the University of Tulsa.

"Sean is to be commended for his commitment to academ-ics. He just couldn't work around his biology labs and his pre-med studies."

2001 SEASON PREVIEW

The Titans do return four starters, mostly on thedefensive side. A pair of All-MPSF selections -- first-team Ray Ramirez and honorable men-tion Keith Buckley -- are the senior leaders ofthe squad. Ramirez has national team experi-ence and professional potential. The leadingreturning scorer is junior David Dischner, whohad 6 goals and 3 assists last season for 15 pointsin 20 starts."Dischner clearly is an offensive force," saidMistri. "He started several matches for us as afreshman in 1999 and he has scored somesignificanat goals in his two seasons."We hope Walter Camargo can realize his po-tential this season and be the kind of player hewas as a senior in high school," said Mistri ofthe senior who transferred in a few years ago."And we picked up a seasoned player in BrianTreat, who has one year to play after transfer-ring from Fullerton JC and Culver-StocktonCollege in Missouri."Other returning lettermen are Jason Clifford, asophomore from Huntington Beach; TimDonnelly, a junior midfielder from Long Beach;Sean Giudice, a 6-foot-2 sophomore forwardfrom Davis; sophomore forward Hector Orellanafrom East Los Angeles, junior midfielder Matt

Terry from La Habra Heights; and sophomore forward BrentWhitfield from Long Beach.

But newcomers must come through under pressure. Mistripoints to Cypress College transfer Adriano Lima and Irvine Val-ley College transfer Cameron McKinnon as well as freshmen Ja-son Ashurst from Stockdale High in Bakersfield, Brent Barnesfrom Capistrano Valley High and Andrew Sam from London,England, as the most promising going into training camp. Healso is anxious to see in person Jyrki Kylahelko, a defender fromFinland who sought out the Titans' program.

"We still have a very tough schedule, although we don't have10 road matches in a row as last year," said Mistri. "We play 60per cent of the 'Pac 5' in a span of two weeks with matches againstCal and Stanford in the Bay Area and one at UCLA. We openwith Clemson, which is a national title possibility, and play St.John's and Rutgers, which have recently beenin the NCAA tournament.

"But I'm most excited about launch-ing the Big West Conference schedule. We finally are in an established con-ference and playing soccer. There'sreally only one other true conferencein the West playing soccer and that'sthe West Coast Conference. Ev-erything else was a conglomerate - -the Pac-10 and the Mountain West, for example, -- groups that really don't

want soccer. We have a chance to be a nationally competitive con-ference and we look forward to the opportunity."

Handicapping the new alignment is risky at best, but Mistri isa willing prognosticator.

"UC Irvine is fully funded and will be very difficult for us.They have that 'UC' brand to brandish. UC Riverside has all theingredients to be competitive right off the bat. Cal State Northridgewill be vastly improved and UC Santa Barbara and Cal Poly arepotential spoilers."

The Titans open the season with their annual FILA Labor Dayweekend classic which features Clemson, Cal and Loyola of Mary-land. In road tourneys they will face Cal and Stanford in the BayArea, St. John's and Rutgers in New Jersey and South Carolina andSaint Mary's at UCLA. And, of course, there is their annual clashwith the Bruins, this season on Sept. 23 in Westwood. The Titanshave won four of the last five meetings but all of the wins havecome at home.

The Big West Confer-ence enters the 2001-02 aca-demic year for its 33rd year ofoperation but its first since 1991to feature men's soccer.

Over the past three decades, theconference has striven for athleticand academic success and this yearshould be no different as the Big West welcomestwo new members in Cal State Northridge and UCRiverside. A total of 10 teams will compete in 17sports this year with six -- Fullerton, UC Irvine, CalState Northridge, UC Riverside, Cal Poly and UCSanta Barbara -- vying for the men's soccer crownwith a home-and-away round-robin schedule.

The longest-running conference member isLong Beach State, which was one of the originalmembers of the league when it was formed back in1969. UC Santa Barbara, another original member,is tied for the second-longest tenure, with 30 yearsvested into the conference (The Gauchos left the con-ference for two seasons in the mid-70s). Pacific hasalso been a member for 30 years, joining in 1971.Three other members joined in the mid-to-late1970sincluding Cal State Fullerton (1974), UC Irvine(1977) and Utah State (1978). The next pair of cur-rent members joined in the mid-90s as Cal Poly andIdaho came into the league for the 1996-97 season.

The Big West Conference was formed as thePacific Coast Athletic Association on July 1, 1969.However, the unofficial history of the conferencepre-dates that point of time, extending back to 1967.

Cal State Los Angeles, Fresno State, LongBeach State and San Diego State were members ofthe California Collegiate Athletic Association, longrecognized as the nation's premier college circuit.

BIG WEST CONFERENCE

That conference was classified college division, and thereinlay a major source of dissatisfaction. Since 1963, the four institu-

tions had captured 16 national titles. The number swelled to 21 if themythical football championships were included.

