froM coach JacoBs

This is a great time to explore the University of Evansville, which offers a truly unique combination of commitment to excellence and tradition both on the soccer field and in the classroom.

The University of Evansville is regarded as one of the top Division I programs in the nation, having been a regular participant in the NCAA Tournament, a Final Four team in both 1985 and 1990, and a team that has been ranked number 1 in the country on several occasions.

The University of Evansville was one of only nine programs in the nation in 2008 to rank in the Soccer Times Top 25, achieve a team GPA of 3.0 or higher (our 3.22 GPA was 12th highest in the nation), and rank in the top 40 nationally

in attendance. UE soccer players receive an experience that transcends sport–the chance to compete with and against the best players and teams in the nation, to compete in a stadium with fans that rate among the finest in college soccer, the opportunity to get a degree that is highly valued, and the potential to develop into a leader among your peers.

We are very proud of our past, present and future at the University of Evansville, and hope that our recruiting yearbook can offer you insight into what our program is like behind the scenes.

Yours In Soccer,

Coach Jacobs

Entering his seventh season as head coach, Mike Jacobs has made University of Evansville Soccer one of UE’s premier athletic programs. He has led the Aces to four winning seasons in his six years, and to the finals of the 2009 State Farm MVC Tournament.

A longtime advocate for the growth of soccer at the youth, collegiate and professional levels, Jacobs was elected in January 2012 as Vice President for Events of the National Soccer Coaches Association of America, the largest coaching organization in the world with more than 30,000 members.

He was first elected to the NSCAA Board of Directors in 2009. The NSCAA Executive Committee, of which Jacobs is now a member, provides leadership and sets policy for youth, high school, college and professional soccer in the United States.

“My initial interest in being involved in the Board of Directors was to have a chance to grow the game of soccer on a larger level,” Jacobs says. “The opportunity to serve as Secretary gives me an opportunity to have a presence at the local, regional, national and international levels of our game. It’s pretty humbling to serve in this fashion in the largest coaching organization in the world.”

Jacobs is expected to become the Association’s President in 2015.

As involved as he is with the game at the national level, Jacobs’ main focus is on the Aces’ soccer program. Jacobs took over the UE program in 2006, and in his first year the Aces produced the nation’s most improved record at 9-8-0. That wasn’t all. UE in 2006 posted its best non-conference record (7-3-0) since 1996, and the Purple Aces’ fifth place finish in the highly regarded Missouri Valley Conference was their highest since 1999.

In 2007, playing a more difficult schedule, the Aces won 10 games for the first time since 1999. They climbed two more places in the MVC standings, finishing third behind two teams that eventually reached the NCAA Sweet 16. UE also reached the MVC Tournament semifinals for the first time since 1999. And, two years after averaging less than one goal per game, the 2007 Aces finished sixth nationally in scoring with 45 goals.

Then in 2008, playing seven teams that were nationally ranked at some time during the season, Jacobs led the Aces to another winning season. Mike Luttrull and Robby Lynch were chosen for the All-Midwest Region Team, and a total of nine members of the squad earned all-Missouri Valley Conference honors. As a result of his efforts, Jacobs in 2008 was awarded with a contract extension

through the 2012 season. The 2008 team was ranked nationally during the course of the season, and rose as high as #21 in the nation by Soccer Times - an amazing feat considering the program had only won 2 games in the 2005 season, the year prior to Jacobs and his staff arriving on campus.

Jacobs’ 2009 squad posted UE’s fourth straight winning season, reached the MVC Tournament finals and narrowly missed the NCAA Tournament. A record-tying four players made the All-Midwest Region Team in 2009. In addition, Lynch and Luttrull earned national scholastic honors in 2009. The 2009 team was recognized by each of the major national polls, receiving votes in the Soccer Times and NSCAA national polls as well as being ranked nationally in the Top Drawer Soccer polls. The 2009 season also marked the second consecutive season that the Aces were among the nation’s top 50 in attendance.

The 2010 team produced a pair of all-region players in Lynch and defender Aaron Henkle. Lynch was chosen as Missouri Valley Conference Defensive Player of the Year, and was chosen in January, 2011 by the expansion Portland Timbers in the MLS supplemental draft. Lynch, Henkle, Blake Schneider, Tyler Kincaid, Alex Kapsalis and Philip Manga all earned MVC post-season honors following the 2010 season. In addition, Mike Luttrull was chosen for the second year in a row as an Academic All-American, and Lynch was chosen for the second straight year as an NSCAA Scholar All-American.

The 2011 season was full of close encounters, as nine out of 17 contests were decided by one goal. The young squad boasted five all-conference honors with seniors Jarrett Robbins and Aaron Henkle earning second team and honorable mention nods, respectively. With great first-year campaigns, Patrick Hodges, Eric Teppen and Ryan Stallings were named to the Missouri Valley Conference All-Freshman Team.

Jacobs’ coaching career began shortly after he graduated from Pace University in Pleasantville, N.Y. in 1993. Jacobs served as Head Coach at Iona College in New Rochelle, N.Y. from 1996-99, and was the 1997 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Coach of the Year after taking a team that finished 1-17-1 in 1996 and leading the Gaels to a 12-6 record in ‘97. At age 24, he was the youngest Division I head coach in the country.

