The term “student-athlete” signifies something extraordinary on the campus of Bucknell University.

Being a Bison means that you have the rare blend of physical skills along with the drive and passion needed to succeed at the highest level of collegiate athletics.

Being a Bison also means that you are a scholar first and foremost. You be-lieve that values associated with Division I athletics, such as time management, leadership, teamwork and grace under pressure, are but a part of a well-rounded college experience.

At Bucknell, our students, faculty and staff pride themselves as national leaders in upholding the scholar-athlete ideal that balances a challenging academic program with the demands of successful Division I athletics.

Being a Bison means that you have pledged to be a student-athlete in the purest sense. In doing so, you will be rewarded for a lifetime.

“... the pursuit of athletics in college need not interfere with a fellow’s studies, and if you give a boy a well-developed body his brain will get the benefit of it.”

— Christy Mathewson, in his book Won in the Ninth, written in 1910

Bucknell Athletics is first and foremost a student-centered organization, one that strives to be a national leader when it comes to operating by a true scholar-athlete model. At Bucknell, student-athletes’ academic programs are their first priority, and providing a competitive Division I athletics program only advances the mission, values and residential learning goals of the university. To that end, the Department of Athletics and Recreation proactively seeks ways to assist student-athletes in their daily academic pursuits. Below are just some of the student-athlete support programs currently in place.

BuCKNELL BiSoN LEADERSHiP ACADEMY: In 2011-12, the Department of Athletics launched the Bucknell Bison Leadership Academy. This program is designed to help student-athletes learn how to be effective leaders on and off the playing fields. The Leadership Academy features programming and instruction that bridge theory, development and real experiences in an interactive learning environment. Through this endeavor, team leaders can enhance their impact on their teammates’ and their program’s performance immediately and for years to come.

FACuLTY ATHLETiCS REPRESENTATiVE: The faculty athletics representative (FAR) is a member of the faculty or administrative staff who is designated to represent Buck-nell in its relationships with the NCAA and the Patriot League. Bucknell’s FAR is Mitch Chernin, Professor of Biology. The FAR can enhance the student-athlete experience by promoting a balance between academics, athletics and the social lives of student-athletes, which affords them opportunities to enjoy a full range of collegiate experiences.

SiDELiNE CoACH PRoGRAM: This program is a truly unique initiative in Division I college athletics, and it involves the invitation of a member of the faculty, administration, staff or community by one of Bucknell’s 27 varsity teams. The participant has the opportunity to discuss the overall program with the respective coaching staff, including practice preparation and strategy for the upcoming contest. The sideline coach attends a practice session and an actual intercollegiate competition, where he/she is intro-duced to the team and gains rarely seen insight into the relationships that exist between player-coach and player-player. The purpose of the Sideline Coaches Program is to foster a better understanding by the faculty and administration of the roles played by coaches and athletes in the university’s competitive intercollegiate athletic arena.

ACADEMiC ENHANCEMENT CENTER: In the Fall of 2005, the Department of Athletics opened a study/computer lab for student-athletes on the concourse level of Sojka Pavilion. The center is outfitted with computers, a laser printer, four television monitors and a projection unit with computer, VCR and DVD player. Additionally, the study lab can be used as a meeting place for group projects, tutorial area or just a secluded and quiet study space before or after practice. In addition, the Department of Athletics owns a number of laptop computers that may be signed out by student-athletes for use on away trips.

STuDENT-ATHLETE ADViSoRY CoMMiTTEE (SAAC): Representatives from each varsity team comprise the SAAC, which is designed to enhance the total student-athlete experience by promoting opportunity, protecting student-athlete welfare, and fostering a positive student-athlete image. The Committee is an invaluable resource for pro-moting communication between athletics administration and student-athletes; promoting communication between athletics and campus-wide administration; providing feedback and insight, as well as soliciting responses into department issues and proposed NCAA legislation; building a sense of community within the athletics program involving all athletics teams; organizing community service projects and efforts; creating a vehicle for student-athlete representation on campus-wide committees; serving as a collective voice of campus student-athletes; and disseminating information to the student-athlete body. Among the programs the Bucknell SAAC has undertaken in recent years are regular volunteer trips to the Lewisburg Food Bank, and involvement with the “Orange and Blue goes Green” sustainability program.

