The term “student-athlete” signifies something extraordinary on the campus of Bucknell University.

Being a Bison means that you have the rare blend of physical skills along with the drive and passion needed to succeed at the highest level of collegiate athletics.

Being a Bison also means that you are a scholar first and foremost. You be-lieve that values associated with Division I athletics, such as time management, leadership, teamwork and grace under pressure, are but a part of a well-rounded college experience.

At Bucknell, our students, faculty and staff pride themselves as national leaders in upholding the scholar-athlete ideal that balances a challenging academic program with the demands of successful Division I athletics.

Being a Bison means that you have pledged to be a student-athlete in the purest sense. In doing so, you will be rewarded for a lifetime.

“... the pursuit of athletics in college need not interfere with a fellow’s studies, and if you give a boy a well-developed body his brain will get the benefit of it.”

— Christy Mathewson, in his book Won in the Ninth, written in 1910

Mechanical Engineering major Joe Meyer was a Capital

One Academic All-American in 2012 and 2013. He is

one of 125 Bucknell Academic All-Americans, the fifth-

highest total among all Division I schools.

Bucknell takes great pride in its commitment to excellence on and off the playing fields. From Presidents’ Cups to Academic All-Americans to gradua-tion rates that are ranked annually in the national top-10, Bucknell is clearly at the head of the class when it comes to upholding the scholar-athlete ideal.

• According to federal data released by the NCAA each fall, Bucknell’s student-athlete graduation rate annually ranks in the top 10 among all Division i institutions. Bucknell has led the nation in graduation rates three times, including in the most recent survey in the fall of 2013.

• Bucknell has claimed a league-high 136 Patriot League Scholar-Ath-letes of the Year since the league’s inception as an all-sports conference in 1990-91.

• A total of 254 Bison appeared on the Patriot League Academic Hon-or Roll in 2013-14 after recording a GPA of 3.2 or better during their sport’s competition season. Among all Bu student-athletes, 258 made the Dean’s List with GPAs of 3.5 or better during 2013-14.

• in addition to the 125 Capital one Academic All-Americans produced since 1970, Bucknell has also claimed 341 Academic All-District honor-ees over the same span, including three in 2012-13.

• Bucknell has earned 98 Patriot League championships in 24 years in the league. in addition, Bucknell has had 125 conference players of the year, 104 PL coaches of the year and a whopping 581 individual league champions from sports such as cross country, track & field, swimming & diving, tennis and golf.

• 25 of Bucknell’s 27 varsity squads posted team GPAs of 3.0 or better in the spring of 2014.

• Bucknell has captured the Patriot League Presidents’ Cup, signifying the league’s all-sports champion, 18 times in the 24-year history of the affiliation, including 14 of the last 17 years.

• Bucknell ranks FiFTH in the nation (to Nebraska, Notre Dame, Penn State and Stanford) in total number of Capital one Academic All-Amer-ica selections with 125.

• A major element in ensuring Bucknell’s commitment to athletics excel-lence is the Kenneth G. Langone Athletics & Recreation Center, which opened fully in 2003. one of the finest collegiate athletics facilities of its kind, the center includes the 4,000-seat Sojka Pavilion, the olym-pic class Kinney Natatorium, the Krebs Family Fitness Center and the Berger Family Weight Room. A Hall of Fame area, a display of Bucknell’s Medal of Honor recipients, an Academic All-America wall, a sports med-icine suite, modern offices for coaches and staff, and locker room and classroom space are also included in the facility’s layout.

Bucknell Athletics is first and foremost a student-centered organization, one that strives to be a national leader when it comes to operating by a true scholar-athlete model. At Bucknell, student-athletes’ academic programs are their first priority, and providing a competitive Division I athletics program only advances the mission, values and residential learning goals of the university. To that end, the Department of Athletics and Recreation proactively seeks ways to assist student-athletes in their daily academic pursuits. Below are just some of the student-athlete support programs currently in place.

BuCKNELL BiSoN LEADERSHiP ACADEMY: In 2011-12, the Department of Athletics launched the Bucknell Bison Leadership Academy. This program is designed to help student-athletes learn how to be effective leaders on and off the playing fields. The Leadership Academy features programming and instruction that bridge theory, development and real experiences in an interactive learning environment. Through this endeavor, team leaders can enhance their impact on their teammates’ and their program’s performance immediately and for years to come.