With no more territory to conquer at the college division, astep up to university ranks had to be considered. Therefore, offi-cials of the seven colleges and universities assembled as a body in

May of 1969, tied up loose ends and less than two months later thePCAA was born. The name was changed to the Big West for the Fall of 1988.

HISTORY OF TITAN SOCCER

While the Cal State Fullerton men'ssoccer program reached unprecedentedheights in the 1990s, success was not lack-ing in the formative years. Coaches andplayers in the 1970s and 1980s laid thegroundwork for the national success theTitans now enjoy. Unfortunately, most ofthe pre-Div. I records are lost and there areonly snippets of the program's accom-plishments in the early seasons.

The Titans' trip to the Final Four atDavidson in 1993 for a third-place na-tional finish was not the closest they havecome to a national championship. In 1973,CSF went 15-3 and advanced to the Div. IItitle game in Springfield, Massachusetts,

losing to Missouri-St. Louis, 3-0. CoachDennis Checkett had served as assistant toCoach Paul Fardy from 1970 through 1972and he led the program into Div. I status inthe 1975 and 1976 seasons.

The Titans made annual trips to the NCAAplayoffs in the early 1970s, but probably thesingle most memorable game in early Titansoccer history occurred at the Santa AnaBowl on Oct. 30, 1974. A near full-housecrowd of more than 6,000 showed up to seethe playoff-bound Titans play the UCLABruins to a 1-1 tie. Another memorablemoment occurred in 1974 when the Titanstook advantage of a whistle blown in thestands. Host San Diego State's players re-

laxed and the Titans scored an easy anddecisive goal for a 3-2 win at the old AztecBowl.

Dave Morrison was one of the earliest Titans to advance to the pro-fessional ranks. A four-year standout as goalkeeper for the Titans from1975 through 1978, he was a member of the Los Angeles Aztecs of theNorth American Soccer League from 1978 through 1980, when the leagueceased operations.

"I didn't play much, but it was an honor just to be around the greatplayers and our coach, Rinus Michels," said Morrison, who currently man-ages an L.A. Fitness Center in Fountain Valley. "My most memorablemoment was a playoff game at Edmonton (Drillers) when he sent me in fora shootout. That's when you had one player line up 35 yards out and try toscore. I stopped him and we won."

Morrison Gave TitansPresence in Old NASL

Dave Morrison was featuredon the cover of the Nov./

Dec., 1976, issue oftitanSports, a magazine

produced by the CSFcommunications depart-

ment. "He could becomethe best goalkeeper ever tocome out of California, he'sthat good," said his coach,

Dennis Checkett. Morrisonwas born in Seattle but grew

up in Livermore andFountain Valley, California.

The Cal State Fullerton men's soccer program has been wellrepresented at the professional level in a variety of venues and theadvent of Major League Soccer (MLS) has provided anotheropportunity beyond college soccer for players. According toSoccer America, about 70 per cent of MLS players have collegiateexperience and only five schools (UCLA, Virginia, Fresno State,Indiana and Southern Connecticut) had more products than CalState Fullerton play in an MLS game in 1998.

Head Coach Al Mistri and his coaching staff are aware of thenew opportunities after college for players and they work to createan environment at Fullerton that will benefit everyone.

"The quality of our schedule is a clear indicator of theprofessional opportunities that players have here at Cal StateFullerton," said Mistri. "We take a serious approach for ourtraining and our overall level of the program guarantees exposurefor our players."

The Titans regularly compete against "A" League teams suchas the Orange County Waves (formerly Zodiac) in pre-seasonexhibitions. The Los Angeles Galaxy has worked out in TitanStadium and used Titans as "enemy" players in scrimmages.

The Titans have a slew of former players currently playingprofessionally including four in the MLS as of August in MikeAmmann of D.C. United, Brian Dunseth of the Miami Fusion,Antonio Martinez of the Dallas Burn and rookie Duncan Oughton,a first-round draft choice of the Columbus Crew, which at presstime had the best record in the MLS.

Ammann (Kansas City) and midfielder Brad Wilson (LosAngeles) both played in the MLS' inaugural season. Ammann

returned home after spending a number of seasons with Charlton,a member of England's First Division. He played in 2000 for NewYork/New Jersey and was the leading vote getter for the All-StarGame. Wilson also spent some time in Germany with F.C.Saarbrucken.

The Waves, the "farm team" for the Galaxy, played their homegames at Santa Ana Stadium and featured as many as five Titansin the lineup at one time including current Titan assistant coachEddie Soto, who also established himself as a star on the pro beachsoccer circuit, and Peter Lak, who also has been on the Galaxy.Others have included Colby Jackson, Paul McDonnell, RickyRodriguez, Art Temblador, Sheldon Thomas and Ken Hesse.

Indoor soccer also has some Titan connections. McDonnell,Hesse and Rodriguez played in 1996 for the Anaheim Splash of theContinental Indoor Soccer League at the Arrowhead Pond ofAnaheim.

Perhaps the best-known Titan was Mike Fox, whose career atCSF ran from 1979 through 1982. He debuted professionally forthe New York Cosmos, joining former Titan goalkeeper DaveMorrison in the North American Soccer League. Fox played in the