BiSoN GooD SPoRTS: Now in its seventh year, Bison Good Sports is a sportsmanship awareness program designed to promote appropriate fan conduct at all Bison sporting events. Bucknell teams have some of the best fan support in the Patriot League, and we encourage all fans to enthusiastically cheer on the Orange & Blue in a positive manner.

Bucknell Athletics Facilities

Emmitt Field at Holmes Stadium: The home of Bison soccer.

The Bucknell University Department of Ath-letics and Recreation prides itself on setting the standard of excellence when it comes to success both on the playing fields and in the classroom. With 18 Patriot League Presidents’ Cups in 23 years, national leadership in graduation rates, 124 Aca-demic All-Americans in 43 years and 131 Patriot League Scholar-Athletes in 23 years, Bucknell is clearly at the head of the class in terms of uphold-ing the scholar-athlete model.

The addition of the Kenneth G. Langone Athletics and Recreation Center, one of the finest collegiate athletics and recreation venues of its kind, ensures the continuation of that success.

The facility, which celebrated its 10th birthday in 2012-13, has enhanced each of Bucknell’s 27 varsity programs and has greatly expanded the scope of its growing intramural and recreational sports offerings. A visually appeal-ing structure located along Moore Avenue on the “downhill” side of campus, the Langone Athletics and Recreation Center was designed to reach out to all members of the campus community, including the student body, varsity student-athletes, faculty, staff and alumni.

Three primary venues lie within the facility: the Arthur D. Kinney Jr. Na-tatorium, the 4,000-seat Gary A. Sojka Pavilion and the Krebs Family Fitness Center. Other features include a new location for the Bucknell Athletics Hall of Fame, a display of Bucknell’s Congressional Medal of Honor recipients, a brand new display highlighting Bucknell’s all-time Academic All-Americans, a sports medicine and athletic training suite, classrooms, modern offices for coaches and staff and increased locker room space for varsity and recreational athletes.

The facility is named in honor of Ken Langone, a 1957 Bucknell gradu-ate who, along with his wife Elaine, pledged $11 million toward the center’s construction. Langone was a member of the university Board of Trustees from 1980 to 1996.

One of the special qualities of the Langone Athletics and Recreation Center is the manner in which it supplements the pre-existing facilities. The construction surrounds Gerhard Fieldhouse and historic Davis Gymnasium, which has been restored as a competition venue for the Bison wrestling and volleyball teams, as well as intramural, recreation and other varsity practice activities.

As Bucknell continues to strive toward its mission of setting the standard of excellence in college athletics, the Langone Athletics and Recreation Center becomes the centerpiece in an already impressive cache of athletics facilities that includes the 13,100-seat Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium and its new FieldTurf and 8-lane track surface; the scenic Bucknell Golf Club and brand new Bachman Golf Center; the newly refurbished Depew Field (baseball) and Becker Field (softball); and Emmitt Field and Graham Field at Holmes Stadium, the new portion of the West Fields project that includes covered grandstand seats, ticket and concession areas, team rooms, a training room and a press box area for soccer, field hockey and women’s lacrosse.

After leading the 2009 Bison to perhaps the greatest year in program history, Brendan Nash guided the team to a Patriot League championship repeat — and a third conference title in five years — in 2010. One of the lon-gest-tenured and most successful coaches in program history, Nash returns for his 15th season as head coach and 18th season as a member of the staff, and he is looking to get the Bison back to that championship level in 2013.