FACuLTY ATHLETiCS REPRESENTATiVE: The faculty athletics representative (FAR) is a member of the faculty or administrative staff who is designated to represent Buck-nell in its relationships with the NCAA and the Patriot League. Bucknell’s FAR is Mitch Chernin, Professor of Biology. The FAR can enhance the student-athlete experience by promoting a balance between academics, athletics and the social lives of student-athletes, which affords them opportunities to enjoy a full range of collegiate experiences.

SiDELiNE CoACH PRoGRAM: This program is a truly unique initiative in Division I college athletics, and it involves the invitation of a member of the faculty, administration, staff or community by one of Bucknell’s 27 varsity teams. The participant has the opportunity to discuss the overall program with the respective coaching staff, including practice preparation and strategy for the upcoming contest. The sideline coach attends a practice session and an actual intercollegiate competition, where he/she is intro-duced to the team and gains rarely seen insight into the relationships that exist between player-coach and player-player. The purpose of the Sideline Coaches Program is to foster a better understanding by the faculty and administration of the roles played by coaches and athletes in the university’s competitive intercollegiate athletic arena.

ACADEMiC ENHANCEMENT CENTER: In the Fall of 2005, the Department of Athletics opened a study/computer lab for student-athletes on the concourse level of Sojka Pavilion. The center is outfitted with computers, a laser printer, four television monitors and a projection unit with computer, VCR and DVD player. Additionally, the study lab can be used as a meeting place for group projects, tutorial area or just a secluded and quiet study space before or after practice. In addition, the Department of Athletics owns a number of laptop computers that may be signed out by student-athletes for use on away trips.

STuDENT-ATHLETE ADViSoRY CoMMiTTEE (SAAC): Representatives from each varsity team comprise the SAAC, which is designed to enhance the total student-athlete experience by promoting opportunity, protecting student-athlete welfare, and fostering a positive student-athlete image. The Committee is an invaluable resource for pro-moting communication between athletics administration and student-athletes; promoting communication between athletics and campus-wide administration; providing feedback and insight, as well as soliciting responses into department issues and proposed NCAA legislation; building a sense of community within the athletics program involving all athletics teams; organizing community service projects and efforts; creating a vehicle for student-athlete representation on campus-wide committees; serving as a collective voice of campus student-athletes; and disseminating information to the student-athlete body. Among the programs the Bucknell SAAC has undertaken in recent years are regular volunteer trips to the Lewisburg Food Bank, and involvement with the “Orange and Blue goes Green” sustainability program.

BiSoN GooD SPoRTS: Now in its eighth year, Bison Good Sports is a sportsmanship awareness program designed to promote appropriate fan conduct at all Bison sporting events. Bucknell teams have some of the best fan support in the Patriot League, and we encourage all fans to enthusiastically cheer on the Orange & Blue in a positive manner.

This is Bucknell

Bucknell Athletics Facilities

Emmitt Field at Holmes Stadium: The home of Bison soccer.

The Bucknell University Department of Ath-letics and Recreation prides itself on setting the standard of excellence when it comes to success both on the playing fields and in the classroom. With 18 Patriot League Presidents’ Cups in 24 years, national leadership in graduation rates, 125 Aca-demic All-Americans in 44 years and 136 Patriot League Scholar-Athletes in 24 years, Bucknell is clearly at the head of the class in terms of uphold-ing the scholar-athlete model.

The addition of the Kenneth G. Langone Athletics and Recreation Center, one of the finest collegiate athletics and recreation venues of its kind, ensures the continuation of that success.

The facility, which celebrated its 10th birthday in 2012-13, has enhanced each of Bucknell’s 27 varsity programs and has greatly expanded the scope of its growing intramural and recreational sports offerings. A visually appeal-ing structure located along Moore Avenue on the “downhill” side of campus, the Langone Athletics and Recreation Center was designed to reach out to all members of the campus community, including the student body, varsity student-athletes, faculty, staff and alumni.

Three primary venues lie within the facility: the Arthur D. Kinney Jr. Na-tatorium, the 4,000-seat Gary A. Sojka Pavilion and the Krebs Family Fitness Center. Other features include a new location for the Bucknell Athletics Hall of Fame, a display of Bucknell’s Congressional Medal of Honor recipients, a brand new display highlighting Bucknell’s all-time Academic All-Americans, a sports medicine and athletic training suite, classrooms, modern offices for coaches and staff and increased locker room space for varsity and recreational athletes.