Jacobs then joined the University of Evansville program for the first time in 2000, when he was hired by legendary coach Fred Schmalz as the Purple Aces’ top assistant coach.

After two years at UE, Jacobs from 2002 through 2005 served as the top assistant coach at Duke University, where he helped lead coach John Rennie’s Blue Devils to three NCAA Tournament appearances, including the semifinals of the 2004 College Cup. The 2005 Blue Devils won the ACC Championship. Jacobs was named inaugural winner of the NSCAA National Assistant Coach of the Year award in 2004. He was listed by College Soccer News as one of the ‘Top Assistant Coaches in the Country’ four years in a row. He then returned to Evansville prior to the 2006 season as Head Coach.

Jacobs’ professional coaching experience includes assisting with the Long Island Rough Riders, where he worked with former Tampa Bay Mutiny and New York/New Jersey head coach Alfonso Mondelo. He also assisted with the North Jersey Imperials of the USISL, where he coached current United States Under-23 National Team assistant coach Tim Mulqueen. Jacobs has served on the US Soccer and USL Super Y-League national coaching staffs, and has developed a reputation for identifying and developing professional players. The group includes Stefani Miglioranzi of the Philadelphia Union; Cory Elenio of the Carolina Railhawks; Alec Dufty of AC St Louis; Michael Videira and Darrius Barnes of the New England Revolution; Ray Burse and Spencer Wadsworth (formerly of FC Dallas); Blake Camp (formerly of the New York Red Bulls); Jordan Cila (formerly of the New York Red Bulls, Real Salt Lake and Colorado Rapids); Chris Loftus (formerly of the New England Revolution and Swedish first

division); Kyle Helton (formerly with the New England Revolution); Mike Grella (Leeds United of English Coca-Cola Championship) and Brad Guzan (Aston Villa FC of the English Premier League and US National Team).

Jacobs holds a USSF ‘A’ license and an NSCAA Advanced National Diploma, in addition to recently completing his English League Managers Association (LMA) School of Football Management certificate. In a growing role with the National Soccer Coaches Association of America, Jacobs has written for NSCAA publications, has co-authored a chapter in the Soccer Coaches Bible along with Coach Rennie, and currently writes a column on soccer for the Sunday Evansville Courier & Press.

Jacobs also started a number of programs to help connect Aces Soccer with its supporters. ‘Kick The Cold, Give A Coat’ provides coats for those less fortunate during the holiday season. The ProRehab ‘Score with the Aces’ reading program encourages young students to read with their parents. ‘Kick for Nick’ is a cooperative effort between Aces Soccer and the Lambda Chi fraternity to collect used soccer balls to send to children in Iraq. UE’s ‘Kick For The Cure’ began in 2008 as a fundraiser for the Susan G. Komen For the Cure Foundation. Team members have also participated in Habitat For Humanity, Circle K Special Ed Prom, the MLK Walk, and Riley Walkathon. In addition, the Aces Soccer Camp is one of the largest soccer camps in the country, serving youth players from all over the United States.

Mike and his wife, Jennifer, have four children: Katherine (14), Daniel (10), Allison (9) and Amanda (7).

Going into his seventh year as Mike Jacobs’ top assistant, and fourth season as associate head coach, Marshall Ray is a major reason why Aces Soccer has become one of UE’s premier sports.

“Marshall has been intricately involved with our success, and continues to be an influence in our locker room,” says Jacobs. “Having a former player who is passionate about representing the University of Evansville is a tremendous example for our players. There is no question that Marshall bleeds purple.”

A 2000 graduate of UE, Ray was a member of the 1996 Missouri Valley Conference Tournament championship team that reached the NCAA Tournament. He played defender and forward, and was an MVC Offensive and Defensive Player of the Week during his career. Ray received UE’s Ian Coull Award in 1999 for competitive spirit and teamwork, and was on the NSCAA Scholar-Athlete all-region team. After playing professionally for the A-League Nashville Metros in 2001, Ray spent four years at Drury University. After two years as Drury’s assistant coach, he became the youngest Division I head coach in the country in 2003 at age 25. Both of his teams at Drury received the NSCAA Team Academic Award. Ray had just completed his playing career at UE when Jacobs joined the Evansville staff as assistant coach in 2000. Jacobs left for Duke University as an assistant coach in 2002, and brought Ray to the Duke program after the 2004 season. Ray spent the 2005 season involved with recruiting, player development and day-to-day operations for the Blue Devils, who won the ACC Tournament and were nationally ranked that year. Ray also directed the Duke Soccer Camps.

When Jacobs returned to UE from Duke as UE’s head coach in 2006, he made Ray his first choice for assistant coach. Ray holds a USSF A license and studied under Pierre Barrieu, U.S. National Fitness Coach, to obtain a USSF National Fitness Level I license. He holds an NSCAA Advanced National License. Ray serves as Midwest Regional Chair for the NSCAA/Performance Subaru Division I All-America Committee, and as a coach led FC Evansville to IYSA state championships in 2009 and 2010.

Marshall lives in Evansville with his wife Julia and their two children, Patrick, 5, and Hilary, 1.