Nash was appointed the program’s 13th head coach in 1999 after serving as the assistant coach for three seasons. Nash, who owns the highest win-ning percentage (.540) in program history and is second on the wins list with 123, has been successful throughout his tenure at Bucknell. The squad has finished at least .500 in the competitive Patriot League in seven of the last 10 seasons under his direction, and in three of the last seven years the team has captured Patriot League championships, with NCAA Tournament first-round wins following two of those titles.

In 2006, the Bison won their first Patriot League Tournament title and ad-vanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament thanks to an overtime goal that gave it a 1-0 first-round victory at George Mason.

In 2009, Bucknell set program records for wins (17) and shutouts (12) in a season, captured the Patriot League regular-season title, defeated Lafay-ette and American to win the PL Tournament on its home field, and blanked Princeton 1-0 in the NCAA Tournament. As an encore, the 2010 Bison won the Patriot League crown as the No. 4 seed, knocking off host Colgate and American in the tournament. A 1-0 overtime loss to homestanding Penn ended the team’s run of NCAA first-round success.

Bucknell’s success under Nash has not been limited to the championship seasons. In 2008, Bucknell played No. 10 Ohio State to a 1-1 tie and then defeated Penn State 2-0 to claim the team title at the Nittany Lion Classic in September. It was Bucknell’s first win over Penn State since 1975. The Bison repeated the feat with a come-from-behind 2-1 win over No. 15 Penn State last season in State College.

In 2002, Nash led the Bison to a then-school-record 13 wins. The next year they won 11 for a two-year win total of 24, which was a school record until the 2008-09 teams combined for 25.

On its way to the 11 wins in 2003, Bucknell went undefeated in Patriot League play to claim its second Patriot League regular-season title and first since 1990. Highlighting the campaign was a 1-0 win over second-ranked Maryland, the highest-ranked team Bucknell has defeated in its history. As a result of the successful season, Nash was named Patriot League Coach of the Year for the second time and NSCAA Mid-Atlantic Coach of Year for the first time. He would earn those honors again in 2009.

During the record-breaking 2002 campaign, Bucknell posted a 13-5-1 re-cord. The team also showed off its defensive skills, tying the previous Bison standard for shutouts in a year with 10. The team posted its second win over a nationally ranked program under Nash’s tutelage, defeating No. 18 Pitts-burgh on a penalty kick.

In his first year at the helm of the Orange and Blue, Nash coached his team to the first winning season in six years, posting a 9-7-1 mark in 1999. He followed that impressive debut with a 9-10-2 season in 2000, taking his team to the Patriot League playoffs for the first time in seven years. As a result, Nash was tabbed the Patriot League Coach of the Year.

Nash helped 2010 graduate Conor O’Brien become Bucknell’s first All-

American in 33 years as well as a finalist for the Hermann Trophy, given to the national player of the year. Two of his players, O’Brien and Michael Look-ingland ‘05, have gone on to play professional soccer after graduating from Bucknell, with O’Brien currently playing for a superleague team in Denmark.

Along with on-field success, Nash’s teams have excelled in the classroom. He has coached five Academic All-Americans: 2001 graduate Ryan Weber, 2005 graduate Jonathan Hemmert, who earned the prestigious award twice, Chris Hennings in 2008 and Patrick Selwood in 2009. Additionally, the Bison have earned the NSCAA Team Academic Award every year since 1997.

A 1994 graduate of Trenton State College (now College of New Jersey) with a degree in communications, Nash was hired by Bucknell after acting as assistant coach at his alma mater for three seasons.

While playing for the Lions, Nash appeared in the NCAA Division III na-tional championship in 1991. His senior year concluded by being named the recipient of the John Heslin Award (leadership, commitment and sportsman-ship). During his last two seasons as an assistant for the Trenton State squad, Nash helped post a 34-6-5 record for the school, including a 19-2-2 mark in 1994. The Blue and Gold finished third in the nation in Division III that season. Prior to attending TSC, Nash was a member of the men’s soccer team at Long-wood College. As a sophomore, he was named First Team All-Conference as well as the Defensive Player of the Year in the conference.