The facility is named in honor of Ken Langone, a 1957 Bucknell gradu-ate who, along with his wife Elaine, pledged $11 million toward the center’s construction. Langone was a member of the university Board of Trustees from 1980 to 1996.

One of the special qualities of the Langone Athletics and Recreation Center is the manner in which it supplements the pre-existing facilities. The construction surrounds Gerhard Fieldhouse and historic Davis Gymnasium, which has been restored as a competition venue for the Bison wrestling and volleyball teams, as well as intramural, recreation and other varsity practice activities.

As Bucknell continues to strive toward its mission of setting the standard of excellence in college athletics, the Langone Athletics and Recreation Center becomes the centerpiece in an already impressive cache of athletics facilities that includes the 13,100-seat Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium and its new FieldTurf and 8-lane track surface; the scenic Bucknell Golf Club and the new Bachman Golf Center; the newly refurbished Depew Field (baseball) and Becker Field (softball); and Emmitt Field and Graham Field at Holmes Stadium, the new portion of the West Fields project that includes covered grandstand seats, ticket and concession areas, team rooms, a training room and a press box area for soccer, field hockey and women’s lacrosse.

After leading the 2009 Bison to perhaps the greatest year in program history, Brendan Nash, guided the team to a Patriot League championship repeat — and a third conference title in five years — in 2010. Now Nash returns for his 16th season as head coach and 19th season as a member of the Bucknell men’s soccer program, and he is looking to get the Bison back to the top of the league standings in 2014.

Nash was appointed the program’s 13th head coach in 1999 after serving as the assistant coach for three seasons. Nash, who owns the highest winning per-centage (.549) in program history and is second on the wins list with 143, has been successful throughout his tenure at Bucknell. The squad has finished at least .500 in the competitive Patriot League in eight of the last 11 seasons under his direc-tion, and in three of the last eight years the team has captured Patriot League championships, with NCAA Tournament first-round wins following two of those titles.

In 2006, the Bison won their first Patriot League Tournament title and ad-vanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament thanks to an overtime goal that gave it a 1-0 first-round victory at George Mason.

In 2009, Bucknell set program records for wins (17) and shutouts (12) in a season, captured the Patriot League regular-season title, defeated Lafayette and American to win the PL Tournament on its home field, and blanked Princeton 1-0 in the NCAA Tournament. As an encore, the 2010 Bison won the Patriot League crown as the No. 4 seed, knocking off host Colgate and American in the tourna-ment. A 1-0 overtime loss to homestanding Penn ended the team’s run of NCAA first-round success.

Bucknell’s success under Nash has not been limited to the championship sea-sons. Last fall the Bison won 13 games — second-most in program history — went 8-1-1 on the road and defeated American in a home Patriot League Tournament quarterfinal tilt. In 2008, Bucknell played No. 10 Ohio State to a 1-1 tie and then defeated Penn State 2-0 to claim the team title at the Nittany Lion Classic in Sep-tember. It was Bucknell’s first win over Penn State since 1975. The Bison repeated the feat with a come-from-behind 2-1 win over No. 15 Penn State in 2010 in State College. In 2002, Nash led the Bison to a then-school-record 13 wins. The next year they won 11 for a two-year win total of 24, which was a school record until the 2008-09 teams combined for 25.

On its way to the 11 wins in 2003, Bucknell went undefeated in Patriot League play to claim its second Patriot League regular-season title and first since 1990. Highlighting the campaign was a 1-0 win over second-ranked Maryland, the high-est-ranked team Bucknell has defeated in its history. As a result of the successful season, Nash was named Patriot League Coach of the Year for the second time and NSCAA Mid-Atlantic Coach of Year for the first time. He would earn those honors again in 2009.

During the record-breaking 2002 campaign, Bucknell posted a 13-5-1 record. The team also showed off its defensive skills, tying the previous Bison standard for shutouts in a year with 10. The team posted its second win over a nationally ranked program under Nash’s tutelage, defeating No. 18 Pittsburgh on a penalty kick.

In his first year at the helm of the Orange and Blue, Nash coached his team to the first winning season in six years, posting a 9-7-1 mark in 1999. He followed that impressive debut with a 9-10-2 season in 2000, taking his team to the Patriot League playoffs for the first time in seven years. As a result, Nash was tabbed the Patriot League Coach of the Year.

Nash helped 2010 graduate Conor O’Brien become Bucknell’s first All-Ameri-can in 33 years as well as a finalist for the Hermann Trophy, given to the national player of the year. Three of his players, O’Brien, Mayowa Alli ‘14 and Michael Look-ingland `05, have gone on to play professional soccer after graduating from Buck-nell, with O’Brien last year playing for a UEFA Champions League-qualifying Su-

perleague team in Denmark before moving on to a top-flight team in Austria this year. Alli, who won the Christy Mathewson Award as the top senior athlete in the Class of 2014, is also playing in Denmark this season. Lookingland has carved out an all-star indoor career with the Baltimore Blast.

Along with on-field success, Nash’s teams have excelled in the classroom. He has coached seven Academic All-Americans: 2001 graduate Ryan Weber, 2005 graduate Jonathan Hemmert, who earned the prestigious award twice, Chris Hen-nings in 2008, Patrick Selwood in 2009 and two-time honoree Joe Meyer (2012, 2013). Additionally, the Bison have earned the NSCAA Team Academic Award ev-ery year since 1997.

A 1994 graduate of Trenton State College (now College of New Jersey) with a degree in communications, Nash was hired by Bucknell after acting as assistant coach at his alma mater for three seasons.

While playing for the Lions, Nash appeared in the NCAA Division III national championship in 1991. His senior year concluded by being named the recipient of the John Heslin Award (leadership, commitment and sportsmanship). During his last two seasons as an assistant for the Trenton State squad, Nash helped post a 34-6-5 record for the school, including a 19-2-2 mark in 1994. The Blue and Gold finished third in the nation in Division III that season. Prior to attending TSC, Nash was a member of the men’s soccer team at Longwood College. As a sophomore, he was named First Team All-Conference as well as the Defensive Player of the Year in the conference.

Nash is currently the Director of the Bison Soccer Camps and has also worked numerous other summer camps around the country. He has been instrumental in organizing several youth clinics throughout the Susquehanna Valley. He holds the USSF “B” license and the National Soccer Coaches Association of America Ad-vanced National Diploma. In addition, Nash is the Patriot League representative on the Division I Men’s Soccer College Coaches Committee, and is a member the NSCAA All-America Committee.

Nash hails from Neptune, N.J., and attended high school at Christian Broth-ers Academy, which is renowned for its perennial soccer talent. In addition to his bachelor’s degree, he received his master’s degree from the College of New Jersey for Sports Administration in 1997.

Both of Nash’s brothers, Jamie and Brian, coach soccer in New Jersey. Jamie is the head coach at Boonton High School, while Brian coaches the boys’ junior varsity soccer team at Marlboro High School.

east Stroudsburg ’96 • 13th SeasonPatrick Long, a former team captain and

all-region selection at Lock Haven, is in his fifth season as an assistant coach with the Bucknell men’s soccer program. Long, who previously had been an assistant coach at East Strouds-burg, helped the Bison win a Patriot League championship in his first season.

A native of Lock Haven, Pa., Long gradu-ated from his hometown school with a bach-elor of science degree in secondary education and social studies, with a minor in coaching. As a student-athlete on the men’s soccer team

from 2003-06, he was a two-time First Team All-PSAC selection and a two-time All-Northeast Region selection, making first team in 2005 and second team in 2006. A two-year team captain, Long won the team’s Player of the Year Award as a junior and Coaches’ Award as a senior, was a three-time PSAC Scholar-Athlete, and was a Third Team Academic All-American during his se-nior campaign.

During the 2005 spring semester, he studied at Hope University in Liver-pool, England. Long also played on the Lock Haven men’s basketball team in 2006-07.

While completing his coursework at Lock Haven, Long served as a stu-dent assistant coach with the Eagles in 2007-08. He then moved on to East Stroudsburg as a graduate assistant coach as he completed his master’s de-gree in sports management with a 4.0 grade-point average in August 2009. Last fall, he remained at ESU as an assistant coach, helping the Warriors to an 11-win season.

Long has been very active in the summer camp and club soccer scene as a coach, camp counselor and tournament director. Prior to his arrival at Buck-nell, he was an assistant coach with the Central Pennsylvania ODP in 2008, and in 2009 was the player development system director for the Pocono Area Shooting Stars F.C. He has recently helped organize the Bison Soccer Camp and the North Union United Summer Camp.