Nash is currently the Director of the Bison Soccer Camps and has also worked numerous other summer camps around the country. He has been in-strumental in organizing several youth clinics throughout the Susquehanna Valley. He holds the USSF “B” license and the National Soccer Coaches As-sociation of America Advanced National Diploma. In addition, Nash is the Patriot League representative on the Division I Men’s Soccer College Coaches Committee, and is a member the NSCAA All-America Committee.

Nash hails from Neptune, N.J., and attended high school at Christian Brothers Academy, which is renowned for its perennial soccer talent. In ad-dition to his bachelor’s degree, he received his master’s degree from the Col-lege of New Jersey for Sports Administration in 1997.

Both of Nash’s brothers, Jamie and Brian, coach soccer in New Jersey. Ja-mie is the head coach at Boonton High School, while Brian coaches the boys’ junior varsity soccer team at Marlboro High School.

Patrick Long, a former team captain and all-region selection at Lock Haven, is in his fourth season as an assistant coach with the Bucknell men’s soccer program. Long, who previously had been an assistant coach at East Strouds-burg, helped the Bison win a Patriot League championship in his first season.

A native of Lock Haven, Pa., Long gradu-ated from his hometown school with a bach-elor of science degree in secondary education and social studies, with a minor in coaching. As a student-athlete on the men’s soccer team

from 2003-06, he was a two-time First Team All-PSAC selection and a two-time All-Northeast Region selection, making first team in 2005 and second team in 2006. A two-year team captain, Long won the team’s Player of the Year Award as a junior and Coaches’ Award as a senior, was a three-time PSAC Scholar-Athlete, and was a Third Team Academic All-American during his se-nior campaign.

During the 2005 spring semester, he studied at Hope University in Liver-pool, England. Long also played on the Lock Haven men’s basketball team in 2006-07.

While completing his coursework at Lock Haven, Long served as a stu-dent assistant coach with the Eagles in 2007-08. He then moved on to East Stroudsburg as a graduate assistant coach as he completed his master’s de-gree in sports management with a 4.0 grade-point average in August 2009. Last fall, he remained at ESU as an assistant coach, helping the Warriors to an 11-win season.

Long has been very active in the summer camp and club soccer scene as a coach, camp counselor and tournament director. Prior to his arrival at Buck-nell, he was an assistant coach with the Central Pennsylvania ODP in 2008, and in 2009 was the player development system director for the Pocono Area Shooting Stars F.C. In the last year he has helped organize the Bison Soccer Camp and the North Union United Summer Camp.

Former Bucknell assistant coach and long-time Lewisburg boys soccer coach Pete El-lis returned to the Bison sidelines in 2007 as a volunteer assistant coach and is now in his seventh year in that role.

After prowling the Bucknell sidelines as an assistant from 1984-87, Ellis moved just down the road to Lewisburg Area High School, where he became a health and physical edu-cation teacher, a post he still holds, and boys soccer coach. In his 19 years at the helm of the Green Dragons, Ellis compiled a sparkling 261-

125-37 record, including 23-3-0 in his final season in 2006. A two-time Pennsylvania Soccer Coaches Association State Coach of the

Year and a four-time Susquehanna Valley Conference Coach of the Year, El-lis led Lewisburg to unprecedented success over his final decade. The team won three Susquehanna Valley Conference titles, was a District IV finalist seven times, advanced to the PIAA playoffs eight times and won the 2000 Class A state championship during that span.

A resident of Lewisburg, Ellis relinquished his coaching duties with Lew-isburg to spend more time with his family and afford him the opportunity to watch his daughter, Roz, play field hockey at Iowa.