Former Bucknell assistant coach and long-time Lewisburg boys soccer coach Pete El-lis returned to the Bison sidelines in 2007 as a volunteer assistant coach and is now in his eighth year in that role.

After prowling the Bucknell sidelines as an assistant from 1984-87, Ellis moved just down the road to Lewisburg Area School District, where he became a health and physical edu-cation teacher, a post he still holds, and boys high school soccer coach. In his 19 years at the helm of the Green Dragons, Ellis compiled a

sparkling 261-125-37 record, including 23-3-0 in his final season in 2006. A two-time Pennsylvania Soccer Coaches Association State Coach of the

Year and a four-time Susquehanna Valley Conference Coach of the Year, El-lis led Lewisburg to unprecedented success over his final decade. The team won three Susquehanna Valley Conference titles, was a District IV finalist seven times, advanced to the PIAA playoffs eight times and won the 2000 Class A state championship during that span.

A resident of Lewisburg, Ellis relinquished his coaching duties with Lew-isburg to spend more time with his family and afford him the opportunity to watch his daughter, Roz, play field hockey at Iowa.

The strength and conditioning pro-gram at Bucknell received a major boost in 2003 with the completion of the sparkling 15,000-square-foot Krebs Family Fitness Cen-ter and Berger Family Weight Room, as well as the hiring of Jerry Shreck as the program’s first full-time strength & conditioning coordinator.

A 1996 graduate of East Stroudsburg with a degree in movement studies and exercise science, Shreck is charged with implementing detailed daily strength and conditioning rou-tines for each of Bucknell’s athletic programs.

The general philosophy of the Bison strength program is year-round pe-riodization with a high-intensity base, supplemented with functional and sport-specific training. Training programs for most teams employ explosion techniques with power bands and plyometrics.

The ultimate goal of the strength and conditioning program is the pre-vention of injuries and training athletes to their peak physical condition.

A native of nearby Montgomery, Pa., Shreck had served as the athletic trainer for the Bucknell men’s basketball team for three seasons prior to his appointment as strength and conditioning coordinator. He is a member of the National Strength and Conditioning Association and the National Coun-cil of Strength and Fitness.

have an All-America center back this year, but as a group we should be able to fill the void.”

Nash’s teams have traditionally relied on out-standing defense and goalkeeping, along with some opportunistic goal-scoring. The Bison kept 10 clean sheets a year ago, and in 2014 they re-turn perhaps the league’s best 1-2 goalie tandem in Lansing and fellow junior Clarke Fox. Both are tall, athletic keepers, and while Lansing is the starter, Nash would not hesitate to go to Fox on any given night.

Lansing produced a terrific sophomore cam-paign that saw him earn Second Team All-Patriot League honors. He has garnered five Patriot League Goalkeeper of the Week awards, and his 13 career shutouts already rank seventh in program history. Fox started three games last year and al-

SeaSon outlook

The Bucknell men’s soccer team won 13 games a year ago, the second-most in program history. While that is certainly a noteworthy achievement, for head coach Brendan Nash and his 20 return-ing players, the lasting memory of 2013 is a tough 1-0 loss at No. 21 Navy in the Patriot League Tour-nament semifinals. And now as the 2014 season nears, Nash senses that those final images in An-napolis are serving as motivation for this year’s squad.

“I don’t think it’s the 13 wins that we build from, but rather the disappointment of how the way the season ended,” said Nash during the pre-season. “We started off the season rough and lost our first two games, but then we got better as the season went along. When we played Navy in the regular season, they were significantly better

than us, but when we played them in the playoffs you could see just how much we had improved over the previous month. To lose on an own-goal, and then to watch Navy go on and win the cham-pionship, it just showed us how close we really were. But we can’t be satisfied with how much we improved. We need to replicate coming to prac-tice every day and trying to get better. If they can do that, then their personal and team goals will fall into place.”

Nash counts eight starters among his 20 re-turnees this fall, including a much-heralded ju-nior class and a strong group of seniors headed by team captains Brian Ward and Jonathan Grad. Striker Jesse Klug (10 goals, 3 assists), center midfielder Chris Thorsheim (8 goals, 1 assist), goalkeeper Mike Lansing (0.75 GAA, 8 shutouts), winger Patrick Figgie (team-high 4 assists) and fullback Connor Willings lead that talented junior class.