The strength and conditioning pro-gram at Bucknell received a major boost in 2003 with the completion of the sparkling 15,000-square-foot Krebs Family Fitness Cen-ter and Berger Family Weight Room, as well as the hiring of Jerry Shreck as the program’s first full-time strength & conditioning coordinator.

A 1996 graduate of East Stroudsburg with a degree in movement studies and exercise science, Shreck is charged with implementing detailed daily strength and conditioning rou-tines for each of Bucknell’s athletic programs.

The general philosophy of the Bison strength program is year-round pe-riodization with a high-intensity base, supplemented with functional and sport-specific training. Training programs for most teams employ explosion techniques with power bands and plyometrics.

The ultimate goal of the strength and conditioning program is the pre-vention of injuries and training athletes to their peak physical condition.

A native of nearby Montgomery, Pa., Shreck had served as the athletic trainer for the Bucknell men’s basketball team for three seasons prior to his appointment as strength and conditioning coordinator. He is a member of the National Strength and Conditioning Association and the National Coun-cil of Strength and Fitness.

york ‘03 • Second Season

Matt Haney is in his second season with the Bucknell men’s soccer staff, where he works with the Bison goalkeepers. From 2000-03 and 2009-11, Haney was the lead assistant coach and goalkeeper coach at York College. He also served as interim head coach there in 2001.

Haney was a collegiate goalkeeper himself at both Wilkes and Bloomsburg. At Wilkes he helped his team set school records for wins (16) and shutouts (13) in 1991, and a year later the Colonels won the MAC Northeast Division. Haney was Team MVP at Bloomsburg in 1994.

During his first coaching stint at York, Haney completed his bachelor of science degree in elementary education, and he earned a master’s degree at Saint Francis University in 2009. Haney served as an assistant coach with the Red Flash while working on his gradu-ate studies. From 2003-05, Haney was head boys’ soccer coach at nearby Millville Area High School. He has also coached the Elite and Premier U17 teams with the FC York Soccer Club, and among his extensive camp experi-ence he has coached at the Bucknell Bison Soccer Camp since 2008.

skills. Thorsheim tallied four assists last season and earned Second Team All-Patriot League honors.

“We are looking for Chris to expand his offensive game,” said Nash. “Our offense goes through him. He really reads the game well and has a very good of-fensive mind. He had a good rookie year and it is a matter of time before the goals start coming.”

Elsewhere in the midfield, junior Jonathan Grad is another of the players now back healthy after bat-tling injuries last season. Grad did score a goal in 17 appearances last season, but after offseason surgery has looked very good in the preseason. Junior John Miller moves to a new role at right midfield after playing mostly in the defensive third previously. An-other junior, Mark Leibensperger, has a tireless work rate and is competing for time after scoring a goal in seven games last year.

Sophomore Patrick Figgie started four games and played in 16 as a freshman in 2012. He scored two goals, including the game-winner in a 1-0 vic-tory at NJIT, and he has the versatility to play on ei-ther side of the field.

Freshmen Sebastiaan Blickman, Andrew Leis-chner, Austin Lenart and Crispin Muessle are all promising midfielders battling for playing time. In preseason training, Leischner stood out as a small, quick, attack-minded center midfielder.

The Patriot League will have a new look in 2013 with the addition of Boston University and Loyola Maryland. With 10 teams now in the league, the Pa-triot League Tournament has expanded from four teams to six, with the top two seeds receiving byes for the quarterfinal round.

Bucknell opens the 2013 campaign with four straight home games, and the Patriot League open-er is also at home against Army on Sept. 28. The Bi-son play five of their nine conference games at Em-mitt Field.

“There is some uncharted territory for Loyola, Boston University and the whole league,” said Nash. “We don’t know them very well, but they also don’t know us. We have a good schedule where we will get to play a lot of games at home in front of our great crowds. We lost some tough games at home last year, and one of our primary goals for this year is to get back to protecting our home field.”

While Alli will wear the captain’s armband, Butzke, Kimbrough and Meyer are all poised to play prime leadership roles as well.

“Our senior class is excited for the opportunity to lead us,” said Nash. “There were some strong person-alities among last year’s six seniors. Now these four have the chance to lead the team and write their own legacy.”

SeaSon outlook

Brendan Nash is entering his 15th season as head coach of the Bucknell men’s soccer program, and for the first time in quite a few years, he enters a season not entirely sure what his team will look like stylisti-cally. He knows it will be a younger team, with six key players lost to graduation and only four seniors on the 2013 roster, and Nash figures it might take time for this group to establish its identity.

“We don’t quite know who we are yet,” said Nash, who is Bucknell’s second-longest-tenured soccer coach behind only his predecessor Craig Reynolds. “By the time Patriot League play gets here on Sept. 28 we have to have it figured out. We have talent and we are much deeper, which means that we will be able to adapt better to game situations and injuries, but it also means that it is going to take us some time to see which combinations work best.”

The Bison appear to be especially strong up the middle of the field, where sophomore striker Jesse Klug, sophomore center midfielder Chris Thorsheim, senior center back Mayowa Alli and sophomore goalkeeper Mike Lansing are all among the Patriot League’s best at their respective positions.

Alli is the team captain, and his athleticism not only makes him a standout defender, but he is also extremely dangerous on restarts in the offensive third. Alli was the Patriot League Rookie of the Year in 2010, and as a sophomore he was a First Team All-Patriot League and Second Team All-Region selection. He was the team’s leading scorer with seven goals as a defender in 2011, and he was off to another strong start last year until his season was disrupted by a shoulder injury in the middle of con-ference play.

“The injury bug really hit our team last year, and one of the biggest ones was Mayowa,” said Nash, whose squad finished 7-8-5 overall and qualified for the Patriot League Tournament with a fourth-place finish. “This is Mayowa’s team. He is back to 100 per-cent health-wise and he has really run with the lead-ership aspect.”

Three other veterans, seniors Joe Meyer and Josh Butzke along with junior Brian Ward, also figure to have prominent roles on defense. That trio com-bined to miss only one start all of last season. Meyer, a Capital One Academic All-America selection last year, spent much of his career at outside midfield, but he moved to right back last season, and Nash feels that is his best position. Ward also made a move

last season from holding center mid to left back, and this year he could play the other center back spot next to Alli. When Ward moved out of the defensive midfield position, Butzke capably slid in there.

Sophomore Connor Willings started six games in the back four as a freshman last season, and he is a strong candidate to reclaim one of those starting spots. Junior Rafael Enriquez-Hesles and sophomore Mark Kramarchuk are also battling for minutes in the back line.

Nash is very high on a pair of first-year defend-ers in Adam Bradshaw and Peter Krebs. Bradshaw brings quite a resume to Bucknell, as the Ontario native played for the Toronto FC Academy Team and the Canadian U18 National Team. Krebs could be a physical force at 6’4”, and Nash feels that once he ad-justs to the speed of the Division I game Krebs can become a contributor.

Behind that strong defensive line are a pair of talented sophomore goalkeepers in Lansing and Clarke Fox. Lansing had a terrific rookie season in 2012, posting a league-best 0.86 goals-against aver-age to go with five shutouts. His .843 save percent-age ranked ninth nationally and second among all Division I freshmen. Fox made two starts last season, posting a shutout win and a draw, and Nash is com-forted knowing that he has the luxury of two top-class keepers in the program.

“If Mike Lansing plays up to his ability, he can be talked about in the same company with the best goalkeepers that have ever played at Bucknell,” praised Nash. “He is freakishly athletic and is the fast-est player on the team. We’ll see how he matures as a keeper as his career progresses, but he has all of the tools. And with Clarke, we really look at our goalie situation as having a 1A and a 1B. We have the ut-most confidence in Clarke. He has gotten a lot better, and he will definitely get games this year.”