Third Team All-America defender Mayowa Alli is just launching his pro career in Denmark, and he will be a tough man to replace, both in the back four and for his ability to get forward and score goals, especially on set pieces. Not to be forgotten among the graduation losses are gritty outside back Joe Meyer, who was a two-time Aca-demic All-American, and defensive center mid Josh Butzke.

While Nash spent a great deal of time during the preseason trying to account for those losses, he says that step one in that process is replacing Alli’s leadership as last year’s lone captain.

“Mayowa was an All-American, but it was his leadership and how he controlled the locker room and the temperament of the team that we really don’t know yet how we are going to re-place,” said Nash. “But we have plenty of guys who were around Mayowa, and it is going to be more of a committee-type of leadership. Somebody is going to have to step up and fill that void. That’s one of the things when you are trying to reload — not rebuild — a program, somebody should be able to step into that role. I don’t know that we

lowed only one goal in 281 minutes while pro-ducing a perfect 3-0 record.

“We are very much set at the goalkeeper posi-tion, and it is fair to say it is the strength of our team,” said Nash. “We have a great starter and backup, and both of them have the ability to keep us in games. Mike played a lot this summer, and we hope he has taken his game to another level. If he has, then we can be very successful. We think Clarke is the best backup in the league, and we have the utmost confidence in him.”

In front of the keeper is a back four that will have a new look following the graduation of Alli and Meyer. Fortunately for Nash, he thinks he has two capable replacements in newcomers Zack Rockmore and Dan Bank. Rockmore is a junior transfer from Boston College who will take Alli’s spot at left center back, and Bank is a freshman who is already drawing comparisons to Meyer for his toughness and work rate at the right outside back spot.

“Zack is fitting in very well, and he has ACC-type talent,” said Nash. “How quickly he adjusts to Patriot League soccer will determine how suc-cessful he is. Dan has a lot of Joe Meyer in him. He is a quick, tenacious defender who can come forward. I am excited to see how he progresses.”

Bucknell closed last season with Willings play-ing the other center back spot — a new position for him — with rising senior Mark Leibensperger on the left side. Nash said that Willings had a tremendous spring season and is getting more comfortable in a role as an organizer and leader on the back line. Liebensperger started the final six games of 2013 and will again be in contention for a starting spot. Ward has also seen consider-able action at left back as well as defensive center midfield.

“Brian is a captain and a leader of our team,” said Nash. “He is extremely versatile. He can play left back, left center back and holding center mid, and I would expect his role to change throughout the year depending on what we need from him.”

Junior Mark Kramarchuk, sophomores Adam Bradshaw and Peter Krebs, and freshman Jack Na-tale are also part of the defensive unit.

“To be successful we have to defend as a unit and defend with passion,” said Nash. “That is what Bucknell soccer is all about.”

Nash typically plays with a holding center midfielder in front of the back four. Sophomore Sebastiaan Blickman saw extensive time in that spot last year and fared well, and freshman Jack Zollicoffer also brings tremendous promise.

“Sebastiaan is very fit and is a hard-working, chemistry guy,” said Nash. “He lifts the energy level of the guys around him with his own energy level. Jack is another big guy with a great work rate. He has a good soccer IQ and is strong in the air. He’s still adapting, but he’s going to be a good one.”

The Bison have a plethora of options in the midfield, which will allow Nash to make in-game tactical adjustments as the score dictates. Thor-sheim is the anchor in the middle of the field, a prototypical nimble center mid who adeptly links the backs to the forwards. Thorsheim also devel-oped as a goal-scoring threat last season, pump-ing in eight scores, including a perfect 4-for-4 on penalty kicks.

“Chris is our go-to player in the midfield,” said Nash. “We need him to keep doing what he does so well, connecting the defense to offense, set-ting up and scoring some goals.”

Grad, Figgie and sophomores Andrew Leis-chner and Austin Lenart give the Bison plenty of speed and determination in the midfield. Grad has 51 career appearances to his credit, and he got hot late in the year in 2013 with three goals against Patriot League opponents in the final two weeks of the campaign. Figgie typically runs the right flank and has the speed and strength to beat defenders 1v1 and get crosses into the box. Lenart and Leischner were both regulars as fresh-men last season and scored goals. Lenart and Fig-gie — two outside mids — shared the team lead in assists with four each.