Popular senior Orman Kimbrough, one of the team’s “glue guys,” will serve as the No. 3 goalkeeper.

Offensively, Nash is looking for a breakout season from Klug, who started every game at forward as a freshman last year. Klug finished with three goals and four assists, but he seemed inches away from another bucketful of goals. He certainly had himself well-positioned, as his 66 shot attempts were far and away the most in the league.

“For us to be successful, we are going to need Jes-se to score goals,” said Nash. “Last year he played up front with some very experienced seniors in Brendan Burgdorf and Josh Plump, and Jesse really flourished as the go-to guy in the spring. He has a special ability to score goals.”

Juniors Pat Plourde and Conor Keeley, along with freshman Justin Galiani, provide Nash with depth up front to spell Klug. Plourde has good size, strikes the ball well and often puts himself in dangerous posi-tions. He can either give Klug a blow, or if the Bison need to press for a goal, he also plays well alongside Klug in a two-forward lineup.

Keeley logged two goals and an assist in 16 min-utes of reserve action against Adelphi last season, and Nash sees him as a good situational player who can come in and make smart runs in good spots. Galiani has the potential to be a handful for oppos-ing defenses at 6’4”. He can get to the end of any ball in the air, and he brings a good change of pace when Klug comes off.

Thorsheim reminds Nash quite a bit of former star center midfielder Conor O’Brien, who now plays for one of the top pro teams in Denmark. It is no co-incidence that Thorsheim was given O’Brien’s old No. 8. Neither player was overly physically imposing, but both have off-the-charts field vision and terrific ball

Craig Reynolds: Craig Reynolds arrived in Lewisburg in 1967 and would go on to spend 38 years as a coach and administrator at Bucknell. He coached the Bison men’s soccer, tennis and track and field teams during that time. His 238-212-36 soccer record makes him the winningest coach in program history. Michael Lookingland ’05Michael Lookingland became the first Buck-

nell men’s soccer player, and just the sixth from the Patriot League, to be drafted by a Major League Soccer team when he was selected by Real Salt Lake with the 13th overall pick in the 2005 MLS Supplemental Draft.

The 2005 Bucknell graduate, who made his

MLS debut later that summer, has played professional indoor soccer with the Bal-timore Blast since 2008 and has also seen action with the USL Second Divi-sion Harrisburg City Islanders and with Crystal Palace USA. He has won two championships with the Blast and one with the City Island-ers. He was the 2012 MISL Defender of the Year and a First Team All-MISL selection.

The Bison men’s soccer team has captured three of the last seven Patriot League championships, winning titles in 2006, 2009 and 2010. Buck-nell became only the fourth team in Patriot League history to repeat as champion, and the Bison are just the second PL team to win three titles in a five-year span.

In the 2006 Patriot League Tournament, fourth-seeded Bucknell won twice in penalty kicks. Buoyed by red-hot goalkeeper Joey Kuterbach, the Bison defeated 14th-ranked Lehigh in the semifinals and Lafayette in the championship. Bucknell was the No. 1 seed in 2009, and playing at Em-mitt Field knocked off Lafayette (on Conor O’Brien’s overtime goal) and American. In 2010 the Bison again won as the No. 4 seed, this time picking off Colgate and American without conceding a goal.

Bucknell advanced to the NCAA Tournament after each of those Patriot League championships, and in 2006 and 2009 the Bison won first-round games, beating George Mason and Princeton, respectively. The George Mason win was Bucknell’s first NCAA victory since 1974.

Fox Soccer Channel has visited the Bucknell campus for live national broadcasts twice in recent years. The 2007 game between Buck-nell and Lehigh and the 2009 contest between the Bison and Lafayette were televised on Fox Soccer Channel. There were the first national television broadcasts to originate from Buck-nell’s Emmitt Field at Holmes Stadium. The Bison won both games, topping Lehigh 3-1 in 2007 and Lafayette 1-0 in 2009.