“Jono is a captain this year and is now healthy after battling injuries last year,” said Nash. “We hope that his success late in the season last year will carry over. He reads the game well and makes good runs. Pat is just a tireless worker. He’s a ju-nior now, and I hope he gets rewarded in the stat column this year for all of that hard work. Andrew had a great start to preseason, and I ex-pect a breakthrough year from him. He brings a different dynamic to the midfield with his skill and quickness. Austin understands his role and has matured as a player over the last year. He is good at working the flanks and making plays out of nothing.”

Senior John Miller will add even more depth and experience to the midfield when he returns from injury midway through the season. Senior Rafael Enriquez-Hesles and sophomore Crispin Muessle will start the year as reserves at outside midfield positions.

Bucknell’s three returning forwards all bring different styles of play to the position. Junior Jesse Klug, coming off a breakout 10-goal season, can be a true sniper. Klug registered a goal or as-sist in 10 different games last season en route to First Team All-Patriot League and First Team All-

Jonathan Grad Region honors. He is complemented up front by senior Pat Plourde and sophomore Justin Galiani, both of whom bring size and strength to the posi-tion.

“We need to get Jesse as many touches as possible in the last third of the field,” said Nash. “The more touches he gets, the more confidence he has, and the more confident he is, the more goals he scores. We know what we are going to get when Pat comes into the game. He is going to work very hard and do everything he can to get the ball in the net. Justin has the size and strength, and he is still learning the nuances of being a forward in our system. But he is very tough to defend.”

The Bison have also added a pair of promising rookie forwards in Ben Derleth and Mike Moshier, who have both had some shining moments dur-ing the preseason.

“We have so many different looks there and have options to go with two forwards if needed,” said Nash. “Jesse is our main target, but each guy is so different, so we can play to matchups.”

Bucknell was picked third in the Patriot League Preseason Poll behind Navy and Army. The Mid-shipmen spun a perfect 9-0 league record last season and are favored to win it again in 2014. The Bison dropped two one-goal games against Navy last year, including that hard-fought Patriot League semifinal match, and they will return to Annapolis on Oct. 18.

The non-conference schedule is again chal-lenging, and it includes home games against Big East and Big 10 foes Xavier and Penn State as well as an October road trip to Syracuse.

The Patriot League Tournament will once again feature a six-team format, with the top two seeds earning quarterfinal byes. A year ago the Bison hosted a quarterfinal game and topped American 3-1, and this year they will be gunning for a top seed.

“We have a ton of potential,” said Nash, “but we have to realize that if we don’t work hard and work for each other that potential will be unful-filled.”

2009

The Bison men’s soccer team has captured three recent Patriot League championships, winning titles in 2006, 2009 and 2010. Bucknell became only the fourth team in Patriot League history to repeat as champion, and the Bison are just the second PL team to win three titles in a five-year span.

In the 2006 Patriot League Tournament, fourth-seeded Bucknell won twice in penalty kicks. Buoyed by red-hot goalkeeper Joey Kuterbach, the Bison defeated 14th-ranked Lehigh in the semifinals and Lafayette in the championship. Bucknell was the No. 1 seed in 2009, and playing at Em-mitt Field knocked off Lafayette (on Conor O’Brien’s overtime goal) and American. In 2010 the Bison again won as the No. 4 seed, this time picking off Colgate and American without conceding a goal.

Bucknell advanced to the NCAA Tournament after each of those Patriot League championships, and in 2006 and 2009 the Bison won first-round games, beating George Mason and Princeton, respectively. The George Mason win was Bucknell’s first NCAA victory since 1974.

While at Bucknell Gulati was a team manager with the Bison. He graduated Magna Cum Laude from Bucknell and earned his M.A. and M. Phil. in economics at Columbia. Gulati was Bucknell’s Commencement speaker in 2013.

After three years playing in the Danish Superleague, O’Brien has moved to Austria in 2014, where he plays for top-flight club Wiener Neustadt.

Bucknell University alumni ranked No. 4 among liberal arts college graduates and among the highest for all colleges and universities in a 2011 PayScale College Salary Report released this summer. The annual survey, which launched in 2008, assesses median starting and mid-career salaries among graduates of top U.S. liberal arts colleges. This year, alumni from 1,003 schools participated.

In this year’s report, Bucknell alumni had a median starting salary of $52,600 and a median mid-career salary of $108,000. The salary report also ranked Bucknell as 14th among all “top U.S. colleges,” including Ivy League and state universities, for mid-career earning potential.

Bucknell alumni historically have had high job placement rates in their first year after graduation. Nine months after graduation, for instance, 84 percent of the members of the Class of 2010 were either employed or enrolled in graduate or professional school, according to Bucknell’s Career Development Center. A small percentage opted to travel, volunteer or do a combination of both.

National ReputationA number of recent reports have served to underscore Bucknell’s

national reputation: • In 2007, The Washington Monthly ranked Bucknell No. 7 among the

best liberal arts colleges in the country when it comes to fostering research and promoting an ethic of service and social mobility.

• In 2010, the Peace Corps listed Bucknell at No. 6 on its top 25 list of small colleges and universities producing Peace Corps Volunteers.

• In February 2010, Kiplinger’s Personal Finance magazine rated Buck-nell as the 11th best value in private liberal arts colleges.

ThE PATRIOT lEAgUEThe Patriot League, which was founded on the principles of

admitting athletes who are academically representative of their class, is in its third decade of academic and athletic achievement. Participation in athletics at Patriot League institutions is viewed as an important component of a well-rounded education.

The Patriot League began as a successful football conference in 1986. Full League members include American, Army, Boston University, Bucknell, Colgate, Holy Cross, Lafayette, Lehigh, Loyola Maryland and Navy. Associate members include Fordham in foot-

ball, Massachusetts Institute of Technology in women’s rowing, Richmond in women’s golf and Georgetown in football and women’s rowing.

These member institutions are among the oldest and most prestigious in the nation. Alumni from Patriot League colleges and universities have played a leadership role in the shaping of our country. In the classroom, the Patriot League’s full-member institutions, individually and collectively, consistently rank among the top Divi-sion I programs in the NCAA Graduation Rates Report. Since 1998, the Patriot League has ranked first among all Division I conferences offering scholarships in student-athlete graduation rates according to the NCAA Gradu-ation Rates report. The League finished at the top spot with 96 percent of its teams reporting a graduation rate of 85 percent or higher in the most recent data. In addition, 90 Patriot League teams earned NCAA Academic Performance Program Public Recognition Awards after posting academic progress rate scores in the top 10 per-cent of all squads in their respective sports.

In the Patriot League’s history, more than 200 student-athletes have been recognized as CoSIDA Academ-ic All-Americans, while more than 12,000 have qualified for the League’s Academic Honor Roll. More than 30 student-athletes have received NCAA Postgraduate Scholarships. Additionally, Patriot League student-athletes have earned Fulbright Scholarships, Rhodes Scholarships, Marshall Scholarships and NACDA/Disney Scholar-ships.

As Bison Athletics seeks to create a comprehensive learning environment that meshes with the academic mission of the University, an important element of the complete student-athlete experience is participation in an elite leadership de-velopment program designed to identify, develop, challenge and support student-athletes and coaches in their continual quest to become leaders in academics, in athletics and in life.

The Bucknell Bison Leadership Acad-emy was launched in August 2011 with the goal of delivering programming and instruction that bridge theory, develop-ment and real experiences in an interac-

tive learning environment. Through this endeavor, team leaders can en-hance their impact on their teammates’ and their program’s performance immediately and for years to come. Leadership Academy programming has evolved and expanded throughout its first three years, and much more is planned in 2014-15.

Approximately 60 student-athletes particpate in Leadership Academy programming each year. Representing the men’s soccer team in 2014 will be Mike Lansing and Chris Thorsheim.

Goals for the Bucknell Bison Leadership Academy include:

• Identify and develop high potential leaders in their sophomore or junior years• Help young best athletes become best leaders• Create strong leaders by example and set the stage for developing vocal leaders• Build a strong peer support network for aspiring leaders• Develop leaders who support and learn from current team captains/leaders• Practice leading self, their class, and below• Succession Planning — smoothly replace graduating leaders

Fox Soccer Channel has visited the Bucknell campus for live national broadcasts twice in recent years. The 2007 game between Buck-nell and Lehigh and the 2009 contest between the Bison and Lafayette were televised on Fox Soccer Channel. There were the first national television broadcasts to originate from Buck-nell’s Emmitt Field at Holmes Stadium. The Bison won both games, topping Lehigh 3-1 in 2007 and Lafayette 1-0 in 2009. The 2014 game vs. Penn State will appear on NSCAA.com, and most other home games will be webcast on Bison Vision on the Patriot League Network.
